I Agree with you on Synology photos 1000%, it needs work. I've been leaving feedback on it for one option. That is, to add an indicator in personal space that lets you know if a photo is or is not included in an album!!!
Hi Frank, another great video to help users get the most from their Synology. Personally my favourite app is Surveillance Station. I used to have a stand alone DVR and when I purchased my NAS was blown away by how powerful the Surveillance Station software is. Many thanks.
SS is feature packed but running 5 cameras on a 218Play and doing a media server (Emby) was just too taxing for it. It would cause my media server to crawl even though i didn't use it to transcode video. Went to a dedicated i7 PC running Blue Iris. Not completely satisfied with that either but it works running 9 cameras. Maybe if I had a much faster Synology it might handle more concurrent tasks. Thanks to this channel for tons of good content.
I just got a new Synology NAS after using my own frankenstein storage solutions for the past decade or so. I appreciate all the tutorials, without them I would have been pretty lost trying to set up the things I was trying to do.
From that moment on I ignored "for Business" this app is my most important Synology software! I've set up a weekly schedule with starting the backup by turning on my PCs - just simply carefree !!
Excellent video Frank! I totally approve of this app list. I use these applications almost daily. Hyper backup actually saved my behind more than once!
I am a newcomer to this and as I spend several months away from home I wanted access to all the stuff I have stored on my home PC. So your videos are very informative.

I obviously don't want to have 2 instances of all my photos on the NAS. I just want to make sure I would be setting this up correctly though.
To be honest,, the Synology Surveillance Station is interesting, except for the fact that the cost per camera drives it up, vs. just grabbing a HikVision NVR for cameras as example; you can grab one of those for $130 at NewEgg and they are perfect up to 16 cameras, no ongoing license. Doing licensing at Synology Surveillence licensing is WAY more than that, and renewal cost..

Okay, just so i dont stack up more data then needed - is possible when using Synology drive with my phone and Synology photos - To somehow have you photo uploaded on the fly - But not appear twice in both photo and drive locations?
I would probably select one over the other, though they can be used for different things. Just configure Photos for the photos and the Drive for whatever else you'd like.
I’m a little confused with snapshot and hyper backup. Does hyper back already has incremental backup so you can go back in time, similar to a snapshot function?
The snapshots are taken at the volume level and can be restored/completed very quickly. I like to look at it like the first line of defense: restore from the snapshot if you can - if you can't, go to HB.
I was expecting a lot more from Synology Photos, I don't see the improvements that you"ve mentioned that have provided. That was the key critera. I regret spending all that cash on synology.
It's not improving particularly quickly but it is improving. Object recognition, for example, was recently added and it wasn't available at release. I agree though, they could move quicker.
Side question : If one day my synology nas dies , how can I restore my hyperbackup to a newer nas ? I guess I start from scratch and then I use the hyperbackup explorer right ? But since you can backup your apps configuration inside your hyperbackup , how do you do that :) Do you have a video on that subject ? Thanks !

I am trying to use HyperBackup to an off-site Synology NAS using QuickConnect, but I get a message that it is not supported. Can I setup a special port number and then port forward to the backup NAS?
Hello, is there any NAS model that can automatically upload photos? When we take photos on our phone, even if we are not in the app, it will upload them for us. I want that model because from what I have heard, it seems like B-Station does not upload them automatically.
The BeeStation and DSM run very similar versions of the photo app, so if you don't think the BeeStation will work, neither will their NAS. With that said, I haven't run into issues with photos automatically backing up.
So... With this Synology Photos app, do I have to have the NAS accessible over the Internet for it to backup the photos from the phone? Or, can it just wait till I get home and connected to my home WiFi ,and automatically do the backup then? I don't plan to EVER make my NAS accessible over the Internet.
If you don't want it accessible over the internet, then yes, if you wait until you get home, it'll automatically back up. There are various ways to do it remotely (even QuickConnect), but as soon as you connect, it should start to back up.
I used to have active backup for business for linux running but apparently it is not capable to run above a certain kernel level wont work. current ubuntu lts 22.04 doesn't work for me
If you use Hyper Backup to backup to the cloud, say Google Drive, will files that you've deleted on the NAS that you're backing up also automatically be deleted from the cloud backup, or do they just keep accumulating? I often delete files on my NAS, and if I ever have to restore, I don't want all those files I've deleted to then be restored.
They will be retained based on the retention settings. If you're saving 3 versions for example, you'll retain the files until the versions have been rotated. This is necessary for the backups to function properly (in case the data is deleted accidentally, ransomeware, etc). However, after X amount of new backups, the data will be removed.
Is sharing data with synology over the web HIPPA compliant. ? The data has to be encrypted while at rest and during transport. ? Do you set up open vpn servers locally ?
Not sure of all HIPPA requirement but the Synology operating system certainly allows encrypted volumes, so that data can be encrypted at rest. Both Hyperback and Active Backup for Business, as well as Drive, can be set to use encrypted transmission. Additionally, you can easily access files remotely as well via a VPN back to your Synology DS.
I am hoping you will be able to help me. I am running on Windows 11. The only problem I have with active backup for business is that you need to have a Synology account and link your NAS to Synology which is a bit annoying.
@@DavidM2002 I just did retry it. I am running DS220+ with up to date firmware. When you start the Active backup for busniss 1st time it asks you to log in into your synology account.
Are you talking about a "Synology account" that exists on your local Synology server? Or is it mandatory to log into a Synology account that only exists on a Synology server accessible only via the Internet? If the later, then this backup software would be completely useless on a LAN that has no Internet access.

What the hell, I've been using my synology nas at like 5%
Don't know if anyone can help me, my Synology NAS DS920+ won't allow me to copy files from the nas to my laptop, it starts then just stops a few seconds later, any help appreciated
How are you trying to handle the copy? Are you connecting from the laptop?
@@WunderTechTutorials Sorry for late reply, I didn't receive notification that you had. I know what was causing the issue, I'm using Nord VPN, after I connect to do my online banking then disconnect, if a few hours later I went to take a file off my NAS it wouldn't allow me, there is something from the VPN which is stopping me. Once the pc is rebooted it all works
@@robertleem5643 NordVPN is a full-tunnel VPN, so you won't be able to access local services with it. I think you might be able to configure it to allow that, but I'm not positive.
The only problem I have with active backup for business is that you need to have a Synology account and link your NAS to Synology which is a bit annoying.
I don't think that is correct. I use it on my home network and at least one of the machines has no Synology account. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know.
@@DavidM2002 I just did retry it. I am running DS220+ with up to date firmware. When you start the Active backup for busniss 1st time it asks you to log in into your synology account.
@@MiFonitoIt's been a long time since I set mine up so you must be right. Thanks for the update and clarification.
Are you talking about a "Synology account" that exists on your local Synology server? Or is it mandatory to log into a Synology account that only exists on a Synology server accessible only via the Internet? If the later, then this backup software would be completely useless on a LAN that has no Internet access.

Goog video, although in my opinion I would not have a lightsource like the pc monitor in the background. It is kind of disturbing for me as a viewer and catches too much attention away from the protagonist.
It would cost a lot.
