Great stuff and a different and Interesting Video this time. Fascinating fact, regarding the Strathisla Distillery auction your tour guide mentioned, there was in fact a second bidder.... Gordon & Macphail, they were super confident that they were going to win the auction. However according to G&M there was some sculduggery involved in the bidding process, from what they say, they bid £70,000 and Seagrams bid £70,001 hence ruining their plans to own a distillery for a further 40 years until Benromach.
Wow, some very interesting bottles in the shop! I've tried only one Strathisla, a 1987 G&M from a refill hogshead, it was fantastic! Thanks for the trip vlogs!
Great Video 🙂 I was there too, I like the Ditsillery lookingwise from the outside a lot. The bottlings in the shop are stupid. 50cl and over 200 Pounds. I do not know. The tasting and the tasting range looks qiute nice and it is great that it is only a range of Strathisla. The 50cl bottlings anoyed me a lot with the heavy prices. I own only one bottle from Strathisla. This one: WB:2140. But you had a nice tour guide and it looked like a fantastic tasting and time. Cheers 🙂
I'm sure you know this but the reason why cooperages in Scotland tend not to use British oak is because Oak trees in the UK are left to their own devices and grow naturally. Consequently, British Oak is not straight and has many wood knots which means a huge loss of useful wood and more time and effort preparing them. Oak trees in Europe and the North America have been engineered to grow straight with minimum knots to maximise the wood you can extract from each tree. North American Oak in particular has also been engineered on an industrial scale through selective grafting and genetic manipulation to increase vanillin and other positive flavours and decrease bitter sap tannins.
The prices of the Distillery Reserve Collection is eye watering...and don't forget they are only 50cl bottles! Hmm, but that Caperdonich is tempting (he said, completely undermining his own point).
very interesting. Did not know this "Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky produced by Pernod Ricard in Scotland. The company was founded in 1786, with its home being in the Strathisla distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland, and is the oldest continuously operating Highland distillery."
The title of the video says it all...very interesting...! sometimes the room's reverb is a bit too high to follow for me, but all in all a great video/opportunity to learn more about whisky beyond this distillery, and also (yep a bit jealous there lol) a rare occasion to try single casks from a great underrated distillery that is Strathisla, the "wild child of Speyside" if I may say...a very powerful spirit that needs good wood to shine, and no wood tech or "sanitization" (and I believe that the 12 yo, previous & current, doesn't pay justice to the distillate's potential imho...). Also funny how the tour guide is very knowledgeable while very young & so "Speyside corporate" (vs Islay corporate), or is it just a matter of color & tastes, but that passage was funny). I hope some day you"ll try the 1957 G&MP i've reviewed, or an early 2000s 25 yo age statement (matured & bottled by them too). Slainte !
Tell me, did you see any non-Ex-Sherry cask matured Strathisla for sale or for tasting when you were there? My own records show that Strathisla is almost exclusively Ex-Sherry. Still, it's such a beautiful distillery. Perhaps it's still worth a visit? Update: I see at 22:45 that they do do some Ex-Bourbon....Good to know.
Actually, I am not sure she is correct at 27:00. As far as I know, none of the North American cooperages that I am aware of, produce 500L butts. They will produce QA ASB (200L) or QA Wine 225L Barrique casks (which they will call "Wine barrels"). The American Oak wood will be exported to cooperages in Spain and Scotland and the 500L butts are made up there. You are near the Speyside cooperage which is a fantastic place to visit. Ask them there. I'm sure they will confirm what I wrote. Incidentally some 80% of so called "Spanish Sherry Butts" are made in Spain from imported American Oak (QA). If you want the cask to be made from European (QR) Oak then you can add some 30% or more onto the price.

Never understood why a Scottish whisky had a Spanish name, when I first saw Chivas Regal I Thought it was a Mexican whisky.

Yeah the info is quite convoluted.They use barrel when it is American oak. Eg with the 19 year. The cooperage was closed to the public sadly
