He had learned the language at school and read the books of German writers in the original version. In the First World War he had to spend about two years in war captivity (for example in Bavaria) where he still further improved his knowledge of the German language. Although his family had much to suffer from Germans in the Second World War (inter alia his niece and his brother-in-law were imprisoned in concentration camps) Charles de Gaulle wholeheartedly wanted the reconciliation between the old "Arch Enemies" Germany and France as the base of a durable peace in Europe. During his state visit in Germany in 1962 Charles de Gaulle delivered all his brilliant speeches in German. He had designed all the addresses himself, perfected them with the help of interpreters and learned them by heart. A remarkable memory performance for a man of 72 years. Charles de Gaulle's words, which found so much response in the hearts of the German people, came from his heart and that's why they are so deeply moving.
Manuela Hertel , i knew about his war captivity in ww1, i really appreciate you writing the reply you have done, its its inspired me to go out and buy a biography of de gaulle ive studied churchill, hitler, mussolini and stalin but neglected the french leaders, i was astounded watiching this yesterday this is the kind of information that people really need to and should know
Thank you very much for your kind reply. There are countless biographies about Charles de Gaule, but sadly many historians don't pay him the respect the greatest French statesman deserves. Undoubtely the most important biography about Charles de Gaulle was written by French writer Jean Lacouture (the monumental biography in three volumes was translated into English) The most moving biographies were written by members of his family. His son-in-law Alain de Boissieu once said: "One has only seen the real Charles de Gaulle when one has seen him with his disabled daughter on his knees, singing songs to her." Charles de Gaulle youngest daughter Anne suffered from the Down syndrome and was loved by her father with infinite tenderness. Philippe de Gaulle, who has a striking resemblence to his famous father (luckily he is still with us despite his old age), wrote memoirs about the General in two volumes. Just in case you want to watch other videos about Charles de Gaulle, please check my channel. There are several of them, sadly all in my native German and I can't provide English subtitles. For example here is the link for the first part of a very intesting documentary: ruclips.net/video/vcrDCGZ4V24/видео.html
