All of those episodes provided quite a lot of potential. Some of it was used, but most was forgotten. Kind of weird how Ben's parents were so underutilized, despite being one of the select few humans, who know of his identity.
While I do hope he’s not getting stressed out by doing 4 breakdowns, it kinda makes sense to do these 4 at the same time Bc they have less to dive into unlike “Max out” or finales
29:11 this has gotta be one of my most favourite scenes in alien force tbh. its cool seeing Ben interact with people in alien form during everyday life rather than a fight scene. Also echo echo's voice here is just epic

I think the reason Ben wanted nothing to do with Ship was his parents. I’m not sure, but it’s possible this episode was originally planned to be before “grounded”, so his parents wouldn’t know about aliens. And having a random alien dog thing being kept at your house while trying to keep his interactions with aliens away from his parents, it makes sense he would not want to keep Ship around.
@@duncananderson2113 not sure abt that. They might not even have malware in their plans that early. For me, it's more of foreshadowing albedo's red colored aliens in contrast to ben.
I think Ben was more worried about what the forever knights would do to Julie rather than what Ship would do to her, as she had literally gotten attacked moments earlier. And at this point, Julie really has no way of fighting the forever knights, who have laser weapons and could easily off her if the rest of the team isn’t looking out for her. And Ben probably knew that although she was relatively unharmed after the Shipnapping, that was just one knight. They are about to go to one of their bases, which most likely would have a ton of knights. It makes sense he didn’t want her going.

Y'know, Ultimate Alien does explain the translation thing by stating the Omni/Ultimatrix and the Plumber's badges come equipped with interstellar translators.

When Gwen and Ben's parents were introduced in Alien Force, I really wanted to see an episode where the whole Tennyson family is in it. I believed as a kid that there would be an episode where the family would be on a holiday and later they would have to fight aliens. That would be an episode where Carl and Max would have a little fall out while he also finds out from Frank about Verdona visiting and attacking Ben and Gwen. Oh, and Verdona would make an appearance here and I would love to see how Verdona and Sandra's relationship would be. Both Ben and Gwen's parents (+ Ken) were underutilized. It would have been awesome had they've been more scenes of them across UAF.
I definitely felt we should have gotten more from Bens parents, Grounded was definitely a great starting point, at least let me see their reaction to Ben just going “oh yeah you guys are grand parents” lol For Unearthed, Tiny probably saw Gwen’s Annodite form based on the belief babies can see ghosts easier then everyone else, and because Annodites are loaded with life energy, that would make sense, and a miscellaneous adventure following all the babies? Sign me up!! Also Ben, you’re a MOTHER and you WOULDN’T HELP A BABY??? Anger
Take it easy kuro, four episodes? That’s nuts! If you’re going at the pace you want to, then by all means, but please don’t feel pressured to ‘catch up’ because you took a break.
32:09 Not a webcam, Ben even mentions "wireless network"; he's using his phone to connect to some open WiFi; you can even see his right arm has some perspective distortion since he's holding the phone.
28:15- She probably took that stance from instinct. She's trained in martial arts and was shown with a black belt in episode 1, so she likely just takes the defensive pose like that from a sort of muscle memory. She probably doesn't even realize that she's doing it. Like how an Arachnachimp fires webs from its tail, its one of those things you just do. Maybe Tiny's species just happens to be familiar with Anodites? Or Tiny is seeing her "true" form by reading her aura in a way that's similar to how Gwen can use her mana to find others?
I disagree with Ben being wrong in the "pet project" Julie could die from the slightest thing. The others can do but they can get through that with various defenses they have. Julie is just a liability in combat situations at this point in the story. If someone with a gun takes your pet you going I stead of letting the police handle it is just you getting in the way, then what if you or she dies now you've wasted your life yes wasted because you never had a chance, and you pet is now without their owner. Just adding insult to injury
Yeah, that's what soured their relationship for me. She was too stubborn at times, she was a liability in the field and a distraction not only to Ben but also the rest of the team.
The magnitude of this channel we have to stop and realize that kuro and his crew rejuvenated a whole fandom it's just crazy to think about McDuffie would be so proud rn
45:18-45:38: When we get to Vengeance of Vilgax Part 1; that scene of Ben arrogantly showing up late to a battle should be compared with this scene of him dropping everything and rushing as fast as he can to help his friends, It would be a perfect way to show Ben's different characterizations between the first two seasons and season 3.
I think when it comes to Ben using the Omnitrix in the arachnachimp space-suit, the issue comes from him not being able to physically adjust the dial under the suit. In the Classic Series plumber-hazmat suit, the Omnitrix was able to be on the outside due to how it morphed around him, but in this more standard(ish) space suit, it's covered. And when Ben said "I can't make it though that" I think he was more referring to him as a human (due to not being able to access the Omnitrix)
The effect chosen for chromostone in the Tiny episode was truly phenomenal, and the energy he dealt back was handled very well with legitimate power. A very underutilized alien but when he’s done right he’s visually incredible in action.
Kuro's got more energy in his voice again, I'm glad. Kuro I wanna say thanks for all the hard work you and the Ink Tank have been putting in all your projects.
I think the thing with Simian and the DNAlien acid stuff is that the Highbreed didn't actually use it on Simian since we didn't hear Simian scream or anything, rather he might have just used it on the rock nearby Simian as a fear tactic and warning like "hey, fuck up again and that'll be you next time." Just a thought I had.
I distinctly recall a scream that abruptly cuts off, as if you could hear the exact moment he died. Maybe that's a Mandela effect thing, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the episode got edited to make it more ambiguous when it was released for streaming services, for both continuity and censorship purposes.
For me, the old fashioned movies weren't really a thing until high school when I got really into the Twilight Zone. Watched the whole series and that was my main real experience with being a teen and getting into 'old' media.
Man, kuro haven't reviewed four episodes at once since the world building episodes in classic. Don't burn yourself out Kuro, we don't want to get to the personality overhaul ben in season 3 to soon.
@@velvetdarksoul8741 I would be cocky, but there is a time and place for it. Like when vilgax asked them to help save his planet and when he got possessed and vilgax saved the day, he tried to take all the credit
Nah the season 3 change isn't remotely as bad as you people say it is, you're allowed to have your own opinion instead of blatantly agreeing to everything Kuro says
Hey Kuro I know this is WAY too early to ask but when you eventually finish breaking down every series what do you think you will feel: relief that it's over or sadness for the same reason?
Something I never understood in 'Grounded' was why did Ben even chose to transform into Echo Echo or Humangosaur when leaving his house, given he could easily have done Jetray to get there, then switched. Why was his plan to run there? Fr?
To me that scene where it seems like he cant understand Kevin is instead Simion reacting with confusion to Kevins comment about never seeing him fight like that before. Because in Simion's perspective Kevin has never seen him fight before.
Kuro just casually releasing a whole movie worth of content. Super casual. Looking forward to the anniversary of 5YL in the beginning of April, I've said it before, but the updates of 5YLR have been really cool so far
A star walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says, "I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
Grounded is actually one of my favorite episodes to go back and watch. A lot of nothing happens in it, but I kinda like that, and I enjoy seeing episodes involving Ben's parents and how they deal with his alien connections (yes, I like the episodes of Omniverse where she and Ma Vreedle are friends and Ben has to suck it up because they enjoy each other).
Watching Unearthed with that scene where Gwen says that Ben didn't pay much attention in health class, reminded me of that scene in Showdown pt. 2 where Kevin says the exact same thing to Gwen after he adopts Zed.
I think my favorite parts of these videos is watching your cat climb on you looking for attention while you have to keep composure and face the camera.
If this was the only episode of that other spider monkey, I rank it 8/10. I loved him in this episode even tho it was generic. Him making up a story and Ben trying his hardest for a guy he put his faith in just to be stabbed yet again. And then Sim getting stabbed by his employer just sells this episode.
I'd argue that taking the crystal was crucial to the bait and switch, since the entire building powers down without it. If it had been left in its place, it would have been obvious that the crystal was still in its place, and Simian would have continued trying to steal it. Now maybe Ben could have successfully fought him off, but why take that chance, instead of just letting him leave thinking he had won while actually pulling a little sneaky-sneaky on the side?
@@TheVardener And since Ben is smarter than most give him credit for- Simian even comments something to the effect that he's overrated- he can use their overconfidence to his advantage.
The issue with that line of logic emerald dragon it that it relies on Simion never checking the box on his way to the hibreed, or coming after the crystal again.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Well, we already know he doesn't check the box again, because he's surprised to realize he's been hoodwinked, and he's so overconfident that he's won that I doubt things would have changed, anyway.
@@emeralddragon2980 yeah, but Ben didn't know that, which is exactly my point. The bait and switch plan relies far more on simians arrogance than simians plan relied on Ben's naivete. So it really wasn't that good of a plan.
44:08 There was one old sci-fi/horror flick I’ve seen (thanks to Mystery Science Theater 3000) called “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die”. It’s good cheesy fun to watch with friends and riff on.
I think it's weird that the ending of Grounded mentions "an alien sighting in the desert" seemingly setting up that Unearthed was the next episode in production order, only to figure out that it isn't.
Actually as someone who knows Martial Combat. Julie whacking that guy with the blunt end and doing some decent damage is consistent. Blunt weapons is what you want to use against plate armor. And getting smacked in the gut like that. It would definitely hurt.
So why don't we humans use blunt weapons more? Which weapon would resist blunt weapons but say be weak to pointy weapons(Spears) or cutting weapons(Swords)?
@@danielsurvivor1372 We do use Blunt weapons. In a medieval concept it's maces and hammers. While in a modern concept it's Police buttons and Baseball bats. A board of wood works too
@@danielsurvivor1372 Well from a lethality point of view, blunt weapons don't usually do it as easily. Blunt weapons were good against plate armor cause it could dent the plate and that dent could best case just restrict your movement a bit, or worse case, cause damage as you try to move. A large dent in your breastplate is gonna restrict your breathing or straight up crush your ribs. But most cheaper armors like Studded leather and chainmail had padding that made blunt weapons less effective. Because they were unwieldy and couldnt as easily hit someone in the head with the less clunky armor. But swords and spears were less unwieldy and could cut and puncture those more maneuverable armors with some luck. Or were just easier to hit weak spots with. Hence why variety tended to exist on the scale it did.
16:20 That exact sound is used in the Alien Force Omnitrix toy, you know, the one that uses those plastic crystal holograms where the Brainstorm one became a huge thing because of "Green Needle?" That Omnitrix toy.
Wow. I totally spaced that this episode referenced the "damage taken in alien form translates to Ben" rule. For the longest time I thought it was just the first instance and the Clockwork incident.
One could say Birds of a Feather should have a higher importance. Kevin keeps Lu’s ship which gets used and referenced in the episode Don’t Fear the Repo.
You can just assume that he actually got a ship from a offscreen adventure similarly to the translator for the dragon you don’t really need to see how he got it
Headcannon: unless a human understood something a DNAlien said, they’re probably just speaking regular alien but we can understand them because of the “language convention.”
I just realized that they did 1 "family" episode centered around one of the main team members in each of the AF seasons. Season 1 episode 9 was the Verdona one, Season 2 episode 7 is the one with Ben's parents grounding him and Season 3 episode 17 was the one with Kevin's father's killer.
I always took Tiny being able to see Gwen's anodite form as a take on the idea of like, babies being able to tell someone's character in fiction. It's a sort of aura she gives off that makes her calming to Tiny, and the best way to visualize that for the audience was to show why its happening. Also, I kind of like that Tiny's parents look identical. I always thought that in fiction with aliens, it's good to have a mix. After all, if you were to look at a lizard, would you be able to tell if it was a male or female? Even if it's next to the other sex, it'd still probably be hard. So I like when there's a mix of "There's no way humans can tell without knowing what to look for" and "you can just tell."
The role I always remember Diedrich for is Warp Darkmatter from the Buzz Lightyear series. I remember finding it very fitting that he also voiced Simian, as they're both revealed to be working for the bad guys for the sake of profit towards the end of their debuts.
I remember watching a behind the scenes clip of the first Alien Force video game talking about the voice acting, and I remember Dee Bradley Baker said doing Humongousaur’s voice was rough on his throat. Maybe Dee couldn’t do the Humongousaur voice that well while “Grounded” was recorded so they brought the filter back.
Hey Kuro I just wanted say I've been a big fan for a very very long time I was around since the beginning of 5YL, and I've been amazed and inspired by your work multiple times and your videos always cures my unending boredom when scrolling RUclips. And to this day it still does, my birthday is happening on April 3rd the day where 5YL would hold it's anniversary event and I just have to say that's the most amazing birthday gift that anyone can get XD thank you Kuro for making my childhood and still making my days brighter than usual!
We’ve seen young Ben dodge the grasp of Vilgax and Kevin and jump through a tiny Null Void portal within seconds of it completely disappearing. He’d be fine against some robots
1:06:56 I remember this joke being used again in Omniverse. But there it was Kevin who said it to Gwen , after she wonderd why Kevin knew the sex of Zed, after the fight against Malware on Galwan Prime.
Assuming Ben could turn into one of tiny's species, cause their clearly intelligent, what would he call it and what would his powers be? I'm guessing it's from a hot magma planet, given that it's very heat resistant and can see anodite Gwen, which I'm think is some sorta energy vision for seeing special things on a mineral rich planet. Or who knows. Tiny also seems interested in eating metal, ie Kevin's car, but that could just be a baby putting things in their mouth.
14:00 as an animator I would bet the good animation in the filler, for lack of a better term, is probably due to the studio putting newer people on the episode. Younger animators tend to try and prove themselves alot by doing more complex work than the more seasoned animators. Sometimes this leads to great scenes with fluid animation and dynamic compositions other times it creates some weird moments like simmians ship suddenly appearing sideways. For a great example take the pain fight from naruto which was given to a relatively young animator who didnt have the experience necessary to pull of some of the animation he was doing, hence the fan backlash at the fight looking so weird despite having such fluid and dynamic animation.
I imagine he just instinctively switches back to his native language when excited or on an adrenaline high, then intentionally has to utilize English first, meanwhile Ben understands both languages easily while transformed
I might be alone on this, but I really enjoyed Pet Project since it reintroduces Ship, gives him an ability we've never seen a Mechamorph do before and a reason to be a recurring character(?) (turning into a giant flying fortress). Also Ship is just really friggin cute despite being a blob of nanomachines.
In a previous episode didn’t Kevin say he needed a lot of material to draw from to become it? He was presented with something the same size as his phone when he said that, but this time that limitation isn’t present.
"We got the egg marinating goop, We got the power source goop, We got the goop that the dnaliens shoot out of their mouth , We got goop Goop , We got the goop from that mr. Smoothie cup"
The reason Ben can’t use his powers in the suit is because when he transforms back he won’t be wearing it. This is reinforced later in ultimate alien, so the reasoning is solid. Also, claiming Ben can dodge their attacks by using the scene from the beginning of the episode doesn’t work because he was in the form of an alien much faster than a human
@@grimfin3214 The bit about the Omnitrix giving you what you were wearing before is true. That's how it works in Classic (think about when he transforms with the Galactic Enforcers outfit) and how it works AF (when he transforms without his jacket in Alone Together and even in the episode where Sandra and Carl find out). Even in UA it's actually brought up that the Omnitrix would transform the user wearing what they wore before but that Ultimatrix defaults to what Ben was wearing when he first got it.
51:55 it could also be a term used to describe a ship made out of random junk/weapons with the objective to just max out on fire power like how kitbashing is used for figurines being mixed together or how a homemade firearm is also called ghost gun
I can totally see the animators making the scene on 27:46 and being like: "We need to put stuff on this screen" "How about scribbles? Or just lines?" "Nah, it's gotta look like actual words" "You really wanna spend that much time on this? It's a 5 second scene" "You know what? Screw it, let's just write "this" and "that"
HOLD up, Deidrich Bader plays Simian? I never knewthat! Now I can hear it and it's a good thing recognised him as Batman from TBATB, I grew up watching that show. Bader also played Moon Knight in a Marvel Disney show and that's pretty dope lol
In my opinion like so many people pointed out, I think Ben's behaviour with ship roots with Malware ( I know OV is way ahead but chronologically 11 year encounter is very crucial) and it would be a good Retcon/hard-canon for Ben's psyche affected by Malware ❤️
I always thought that the reason why Tiny could see Gwen’s Anodite form was because she was a baby, and babies are said to be able to see things that fully grown adults or adults can't see, sort of like the way animals see things that are normally visible to the naked eye. I don't know, that’s just a random thought I had.
MyFace could be the Ben 10 version of MySpace, which had fallen out of popularity to social media networks like Facebook and Twitter by the time this episode would have been written. Basically Ben’s mum not being up to date with technology, which is a stereotype for parents in media.
BRO I WAS EVER SO SLIGHTLY WORRIED WITH THE ONE EPISODE BREAKDOWNS BUT YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY OUTDONE YOURSELF RECENTLY, I won’t question you again I promise
I really appreciate these breakdowns because I haven’t seen some episodes since their original airing when I was a young child. I don’t remember any of these episodes except for Grounded, but it’s good to see them all in order. I also noticed that in Pet Project, when the group is in the castle, it kinda gives off Scooby-Doo vibes (Ben is Shaggy, Julie is Velma, Gwen is Daphne, Kevin is Fred and Ship is Scooby).

For Unearthed, Tiny probably saw Gwen’s Annodite form based on the belief babies can see ghosts easier then everyone else, and because Annodites are loaded with life energy, that would make sense, and a miscellaneous adventure following all the babies? Sign me up!!
Also Ben, you’re a MOTHER and you WOULDN’T HELP A BABY??? Anger

"You can't ground me! I'M A SUPER POWERED ALIEN!"
I literally saw this comment then looked at my time in the video. It was 28:14!
Wait, why did Carl not know that Max was a Plumber but Frank back in the Verdona episode apparently knew?
Also, does Carl KNOW that his dad is “dead”?
Maybe Carl found out on accident
Pretty sure he did know.

I wouldn't say as fast he could considering we see jet ray move at a quicker speed before and after this episode.
And I hope Ben's season 3 attitude doesn't affect his parents.
Dude, I was literally just digging through your channel to see if "Grounded" was there. Now 10 minutes later it's in my sub box
Yeah I always thought it was weird there was never a scream.
I distinctly recall a scream that abruptly cuts off, as if you could hear the exact moment he died.

Something I never understood in 'Grounded' was why did Ben even chose to transform into Echo Echo or Humangosaur when leaving his house, given he could easily have done Jetray to get there, then switched. Why was his plan to run there? Fr?
Or just use big chill to phase through the walls, the easiest thing to do
He could have turned into big chill and go invisible
I feel Ben turned into humungasaur to scare his parents showing he can be as massive as a highbreed general.
I'm so happy to see multi-episode breakdowns!!! No offense I was getting worried because of the smaller reviews and the amount of time between them.
To me that scene where it seems like he cant understand Kevin is instead Simion reacting with confusion to Kevins comment about never seeing him fight like that before. Because in Simion's perspective Kevin has never seen him fight before.

One detail that I liked was Ben, Gwen and Kevin had the tails on the suits wrapped around their waists like a belt.
I never noticed that
Watching Unearthed with that scene where Gwen says that Ben didn't pay much attention in health class, reminded me of that scene in Showdown pt. 2 where Kevin says the exact same thing to Gwen after he adopts Zed.
I guess it's a callback or just coincidence.
That actually makes a lot of sense as a reason. He pretends to not have realized but is prepared for it going in.

Wow. I totally spaced that this episode referenced the "damage taken in alien form translates to Ben" rule. For the longest time I thought it was just the first instance and the Clockwork incident.
Birds of a feather is just a ben10 version of the Nigerian Prince scam that Ben almost fell into
One could say Birds of a Feather should have a higher importance. Kevin keeps Lu’s ship which gets used and referenced in the episode Don’t Fear the Repo.
You can just assume that he actually got a ship from a offscreen adventure similarly to the translator for the dragon you don’t really need to see how he got it

The weird thing is, Ben totally could’ve just become Spidermonkey before going out of the ship. I mean, the suit is literally made for Arachnochimps.
The role I always remember Diedrich for is Warp Darkmatter from the Buzz Lightyear series. I remember finding it very fitting that he also voiced Simian, as they're both revealed to be working for the bad guys for the sake of profit towards the end of their debuts.
I remember him as Hoss Delgado, from Billy and Mandy.

29:45 Echo Echo talking to the phone and using his sonic powers is coolest thing for me.
Ironically the animation for the Pain Fight is now looked back upon in a good way, because of how shitty it was, that it ended up becoming good
I imagine he just instinctively switches back to his native language when excited or on an adrenaline high, then intentionally has to utilize English first, meanwhile Ben understands both languages easily while transformed
I might be alone on this, but I really enjoyed Pet Project since it reintroduces Ship, gives him an ability we've never seen a Mechamorph do before and a reason to be a recurring character(?) The reason Ben can’t use his powers in the suit is because when he transforms back he won’t be wearing it. This is reinforced later in ultimate alien, so the reasoning is solid. Also, claiming Ben can dodge their attacks by using the scene from the beginning of the episode doesn’t work because he was in the form of an alien much faster than a human
@TheGlassesPro You could be right, but the point is it wasn’t a great criticism
@@grimfin3214 The bit about the Omnitrix giving you what you were wearing before is true.
