I like the idea that had this "Vilgax" revealed to be the son of the actual Vilgax and it would have been a huge plot twist. Maybe, the story could be that he has been doing his job in the absence of his father by leading the planet. He learned that his father was defeated by someone named Ben 10 so he decided to challenge Ben by becoming the strongest. Not only he would defeat Ben but would avenge papa Vilgax. This "son" plot would have been revealed here and the final battle could have been more epic with the actual Vilgax showing up.
Ben: don't worry Gwen, ghost freak was one of the original aliens, I had control of him. "Yeah, it's not like you were always afraid or freaked out whenever you transformed into him. Or it had any grudge about being trapped in the Omnitrix for a long time that it freed itself and tried to possess you constantly and even threatened your family. OR TRIED TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD BY BLOCKING THE SUN OR ANYTHING..."
Which would been interesting if Ben and Ghostfreak developed a symbiotic relationship like Bruce Banner and the Devil Hulk from the Immortal Hulk comics.
@@srstriker6420 would be interesting if it more like MoonKnight and they would shift who's in control at random moments and such. Like Ghostfreak defeats the threat but while he's at it attacks Gwen and Kevin and they have to use Gwens mana to contain Ghostfreak until the Omnitrix times out
No ghostfreak doesn't gain control until the statement is finished as actually shown when the eyes change and the omnitrix disappears. What I am saying is right as that part of the statement starts is when ghostfreak should be the one talking instead of Ben just assuming he has control which we see right before the swap.
Wasnt there a female one that worked on the omnitrix. So yeah their species as a whole may know a bit about the omnitrix. A right myaxx secret of the omnitrix.
When Ghostfreak merged with Ben, he should be invulnerable to light. That's the primary reason he wanted to possess Ben in the classic series, because he needed the Omnitrix to be whole again, i.e. walk around in the light. If that wasn't the case, then Ben shouldn't have been able to exist in sunlight when transformed as Ghostfreak.
Yeah that has been retconned. The reason Zs’Skayr is vulnerable to the Sun is because he removed the outer skin. He actually assumes his “full potential” when he’s in “complete darkness” during “Be Afraid of the Dark”. Zs’Skayr’s powers and biology make no sense.
This was truly an episode. It really had characters. Vilgax was very much there. Ben, Gwen and Kevin really did things. The trio's team up with Vilgax resulted in a series of events. Z'Skayr was a villain. The twist at the end was implemented.
He could if he took of his skin. But in OV the Omnitrix seems to increase restrictions on Ben removing it by wrapping Ghostfreak in chains, perhaps to prevent another accident.

A little thing about the Zs'skayr - the original look of Ghostfreak is Ectonurite's double shell, which they use to be safe from sunlight. Question - why in the world did Zs'skayr never think "Hm... Maybe I should put this thing on" the entire time he was being held captive? Sure, it seriously hinders his power, but what would you rather choose - Being in jail, or fighting your captors while being a little weaker? The guy was still shown to be insanely powerful, especially his ability to walk through walls. He could have easily at any moment in time just phase out from his prison ship and do as he pleases, or just straight up murder the entire crew and use the ship to get to his home planet. Man, it's been 5 years and the guy's still missing his brain
I would've preferred if the cloak was an omnitrix creation, that helped contain/weaken z'skayr, while letting the omnitrix user not easily die in sunlight. Thats not what I think it is, just what I want it to be.
I mean, intangible-resistant material exists in Ben 10; Big Chill couldn't phase out of the Plumber's cell. The prison room may just be made out of that.
I'm thinking maybe he can't regenerate it while exposed to bright light. Like it'd break apart before it could fully form to protect him so there's no point wasting the energy trying, better conserve his energy even if it hurts
The secondary skin was never stated to give immunity to sunlight. People just assumed that since Zs'Skayr tore off his own skin when he was burned by sunlight, but the actual episode implies that the Omnitrix or Ben's DNA gives them immunity to light. Even in this episode you see the other fully cloaked Ectonurites hurt and even destroyed by bright light.
I think you can justify Z'Skayr having telekinesis, cause there is a type of ghost that is known for moving objects, a poltergeist. Some takes on a poltergeist interpret it as them being able to move objects from a distance.

Z'Skayr had telekinesis and energy projection in the og series during the Ghostfreak ark of season 3 was it. I'm surprised kuro didn't remember that. Or maybe I'm mistaken?
I think a cool concept would be Ben keeping the ghostfreak transformation after this episode but having to wrestle with Zs’Skayr every time he uses it. Eventually they start trying to work together against a mutual enemy. It could be a Venom/Eddie Brock dynamic. That way we get to see this cool transformation. Maybe we could get some backstory and character development for Zs’Skayr.

I'm surprised, with everything that got added in Omniverse, that there wasn't an episode where Ben Gwen and Max found a way to contact Azmeth after Zs'Skayr became part of the omnitrix again in order to make sure there wouldn't be a repeat of "Ghostfreaked Out." (Or find some plumber tech maguffin to do the same thing). There could've been a line implying Zs'Skayr would be taken to a prison specifically designed to hold him to have this episode make more sense.
I like the scene where the girl hugs Vilgax even if it kinda contradicts his previous characterization. Something about discovering that the villain the audience initially thought was just ruthless is praised as a hero in their home world is super interesting to me. If the writers had a bit of foresight when writing the Classic series to now, it would have been really interesting to see Vilgax have a redemption arc.
nah. vilgax is more like victor von doom sure, in his home planet he is hailed as hero, but everyone everywhere else knows he is a monster to anyone else outside his territory
Something I felt would’ve worked for his OS character is that Ben figures out that he doesn’t actually care about his subjects, but as long as his people support him, the Plumbers can’t touch him on Vilgaxia. And then Vilgax could gloat about it, pointing out how their kindness and need to follow the law means they can’t do anything.
Here's sorta how I parsed this episode: Vilgax frees Zs'Skayr, hoping to learn more in-depth knowledge about the Omnitrix (ie, Vilgax knew what the Omnitrix could do, and how certain functions worked, and even how to augment it for his own gains, but he didn't know the full ins and outs of the Omnitrix that either version of Zs'Skayr would likely know either from the original's aid in collecting DNA samples (which was how he got a piece of himself within the Omnitrix in the first place), or from the Ghostfreak copy in the Codon Stream that became a whole new Zs'Skayr). Zs'Skayr gives Vilgax some of the knowledge he's after, but will only reveal the last bit if Zs'Skayr gets Ben to himself, and then the two make the plot of Zs'Skayr taking Vilgaxia hostage, and Vilgax having to go to get Ben's help. Now what happened next was likely either Zs'Skayr being an overly confident villain, by giving Vilgax the full details of the Codon Stream (likely via the little girl, or even as banter before the two fight for real after Kevin and Gwen are knocked out, but it just doesn't get animated for some reason), only to then reveal that, no, Zs'Skayr wasn't playing around, and was intending to completely take over Vilgaxia, and then gloats about how he's going to , OR, everything in the episode is all going according the Vilgax and Zs'Skayr's plan, until Zs'Skayr reveals his rockets and Vilgax realises he's been double crossed, and whilst he could've handled Zs'Skayr on his own, when Zs'Skayr is merged with Ben, he's able to match Vilgax, and when he tries to also merge w/Vilgax, Zs'Skayr unintentionally transfers his knowledge of the Condon Stream into Vilgax, and thus, either way, Vilgax gets what he wanted, with Ben and co. being none the wiser
My headcanon was always that Ectonurites have so little actual DNA, both in their bodies and in terms of the size of their DNA strands, that the act of taking a sample of Za’skayr for the Omnitrix required basically all of the DNA he had, and functionally imprisoned him. This also explains how he was able to escape the Omnitrix if that sample was literally all of him.
My headcanon as to how Zs'Skayr returned in Alien Force: In "Be Afraid of the Dark", Ben unintentionally required Ghostfreak after Zs'Skayr touched the Omnitrix, Zs'Skayr was destroyed by the Earth's sun but his DNA remained in the watch. Maybe after the Omnitrix Recalibrated itself and locked Ben's classic aliens the Ectonurite DNA somehow escaped and manifested into the Zs'Skayr we see in this episode.
I'd argue it makes more sense that Zs'Skayr escaped after the omnitrix was hacked at the beginning of season 3, but that didn't show up because he wasn't in the watches current rotation.
ORRR. . . what about the time skip between classic and AF? When he finally removed the watch? Some of this was addressed in omniverse, but not everything. It could have easilly happened then. This would then explain even further of Vilgaxes line of "this is your fault, you released him from the omnitrix." which could imply that he wasn't talking about the first time, but the second. Where ben did nothing about it and instead he removed the watch before resolving the issue. In which case, yeah, ben is kinda at fault there. He ran from the mess he made and made it someone elses responsibility. I think that concept is really cool. The repercussions of removing the omnitrix. If that's the case, I'd give the importance of this episode a 4, cause that's a REALLY cool idea to mess with.
I think the random telekinesis is a reference to how in most horror movies, when a house is being haunted by a ghost there is usually stuff floating around because of said ghost.
Apparently the *star system* of Vigax's world is called the *Shadow Realm,* its also near a cosmic rift into the Null Void. In the OG future, Kai missed her son's birthday because she had a diplomatic mission, in the *Shadow Realm.*

Regarding the whole “Vilgax killing civilians” thing, it wouldve been interesting to have Vilgax be aware that they are possessed, but because of his imperfect world view see it as a necessary sacrifice to save the planet as a whole. While having the trio try to restrain them or incapacitate them in some form instead of obliterating them too. I think that would’ve made for some interesting moral dilemmas to be brought up in order to give Ben and this more sympathetic Vilgax something to talk about while going around beating up ghosts.
Just having something similar to the famous scene of superman the animated series. you know, the one where superman is able to free apokolips for like a single minute after defeating darkseid and they are so conditioned to darkseid they immediately choose him back as their ruler like say, have vilgax declare to his people some civilians had to be sacrified for the greater good and everyone actually cheering and even considering it an honor to "be sacrified for vilgax"
My head canon is that the actual Z’skayr is the one from Omniverse, the one from Alien force is another piece of Ghost Freak that was broken off. And Vilgax in my mind was trying to make Ben feel responsible about this in order when he said this was his fault for releasing Ghost freak to get him to come along.
In the Ben 10 video game he does fight Zs'Skayr on Anur Phaetos, so while it's not canon the original should be around somewhere, unless he died earlier somehow. I thought the one from Alien Force was the result of the DNA being forcibly removed from Primus, but then that begs the question of how he grew a complete physical form.

I always wondered why Ben never went heatblast against ghost freak. Like he’s literally a walking sun emitting tons of ultraviolet light. Especially if he went supernova that’s a lot of radiation.
The ectonurites would also take a lot longer to fly through space themselves, I would imagine, compared to making ships. To bring back that walk-car analogy, even the fastest humans cannot outrun cars. Though I'm not sure what would limit the speed of a ghostly flight.
Also they’d be mostly unprotected from the light of the many MANY stars in. Space, like even in atmosphere where the light has its fangs trimmed a fair bit direct sunlight still causes them to vaporize, so flying in the vacuum of space would probably be to much for them even with whatever that weird cloth shield thing that apparently is a thing.

@@pikminman13 my thought process was they already atomize in direct sunlight (from earth a star which isn’t all that potent), for… some reason? (Is that ever explained?) and well sunlight is honestly pretty weak compared to the stuff in the vacuum of space, and it requires extremely specialized equipment for humans to be fine up there and if humans are hundreds if not thousands of times more resistant to this then ectonurites then they would need much stronger stuff then humans need, (since space suits don’t actually stop everything that hits them among a few other things) therefor ships would be the best option as you’d need thousands of suits all built like a truck for them to survive in space anyway.
I’m disappointed that Vilgax never called Ghostfreak name, Zs’Skayr or he never tell him. Ben as Ghostfreak transformation is painful but brilliant. Also Ben saying “You guys, miss the whole thing” really ticked me off as he nearly killed his friends. Earlier these Red and Sliver guys look like the Manhunters in Justice League: DC (Season 1).
I think you could explain Vilgax's drastic change through Vilgaxia. Maybe the previous king chose Vilgax as his successor, or it was Vilgax's father, and over the five years Vilgax had to change himself to fit the role as king for his people. He still has his evil side and so wants to conquer the world. I think they could've made a whole episode or half an episode going into Vilgax's activity in the five year gap between Classic and Alien Force to possibly explain why he's different
Yeah I was under the impression during the 5 year gap between Ben throwing him into space and him returning in AF season 3 Vilgax had some time to think and better himself (just a little bit). I get the feeling they were trying do a more Genghis Khan sort of way with Vilgax with the whole he's a brutal conqueror but has done a lot of positives for his own people so from their POV he's a hero. Also Dwayne McDuffie confirmed on a Ben 10 Q&A forum that Vilgax managed to fend off the Highbreeds taking over his territory. I would actually kill for an episode showing those events
Okay. This is the most hilarious breakdown I've seen especially trying to figure out Vilgax's true purpose of asking Ben to deal with Ghostfreak/Zs'Skayr. Definitely crazy. One thing for certain is that Vilgax always comes up with complex and manipulative plans of dealing with heroes and villains if they double cross him. Can't say that I consider 'Ghost Town' Episode the best or the worst, just mediocre or okay.
Ectonurites being able to remote control people kinda makes sense when you remember that Vladats can do that too. It's a shame that power for Zs'Skayr never comes up again, it would have been cool to see Lord Transyl and Zs'Skayr team up to possess people instead of Lord Transyl just doing all of it in The Vampire Strikes Back
This used to be my favourite episode of Alien Force Season 3. Like Ash I was a big fan of Ghostfreak as a kid, and then watching him and Vilgax AND Ben fighting each other in a cool setting and twist and turns along the way was just great 👍. Also I did love the scene saving the little girl, as if to show that yes he’s the bad guy in the eyes of others but for his people he’s there hero and saviour, a nice character detail
I can live with Vilgax’s change. Tho weirdly I love him, but I get why people don’t like him. Ironically, I think the Reboot Vilgax is the best Vilgax. Anyway, the way they handled Zs’Skayr was just baaaaaad. Not a fan. They should have called him Zs’Skayr here. And like Ash suggested, make this the original one and the Omnitrix copy just acted as a remote avatar. Vilgax: “Ghostfreak. I will free you if you tell me the secrets of the Omnitrix.” Zs’Skayr: “Ghostfreak is the name the child gave my avatar on Earth. I am the original, I controlled it from this cell. My name is Zs’Skayr.” Vilgax: “I do not care. Tell me what I want.” Edit: And later Ben explains that he used the Omnitrix to capture him the same way Zs’Skayr first put his sentient DNA in there. No remote avatar that is separate, he just captures. That being said, they should have drawn Ben holding the Omnitrix in front of him with the yellow setting. Regardless. Awesome fight between 2 original big bads. Edit 2: 19:34 Omni Zs’Gax. Now Zs’Skayr controls the Omnitrix and Vilgax. Using his new control of Ben, and fusing the 3 of them, he can now access all the transformations while possessing Vilgax.
8:58 Remember seeing some head canons being based around ectonurites essentially Just being the infected populations of other species through this process, its seems if that were the case and Zs’skayr specifically weaponized the process. Solidifying him as his own sort of free will destroying despot was definitely a good character choice and his new powers were cool as well. Personally I think the telekinesis is him learning some form of magic rather than being a species thing. Despite his changes through every series he’s a villain that remains really good throughout! I Just wish they explained his returns better pfft! As fir the deception plot, I think vilgax Was just hiding the fact that his tentacles hide accidentally released ghostfreak onto his world, and just blamed ben to guilt trip him. Then again y’alls idea makes sense and I’d believe if they had made that the plan from the start.
Ghost Town was one of those episodes that made Vilgax more 'comic Book reference', in this case, Dr. Victor von Doom (depending on the writer) is 'Villain' to the world but a 'Hero' to his people.
I actually really like the idea that was thrown out in this video that this shouldn’t have been Vilgax but another character perhaps his son. It would have been neat to see more of Vilgax’s people and having a separate character to explore that would have been better then changing Vilgax to open that avenue of exploration.
9:11 I think it’s because Zs’Skayr leaves a strand of DNA in the bodies of the Chimera sui generis after flying through them and that strand is possessing the residents
I'm thinking how Ghostfreak takes over the people is that he leaves say small part of his cells inside a body, and once he leaves it the cell's kind of devour the host as nutrients to grow into a mature Ectonurite rapidly or just kind of mutates them

As we saw, the Ghostfreak transformation was back in the omnitrix after his final death in the original series and apparently Azmuth extracted Zs’skayr and imprisoned him. He is aware of Primus and such because he was removed from the codon stream.
For whatever reason the little “oh” noise I made after Vilgax’s arm details popped in got me laughing so much that I had to rewind the video to see what I missed.
Diamond head's hands broke hitting Classic Vilgax. He didn't even move with Xlr8 punch. In back with Vengeance, Classic Vilgax holds a explosion on hand and didn't even move a bit. And this Vilgax defeated by dropping huge diamonds on him. This is one of biggest changes I hate about this.
I want to say, i like the idea of Vilgax being beloved ruler on his planet and nightmare everywhere else. Makes me think about Doctor Doom, for sure gives him a little more depth. Tho, indeed, this also disconnects him from Classic Vilgax
One thing still doesn’t make any sense how was the sunlight effective as he merged with Ben. As in the original series I remember that Zs’Skayr said that when he merge with ben’s DNA the sunlight will have no effect.Also the episode would have ended soon if Ben just reverted back to human after transforming to ghostfreak.
According with the Pop-Up Trivia, Zs'Skayr needed to merged with Ben because, thanks to his time as a Transformation in the watch, he needs Ben's DNA to be completely whole again.
Vilgax stole Ultimos' powers so no he's not sling squiding himself, he is just flying through space. But on the other hand if this is a DC's Parasite situation, where Vilgax got Ultimos' weaknesses as well, that means Ben just needs an alien that can create or is made up of chocolate to defeat Vilgax.

I really like the idea of having guests on these. The extra set of eyes, the extra input, the tangents you can go into. If you made this a regular thing for the full length breakdowns I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one happy to see it.

To be fair, when I first watched this episode I had already assumed that Zs'Skayr in this one came from the DNA sample that was taken at the end of "Be Afraid of the Dark." It just seemed like the most logical conclusion to me. And for him turning Vilgaxians into Ectonurites, I think he has a full on conversion ability that he's most likely used as his original self
For that mind control thing from Ghostfreak to the aliens, I think it's like the same thing Baby from Dragonball GT does his mind control, possessing someone and leaving some sort of dna or a part of himself then leaving, kinda answers the question of him having a version of himself as the dna on the omnitrix
My interpretation of ghostfreak from what I know of the show is he moved his consciousness to the DNA sample put into the Omnitrix while that was happening his real body went into a comatose auto pilot state when the duplicate body was destroyed he returned to his original body. What he does when he is taking control of people is he is possessing them and leaving cells that possess them but are in autopilot this would also allow him to control the army and switch bodies on a whim but not have full control of them all.

@@orbboom6119 No. Zs'Skayr said that he can survive from a single piece of his DNA; basically, the Omnitrix accidentally created a clone of him. There are at least four Zs'Skayrs: Clones Zero, One, Two, and Three. Clone Zero is the original Zs'Skayr (the one that possessed the Flourauna). Clone One became Ghostfreak and died in the clock tower, got resurrected by the Halloween Trio, and died again in space, but not before creating Clone Two by touching the Omnitrix. Clone Zero tried to take over Bellwood when Ben was 11 in OV, but got teleported back to the Anur System. AF Zs'Skayr's knowledge of the recalibrated Omnitrix indicates that he's Clone Two and got out of the Omnitrix offscreen. He died on Vilgaxia, but created Clone Three when he was reunlocked. Clone Zero returns in OV during the Galactic Monsters arc before being killed by Atomix. Clone Three lost his Zs'Skayr traits at some point between Ghostfreak's AF and UA appearances, likely thanks to Azmuth. Clone Three is the Ghostfreak seen in UA and OV.
One thing I never understood is why light kills Ghostfreak if he took Control over Ben. In the classic show, Ghostfreak said that with the Omnitrix he could survive to the sun

My interpretation is that this was really just a needlessly complex plan by Vilgax to gain some more info about the Omnitrix, I mean during the fight we saw him hold up well enough before Zs'Skayr called his underlings. Also at 18:50 I think the flaming fists is supposed to be the same move he used to surpass Bigchills intangibility, just with a weird effect on it.
Something I really liked about this episode was how it showed another side of vilgax that we as the viewers would normally not get to see in what kind of leader he is and what his species as a whole think of him
Weird thing: Since the creators insisted on keeping the color of magic purple for some reason in UAF, they knew it would look off with Hex, so Hex wasn’t given any action scenes at all It could’ve been easily fixed if pure mana attacks from Gwen were purple, and all actual spells had different colors
This is actually my favourite episode of Ben 10 ever. It has some issues, but there are so many more. Ben being able to stand as Vilgaxes equal, Zs'Skayr returning and getting extended combat scenes, Vilgax getting some form of humanity to go with his ruthlessness? And the transformation Ben gets is amazing, and so is the fight the two villains get.
Vilgax seeming to genuinely care about his species is honestly one of the things that UAF did for his character that I honestly really like. It’s nice to see how he’s genuinely a good leader in the eyes of his people.
5:47 When I watched this as a kid I assumed that it was implied ghostfreak knew about the secrets of the omni trip because he was inside of it for so long, which wouldn’t make sense if this is his original body and not the one trapped inside the omnitrix. There are no "original and Omnitrix versions" of Zs'skyar The one inside the Omnitrix that escapes in OS S2 *is* the original Zs'skayr. They never took a DNA sample, he got trapped whole in the Omnitrix. Also, I think ORAsh is right. In Ben 10 there are different types of Intangibility, as confirmed in "Too Hot to Handle" when Pandor battles Bigchill. They were unable to hit each other, since Bigchill could phase tru Pandor's beams and Pandor's Intangibility is Heat based (so he couldn't tackle Bigchill, unlike when Bigchill battled the white Necroffrigians, who could actually cancel his intangibility due to both having the same type)
My theory Is that maybe the Dna sample and original ghost freak could be connected like a hive mind Só maybe once the Dna was separated from the original he was dormant But once the ghost freak escaped the information on the ghost freak inside the omnitrix went tô the the original That would explain How 1. he knows Secrets of the omnitrix 2. How 2 could exist and bê the same at the same time
I always liked the concept of this Episode [kind of reminds me of Ben 10's version of Web of Shadows with Zs'Skayr taking people over like Venom did in that game ] I also liked that despite the character's change that this was the only episode where all of the Act Villains of the original series Vilgax, Kevin 11 and Ghostfreak appear in the same episode.

The fact that he doesn't know how to use it doesn't come up until Primus. I'd say the episodes were aired out of order, but that episode is a direct continuation of this one. 7:34 I think that's just Ben trying to dick with Vilgax by rubbing salt in the wound. 13:45 That could work so well: Say Vilgax hasn't been seen since his last fight with Ben (Either Secrets of the Omnitrix or an Omniverse flashback), and as a result has been presumed dead. His son then returns to the Ben Prime dimension to avenge his father. This could also justify him not knowing everything about the Omnitrix. Heck, you could even say this is just a step in a plan to bring the real Vilgax back, either this season or in Ultimate Alien.
Even though Kevin is in a mutated form I believe he could still put clothes on over his mutated parts I guess because in the final battle when Ben's omnitrate gets destroyed he turns back into his human form and all he has is just that pair of black underwear
Oof, ya, this episode is an interesting case. On the one hand it has some neat concepts, like Ben and Vilgax teaming up, getting to see more of the new Vilgax, and Zs'Skayr return in general. But as you guys mentioned, those concepts come with the problem of clashing with the original series, and since Alien Force has been trying so hard for a while to be different and it's own thing from the original series, you can tell that the writers did try hard to make these concepts work for both worlds. At the very least I can apperiacte the idea of trying something new with these characters, instead of playing things the exact same and changing nothing. Even if change doesn't work, I can at least acknowledge the effort to try something new or different.
I always thought that ghost-freak was the original and the one that died was dna ghost-freak. Original Ghost-freak was freed by vilgax in exchange for the omnitrix’s secrets but then ghostfreak betrayed vilgax resulting in vilgax needing help from Ben but the only way to get bens help without alerting him and the trio of his future plans were to tell white lies (also uses it to divert blame and guilt trip Ben)
A couple of possible ideas or theories of mine: 1.Maybe the light that keeps Za'Sakyir pinned is using a different type of light? 2.Za'Sakyir might be turning them into puppets or extra bodies for him. I always wondered if the GhostFreak that Ben could become was only a puppet of Za'Sakyir that he used to infiltrate in the watch and he only let Ben control GhostFreak in order to stay undiscovered. After he learned what he wanted from the Omnitrix, Za'Sakyir took control over the puppet back and once out of the watch, used it as a decoy until it got destroyed. It would explain why Vilgax wanted Za'Sakyir's knowledge from the watch. 3. I think they're building ships because they can't survive the light of different and multiple stars.

I like the idea that had this "Vilgax" revealed to be the son of the actual Vilgax and it would have been a huge plot twist. Maybe, the story could be that he has been doing his job in the absence of his father by leading the planet. He learned that his father was defeated by someone named Ben 10 so he decided to challenge Ben by becoming the strongest. Not only he would defeat Ben but would avenge papa Vilgax. This "son" plot would have been revealed here and the final battle could have been more epic with the actual Vilgax showing up.

That's the primary reason he wanted to possess Ben in the classic series, because he needed the Omnitrix to be whole again, i.e. walk around in the light. If that wasn't the case, then Ben shouldn't have been able to exist in sunlight when transformed as Ghostfreak.
Yeah that has been retconned. The reason Zs’Skayr is vulnerable to the Sun is because he removed the outer skin. He actually assumes his “full potential” when he’s in “complete darkness” during “Be Afraid of the Dark”.

A little thing about the Zs'skayr - the original look of Ghostfreak is Ectonurite's double shell, which they use to be safe from sunlight. Question - why in the world did Zs'skayr never think "Hm... Maybe I should put this thing on" the entire time he was being held captive? Sure, it seriously hinders his power, but what would you rather choose - Being in jail, or fighting your captors while being a little weaker? The guy was still shown to be insanely powerful, especially his ability to walk through walls. He could have easily at any moment in time just phase out from his prison ship and do as he pleases, or just straight up murder the entire crew and use the ship to get to his home planet. Man, it's been 5 years and the guy's still missing his brain

The secondary skin was never stated to give immunity to sunlight. People just assumed that since Zs'Skayr tore off his own skin when he was burned by sunlight, but the actual episode implies that the Omnitrix or Ben's DNA gives them immunity to light. Even in this episode you see the other fully cloaked Ectonurites hurt and even destroyed by bright light.
I think you can justify Z'Skayr having telekinesis, cause there is a type of ghost that is known for moving objects, a poltergeist. Some takes on a poltergeist interpret it as them being able to move objects from a distance.

I think a cool concept would be Ben keeping the ghostfreak transformation after this episode but having to wrestle with Zs’Skayr every time he uses it. Eventually they start trying to work together against a mutual enemy. It could be a Venom/Eddie Brock dynamic. That way we get to see this cool transformation. Maybe we could get some backstory and character development for Zs’Skayr.

There could've been a line implying Zs'Skayr would be taken to a prison specifically designed to hold him to have this episode make more sense.

I like the scene where the girl hugs Vilgax even if it kinda contradicts his previous characterization. Something about discovering that the villain the audience initially thought was just ruthless is praised as a hero in their home world is super interesting to me. If the writers had a bit of foresight when writing the Classic series to now, it would have been really interesting to see Vilgax have a redemption arc.

Something I felt would’ve worked for his OS character is that Ben figures out that he doesn’t actually care about his subjects, but as long as his people support him, the Plumbers can’t touch him on Vilgaxia. Here's sorta how I parsed this episode: Vilgax frees Zs'Skayr, hoping to learn more in-depth knowledge about the Omnitrix (ie, Vilgax knew what the Omnitrix could do, and how certain functions worked, and even how to augment it for his own gains, but he didn't know the full ins and outs of the Omnitrix that either version of Zs'Skayr would likely know either from the original's aid in collecting DNA samples (which was how he got a piece of himself within the Omnitrix in the first place), or from the Ghostfreak copy in the Codon Stream that became a whole new Zs'Skayr). Zs'Skayr gives Vilgax some of the knowledge he's after, but will only reveal the last bit if Zs'Skayr gets Ben to himself, and then the two make the plot of Zs'Skayr taking Vilgaxia hostage, and Vilgax having to go to get Ben's help. Now what happened next was likely either Zs'Skayr being an overly confident villain, by giving Vilgax the full details of the Codon Stream (likely via the little girl, or even as banter before the two fight for real after Kevin and Gwen are knocked out, but it just doesn't get animated for some reason), only to then reveal that, no, Zs'Skayr wasn't playing around, and was intending to completely take over Vilgaxia, and then gloats about how he's going to , OR, everything in the episode is all going according the Vilgax and Zs'Skayr's plan, until Zs'Skayr reveals his rockets and Vilgax realises he's been double crossed, and whilst he could've handled Zs'Skayr on his own, when Zs'Skayr is merged with Ben, he's able to match Vilgax, and when he tries to also merge w/Vilgax, Zs'Skayr unintentionally transfers his knowledge of the Condon Stream into Vilgax, and thus, either way, Vilgax gets what he wanted, with Ben and co. being none the wiser
My headcanon was always that Ectonurites have so little actual DNA, both in their bodies and in terms of the size of their DNA strands, that the act of taking a sample of Za’skayr for the Omnitrix required basically all of the DNA he had, and functionally imprisoned him. This also explains how he was able to escape the Omnitrix if that sample was literally all of him.

My headcanon as to how Zs'Skayr returned in Alien Force: In "Be Afraid of the Dark", Ben unintentionally required Ghostfreak after Zs'Skayr touched the Omnitrix, Zs'Skayr was destroyed by the Earth's sun but his DNA remained in the watch.
Maybe after the Omnitrix Recalibrated itself and locked Ben's classic aliens the Ectonurite DNA somehow escaped and manifested into the Zs'Skayr we see in this episode.
I'd argue it makes more sense that Zs'Skayr escaped after the omnitrix was hacked at the beginning of season 3, but that didn't show up because he wasn't in the watches current rotation.
ORRR. . . what about the time skip between classic and AF? When he finally removed the watch? Some of this was addressed in omniverse, but not everything. It could have easilly happened then.
This would then explain even further of Vilgaxes line of "this is your fault, you released him from the omnitrix." which could imply that he wasn't talking about the first time, but the second. Where ben did nothing about it and instead he removed the watch before resolving the issue. In which case, yeah, ben is kinda at fault there. He ran from the mess he made and made it someone elses responsibility. I think that concept is really cool. The repercussions of removing the omnitrix.
If that's the case, I'd give the importance of this episode a 4, cause that's a REALLY cool idea to mess with.

Regarding the whole “Vilgax killing civilians” thing, it wouldve been interesting to have Vilgax be aware that they are possessed, but because of his imperfect world view see it as a necessary sacrifice to save the planet as a whole. While having the trio try to restrain them or incapacitate them in some form instead of obliterating them too.
I think that would’ve made for some interesting moral dilemmas to be brought up in order to give Ben and this more sympathetic Vilgax something to talk about while going around beating up ghosts.

My head canon is that the actual Z’skayr is the one from Omniverse, the one from Alien force is another piece of Ghost Freak that was broken off. And Vilgax in my mind was trying to make Ben feel responsible about this in order when he said this was his fault for releasing Ghost freak to get him to come along.
In the Ben 10 video game he does fight Zs'Skayr on Anur Phaetos, so while it's not canon the original should be around somewhere, unless he died earlier somehow. I thought the one from Alien Force was the result of the DNA being forcibly removed from Primus, but then that begs the question of how he grew a complete physical form.
That would explain the significant design changes, like the hood and right side up skull. As well as the scythe he carries around.

I always wondered why Ben never went heatblast against ghost freak. Like he’s literally a walking sun emitting tons of ultraviolet light. Especially if he went supernova that’s a lot of radiation.
The ectonurites would also take a lot longer to fly through space themselves, I would imagine, compared to making ships. To bring back that walk-car analogy, even the fastest humans cannot outrun cars. Though I'm not sure what would limit the speed of a ghostly flight.

Also they’d be mostly unprotected from the light of the many MANY stars in. Space, like even in atmosphere where the light has its fangs trimmed a fair bit direct sunlight still causes them to vaporize, so flying in the vacuum of space would probably be to much for them even with whatever that weird cloth shield thing that apparently is a thing.

(Is that ever explained?) and well sunlight is honestly pretty weak compared to the stuff in the vacuum of space, and it requires extremely specialized equipment for humans to be fine up there and if humans are hundreds if not thousands of times more resistant to this then ectonurites then they would need much stronger stuff then humans need, (since space suits don’t actually stop everything that hits them among a few other things) therefor ships would be the best option as you’d need thousands of suits all built like a truck for them to survive in space anyway.

I think you could explain Vilgax's drastic change through Vilgaxia. Maybe the previous king chose Vilgax as his successor, or it was Vilgax's father, and over the five years Vilgax had to change himself to fit the role as king for his people. He still has his evil side and so wants to conquer the world. I think they could've made a whole episode or half an episode going into Vilgax's activity in the five year gap between Classic and Alien Force to possibly explain why he's different
Yeah I was under the impression during the 5 year gap between Ben throwing him into space and him returning in AF season 3 Vilgax had some time to think and better himself (just a little bit). I get the feeling they were trying do a more Genghis Khan sort of way with Vilgax with the whole he's a brutal conqueror but has done a lot of positives for his own people so from their POV he's a hero.
Also Dwayne McDuffie confirmed on a Ben 10 Q&A forum that Vilgax managed to fend off the Highbreeds taking over his territory. I would actually kill for an episode showing those events
Okay. This is the most hilarious breakdown I've seen especially trying to figure out Vilgax's true purpose of asking Ben to deal with Ghostfreak/Zs'Skayr. Definitely crazy. One thing for certain is that Vilgax always comes up with complex and manipulative plans of dealing with heroes and villains if they double cross him.
Can't say that I consider 'Ghost Town' Episode the best or the worst, just mediocre or okay.

Ectonurites being able to remote control people kinda makes sense when you remember that Vladats can do that too. It's a shame that power for Zs'Skayr never comes up again, it would have been cool to see Lord Transyl and Zs'Skayr team up to possess people instead of Lord Transyl just doing all of it in The Vampire Strikes Back
This used to be my favourite episode of Alien Force Season 3. Like Ash I was a big fan of Ghostfreak as a kid, and then watching him and Vilgax AND Ben fighting each other in a cool setting and twist and turns along the way was just great 👍. Also I did love the scene saving the little girl, as if to show that yes he’s the bad guy in the eyes of others but for his people he’s there hero and saviour, a nice character detail
This Ghostfreak transformation was the most metal transformation in the entire series.
I can live with Vilgax’s change. Tho weirdly I love him, but I get why people don’t like him. Ironically, I think the Reboot Vilgax is the best Vilgax.
Anyway, the way they handled Zs’Skayr was just baaaaaad. Not a fan. They should have called him Zs’Skayr here. And like Ash suggested, make this the original one and the Omnitrix copy just acted as a remote avatar.
Vilgax: “Ghostfreak. I will free you if you tell me the secrets of the Omnitrix.”
Zs’Skayr: “Ghostfreak is the name the child gave my avatar on Earth. I am the original, I controlled it from this cell. My name is Zs’Skayr.”
Vilgax: “I do not care. Tell me what I want.”
Edit: And later Ben explains that he used the Omnitrix to capture him the same way Zs’Skayr first put his sentient DNA in there. No remote avatar that is separate, he just captures.
That being said, they should have drawn Ben holding the Omnitrix in front of him with the yellow setting.
Regardless. Awesome fight between 2 original big bads.
Edit 2: 19:34 Omni Zs’Gax. Now Zs’Skayr controls the Omnitrix and Vilgax. Using his new control of Ben, and fusing the 3 of them, he can now access all the transformations while possessing Vilgax.
8:58 Remember seeing some head canons being based around ectonurites essentially Just being the infected populations of other species through this process, its seems if that were the case and Zs’skayr specifically weaponized the process. Solidifying him as his own sort of free will destroying despot was definitely a good character choice and his new powers were cool as well. Personally I think the telekinesis is him learning some form of magic rather than being a species thing. Despite his changes through every series he’s a villain that remains really good throughout! I Just wish they explained his returns better pfft!
As fir the deception plot, I think vilgax Was just hiding the fact that his tentacles hide accidentally released ghostfreak onto his world, and just blamed ben to guilt trip him. Then again y’alls idea makes sense and I’d believe if they had made that the plan from the start.
Ghost Town was one of those episodes that made Vilgax more 'comic Book reference', in this case, Dr. Victor von Doom (depending on the writer) is 'Villain' to the world but a 'Hero' to his people.

I actually really like the idea that was thrown out in this video that this shouldn’t have been Vilgax but another character perhaps his son. It would have been neat to see more of Vilgax’s people and having a separate character to explore that would have been better then changing Vilgax to open that avenue of exploration.
9:11 I think it’s because Zs’Skayr leaves a strand of DNA in the bodies of the Chimera sui generis after flying through them and that strand is possessing the residents
I'm thinking how Ghostfreak takes over the people is that he leaves say small part of his cells inside a body, and once he leaves it the cell's kind of devour the host as nutrients to grow into a mature Ectonurite rapidly or just kind of mutates them

I actually like the idea of a ruthless conquerer being kind to his own subjects. It makes Vilgax more complex then Mua-haha evil
As we saw, the Ghostfreak transformation was back in the omnitrix after his final death in the original series and apparently Azmuth extracted Zs’skayr and imprisoned him. He is aware of Primus and such because he was removed from the codon stream.

In back with Vengeance, Classic Vilgax holds a explosion on hand and didn't even move a bit.
And this Vilgax defeated by dropping huge diamonds on him.

I want to say, i like the idea of Vilgax being beloved ruler on his planet and nightmare everywhere else. Makes me think about Doctor Doom, for sure gives him a little more depth. Tho, indeed, this also disconnects him from Classic Vilgax
One thing still doesn’t make any sense how was the sunlight effective as he merged with Ben. As in the original series I remember that Zs’Skayr said that when he merge with ben’s DNA the sunlight will have no effect.Also the episode would have ended soon if Ben just reverted back to human after transforming to ghostfreak.

According with the Pop-Up Trivia, Zs'Skayr needed to merged with Ben because, thanks to his time as a Transformation in the watch, he needs Ben's DNA to be completely whole again.
Vilgax stole Ultimos' powers so no he's not sling squiding himself, he is just flying through space.
But on the other hand if this is a DC's Parasite situation, where Vilgax got Ultimos' weaknesses as well, that means Ben just needs an alien that can create or is made up of chocolate to defeat Vilgax.

To be fair, when I first watched this episode I had already assumed that Zs'Skayr in this one came from the DNA sample that was taken at the end of "Be Afraid of the Dark." It just seemed like the most logical conclusion to me.
And for him turning Vilgaxians into Ectonurites, I think he has a full on conversion ability that he's most likely used as his original self
For that mind control thing from Ghostfreak to the aliens, I think it's like the same thing Baby from Dragonball GT does his mind control, possessing someone and leaving some sort of dna or a part of himself then leaving, kinda answers the question of him having a version of himself as the dna on the omnitrix

My interpretation of ghostfreak from what I know of the show is he moved his consciousness to the DNA sample put into the Omnitrix while that was happening his real body went into a comatose auto pilot state when the duplicate body was destroyed he returned to his original body.
What he does when he is taking control of people is he is possessing them and leaving cells that possess them but are in autopilot this would also allow him to control the army and switch bodies on a whim but not have full control of them all.
I was literally wondering yesterday if there should be two "ghostfreaks" one from the omnitrix sample that escaped and one that the sample was taken from. Maybe the original died somewhere somehow and just regrew from ben

@@orbboom6119 No. Zs'Skayr said that he can survive from a single piece of his DNA; basically, the Omnitrix accidentally created a clone of him. There are at least four Zs'Skayrs: Clones Zero, One, Two, and Three. Clone Zero is the original Zs'Skayr (the one that possessed the Flourauna).
Clone One became Ghostfreak and died in the clock tower, got resurrected by the Halloween Trio, and died again in space, but not before creating Clone Two by touching the Omnitrix.
Clone Zero tried to take over Bellwood when Ben was 11 in OV, but got teleported back to the Anur System.
AF Zs'Skayr's knowledge of the recalibrated Omnitrix indicates that he's Clone Two and got out of the Omnitrix offscreen. He died on Vilgaxia, but created Clone Three when he was reunlocked.
Clone Zero returns in OV during the Galactic Monsters arc before being killed by Atomix.
Clone Three lost his Zs'Skayr traits at some point between Ghostfreak's AF and UA appearances, likely thanks to Azmuth. Clone Three is the Ghostfreak seen in UA and OV.

My interpretation is that this was really just a needlessly complex plan by Vilgax to gain some more info about the Omnitrix, I mean during the fight we saw him hold up well enough before Zs'Skayr called his underlings.
Also at 18:50 I think the flaming fists is supposed to be the same move he used to surpass Bigchills intangibility, just with a weird effect on it.
Something I really liked about this episode was how it showed another side of vilgax that we as the viewers would normally not get to see in what kind of leader he is and what his species as a whole think of him
Weird thing: Since the creators insisted on keeping the color of magic purple for some reason in UAF, they knew it would look off with Hex, so Hex wasn’t given any action scenes at all
It could’ve been easily fixed if pure mana attacks from Gwen were purple, and all actual spells had different colors

This is actually my favourite episode of Ben 10 ever. It has some issues, but there are so many more. Ben being able to stand as Vilgaxes equal, Zs'Skayr returning and getting extended combat scenes, Vilgax getting some form of humanity to go with his ruthlessness? And the transformation Ben gets is amazing, and so is the fight the two villains get.
Vilgax seeming to genuinely care about his species is honestly one of the things that UAF did for his character that I honestly really like. It’s nice to see how he’s genuinely a good leader in the eyes of his people.
5:47 When I watched this as a kid I assumed that it was implied ghostfreak knew about the secrets of the omni trip because he was inside of it for so long, which wouldn’t make sense if this is his original body and not the one trapped inside the omnitrix. Plus, he was trapped inside the original omnitrix, and like they mention it has since recalibrated.

There are no "original and Omnitrix versions" of Zs'skyar
The one inside the Omnitrix that escapes in OS S2 *is* the original Zs'skayr. They never took a DNA sample, he got trapped whole in the Omnitrix.

In Ben 10 there are different types of Intangibility, as confirmed in "Too Hot to Handle" when Pandor battles Bigchill. They were unable to hit each other, since Bigchill could phase tru Pandor's beams and Pandor's Intangibility is Heat based (so he couldn't tackle Bigchill, unlike when Bigchill battled the white Necroffrigians, who could actually cancel his intangibility due to both having the same type)
My theory
Is that maybe the Dna sample and original ghost freak could be connected like a hive mind
Só maybe once the Dna was separated from the original he was dormant
But once the ghost freak escaped the information on the ghost freak inside the omnitrix went tô the the original
That would explain How
1. he knows Secrets of the omnitrix
2. How 2 could exist and bê the same at the same time
I always liked the concept of this Episode [kind of reminds me of Ben 10's version of Web of Shadows with Zs'Skayr taking people over like Venom did in that game ] I also liked that despite the character's change that this was the only episode where all of the Act Villains of the original series Vilgax, Kevin 11 and Ghostfreak appear in the same episode.
5:41 That idea seems a bit jarring, though, because at this point we and Vilgax have no reason to assume his knowledge of the Omnitrix doesn't extend to the recalibrated version. The fact that he doesn't know how to use it doesn't come up until Primus.
I'd say the episodes were aired out of order, but that episode is a direct continuation of this one.

13:45 That could work so well: Say Vilgax hasn't been seen since his last fight with Ben (Either Secrets of the Omnitrix or an Omniverse flashback), and as a result has been presumed dead. His son then returns to the Ben Prime dimension to avenge his father. This could also justify him not knowing everything about the Omnitrix. Heck, you could even say this is just a step in a plan to bring the real Vilgax back, either this season or in Ultimate Alien.

Even though Kevin is in a mutated form I believe he could still put clothes on over his mutated parts I guess because in the final battle when Ben's omnitrate gets destroyed he turns back into his human form and all he has is just that pair of black underwear
Oof, ya, this episode is an interesting case. On the one hand it has some neat concepts, like Ben and Vilgax teaming up, getting to see more of the new Vilgax, and Zs'Skayr return in general. But as you guys mentioned, those concepts come with the problem of clashing with the original series, and since Alien Force has been trying so hard for a while to be different and it's own thing from the original series, you can tell that the writers did try hard to make these concepts work for both worlds. At the very least I can apperiacte the idea of trying something new with these characters, instead of playing things the exact same and changing nothing. Even if change doesn't work, I can at least acknowledge the effort to try something new or different.

I always thought that ghost-freak was the original and the one that died was dna ghost-freak.
Original Ghost-freak was freed by vilgax in exchange for the omnitrix’s secrets but then ghostfreak betrayed vilgax resulting in vilgax needing help from Ben but the only way to get bens help without alerting him and the trio of his future plans were to tell white lies (also uses it to divert blame and guilt trip Ben)
Ok the logic beside, Ben getting himself possessed to get Ghostfreak’s dna sample was hype as hell
A couple of possible ideas or theories of mine:
1.Maybe the light that keeps Za'Sakyir pinned is using a different type of light?
2.Za'Sakyir might be turning them into puppets or extra bodies for him. I always wondered if the GhostFreak that Ben could become was only a puppet of Za'Sakyir that he used to infiltrate in the watch and he only let Ben control GhostFreak in order to stay undiscovered. After he learned what he wanted from the Omnitrix, Za'Sakyir took control over the puppet back and once out of the watch, used it as a decoy until it got destroyed. It would explain why Vilgax wanted Za'Sakyir's knowledge from the watch.
3. I think they're building ships because they can't survive the light of different and multiple stars.
