Did William Regal cross the line with Goldberg? Let us know in the comments below!
He should have grassed the agent up, there and then
No I don’t think it was his fault at all. He did say there was always a lack of communication in WCW. Not the first time I’ve heard of this. I’ve heard of this regarding Starrcade 1997 and Bash At The Beach 2000.
NO,
REGAL ALWAYS TELLS THE TRUTH,
IT WAS THE AGENTS FAULT,
REGAL WAS JUST DOING HIS JOB,
WATCH THE MATCH ITS ON RUclips????
Bill was Green as Chicken 💩💩💩
Kevin Sullivan was asked about the match on WSI by James. He says
it wasn't Regal's fault, as management told him go out and have a competitive
match, Sullivan also says the match time limit was set so Regal could
not cut the match short. He then goes on to state it's our fault
[those of us behind the scene planning the matches] because Goldberg
was not ready for that kind of match with someone like Regal.
WCW overall had terrible communication, like the time WCW paid $50
to FedEx Chris Jericho an empty package.
Bill Goldberg having the nerve to complain about a head kick is wild.
Damn, great point, when he ended Bret Harts career!!!!!
He also broke Scott Steiner's orbital bone in his face and The Giants Sternum! From the sounds of it he at least bruised up everyone he faced so I look at this match as a lethal dose of his own medicine...
Bret Hart complains too much.

@@whitewhale9012That doesn't make any sense. As Regal says in the video the match time was planned. It's not like the match ran over. Regal did what he was told to do. They could have cut the match at any time and gone to a commercial. Goldberg was at fault not Regal.
Are people STILL asking him about this? Jesus man William Regal has been asked about this at least 100 times now.
For real. It wasn't even a big deal and most people forgot it even happened until these sorts of interviews became more common.

More like a 1000 bro. Shit was over 20 years ago it's probably annoying af
It is old, trite and tired cliche. like for these two stories: 1.) Bret "the Hitman" Hart, Shawn Michaels (the Heartbreak Kid, Mr. Wrestlemania, the Showstopper), Vince McMahon Jr., Triple H and referee Earl Hebner about the Montreal Screwjob (at the WWE/WWF's 1997 Survivor Series PPV). This was when the people in the Molson Centre see the Hitman write down three letters in the sky: "WCW." the famous Vince McMahon segment the night after, on (Monday night) RAW: "Bret screwed Bret." Vince gave Bret options, but The Hitman didn't want to lose the belt, in his home country to the HBK; Hart didn't do "what was best for business." 2.) the 1980's (Memphis (Mid-South/USWA): a wrestling regional territory) vs. a Hollywood celebrity) : Jerry "the King" Lawler did the Slap (heard around the world) against "Taxi" actor/comedian Andy Kaufman, on the David Letterman talk show (NBC's "Late Night with David Letterman"; before he moved to CBS). = like when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock, straight across the face, at the Academy Awards in 2022; because Rock cracked a ("G.I. Jane") joke about Will's wife Jada Pinkett-Smith's real-life (alopecia) hair problems & Jada didn't like it.
Mostly because he keeps lying about it.
watch the match. Regal is full of it.
Funny how he didn't like the kid to the head, yet he kicked Bret's head almost clean off and says Bret should get over it
Regal 4 mins 32 secs: "He [Goldberg] says I kicked him in the head at one point" (Goldberg basically claiming Regal was too rough with him). I just find this unbelievably ironic considering Goldberg "kicked in the head" and retired Bret Hart....🤔
Same thing I was just thinking. Dude is just a muscular diva I swear.
Ok but regardless Regal does kick him plainly straight in the face
Regal should of retired greenberg
the Hitman got a Concussion because of Bill Gold/"Green"-berg's kick to his Skull. (kinda like a feud between Ryback vs. CM Punk, when both of them was in the WWE.) I thought that Bret's career was mediocre (in WCW) : at least, the Hitman got a match against Hulk Hogan (Monday Nitro: September 28, 1998); there was a feud that had started in the WWE (The Hitman had to wrestle twice at Wrestlemania 10: the first time was against his late brother, Owen Hart; then, for the second match, it was Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna (a world title match): after Hart had lost to Yokozuna, Hulk Hogan came in; he won the title from Yoko in (22 ?) seconds, after Yokozuna's manager Mr. Fuji had accidentally threw salt in Yoko's eyes, instead of Hogan's); & Sting (for the Halloween Havoc 2008 PPV: October 25, 1998).

I don’t get why people still ask him about this. It was a throwaway match, and both guys went on to have great careers.
Because Goldberg continues to accuse Regal of taking liberties in the match, thus keeping the issue alive and it gets these podcasters giddy to keep asking Regal about it. If Bill would just own up to it and admit he was green as grass and not capable of having a different kind of match versus the typical Goldberg squash there'd be nothing more to talk about and this thing would've died years ago. But, somehow it makes Bill feel better to say Regal took advantage of him.

I never understood the outrage over pairing Goldberg against someone who can actually wrestle and was willing to put him over AND willing to make him out to be more than, at best, a 4 hold bar bouncer!!!
If you watch the match and most importantly, listen to the commentary, it seemed like what they wanted to do was portray goldberg as a Competent technical wrestler. And the best way to do this is to have him go up against another technical wrestler.
Its all optics. WCW was billed as the finest wrestling. Like pure wrestling. Yeah he squashed guys but they were trying to get over that he was just better than everyone. Thats why when a actual wrestling match was asked of him he looked bad. Obviously. It makes him not seem as tough because he looked lost and like a fng. In all honesty i never blamed bill for his lack of knowledge. Wcw did not have a good training program and it showed. One thing people never give the wwe enough credit for is their training. With the territories gone there was no way for bill to get enough experience for the big leagues. Think about all the people we love from the mid to late 90’s. Most of them were either a close or over a decade of experience before they made it big. Those days in the territories allowed them to f up.
@@Gardenstategreat1225 I agree!!! I think Bischoff just saw the $$$ signs with Goldberg and rushed him too far, too fast. But, it was good for ratings.
@@Gardenstategreat1225 well it was dory funk Jr in wwe's case vs the sarge. Dorys resume far eclipses the sarge.
Both Regal and Bill have gotten far more hate then they deserve on this. They knew Bill's inexperience. To go from all 90 secs matches to 6 minutes on the fly for the 1st time is a MAJOR adjustment to someone whos green.

I always figured it was either him or Sullivan.
I can believe that, especially after what Cornette has said about him in TNA....
"You keep lining them up and I will keep knocking them down Sunshine!!!" Classic.
I think the reason people keep asking about it is because Regal outworked Goldberg and exposed him for not being ready for the push he was getting. At the time, it was indeed the longest match he had. Which i felt made him look better because he had to work a little harder to defeat a veteran. Same was true of his match with DDP at Halloween Havoc. It wasn't the typical squash match and ultimately made Goldberg look better.
If you have no idea it looks like an OK match.
@artemusprine it's a very clumsy match with a few nice moves. I remember 1 part Goldberg was just standing there like a statue
Goldberg vs DDP and vs Big Sexy at Starrcade were probably my favourite matches with him. His rivalry against Scotty Steiner also comes to mind.
Watch the match again with clear eyes. Regal looks like he’s botching everything on purpose, creating a sloppy match. Have to admit that. Talking about Goldberg freezing, when regal is stiff and not working. The match is sloppy because of regal, and it looks like he’s doing on purpose. Right decision to fire him.
@drewbrabson3678 yeah all the wrestlers with experience that blame Goldberg who was green at the time are wrong. It was actually regal who was very experienced fault.
Every wrestler that knows how to NOT hurt someone, also knows how to hurt them.
He's so over this shit but he's such a gentleman he'll keep addressing it.
The fact that this match still needs to be talked about 25 years after it happened proves Goldberg is too damn sensitive. 😂
It makes Goldberg look bad to cry about Regal intentionally trying to hurt/embarrass him versus just owing that he fucked up because he lacked experience.
You a Brett hart fan?
You need to make this face to face interview happen!!! Think of the numbers
Regal did what he was told by the agents and the producers i.e. have a competitive match with Goldberg and if you watch the actual match, it is EXACTLY that. Regal is old school, the man grew up bareknuckle fighting as a teenager, if he wanted to shoot on Goldberg, Goldberg would have been in the ICU at the hospital for ages. Regal was a highly skilled technical wrestler who knew how to work snug, but safe i.e. make his shit look as legit as possible without actually hurting someone
Goldberg on the other hand, was used to squash matches, didn't have the stamina for longer matches and wasn't very technical in the ring at all and it showed during the match. Regal did what he was told and tried his best to paint over the cracks of Goldberg's fuck ups, which of course Goldberg being the biggest fucking mark for himself ever; can't handle the fact that he was outclassed by Regal and Regal wasn't even trying to do that, he was just doing what he was told i.e. have a competitive match up.
Regal even said to Stone Cold Steve Austin on his podcast that when asked why he did what he did, he said that he was doing what he was told by the agent and that "he couldn't hit himself".
Regal was trained by Marty jones who was trained by Billy Robinson he's from the same lineage as guys like Josh Barnett, Sakuraba etc, if regal wanted to he just could have just put a guillotine choke or kimura on Bill and it would have been game/streak over.
Not so sure about that - Goldberg was into MMA long before he got into wrestling. Dude knows how to fight.
@@stevenjohnson1878 He got beat up by Jericho dude, Twice in one day. Yes Jericho was a bouncer, so he probably knows how to get down. But, C'mon.

The silly thing here is that if Regal wanted to hurt Goldberg, he could have done just that most likely. Doesn't he have a legitimate background in shoot wrestling and street fights back in the day in England and a reputation as one of the guys that is an actual pretty tough guy outside of the ring? Luckily he also seems like a pretty genuinely decent bloke that cares more about trying to have solid matches and helping other talent look good in the ring than hurting someone on live television.

Goldberg complaining about a head kick is kinda mad considering he caused at least 3 serious head/facial injuries in WCW, one of which led to early retirement.
Wow another fantastic amazing super great video info and analysis from absolutely the best channel on RUclips. I could listen to lord Steven regal for 10 hrs straight. This could is incredible to listen to. Goldberg saw very lucky he had a match that people are still talking about 25 years later. All of his other matches combined no one talks about any of them. Hornswagle had a better match any time he was in the ring . Regal is the best hope you get him on for a 5hr show. Thank you and keep the great videos coming.
The biggest problem I see with the match is apparently no one taught Goldberg how to sell/react to basic grappling moves so it looked stiff and forced. Or he just forgot how since he hadn't done anything but squash matches for a year .... If you don't use it you lose it .....
Mad respect for Regal. Took me 4 minutes to realize he wasn’t saying “that Asian”. His technical abilities and physical prowess rival that of Bret Hart. It’s not easy to match the strength of Goldberg which Regal did better than Bret. I never realized this about Regal until watching him and Goldberg.
irony of goldberg moaning about kicks to the head lol
it all makes sense. Goldberg did 30 second - 3 minute matches. if they gave them 6 minutes, they either expected a competitive match, or they expected goldberg to go full blast for 6 minutes, which would have undermined the whole point for him to mow over everyone. the agent and creative fucked up, should have scheduled it for 3 minutes but they probably had issues getting the party crowd in the back to fill every other minute.
William Regal has never changed his story about the match with Bill Goldberg. You can see Regal trying to get Goldberg to learn how to wrestle a wrestling match. Notice I said wrestling and wrestling match.
Stevie Richards needs to do his analysis on this match on his channel!
Regal is a Legend.. “I can’t hit myself” ..
Can tell this question winds him up.. I’ve never heard a different answer from Regal in over 10 years
“William Regal kicked me in the head! Waaaahhh!” said the man who *ended Bret Hart’s career* with a kick to the head. I don’t think that “irony” is a strong enough word to describe this situation, even two decades later. What’s interesting is that Regal’s trainer’s trainer was the legendary Billy Robinson, who was famous worldwide for both his own wrestling career and as a trainer for both pro wrestlers and catch wrestlers. Regal is a legit, old school “shooter” who could have physically ruined Goldberg physically and permanently if he wanted to and probably made it look easy. IMO, it says a lot about him that he’s willing to sit down with Goldberg and talk it out. After all this time, either Goldberg should meet him or let it go, never mention it again. IJS, I wonder how often *Bret Hart* complains publicly about him…and The Hitman has plenty of reason!?
I have to assume, that the agent is TT (I’ll let you do the rest). Especially if Regal spoke to them recently. Watch the match back, no liberties were taken at all and all you’ll see is Regal carrying Bill to 6 minutes. I love the humble flex as well, when he says he could have easily taken liberties if he wanted to though and Bill wouldn’t have left the ring haha. Regal really is a class act.
Putting a green Goldberg in with a worker the calibre of William Regal was a mistake. Regal wasn't going to go out there and make himself look foolish. It wouldn't surprise me if Goldberg felt intimidated by Regal and froze up because of that.
Regal was never going to draw a dime. They were preparing Goldberg to be a top guy. They were still being in the experiment stage.
Regal just got jealous and decided to do the opposite of making Goldberg look good just because of his ego. I can get controlling the match or trying to not look bad but sabotaging the match because you are loosing is unprofessional.
Goldberg with 2 moves drew more money than Regal ever did. Hardcore fans can love work rate guys to death like Bret Hart and Shawn Michael and Regal but they never drew a dime. On the other hand guys with minimum talent like Goldberg and Ultimate Warrior drew more dimes in a year than the best wrestlers of the 90s and people should digest that.

@afdcg I don't believe that for one moment. Regal is business and has put many many lesser talented workers over during his run. I don't think for one second that Regal had a issue putting Goldberg over. I do believe that Regal wasn't going to go out their and dumb down his abilities.
I totally understand this is a business and its about putting butt's in seats and making money but the sign above the door says Wrestling and you need your work horses underneath to carry the load. I don't care if your Hogan or Warrior or Cena...nobody would turn up to see them just wrestle a broomstick. A big part of the reason Bret and Shawn failed to draw is because they had a weak undercard and nobody to work with. They guys on top can't do it themselves.
You can have the best actor in the world in a movie but if the supporting cast and the storyline is shit then nobody is going to watch.

He's DAMN good.
He's the opposite of Hogan, who is a guy that if he told me the sky was blue I'd have to go check for myself.

I was under the impression that regal tried to get bill to work with him "I cant hit myself" but for whatever reason Bill froze up and so regal had to work a match around him. Thing is he actually made Bill look like he had some wrestling ability with him escaping holds etc at the end of the match. Imagine if Bill had tried that crap with someone like Shamrock? or vader? I recall a moment when Regal grabbed Bill's arm and literally wrapped it around his own head, trying to make Bill give him a headlock. It was only after hearing all the extra context that I noticed all of those little details. Without that context, I actually thought it was a pretty decent match, and it's crazy to think that such a small stigma has followed it for so long.
According to booker Kevin Sullivan the agent behind putting this match together was Mike Graham. That would explain why the agent hasn't spoken about it over the years as Graham died in 2012.
No Eric Bishoff said said he has a lot of respect for whoever the agent was.. Eric doesn’t respect Rooster Man Taylor or Mike Graham… that leaves me to think it’s Arn Anderson
People have to remember that Bill Goldberg wasn't trained well enough to protect his oponents. Goldberg unintentionely hurt quite a few wrestlers during his time in the ring with his lack of wrestling knowledge and injuring pros like Bret Hart.
Most of the wrestlers Goldberg faced would have had him in a fight too. He talks about how he would have wanted in the UFC but Bill was a football player. He'd get wipped by most with even an amateur wrestling background never mind professional fighters 🤣
Regal is obviously fed up talking about this, and I can't say I blame him.
Also that comment "if I had wanted to take liberties with Bill, Bill would not have walked out of that ring" is low-key badass lol
I believe whoever the agent was, came up with the idea to show Goldberg can work and it backfired and the agent refused to own up to it. It was a stupid idea to begin with. Goldberg had taken down monsters and former champions in less than a minute. Why would he go 6 minutes with a guy who was barely on Nitro at that point? In fairness to Bischoff I can easily believe he has zero knowledge that this was the plan and he was rightly upset.
Regal never got the recognition he truly deserved, true Champion
I would have liked to hear what (Lord/King) William/Steven Regal say about CM Punk's disrespect for him...
The only spot that was botched was the swinging neckbreaker attempt by Goldberg other than that it showed Golderg could also take on an experienced wrestler and his roleypoley leglock looked good too.
It actually did make him look good in parts 😂
Here's the list of agents (producers) for WCW in '98... Dusty Rhodes, Jim Barnett, Kevin Sullivan, Pedro Morales, Paul Orndorff, Ted Dibiase, and Terry Taylor.
Okay, this is a recent video and Regal's telling of this leads me to believe this agent is still living. So the list of people to ask this question to are Kevin Sullivan, Ted Dibiase, and Terry Taylor.
My money is on Terry Taylor
I'm leaning that it was Taylor
If it was anyone it was terry. Who of course doesn't do interviews.
"the time that I 'ad". Regals accent is wild.
The real reason was that Goldberg was a 20 second squash match guy cause like the Ultimate Warrior he had the look but not the talent and someone like William Regal who is a properly trained and seasoned wrestler who was meant to seem less them Goldberg infact showed how bad Goldberg was and that he could not wrestle like a real talent can. Regal was a pro and good at his job.
William regal looks like he would play a great role in an austin powers movie
If you look at the match and if you listen to the commentary, it seems pretty clear to me the goal was to portray Goldberg as a component technician instead of the brawler he had been. The problem is, you see the moments where goldberg just doesnt know what to do...
If you watch the match it's kind of obvious regal shuts down his offense, no sells when he can, hits him as stiff as he hits anyone, and is generally uncooperative. Plus you can watch the ref and see it went long. Because regal was in business for himself.
Regal was mad about putting over a green rookie. I like regal. I dont like goldberg. Yet regal is obviously lying.
@whitewhale9012 what did you watch? There are moments where Bill clearly is lost, doesn't make the proper move and regal has to cover for him.
You dont have to be much more than a wrestling layman to see Goldbergs facial and body language in that match. He looks unsure of himself. Almost exactly like what Regal says: a guy thats just gone blank on what to do in the middle of a match.
I dont see Regal taking liberties in that match. I see the more experienced man trying to get the match going to varying degrees of success.
"I can't 'it meself". Regal is 10 times the wrestler Goldberg ever was.
And Goldberg was 10 times more over than Regal ever was.
@@412StepUp Doesn't matter, it's about legacy and respect. Very few people have bad things to say about Regal, as he's a class act, a highly skilled ring technician who overcame serious substance addictions and serious health issues who still had a good, lengthy career and has the respect of fans and his peers such as Steve Austin, Mick Foley and Chris Jericho.
Goldberg on the other had, who may have had a more glittering wrestling career, comes across as a mark for himself, a diva, a coward who doesn't have the guts to say things to people's faces and the person who hurt a lot of people in the ring and ended the career of Bret Hart due to his incompetence.
Goldberg may have been more over as a wrestler; but Regal is definitely more over as a person in real life.
What’s weird is how cool the match turned out. Sometimes when things don’t flow as smoothly as they should it ends up looking more real.
William is very large, very intelligent, and very technical. He could have gone over and it been believable
Feels like a job for @stevierichardswrestling to review
Badass with his accent and laser focused eye contact 8:10!
Was Terry Taylor the agent?
Regal seems to look younger as years gone by! He look so much older during his “commissioner of raw” days
Goldberg complained about a kick to the head? That is ballsy
It really is bizzarre this match being some kind of thing, because it seemed to me like Goldberg was hanging with this guy who has a different style, adapting to it, and then winning decisively.
Steve Regal is a real man’s man.
Did regal make him look stupid? Fuck yes, was it regals fault not a chance, if anything Goldberg should have gone back through the curtain and said to himself, damn i know what i need to work on, communication skills during s match, how to have a match called to me, how to do proper tieups and all the variations in and out of them
Agreed!!!
Bill also said he was telling regal spots, so he was telling the veteran what to do? isn't that disrespectful in the wrestling business?
Do you rely believe that Regal would defy the bosses to do what was necessary? Doubt it!!!
@@lewisb85 Depends on how you or yyour opponent work it out. it's all bout the money anyone feels.
That match was literally one of Goldberg’s most entertaining matches.
It’s just funny William regal had more offence on Goldberg than hogan did 😂
It’s crazy how the wrestlers I hated at the time are my favorite now, and my favorites from back then are the guys I like the least now. I couldn’t stand Regal back in the day, but damn he’s a cool guy. His matches with Fit Findlay were INSANE.
Regal looks younger now than he did 20yrs ago imo
Put more weight on
If Regal was going to take liberties with Goldberg, he would have embarrassed him so much in the ring and kill any push he was getting as a beast. Same would go with Lesnar; in a shoot match, I would go with Regal.
I'd take Regal over Goldberg in a shoot--back then AND now!!! I'm not so sure about Regal and Lesnar, though. I think Brock would make make Regal pass out before he would ever give up in a match of such huge magnitude. Imagine Regal vs. Lesnar in their respective primes just going at it "mano y mano"!!!
I'd only take Rude over Regal. No Haku, Lesnar, Harley, Andre, Slater, Shamrock, Blackman, etc. None of those guys. Regal would have stretched anyone in his prime. There was a time where he subdued Sid. Sid asked Regal to teach him. Regal wouldn't do it because he didn't want a legit monster of a man taking liberties with the smaller guys in the dressing room. He put the fear of God into Vader, and dropped Hammer in a second. He's as legit as they get.
@@kazman_6899, very true. He's a nice guy if you get on his good side though.
@@donaldrhoads8880 He would easily be the sweetest out of any of those guys.
Regal would never dare try to do the same thing with Lesnar what he did to Goldberg. Lesnar is legitimate and had an impressive amateur wrestling background, Brock would legit hurt Regal if it was a shoot. Same thing for Kurt Angle, Angle and Lesnar are two guys that Regal wouldn't dare mess with.
Jobbing to Goldberg in 30 seconds didn't work for William Regal, brother!
Regal has always been my favorite heel plus he's a great actor and his son is on his way to being a great as well
Anyone know who the agent would have been on this night?
Regal is good man. Nothing but respect 😊
First time I saw the match I thought Goldberg looked good because it was actually a match. When I rewatched it I see Regal kept on giving his arm waiting for Bill to do something and when he didn’t he gave his arm again. You can see Regal was doing his best to make Regal look good but also doing what he was told to make it look compatible as well.
So if that's the case then how come William Regal never wrestled The Undertaker?
9 and a half minutes of Regal saying the same thing a thousand times.
This match to me was the best match Goldberg every wrestled. Most of the time is just a squash match. Reason i hated Goldberg so much.
If it had been Buzz Sawyer instead of William Regal Goldberg would be giving PTSD interviews like Vietnam vets.
Buzz Sawyer would've DESTROYED Goldberg in not only his make believe "wrestling training facility"--but in the ring!!! Anyone remember the tag match with Kevin Sullivan on (I think) a Clash where Buzz dived off the top rope and you could see his arm go FULL Joe Theismann and the ref did a QUICK 3 count?!?!? Sullivan (obviously) didn't see what had happened and immediately ran over to raise Sawyer's broken arm up in victory--and Sawyer just bellowed in pain on live TV (and he didn't curse/swear)!!!
Imagine if it was Shamrock(who was trained by Buzz) or Vader? both guys who had loads of experience in japan where freezing up on someone is seen as a sign of disrespect. They would have shot on bill until he co operated or match over.
@@lewisb85 I would've enjoyed seeing Shamrock against Vader!!!
@@timbarry2232 it happened in wwf and japan, they beat the living daylights out of each other. There was a worked cage/shoot style match in japan where vader went over but it was because shamrock got injured so they needed to end the match quickly.
@@lewisb85 I need to find that Japan video!!!
Lol Regal has said many times he hates being asked this all the time, yet these "journalists" continue to ask him
That's why its a good idea to make sure the guy you're pushing to the moon can work. Because eventually they'll be in a position where they have to. Nobody else has complained about Regal. He tried his best with someone who couldn't do it. Not his fault
What nonsense.
I like regal, but I cant believe anyone buys this nonsense. Regal was mad about putting over a rookie like goldberg. He did what he did.
He put over Prince Iaukea before (Prince was still green as grass at that point), and he didn't have this kind of an issue doing that.@@whitewhale9012
