I am a medicine wholesaler myself, the difference between M.R.P. and trade rate ( the price at which the manufacturer sales) is around 20%, a wholesaler will get around 10 % discount above trade rate from the manufacturer, while the wholesaler will give anywhere between 2 to 5 % to the retailer, so the profit margin for the retrailer can be from 22 to 25 % if he does not give any discount and if he give any discount say 15 % then his profit margin will get reduced accordingly and as for a wholesaler like me the average profit margin ranges from 5-6 %
That pharmacist is talking non-sense. He doesn't know much about Pharmaceutical business. Retail margin of Pharmacy business is 20% & some products like food items, insulin etc have retail margin 10-15%. Only 10-20% of products have bonus like 5+1, 9+1 etc. No way that offline medicine retailers can provide 20-25% discount for branded medicines & isn't sustainable for them. Yes, they can collect extra 4-5% from wholesalers due to competition between them but still then they can't provide discount more than 10-15%. Online pharmacy are providing such huge discounts because of direct purchase from companies. Overall companies provide them at special price due to their ability of bulk purchase. Companies provide prices deduction which is less than purchase rate for wholesalers. Overall big online pharmacy took 30-40% margin plus extra bonus for some products. So, they gain 40-50% of average margin including bonus. This is a big threat not only for brick retailers but also for wholesalers in future. I predict due to online pharmacy, lots of retailers & wholesalers shop will shut down in future because government don't care about it. I feel govt will reamain insensitive towards pharmacy market as they were insensitive to consumer market of which Amazon, flipkart etc are eating market share from offline retail store.

Kuch doctor sirf medicine likh dete hai. Lekin dose ni batate. Ha doctor prescription par mention krte hai. Lekin wo sirf ek pharmacist hi samahj sakta hai. To i think ek customer ko face 2 face deal krna chaiye pharmacist ke saath. Or ethical medicines pe 10 se 15% hi margin hota hai. Not 20 or 30%.
