  • Hello!! Today, I’d like to ask for your assistance in how I can properly, effectively discuss feminism (both in the punk movement and the world at large) from my position both as a youtuber and as someone raised in the male privilege position.
    Thanks for all your help.
Sorry the intro is gone. I lost the video clip with the channel intro. I still gotta make a new one but I didn’t wanna delay uploading this.

I think talking about feminism would be amazing and I'm so glad you made this video! I think the best thing to do is just that to support women feminists and uplift their voices, just making sure to not speak over them! Other than that, I actually think men talking about their feminism is super important, because a lot of men don't understand feminism, or think it's some evil thing meant to wipe out men. Men telling men that feminism is good, and benefits men as well is so important, thank you so much for doing this!

    Ok! i have acouple ideas,
    1. you could have feminist guests on to talk about an issue in feminism that they feel are important, and you could talk with them as well and just have an honest conversation about the issue and what you all think could be done
    2. i would read up on intersectional feminism ( assuming you havent already) as it is important to note that although it is shameful, feminism within the punk and riot grrrrl movement was predominately white and catered to cis white females.
    3. i think the request system would be a good idea as it could be a nice way to introduce the topic to the channel.
    4. im sure you also have fem and queer fem friends, im sure theyd be willing to help out as well!
i honestly think that since youve given enough care to actually ask what we think, your going to do a good job, you seem like youd think about things from other peoples perspectives and not just your own. we all make mistakes, and if your willing and read yo own up when they happen and educate yourself. i think that this would be an interesting addition to your channel\
if anyone wants to add to my list i would also love others ideas :)

Hello! Female-raised person here, I feel like as long as you acknowledge your male-raised privilege, which you have, it's not an issue for you to talk about feminism at all - personally I'm interested to hear about feminism from a male-raised person's perspective because it's not something I've really heard before, I think it could be really good to talk about your experience of feminism/sexism and being around feminism/sexism from your point of view :)

@@tullus.aufidius yeah I totally could've used those terms (and I do on a fairly regular basis) but I guess I wanted to emphasise that I was referring to people who spent a large chunk of their life, like at least up to age 18, acting and being treated as male/female, as opposed to, for example, a trans person who came out aged 12 and was treated as their "chosen" gender after that time :)

@@Olly__Zines-By-Blade I would still argue that at 12 you've had a significant experience as agab raised person, but I understand your point. I wasn't sure if you knew those terms so that's why I commented. Thanks for clearing that up tho!

You are calling out your possible inherent bias already. As long as you’re sincere I reckon you should talk about feminism. I did some art for a band from Melbourne called GASH (Girls Against Sexist Hype) back in the day. I manifest as a man, and it’s all cool. The band loved it and used the art on flyers and a single. I believe the key is being genuine… and you are!

Yeah, I think it's really important for men to talk about feminism. No matter how powerful women can be, the feminist movement would be unable to progress if the other half of the population stood either against them or silently

i think what you’re doing is brilliant, and wanting to talk about this is really great cause it’s so important that it’s not just fem presenting people who talk about feminism but also masc presenting. it’s bullshit but men are always gonna be more likely to listen to other men when having discussions on different social/political issues and so having more masc people within the movement, spreading the word and raising awareness is so important.
i’d suggest doing a lot of research on this, to firstly unlearn you own biases you have from being raised as a man (don’t feel bad about this btw, it’s not something that can be helped but what is important is how you use the privilege you have) and also to try and find fem/minority voices who you can uplift and amplify voices so you don’t fall into the trap of speaking over those that are effected by these types of issues.
the most important thing i think is intersectionality. TERFS fucking suck and should not have any platform to speak. make sure you’re not just focusing on how misogyny effects white cis women, but also WOC, queer fems, trans women, and anyone else who could be a victim of misogyny.
what you’re wanting to do is awesome and i’m sure you’re gonna do something great with all this :)

The fact that you even made this video is already a good start tbh. Even though im nb im female presenting so ive definitely been on the receiving side of some not so great things from other members of society. I think getting some of your female/female presenting (fp) friends on the channel would be great so theres some dialogue and you can add to what they say from a male presenting feminists pov. There are a few topics that you could do alone but obviously tread lightly and do your own research and talk to female presenting people first. For example maybe something about your experience with alpha male culture and how its damaging and dehumanizing to fp people. You could also talk about how gross the infantilization of fp people is from a male presenting pov. Honestly as long as you incorporate fp people in the making of your videos and run stuff by them, also making sure anything you say is relevant to being male presenting person and doesnt overstep. Its important for your type of perspective to be talked about in a way that puts it out into the open that youre against the type of behavior that comes from a massive amount of other people that look like you and that its not okay. Also pointing people in the direction of fp peoples channels would be good too, make sure youre speaking with them not over them. Mina Le has some good feminist videos as an example

sorry this is very off topic, i’ve recently started attending punk shows as a trans guy, do you think it would be safe for me to use the mens bathrooms? like i don’t pass as a guy that well so it’s pretty obvious i’m trans, i’m not sure how accepting some punks are about that

It may also help to be actively advocating to understand in depth our experiences and what women go through. Take a moment to think about local organizations that you can volunteer for or things that you are interested in helping in like the various protests for the Bills against Reproductive Rights. If you haven’t been actively involved, you’re acting more as a bystander to the sidelines rather than someone willing to fight or protect femme presenting people. The best form of self education is to get involved with how it effects your community especially

Giving afab people and trans women a platform would be great! Asking them questions about feminism and their struggles/experiences having lived or currently living as women in this society we live in! I think this would be the best route coming from someone who's afab.

I think it could be super interesting to see you document your process of learning more on feminism. Then you can educate yourself while educating your viewers. I also want to point out that it's vital to point out the flaws in feminism, specifically white feminism. But yeah, I don't have a problem with you talking about feminism. I personally would like to learn more about how women are treated in the punk movement and how the punk movements history has excluded women at times.

I'd definitely suggest talking about intersectionality in feminism. So often women of color, trans women and femme-presenting non binary people are excluded in feminist discussions and spaces and I think combating that, especially as a male-presenting person, is very important.

Howdee, I was just reading the lyrics to “Pushed Aside Again (Taas Sivussa)” by Kohti Tuhoa. It’s a song about the experience of being a female in the hardcore scene. It struck me that you could use it, or a song like it as a jump off point to start your discussion?

You should discuss feminism the way you see it
Just because you are male presenting doesnt mean you cant have a voice and say what you think
You could use the way others may view male presenting to your advantage
I dont see many male presenting stand for feminism openly and it is important to me

Make sure you uplift female activist voices. It's good to give your take but sourcing it from other male speakers is not what I would ever do, unless you are trying to address how feminism impacts you and your perspective of it as a man.
