In the winter of 1972-73 My wife and small 2 year old daughter and I took our 26 ft. Westerly Centaur from La Harve to Sete France. It took us 4 months. It was very cold and very foggy. Visibility was very limited. Sometimes we could only see the the bow running lights. Days were short and the locks were only worked during day light hours. Many times the Keepers let us tie up in the locks for the night. They were special people.
@@sailingrubyrose Well I am 78 years old now so I don't think so, but I thought at the time that if I was to do it again it would be in a 30 ft. cabin cruiser with central heating. Of course I would have some problems with some of the bridges over the canals. At the time it was the cheapest way to travel in Europe...less than 5 Dollars a day.
My parents spent 5 weeks boating through the locks in southern France back in the late 80's. My dad took plenty of color slides that I have seen but watching your trip has given me an insight into the real experience. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us...
@@sailingrubyrose They were experienced lake and ocean sailors here in the US and they enjoyed the trip but they traveled with another couple that rushed through everything which spoiled some of their fun. It was their first visit to France and Europe and they wanted to take it all in.
If only there was a love button rather than just a like button. Absolutely loving seeing this part of your adventure. Such a beautiful part of the world and you present it so well. I'm also not enjoying being fully caught up with your episodes as now I'm having to wait a week rather than binge watch. Boooo. Oh well, c'est la vie. Au reviour for now.
I'm pretty impressed that you guys can manage the logistics and all the stress of getting Ruby Rose through these locks without wrecking her, and also plan great footage for us. That time lapse through the two double locks at 13:58 was awesome!!! Also, I feel like the basil plant has become enough of a fixture that it needs a name.
I don't know why , but your channel is my favourite now . I realy like other sailing channels , but i'm getting tired of watching scuba diving shots , people doing laundries , listening to wise sentences , cooking veggies e.t.c . . Your aura is great ! I really like how you two communicate to each other , and your sense of humor ! Oh and yes , your videos are really showing what is all about ! Sailing , safety , having fun and so on .... Cheers !
I know why. They're interesting, engaging and seem like genuinely nice people. People you'd love to have as friends and scoop a few sherberts with of an evening.
Finally caught up on all the episodes and joined as a Patron. You two offer a different experience and vibe than the other channels, who I also enjoy. And this trip through the canal is opening up a world/adventure I didn’t even know existed. So impressed by your bravery, spirit, and film making skills. Onward!
Ah Trebes! Last September, while mooring our 60' rental canal boat to the shore just downstream from the locks, the mallet/lump hammer used for hammering in the provided mooring stakes decided to let loose its 5 kilo head into the air on the upswing! I just covered my head with my hands and wished for the best as I waited for the mass of metal to return to earth.
These are the most interesting sailing/cruising videos out these days, i watch them each several times so I can full absorb the fascinating info ans scenery. Thank you so much for your work Nick and Teresa
This is great viewing, that area of France is beautiful. You must have your heart in your mouth at times taking your precious yacht on the canals. Having done a bit of canal boating in the UK - canal boats are made to be banged around a little!
If time permits please show more of the country side and towns you are going through, even if videos are few minutes longer. Love your trip and stories!
"We can relax now we're through the lock, ahhhhh... honey, heads up, another lock just ahead." I know you guys truly found time to enjoy that beautiful scenery between the locks!! 🙏 Cheers from Canada.
Love this video. Love them all though. You have such a knack for bringing us into your emotions while taking the boat along but not so much that its painful to watch. Seems you two have not only figured out the locks but also how to work as a team without too much friction.
Not sure my wife and I will ever get to your side of the pond, but it sure looks amazing motoring through the canal system. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
It's not that your mast is too long, it's that your boat is too short ;) Can't wait to see the rest of the tour. Say, any chance you will be doing some of the English river canals? I know some are big enough for barges. The true narrow canals I don't think you can navigate, but the big deep river ones shouldn't be an issue.
This adventure has been very interesting. Seems to be a lot of work going through the locks. Don’t know if I would attempt it after watching you. Have you had any major scrapes or damage to your boat? I’m really enjoying this. Thanks Nick & Terysa. Stay safe.
Well done guys. I think you passed the boat I hired from Minervois Cruisers about ten years ago. Those locks are a weird shape. I now have a narrowboat and much prefer the more sensible rectangular locks on the British canals. You don’t see many sailboats though!
Ah, cool, something to watch when I get to my Airbnb...Much later edit - like, a week later....got a bit busy so only got to watch once I returned home. Fantastic! You two are lovely people having a great adventure and I appreciate you sharing it with us. And haven't you acquitted yourselves very well with all the line handling and maneuvering through the locks?! Well done! It looks like a spectacular voyage and keep on having the best fun! Another great video, many thanks!
Ah yes, the famous French lunch break at the lock! Nothing to do but learn to live with it. The water gushing reminded me of a time when while approaching a lock with our shallow draft canal boat. An oncoming boat was being lowered so the water was gushing out, we pulled over to the side, but after the initial rush of water came by we found ourselves aground in what shouldn't have been that shallow. But it was and took some time to power off the bottom. Also, we were a little too far from shore to jump with a line so that idea was out, and no other boats were in line at the end of the day. Funny stuff. Thanks for the great and interesting quality of your videos.
French Canal de Bourgogne. We were headed between St Remy to Veneray Les Laumes. It is a less utilized canal as we only saw maybe one boat a day and even a wrecked abandoned ancient un-propelled barge. Rarely saw a road until a village popped up, and train would occasionally pass too far to hear. Lock houses still had shell holes from WWII and this was in the 1990's.
Love watching your trip through France. Did a week on the Thames on a rented 60ft barge. Really LOVED it! Wife and I already decided when we are too old to sail, we’re going to get a barge and try France.
I love Carcasonne. I was there 3 years ago, but traveling by motorcycle. I also had the joy of spending time in the Pyrenees. Great area. Its good to travel by different means of transport. The canal looks really good.
LOL, 2:39 the black bean. France is a bit lower on my bucket list, but the lessons here will doubtless apply to all canals. Some of the best pat $ I spend. Cheers!
Wow, looks like a busy time traversing the canal system, definitely seems to be a 3 person task to simplify things. Good thing your doing it now though, those locks look way to narrow to fit the 20 foot plus beam of a catamaran if you do eventually go the cat route. Great video as always, love your work.
We can answer that easily- absolutely yes!! Already planning our next foray into the European waterways although might not happen for a while! It was well worth the effort.
By the time you are done with all the locks you will have a completely new way of going thru them. One thing I like about you two is your both goofballs always ready to laugh. : )peace
No doubt about that!! Unfortunately our forecabin was full of our sails and radar and spreaders everything else that is part of our rig, or attached to it! So we had nowhere for visitors to sleep.

Not that you were taking samples, but what would be your opinion of the canal water? Brown from sediment or possibly somewhat polluted? Thanks.
Some parts of the midi are a bit grim. But elsewhere it’s just sediment. Lots of fish in there
I am curious. Once you are tied up in a lock, about how long does it take to fill. Ten minutes, 1/2 hour or longer?
Normally 10 minutes or so
