- Chris and Andy travel to France and sail the Camargue and Canal du Midi for a week with Locaboat. We sail from Lattes on a Penichette 950E to the Loca Boat marina at Argens Minervois. We travel along the Canal du Rhône à Sète and Canal du Midi, stopping at Palavas les Flots, Meze, Cap d’Agde, Béziers, Capestang and Le Somail. We take on the Etang de Thau, cross the aqueduct at Béziers, climb the staircase locks at Fonséranes and pass through the Tunnel du Malpas.
A special thanks to brother in laws Bill Ott and Dale Ronsin who travelled along with us on this trip
This video is NOT sponsored.
Thank you to Mirko from Potjer.ch for providing the drone footage of the Fonséranes lock flight.

French canals vs Dutch? Which trip was your favorite and why? Good videos! Thanks! Also what time of year were your trips??
@@donhummel6630 wow, good question but difficult to answer. Both places are really great. We’ve done two trips around the Netherlands now and one on the Canal du Midi, France. To be honest, I love them both and they were very different. We did different places each time in the Netherlands, both trips there were around June time, the French trip we did in September which meant shorter days. In the Netherlands, you can spend a long time waiting for bridges to open, but then the same applies to locks in France. I’d say the Canal du Midi was more picturesque and varied, there were many very nice places to stop. In the Netherlands, we tended to stop in towns and cities but I love the Netherlands. I would go back to either of them again. I expect we will go back and do some more in France at some stage. As a recommendation, I don’t think you would be disappointed with either. Do let us know what you decide though.
@@apntv We have done a two bike tours in the Netherlands and keep finding ourselves wanting to go back. We haven't seen much of France at all. Maybe we need to go somewhere new? Either way planning a canal trip for next Spring. Thanks for your input!
@@donhummel6630 awesome, I’m sure you will enjoy either, I look forward to hearing how it goes :-)
Yes i would like to do it
I live on the canal du midi @Colombiers. I've paddled from the Atlantic to Italy in my kayak. In my cruiser I've been out to Royan and back to Colombiers,. I've got about 1500 locks experience throughout frame and Belgium. Your video is good and I can imagine you'll not forget your trip for a long time.
Awesome, you’ve certainly covered some distance. Yes we really enjoyed this one, I suspect we will come back and do some more sometime. :-)
I was there in 2014 and they were taking out most of the Plane trees on the banks due to a blight. Good to see so many new trees planted in this video. The Midi is really a special place.
Yes we did pass lots of young trees, I hadn’t realised they had to cut them down, so good to see they were replanted. It was a great trip, it’s a shame we didn’t have slightly better weather the day we went through The Avenue, I guess that looks spectacular in the sunlight. :)
I did this journey 22 years ago, and it was one of my best holiday trips ever! Thank you for this great video! This created so much memories🥰..we spent 14 days on the canal right in april at the begin of the holiday season. That was a good descision because it's not so crowded and we had rain and wind too but we loved it!
Thanks for uploading!!
Thank you for your lovely comments and we are very pleased that it brought back good memories for you. We love to do these videos to remind ourselves of these trips. I wonder how much it has changed in 22 years?
Great job guys one of the best Canal Du Midi vids we have seen. Nice steady camerawork and good scenery. BUT !!! what happened to the women on board ???. we never saw them at all. Cheers Max. Australia.
Doesn"t matter who needs women anyway....
Awww thank you Max. Actually there weren’t any women, on either boat. We were just us two and a moose :-)
a really great work with many informations for someone who is looking for informations about canal du midi holidays with the boat
We've spent 7 months on the canals of France and the UK and hired our boat from Locaboat in Argens also. We took 4 weeks to do the entire length from the Etang almost to Bordeaux. Of all the canals I've done, the Midi/Lateral route was my least favorite. The food and scenery in the Burgundy is much more appealing. This video was fun to watch as it brought back memories.
YOu have inspired me guys - I think I will do it as well.
That’s really cool, we had a great time. Do come back and let us know how you get on.
We are going on a similar trip next week - starting from Lattes. But we will have the boat (a 1180fb) for 2 weeks and are planing to cross the Etang de Thau in both directions (to the Canal du midi and back) and this is how I came across your video. We have been on the Canal du Midi for a week twice - starting in Argens and back. We went just to Vias - short before Adge and never crossed the Etang. Now we hopefully will. The times before we also had a Penichette Evolution - a great boat and so easy to handle. The lightly larger P 1180 will not have both electric busters - just one in front.
Your video was very helpful getting an idea about crossing the Etang and the whole journy.
But what stunned me most was - the last trip we made was beginning of October 2022 in Argens. And we went on the Roubia - so we took the same boat just right after you left. What a coincidence.
Thank you for your Video
Ulli
That’s awesome, thank you for the reply. I’m sure you’re going to have a great trip by the sounds of it. I hope it doesn’t get too windy on the Etang. :-) Bill and Dale were on Roubia, that is a coincidence, I’ll pass that onto them as we are still in touch. We went back to Holland this year in June and had another 950e called Amsterdam, the previous year we had the one called Alphen, which features in the Netherlands video. The day we returned to base we met Alphen coming out of the marina with a family who told us that the only reason they were there is because they had watched our video from the year before. :-)
Watched this last night with the wife. She wants to go to France now!
Hehehe yeah, it was nice. :-)
Enjoyed watching and it has made me think about making the trip
Awesome, it was a fun week. We are going back to the Netherlands to do some more next year. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
Really enjoyed the vid, thanks! A nice gentle story, told well. Loved the doucement place of your holiday.
Thanks Jeff, are you going there or have you been already?
@@apntv Both actually. Used to have a boat down on the Midi for a few years earlier in the century. Such a relaxing pace of life once you learne to slow down. I thought you guys nailed it. Keep up the good work!
@@jeffieh thanks very much. :-)
Lovely, informative video. We're doing the same route in early May of '23. Thanks for sharing!
Great, thanks. Do come back and let us know how you got on, I’m sure you will have a great time. :-)
Very enjoyable video. About 20 years ago I cycled the Canal de Garonne and Canal du Midi - so from the Atlantic to the Med. So interesting to see the route from the water. It is a beautiful area of France.
Wow, that sounds like quite a trip by bicycle. Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed it :-)
Fenders dragging in the water costs you lots in speed and fuel.
Otherwise good video.
Now on my bucket list.
Yeah, they ask you to leave them tied on to the hire boats and to be honest, I think a lot of hire boaters do need them :-) We saw a few people crush the fenders beyond repair. Unlike most, the Penichette 950e boats that we hire are all steel and aren’t so likely to break :-) We have done quite a bit of sailing and that’s a real no no. I hope you get to take off your bucket list, it’s a great adventure :-)
a extremly nice video with plenty of details for someone that is looking for his boat-holiday, realy a great work!
Thanks Mirko and thanks again for the drone clip.
Hi guys, great video. What time of the year did you go? We were just wondering if we can avoid the wind.
Hiya, sure we went the last week of September, it avoided the very hot and busy periods but instead I guess we got the wind and mosquitos. We did Netherlands in June, much better weather but still had some mosquitos :-)
@@apntv 😂 yeh mosquitos and spiders were in abundance for us.
@@ZaleAway oh yeah, the spiders :-)
Fun
Wow! Thank you for this wonderful "documentary", we're leaving in three weeks for the Canal du Midi between Negra and Lattes and we really appreciate all the information in your video. What time of year were you there? It looks pretty cold? And finally, how does the water supply work?
Thank you, we are really glad if you found it useful. We went last September, so much the same sort of time, maybe a week or so after you so hopefully the weather will still be great. It wasn’t bad only one or two days at the end that were a bit overcast and a few light, short showers in the whole week. Just a bit windy in the middle :-) water, you can fill your tank in most marinas where you decide to moor up, we stayed in a couple of places that weren’t marinas and didn’t cost anything to stay, and we were certainly fine for a couple of days without topping up. Rule of thumb top up whenever you can, and if you end up staying on the riverbank you should be fine. In France, you have a hose on board to connect to the taps.
@@apntv Thank you, it's really appreciated
That was a great video. Well done. We are planning a canal boat holiday on the same route, at the end of August. Hope it will not be extremely hot. Took note of all the places that you stopped at along the canal. We are checking if we can have a 4-night boat hire one-way; if not, we will go for a week. Were there any mooring places for the night that you would change if there's ever a next time?
Thanks, we are really pleased it was helpful. Obviously we missed out on Aigues Morte the first night, which would have been nice to visit. I don’t think you can go wrong wherever you stay, everywhere has it’s good and bad points. It’s worth looking up some of the places on the Etang de Thau for the sort of things you like, Bouzigues was very popular for shellfish, Marseillan for a particular drink. We enjoyed Meze but we were somewhat constrained by daylight that day and you will have a bit more in August that means you could probably go onto it. Just chatted to Chris and I think if we were to drop anywhere, maybe it would be Capestang, although it was certainly pleasant enough. Beziers, funny enough, wasn’t as good as we had hoped but strategically it was a good place to moor up overnight to be ready for the lock flight first thing in the morning. I think Los Somail was a real bonus as it wasn’t on our original route but was probably the one we enjoyed the most. Have fun wherever you choose and let us know how you get on. Maybe it could be the first video on your channel :-)
@@apntv Thanks. You got me hooked on again on canal boating. So far I did the Norfolk Broads in England and the Llangollen Canal in Wales. If you had to choose one between Canal Du Midi, and the one in the Netherlands, which would it be?
@@eaglet2000 we are actually going back to the Netherlands this summer but I suspect we will also do some more of the French canals too. :-). I have a couple of really old UK canal videos buried in the Sailing and Cruising playlist on my channel going back to about 2008.
@@apntv Waiting for your Netherlands video. My family think that we should go to the Netherlands Canal this year.
