  • A Labour MP has hit out at the television chef Jamie Oliver after finding a packet of jerk rice sold under his brand, which doesn't contain all its essential ingredients. Dawn Butler, whose parents are from Jamaica, said this 'appropriation' needs to stop. Jamaica-born chef and entrepreneur, Levi Roots, and the chef and restaurateur, Bea Vo, respond.

I would rather they cover This then yet again going after Harry and Megan. Speaking of which I still say all the time they were discussing the former duke and duchess they should have been Going after Prince Andrew. Considering he was actually accused of a crime and as far as I know neither Scotland Yard nor Interpol seriously investigated. Which should’ve raised a serious question as to whether or not the royal family is above the law.

Dual971 you wouldn’t be because the definition of cultural appropriation is the majority culture taking from the minority culture. Not the other way around. Logically it’s only an issue one way. If colonialism had been done by Africans and they were the majority culture - any effort by them to take from whites would then be appropriation. I hope that helps.

Culture is something that's very important and dear to people. Most of the West Indian food is not influenced by India.
When the Indians were brought to the Caribbean in the 1850’s they brought curry and roti dish. Not much more than that.
Everything else were brought over African, China, Syria, and everyone one else who were servants. A lot of the ingredients already existed in the Caribbean when the Taino and Carib were here already before being slaughtered.
Everything in the Caribbean was brought together and what makes us unique is how we have come together and kept everything the same and appreciate it as one people.

It's microwaveable rice, it looks disgusting and probably tastes disgusting, the cooked rice sitting in the bag with liquid for weeks, absolutely digusting. Is it wrong for Ainsley to sell a Kafta making kit, he is not middle eastern and his spice blend included sugar , wheat and milk, none of which is required for kafta's. This is a marketing thing for that chef's brand, levi does it, jamie does it, ainsley does it, they all do it, the only reason this is becoming a problem is jealousy, people wishing they got in their first with the idea, for an MP to go on a rice crusade on tv stations while the UK is gripped in a knife, gun and acid attack epidemic that greatly affects black youth is absolutely shameful, do you think that the last thought of black youth who are dying from being stabbed or shot is 'damn jamie oliver and his cultural appropriation rice'

With that said, Dawn Butler needs to be worrying about the state of the borough she's "supposedly" running. Met her last year at Notting Hill Carnival and by the brief conversation we had she immediately struck me as someone who is craving attention and fame.

The scandal here isn't cultural appropriation (or jealousy from rival 'personality', privileged, highly paid marketing entrpreneurs) it's TV CHEFS lending their names to factory made, branded processed foods, sauces and ready meal products! Having spent decades crusading for proper food and real cooking skills albeit charging astronomical prices in his ailing restaurant chains, Jamie Oliver is finding new ways to cash in on the public's laziness after the TV chefs turned cooking into a spectator sport! More free publicity for his brand of course
    Yaaaawn

“appropriation” is another word for theft and to suggest the theft of a culture assumes it is owned which it isn’t therefore it’s a non debate. This debacle tells you more about the intellectual weakness of the particular MP who started this idiotic debate and the people who also piggybacked this debate for their own gain. This country is in turmoil right now and I would expect all politicians to be working flat out on resolving the pressing matters not looking for issues to be triggered by and then go to the press with fake outrage. If the growth in Food banks, the Brexit process, increase in London knife killings and acid attacks isn’t enough to keep this MP busy she needs to be voted out because she clearly has to much time on her hands.

There is no such thing as cultural appropriation but there is cultural appreciation. Such argument is concocted and is a by-product of ill-informed people either driven by pure maliciousness or utter ignorance.
Media time is given to this stupid topic - no one cares to discuss the fact Monsanto has copyrighted Basmati rice from India, a global staple just because they have modified the genetic make up of the rice to withstand drought but the seeds can never reused again, so they could make more monies.
The poor farmers are forever indebted to a global company thus has resulted with farmers' suicide to double in the last two decades but their lives and struggles do not matter.
For more information please Google Vandana Shiva and learn, it's more better than wasting your time on this concocted debate.
