I follow your advice on this subject and I won’t do it any other way. The mini dsp is a God send and running 6 subs it is a must. This subject came up today in an online forum today and myself and another member referenced your other videos to answer a question. I’ll be sharing this one as well. As always, thanks for all of your valuable information. We appreciate you guys.👍🏾👍🏾
Hey Gene, I think a video on house curves and the 20-30 dB slope associated with them across the audio band. This can be confusing and cause people to attempt flat EQ responses. Also, an explanation of subtractive rather than additive EQ is always critical to understanding proper implementation and to avoid creating distortion. Its basic but rarely addressed technically. Keep up the great work!
Hey guys, love the new look, effects and audio, great stuff! Of course your content is always on point and informative. You guys are the 'go to' reference for Home theatre Audio as far as I'm concerned. I've got a humble 5.2.2 system, Polk Signature S55, S15, S30, 2 10" Polk subs and Height channels- all polk. Running a Marantz SR5012, adding a Emotiva Basx A300 shortly. My setup is simple, all speakers set to 80Hz Crossover, both subs are at the front stage at left and right of the main towers, left sub runs at lower gain (corner loading), right sub runs higher gain. Ps. AVR sub gain at -3.5. Fully concrete structure, so the bass is powerful, so much so I run the gain at around 35% and believe me everyone is very impressed! Beauty of well designed, concrete, Caribbean architecture I suppose. I've been asked by some to help them install their theatre systems, so will take your advice and get the meters and measuring devices to help my installs to be as good as dumb luck and watching the Audioholics channel has made my setup. Thanks Guys and keep up the awesomeness!
I just moved so I haven't been able to set up everything but at my old place my setup was as follows: 2 SVS PB-2000's and 2 Behringer 1200D subwoofers place nearfield for enhanced tactile bass. I was running my sub out from the AVR to a MiniDSP 2x4 HD to handle time alignment and levels. I also had two corner bass traps and 6 2" acoustic panels with a 2" air gap around the room. It was a relatively small room, something like 14x20 or so, but it was open to the kitchen area so it wasn't completely sealed. For the space I was working with, it sounded pretty awesome if I do say so myself.
I recently turned audyssey off and used the GEQ setting on my denon x4200w and my speakers opened out so much more detail and the subs are not as boomy as before. Generally, I just use addussey for trim levels and distances even though I still tweak them a bit.
Currently have 2 Paradigm Defiance x10 subs .. positioned at about 1/3 (or 2/5th) the side walls (both sides) managed largely by the Denon receiver (for now) .. Some delay enabled and cross over points for balance. These 2 things really kick my ass in a small room. Incredible output for relatively small footprint. I will be using that REW measurements to fine tune.. and soon to have Anthem receiver / ARC system for the 11.2 ATMOS later this year. Thanks for all the info and "tips" .. lol

Good information for someone like me, just starting. Right now I’m with a 3.0, looking into a subwoofer 🔊. Right now it’s just in the living room. Looking into a SVS or Elac Sub pair.
Hello guys, I've been following you guys for a while and generally I agree with you on many things however My payscale and equipment are not quite the levels of what you use. I own a Pioneer Elite SC-07 Receiver (B&O Icepower amplifiers) with only 1 subwoofer output, Definitive Procinema 600 System and 2 Klipsch Synergy sub 12 subwoofers(I use a splitter to feed both. I have both subs2 feet from my front wall and flanking my television and coming off of the single subwoofer output of my SC-07The MCACC Pro works very well and results in pretty accurate calibration. I use the advanced capabilities which allow for more granular calibration of the system's phase. I may look into a minidsp in the future but my receiver corrects the subwoofer channel along with the others with EQ, delay, reverberation correction, full bandwidth standing wave and phase compensation.

Acoustic treatment, especially bass absorbers(traps), can clean up and sweeten bass in a home theater. If done correctly, acoustic treatment will give you much better bass. Even when it's done incorrectly, acoustic treatment will give you much better bass. Combined with electronic room correction, it is sweet. I'm using a DAW for my home audio. Sonarworks also does time correction for off-center listening positions. Some acoustical treatments I use are: Acoustic Fields, GSK, and RealTraps. I also use recycled blue jean fibers which have been processed and formed into insulation bats similar to glass or mineral wool.
Thank you for you time! What about connecting the subwoofer input to speakers output on the amp, or even on the speakers bindingposts if they support it? If using multiple subwoofers, go for smaller diameter speaker subs ?
Yes comes with calibration file and link to REW. Where is Hugo ? I have been watching your videos for over 2 years. Thank you . I trust your expertise. How many years of college did you do? What was your degree for ?
Are you able to put side filing subs 2-4 feet away from the corner against the wall, if not, what is the ideal location for dual side fighting subs, as far as myself being a novice your videos are massive help, so you always get a big thumbs up for me.
Hi Gene, Question: I want the best sound from my system. I looked up downloading REW Free Software and am willing to buy a USB microphone, in addition to the one that came with my Marantz 8012 Audisy. What makes the REW Software better then the one that comes with the Marantz? Will you do a demonstration on how that works? PLEASE.
Audyssey is a calibration system. It doesn't actually let you measure your room to see what's going on. Run Audyssey calibration, then measure with REW before and after at the listening area. Yes I will be doing more videos on this topic soon.
Hey Gene, your shirt is the same color as Kirk's. I have a Dayton EMM-6 mic and a Behringer XENYX Mic Preamp as recommended by I think the REW people as a good low-cost way to go. The mic is calibrated, but that is only to allow for flat-response correction, there's no way to calibrate it for sound levels. With the pre-amp having 2 different gain controls, you have to be careful when calibrating for levels--if you change the gain from what it was at calibration, you shift the levels. I don't think absolute level is all that important to get real accurate since we're testing frequency response irregularities that are likely the same over a fairly wide volume range. I do a sort of calibration using a phone and/or tablet with a different calibrated Dayton mic with a few different sound test apps. Would you say that's a reasonable compromise since I don't have a calibrated sound level meter?
Indeed about the shirt. Actually, the Dayton USB Mic I was referring too has a built,in preamp so SPL is accurate with the Cal file. Yes what you are doing is reasonable. If you want to ensure accuracy, use a calibrated SPL meter as a reference.
I tried to follow your guide lines gene but honestly I sometimes don’t have time or patience. I have 2 Dayton ultimax subs in a sealed box powered by berhinher nx3000d from parts express and a denon 63000. Not sure if I wanna pay someone to calibrate or buy a mic and use the REW program but I’m worried it might be over my head even with clear direction.
I'll be rebuilding my basement theater in a few months after structural repairs to the building. The upside is that I'm getting a bigger screen area and a higher ceiling (hello overhead speakers!), and thus a new AVR that supports Atmos and DTS:X, which also has dual independently-calibrated subwoofer outputs. I'm planning on putting one in the front left corner of the room and one in the right rear corner. (Seating is in the middle of the room.)The new AVR has settings for Left and Right subs or Front and Back subs - which of those settings should I use? PS One of the subs is downward-firing and one is forward-firing. Which sub should I put in the front of the room and which in the back?
I had always placed my single sub in the only “real” useable corner of my room. Then I got a usb measurement mic and room EQ wizard. I measured the sub in the corner and several other possible locations. Turns out that corner placement’s measurement was really bad! The front wall was way better 👌🏼
Great tip.... of bass management! Love the outtakes LMAO. I'm setting up my room (15'x22'x9') for a 7.?.2 system with height front height channels. Do you have any wisdom on using LFE and bi-amping the 8 x 15" woofers in my Legacy Whispers? My priority is not sacrificing fidelity for listening to music and the effect that LFE crossover and processing has when playing stereo source material in the 2ch, 7ch stereo modes or Dolby rather than Direct. Currently it performs nicely for both music and movie viewing. In your opinion would this be a compromise to fidelity or an enhancement that is properly tunable for linearity? I use a separate DAC for front channels for audiophile listening but enjoy using the room cal and multi-channel DSP options offered. I would use an Adcom 555 for subs and Dynaco Mk3's for mids/tweeters. I am adding an additional 15" sub for bass management (placement TBD). I stopped the bi-annual $2500 upgrade of AVR to keep current and use my own amplification for Front and center channels (Legacy Audio they are 15 yr old models) and use the AVR for the processor and to amplify surround channels. Options are limited with split sub out of my Yamaha TSR-7810. I will be trying an older miniDSP nano for bass management next. The Whispers add the height dimension but not separate variable channels. I am a long time REW user. Do you perform REW measurements or auto EQ at other than seated height to address standing listening positions and the floor ceiling mode? Listen well
Hi Gene, thank you for your valuable advice. I am using an Yamaha RXA 2070 and duo Yamaha subwoofer NS-SW 700. I have run YAPO EQ set up. Just wanted to know under layout setting for subwoofer what is the listen effect different between Left+Right versus Front+Rear. Btw current set up is Left+Right and both subwoofer distance is around 3.8m away from my listening position. Thanks again and look forward for your feedback. Cheers!
Hi, I went through your advises and also combined them with other info you published in other video. I have your same Yamaha 5100 and I found something which surprised me, setting the speaker to small and diverting to the sub frequencies to, let's say 80 Hz, does not divert at all, it just lets the Yamaha duplicating the signal to the sub till that frequency (similar response curve, just higher volume). Found this out using REW and purchasing the mike for using it properly (to your advise point n. 1 and 2 :)) ) .Have you noticed the same behavior?
Audioholics Thanks....Saving for a Denon... $1500 range. I had some issues with my Yamaha. I can’t go that route again! Also thanks for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot from them!!! :^)
I have a pioneer 5.1 av reciever and using oldschool audio research speakers as a 2ch and its awsome and then i have a phillips hometheather in a box and the subwoofer was a crappy 6.5 inch so now i use a car sub to shake the house and it thumps my chest to where i feel like my body is being squashed i have a dual 12 sub box and one single 12 sub box the dual is ported and the single is sealed plan on going to 15 to 18 and maybe 24 and 34 inch subs also does the 5 other speakers from hometheather in a box have crossovers
I’m using 2 svs pb 16 s in the front and have 2 velodyne dd 15 s in the rear. Planning on upgrading the velodynes one day to 2 more svs subs. Any quick tips or advise when using ported and sealed subs together? I understand it’s not ideal. As you know the velodyne subs have a incredible amount of options as do the pb 16s. Thank you. Great video!
same physics as if they were on the floor. You can use room simulators as a starting point along with crawling for bass. With proper time alignment, and EQ, it opens up more options as well.
I know you did a video awhile back introducing the Bose Soundtouch 300, after a year out, what do you think of it thus far? I just got it and wanted your opinion on where would be a good placement for the sub. Manual states along the same wall as the tv or along the same wall in a corner. I also purchased VI 300 and wanted to how far behind should the rears be from your couch? Thanks in advance!
I try to run 2 subs, but I have a small room, one is a 12" and one is a 15" sub, and between the placement, level and crossover adjustments on the subs and the pre-pro, and the phase adjustments on the subs, it is very frustrating to set up two subs properly. These tips could help, thank you. :D
Hi guys I got a Sony da2400es amp and a asw600 sub Ild like to know the best wiring setup and then the best set up to use Oh and main speakers are b&m s3 speakers
Hi, I have 2 rooms with 3 sealed subwoofers (Definitive Technology supercube sc6000 1500watts and two sc2000 650watts/ea; each box has 3 speakers) of the same brand and series, just different sizes: 1. Family Room has a 10 inch subwoofer in a 5.1.2 setup. A Denon AVR-S750H receiver that has 2 identical subwoofer outputs. 2. Projector room has two identical 8 inch subwoofers in a 5.2.4 setup. A Denon AVR-X3700H receiver with 2 independent subwoofer outputs. QUESTION: I want to buy a 2nd subwoofer for the family room to become a 5.2.2 setup. I can't buy a second 10 inch subwoofer because it's disontinued, so a 2nd subwoofer will be 8 inch. Which option below is best or would you have another suggestion? A. Because the projector room has the Denon AVR-X3700H receiver with independent subwoofer outputs, I was thinking of equipping this room with one 10 inch and one 8 in subwoofer (same brand and series, just different sizes). One would be located at the front right of the room, and the other at the back left of the room. B. The family room with the Denon AVR-S750H would have two identical 8 inch subwoofers. One would be located at the front right of the room, and the other at the back left of the room. Thanks.
Corner place 4 subs, buy a miniDSP, get correct delays, use a soundmeter on a support at the same height your ears are in the money seat and level calibrate all. Load a movie & profit.
When measuring the distance from sub to seating. If my sub is facing the wall, do I measure the distance to the wall, and then to my seat? Or from the center of the sub straight to my seat?? Thanks
Yes I'm using My mini DSP 2x4 one and with my pluggin 2x4 advance . Its one in and two out. its 4 out but I'm running two subs. the video is pretty cool with your presentation .The plugin My levels are away from the red area to avoid saturation. Distortion. It s the levels input and output 0 is the highest -70 is the lowest. mine is around -16 away from the red area. do you hav e that problem with your plugin ?Its confusing where to place the level gain at times.
@@andysummersthxcinemaandmyc7748 awesome...I have a nice 5.2 system but keep it simple. I have two 10 inch Cerwin Vegas in a corner because I live in a small apartment right now so I use the Behringer to bring down a 40-60hz bass peak centered at 50hz a few db. It works nice and it's of good quality.
Hi I have 2 Svs ultra sb 16 woofers they are up front in between my left and right speakers u think adding 1 more toward the back would give me more bass and give it mor pressure in my theather room my theather room is 28 feet long 19 feet with and 9 feet celling and it close of from rest of the house
Hey guys love the vids...I think you should make a set up video with an avr out of the box and do a full setup with the bass management and all. I watch all your videos I have an spl meter and a mk1 dsp mic but I get confused as to what's actually correct. I have decent knowledge but I'm obviously not a pro! Would love to see a sub configuration vid
Hi Gene, I have one sub JL Audio F113 and an Anthem AVM60 processor. I deactivated the ARO (JL Audio sub calibrator) and ran the ARC. With the ARC on, the bass has really less punch than with the ARC off, even if I changed room gain to 6dB. What can I do to get more bass punch with the ARC on ? Thanks !!
Make sure you also change the HPF slope as I found ARC set mine to 4th order. Switching it to 1st order and lowering the filter to 15Hz along with a boost in room gain like you did should do the trick. If not, rerun ARC limiting your calibration area to a 3ft radius from your money seat.
hi Gene! what's your perfect position for only one subwoofer in a rectangle room without the possibility to put it next to the mains? and 2 subwoofers with the same limitations? i haven't seen that anywhere!
Hi gene, do you just go back and forth with the distance until the response is the flattest via a measurement mic? Are there distances you don’t go over or under as a rule?
Audioholics are there limits to how long or short you would set the distance on the receiver to or just keep going until it measures the best? i.e the sub is 15feet is there any issue in setting it to 2 feet or 25feet in the receiver if it measures flat? Heard people say you should keep the difference in the receiver maximum 5-6 feet from its physical distance
@@Stevo19801 Start with actual physical distance but realize most subs have built in DSP that adds a slight delay. You typically won't have to use an extreme distance (too long or too short) but it's possible you will find a distance that works better than actual measured distance. It's a tool you use to tweak the integration of the subs and main speakers so use it.
Hi Gene have you used Arcam recivers whit Dirac Live calibration..? I have dual subwoofers one in the front right corner and the other one behind the couch back left corner. The problem whit arcam and dirac live is that they calibrate for youst one subwoofer but it's 2. I have set the volume so they play the same volume on my position were i sitt before i do the calibration. But i cant change the time aligment on them becouse the MS (milisecond) that they have is set as one. Any sugestions...?
Audioholics - In one of your videos you said how much you like Star Trek. But you called Mr. Spock Dr. Spock. He isn't a Dr. He was always called Mr. Spock.
the bass in my setup from the subwoofer is only good when I'm standing up or very far away. It's almost too subtle whenever I'm in my seating position. Any ideas why?
I used to think that my sub was a useless boomy box until activation of the so-called notch filter on the sub and blindly adjusted it to sound best to my ears.
hey gene i'm so jealous of your star trek gear i would love to own them i love star trek especially captain Kirk so if you have any spare i would love some
Error on proper time alignment @8:02 - "DSP processing of the subwoofer can cause additional delay" decreasing the total distance would account for additional delay.

Indeed about the shirt. Actually, the Dayton USB Mic I was referring too has a built,in preamp so SPL is accurate with the Cal file. Yes what you are doing is reasonable. If you want to ensure accuracy, use a calibrated SPL meter as a reference.
This video quality is really great. Thanks
@Ryan - Try adding some acoustic treatment, it can make a tremendous improvement in bass fidelity. Try some 6-inch-thick, or thicker, bass absorbers.
I wish Hugo would come back. Much better as a team!
My subs are routed through DCX2496, can set up pretty much all I want how I want.
Cheers!
Thanks again for a great video Gene!
I have the Yamaha A1060 AVR... it has 2 subwoofer outputs; but I can’t tweak them individually!
Yea sadly you have to step up to the A20XX model to get independent sub outs :/
Audioholics Thanks....Saving for a Denon... $1500 range. I had some issues with my Yamaha. I can’t go that route again!
Also thanks for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot from them!!! :^)
Nice content. Awsome T-shirt 😊
Hi Gene! What about President of Audioholics?😀
How would you find the best location for ceiling subs and do they act differently with room modes?
same physics as if they were on the floor.
Hi guys I got a Sony da2400es amp and a asw600 sub
Ild like to know the best wiring setup and then the best set up to use Oh and main speakers are b&m s3 speakers
Hi, I have 2 rooms with 3 sealed subwoofers (Definitive Technology supercube sc6000 1500watts and two sc2000 650watts/ea; each box has 3 speakers) of the same brand and series, just different sizes:
Thanks.
Hello. Dig ur videos! I’ve been told that you shouldn’t have a ported subwoofer & a sealed Subwoofer in the same room. Is this correct?
I use both right now. Sounds great.
If I sit in a rektangular small room and I only have one subwoofer, What is your bst advice for good bass?
Thank you as always Gene! The real question here for all of us Audioholics fans...Trump wig or Tribble?
LOL
William Shatner's hairpiece?
Gene do y’all have a video on parametric eq?
No I probably need to do one. Thanks for the suggestion.
I use the Behringer UltraCurve Pro 24/96
@@andysummersthxcinemaandmyc7748 awesome...I have a nice 5.2 system but keep it simple. I have two 10 inch Cerwin Vegas in a corner because I live in a small apartment right now so I use the Behringer to bring down a 40-60hz bass peak centered at 50hz a few db. It works nice and it's of good quality.
what are your thoughts on the Klipsch R-112SW?
hey gene does the integra drx 4.2 have interdependent subwoofer output please
Hi I have 2 Svs ultra sb 16 woofers they are up front in between my left and right speakers u think adding 1 more toward the back would give me more bass and give it mor pressure in my theather room my theather room is 28 feet long 19 feet with and 9 feet celling and it close of from rest of the house
80% for me!
We have multiple bass management and subwoofer setup videos on this channel. Please check them out!
Check out our placement guideline charts in this video and the related article in the description.Good luck.
How about lifting the Subwoofer off the floor? I'm talking about lifting it up 1 - 2 feet above the floor.
Only if you can't put it on the floor for aesthetic reasons.
Terrific Gene...a winner
Paradigm sub 2 is the master of all subs..
Is The MiniDSP UMIK-1 USB Calibated Measurement Microphone good enough by itself when plugged into my laptop when running REW ?
Sure that works if you have the cal file. It should be accurate down just to below 20Hz.
Hi gene, do you just go back and forth with the distance until the response is the flattest via a measurement mic? Are there distances you don’t go over or under as a rule?
Yes and check at least 2 of the most important seats.
It's a tool you use to tweak the integration of the subs and main speakers so use it.
did see that set up rew subs vid, great, please do same for towers, Show us more rev =)
My center channel sits on it in the middle front , so I don't want to move it but wonder how it would sound in corner, my room is rectangle
That's wild a 5th sub just for 1 person lol
Hi Gene have you used Arcam recivers whit Dirac Live calibration..? I have dual subwoofers one in the front right corner and the other one behind the couch back left corner. The problem whit arcam and dirac live is that they calibrate for youst one subwoofer but it's 2. I have set the volume so they play the same volume on my position were i sitt before i do the calibration. But i cant change the time aligment on them becouse the MS (milisecond) that they have is set as one. Any sugestions...?
Experiment with variable phase and cascading crossovers as needed, else get mDSP unit to control level, delay and EQ for up to 4 subs.
@@Audioholics Thanks for answear Gene, il test around..

- In one of your videos you said how much you like Star Trek. But you called Mr. Spock Dr. Spock. He isn't a Dr. He was always called Mr. Spock.
NERD.
the bass in my setup from the subwoofer is only good when I'm standing up or very far away. It's almost too subtle whenever I'm in my seating position. Any ideas why?
standing waves
I used to think that my sub was a useless boomy box until activation of the so-called notch filter on the sub and blindly adjusted it to sound best to my ears.
hey gene i'm so jealous of your star trek gear i would love to own them i love star trek especially captain Kirk so if you have any spare i would love some
They were a gift and my wife can tell where to get them. Thank you and Live Long and Listen
Error on proper time alignment @8:02 - "DSP processing of the subwoofer can cause additional delay" decreasing the total distance would account for additional delay.
No if a sub DSP adds 5msec of delay, then a sub sitting 12ft away would be set to 17ft to account for the added delay 1.1ft per msec.
@@Audioholics The Sub's internal DSP not the AVR's, Oh Sorry!
is 2 subwoofers too much for just a 2 seater living room?
no ..I have similar size .. I have two ..it's really good
you just don't need big ones ...two 8"/10"
Depends on how much power you got running to em... Too much bass is not good balance it with good mid bass and treble, it'll sound amazing!
Would you recommend one of these www.dspeaker.com/en/products/anti-mode-8033.shtml to those that don't want to fiddle with PC's and software.
Its all about the sub inclosure and placement of the sub.... Simple as. You don't need alot of power! Just be smart
Where's hugo?
Hey you got a hot mother in law Gene. She's worthy of the best seat in the house.
Please take it as a positive comment. Not meant as a smear in any manner. Find away to eq. Hugo's level to Gene's seeing as how you are at different scales
It would make you appear as people with equal value not the
Boss man and his hired help who has to look up to Gene. Renember distance from the camera can cause one to look smaller just by being set back further in a 3d plane all tricks used in film making for decades. Consider A riser for Hugo as an focal eq. Large enough so that he doesnt accidentally walk off it. Equal status for all.
