One thing I have learned in the cold winters in Sweden ( where we can have also no electricity ) have the old things on petrol or diesel to stay alive and happy.....All things we have on electric is not working.....
the look in Prudence's eyes says volumes... it does look like she was checking if you were ok... that is what makes life precious to me... glad your cabin was unscathed and you stayed safe... good luck and HNY... we have to appreciate the small things to stay sane these days, don't we.... and here in Georgia, we have oak trees hundreds of yrs old with little to no deeps roots and they will topple over really quick with heavy rains and wind...some with four foot diameter bases... we hate loosing them too...
Swear off *canned* beer for 2024, Slim. Microbrews are usually bottled, as most consumers of these beverages have palates. C’mon! You *can* do it,Slim. You have the power! 😉👍
Happy New Year, Slim. May you be blessed with good health, prosperity and happy memories around the cabin and out on the road in 2024. Thank you for sharing the good times and not so good times with us, keep the videos coming.
Aries running boards are a great option. If you were an “off road “ guy, they probably wouldn’t be tough enough for rock work, but for what you need them for they will be perfect. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your videos.
Happy New Year, Slim! What a load of work but you were safe and so was your cabin! ‘God works in mysterious ways’! Good neighbors are key. Thankfully they were there to lend the chainsaw. All lessons learned being remote. Thank you for sharing. We all learned from this. You are such a handy guy! Happy new trails ahead!🥳p.s. pack more food!🎉😂
That storm and being trapped by fallen trees for 5 days and nights sure shows how having alternate sources of energy, tools and a supply of food and water on hand is essential for SHTF. HAPPY NEW YEAR!🥳🎉🎇
HEY! Goooooood morning Slim! Happy New Year to you! I am looking forward to seeing all of your adventures in 2024 and I wish you all the very best! Thank you for taking us along! ✨🎉🎊
Sorry about all the lost trees. The deer and later the saplings will flourish. Happy New Year & hope for no more severe storms in NB. . Several years ago, we had a really bad windstorm that wiped out a power station. I live on the edge of the Plains. After several days with only a portable generator, I had an electrician come and measure the amps involved in the start up spike of everything in the house. AC, grill range & oven, dishwasher, washer & dryer etc. Then he added 25% more. Bought a natural gas generator and automatic transfer switch to handle it. It was not cheap, but it has really come in handy several times. Our freezer has stored our things and some for neighbors. When we travel in the Winter, there is always the danger of frozen pipes. The peace of mind has been priceless. I highly recommend that route as a long term solution.
My dad has the same running boards. If you get some rust protectant and spray them on the inside though the end caps. You will get many more years out of them. His first uncoated set rusted through after a few years.
If I was you. I'd run a metal bracket from that steel structural frame over to the bottom of the other bracket. Because when you're pushing down on that lightweight metal, it will break out. Believe me, I've fixed so many of them. But if you run a piece of metal over to that frame and over to that bracket to where you're pushing the force on that frame and not that light weight metal, you will hold a lot better.
Just a word from the west coast where we often get blow downs in strong winds. One thing I've learned from having 11 big trees on our property is that the soil conditions play a role. If it has been dry, the rootlets dry out and shrink away from the soil. Then if there is a big rain, the dry sockets, so to speak, fill with water and the tree is actually swimming in the water. Thus its important to keep your trees moistened especially if you anticipate early big storms in the fall.
2nd, I'm not sure if you were saying "cedars" in a generic way to mean evergreens or if those were cedars. Cedars are wet ground trees, so they should do okay stability wise, but planted or growing g on a slope as you have might not be the best habitat as it will dry out in summer. You can tell if they were sick by looking at the crosscut. Dark rings inside from. The bark indicates a disease problem. One of your cedars had that, I think , so the wind was just cleaning up the forest. Maples are definitely not more stable, and they are also wet bottom trees. Check with an arborist at local nursery before planting.
Having lived through this sort of storm myself I know how much work this is going to take to make right. I'm relieved to see that not only was your cabin spared, but your truck as well. It was pretty risky to go outside in that, but luckily you escaped unharmed. Silver lining is that you might get some additional usable land afterwards. *edit* you might be able to get some of that ripped into timber...
🥰 Happy New Year 🎉 Slim❣️You sure have had your share of bad storms there, but I admire how you are always calm and positive and get right to b clean-up and problem-solving. We learn so much with your videos. I truly appreciate you. I pray you have e a safe and healthy new year filled with exciting adventures. 🍻 🌿 🦌
September 30, 2024: Well we are into 2024 and please know how finding your channel a few months ago has truly been a blessing. Your travels, perspective on life and how you adapt to your living or is it life style. I have watched you build your porch to change campers and trucks and there has been life lessons there also. I do love nature to hiking but have not done it in awhile but got my walking poles and going to hit day trails here in Maryland. Your taste test of beers is definitely unique but this drink for the New Year with blueberry, not to sure. I am Hawaiian so we say “Hauole Maka Heki hou”. Happy New Year. Although, my nationality is many my father is orginally from Pickering, Ontario. From what I understand the Wise name is well know and an old trappers general store is a historic building with the name. Dad’s family traveled to islands of Hawai’i when USA was know as the New Land to them. Some of the language or sayings were passed down to include his favorite cake…ketchup cake!!! He told us of PAI and the potatoes. I never looked it up but thought he was kidding. He and Mom, he met a Hawaiian girl, are no longer with us but some day being close to the border may adventure out. Take care and glade you weather the storm.
All the best Slim for 2024.. it’s been a good year for a “ variety “ of subject videos from you ,, many thanks. I have the same reason of thinking “ every days a good day as long as you wake up 😀” Cheers from 🇦🇺
Happy New Year Slim! 🙂 I knew the deer would be happy, they love to nibble on my cedar trees too... and although you are hesitant to plant cedar again, the ones that fell were probably 50+ years old.... and as suggested already, maybe you could find someone who could mill a few of those trees(cedar especially) to allow you to build something for your home 🙂
You were so fortunate to not have anything hit your cabin. And so smart to store your Trailer away from all the danger. I'm glad you learned about the roots of the Cedars before you planted more on your lot. Take care.
Happy new year Slim! We have enjoyed your videos in 2023 and before and we will check out your new ones as well in 2024. Looking forward to see your travels, but we have also enjoyed your cabin videos. Sorry to hear about your trees, but you are ok and thats what matters the most. Hope you have an enjoyable 2024. Greetings from Rotterdam, The Netherlands
In a blackout, turn off electrical items which can cause surge when power is resumed. Leave light on so you know when powers back on. Happy New Years everyone🎉
Happy New Year Slim🎉 so glad you were able to see all the positive in Mother Natures house cleaning, with your help. Glad you will be able to be on the road again soon. Be safe and thanks for the positivity.
So glad your both you are your cabin were safe & sound, Slim. Thank goodness for good neighbors. Happy New Year to you as well. The deer's eyes speak volumes.
Happy 2024 slim, by all means let us know how that carburetor liked the brew lol ! Humor is what I wish everyone. Thanks for leading the way on the first day of the year !
Happy New Year Slim! I'm grateful that your cabin, camper, and truck were spared, and that you are safe. You're a very intelligent guy and you did a great job with the running boards. I love your sense of humor. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Happy new year, Slim! It's so sad to see the trees that feel in the storms. Even the deer looked sad when they walked up. I'm glad they were able to eat from the fallen trees. So sad, all around.
Recently found your channel. I’ve been researching fiberglass campers. The first episode I saw was you installing your shower in the camper. I have really enjoyed the things that you have shared. Kris G From Mt Pleasant, TX
Happy New Year's Slim. Glad to see the cabin, the camper, the truck, and especially YOU survived the storm and are safe and sound. Looking forward to more traveling videos. Hope you make it back my way this year. CHEERS from Colorado
Happy New Year 🎉 So sad to have lost so many trees. On the bright side you have a lot of firewood now. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. After watching you for quite some time. I know you will😊
Glad you didn't have any serious damage from that storm. I grew up in the country, and we always kept 2 weeks of food in the house during the winter, just in case. That a rule I still keep. While I am no prepper, I do have a small generator and a snowblower. I test them every fall and make sure I have fuel in the gas cans for the winter. I just view it as a bit of insurance for bad storms. As for what you need, I don't know, but a small generator would let you recharge the batteries that you have with your solar system.
Happy New Year to you, Slim. Glad you, the cabin, the trailer and the truck survived the storms! Looking forward to a great 2024, and more beers with friends. If you ever get to eastern Tennessee, I'll buy you some great local brews.
Cedar is strong and well anchored when it has neighboring trees around it and their roots are intertwined. As soon as infrastructure is involved, trees are weakened.
Happy New Year Slim! Thanks for the calm content you provided all last year, with great cinematography, story line, and very useful tips. You're quite the accomplished builder, mechanic, and environmental Steward. Take care. Safe travels. Keep healthy and happy at all times.
Happy New Year to my favorite Canadian 🎉 My heart broke a little watchin the last video, I have a large Cedar that is my favorite tree on this little patch of land..so sorry that happened. Thankful you, the Slimarado and cabin weathered the storm just fine & I look forward to whatever great ideas ya come up with for the the road side/entry . Stay safe❗✌️
Happy New Year Tator, out with the old, in with the new.....new adventures, new chainsaw, new trees to plant. At times life is grim, but there is always another sunny day with new plans & new ideas!
Happy New Year Slim 🥳 Glad there was no damage to the cabin, truck, or camper although sorry to see so many beautiful trees go. Happy trails and best of all in 2024.
I know the fear. I have 100 ft maples surrounding my cabin. Haha, my shower PEX connections were the last thing I did too. I stayed last winter due to cash flow. Alone. A mile down a rough forest road . It was a okay until snow came. Fortunately, a seasonal neighbor came 40 miles at those couple of times and plowed. I made him some good chili so thankful he had come out. It was a physical challenge even for this athletic girl. 😊 Now the running boards on MY Titan. I've always had to throw my hip onto the seat. Grab the bar and swing into place too. This year I saved enough for any major repairs on my motorhome should I need it. Now enjoying Quartzite. My 1st experience of the gorgeous desert. 😮 That was a total surprise and delight thanks to your videos that convince me I had to do the trip. TY😊 Blessing to you in the New Year.
So many trees falling around the cabin, and you were out there in the middle of it. Remember, potato head, it’s not how fast the wind is blowing but what the wind is blowing. Be careful out there, my friend. Keep it between the lines and watch your six.😮
Happy New Year from Texas, Slim! Thank you for the previous year of adventure and excitement and can't wait to see what and where this year brings you. May God bless and protect you always. Stay safe and stay alert. 😊
Slim, no matter how many new years pass, your attitude toward life will never get old. I watch each and every video you post, and this one seemed really special. I am excited to see where your resolution to be more social takes you and who it will bring to your life (and maybe to your channel). Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. They are a safe haven for me.
Happy new years! 👍 It's not as much about the health of trees or species in bad storms like that one,...it's saturated soil, wind = widow makers. I've seen many-many healthy trees come down. Even large branches. Around here, in areas where people love their trees..seems someone always has one come down on their house or car. And yes,..people have lost their lives. Glad the cabin was spared along with you in it. You may want to reconsider clearing just a few more that have a chance of causing problems later, (from someone who loves trees as much as you),. Storms these days seem to be worse and more frequent. Good luck. Cheers. 👍
@@sunshine3914 Clearing a safe zone around a house in the middle of a forest doesn't likely cause other trees to fall except in dense forest where they possibly support each other in the soil, (up to a point),. They still come down in the bad storms as you saw in his video. And if they don't,..you still have widow maker branches to deal with. I live 200ft above sea level and the pine here are a fragile species already. They only live about as long as we do and as beautiful as they are,...they've also been deadly and destructive. One might need to think through clearing property carefully and evaluate the risk they're will to accept. Living right up against tall trees in places hit with huge storms like the one slim was in,...is always a risk. When the wind is like that - it gets serious real fast. Cheers.
Happy New Year, Slim! You remind me of my mother in that she loved her beer, too! "Scruffy Butt" made me laugh out loud. You're a handy guy and a breath of fresh air compared to many on RUclips. Your positive and calm attitude--even in distressing situations--is so encouraging. You not only don't sweat the small stuff, but you're hardly even ruffled at the bigger dilemmas. You're truly an inspiration. I look forward to your 2024 adventures.
Happy New Year, Slim! Can't wait to see where the year takes you and what adventures you encounter. I know it'll be exciting and fun. Thanks for bringing us all along!
You are amazing. "Where there is a will, there is a way" seems to be your motto. You encourage (& teach) the rest of us. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable 2023. Looking forward to your adventures in 2024. Cheers! PS Thankful you, your cabin, & camper were not injured during the storms.
I watch your videos and forget all my troubles! Not about the storm but your videos put me in another place that is down to earth and very into life! Happy New Year and thank you!
All I was thinking was what a blessing you were safe... And that God's supplied you plenty fire wood... And that everything that you worked on...your cabin, truck and your camper was untouched...what a true blessing...it all could have been much, much worse...when your face was sad...mine was oh good..your cabin is fine and you are fine...you can still enjoy the remaining trees in shelter you had in a no electricity moment...take care..said a prayer for you...safe travels
hi slim, here in moncton we didn't get the same fierce wind as you did,but was still bad.Every fall now we are getting these hurricane storms and loosing many trees.I almost cried when i seen your cedar tree. They are extremely scarce now, since they used them in the mines as props back in the day.cedars are my favorite ,so have many planted around my property, but are slow growing emeralds.
This experience should show everyone that green energy is secondary to fossil fuels, a compliment, but secondary. Glad you are safe and came out relatively unscathed. Much to be thankful for.
Happy New Year, Slim! When nature gives you downed trees, you make firewood. I like it that you can keep your positive attitude.
Oh my gosh. That was a terrible storm but you did an excellent job cleaning up. Thanks for posting Mr. Potatohead.👍✌️
@RabidFlowerpot It's Slim.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! KEEP ON KEEPING ON! HUGS FROM COLORADO
👍 my bad Slim.✌️

Hi Slim,
Glad you didn't have any damage to your cabin and camper.
So happy the Deer are enjoying the new buffet! So cute. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Slim!!! Wishing you and all of your subscribers a wonderful, 2024!!! 🇨🇦🇺🇸❤❤❤
Naming those deer is hilarious- I love how you enjoy nature with humor and respect.
Happy New Year, Slim. May you be blessed with good health, prosperity and happy memories around the cabin and out on the road in 2024. Thank you for sharing the good times and not so good times with us, keep the videos coming.
You weren't really alone on New Years Eve. You had us. Here's to 2024 and participating vicariously in your travels.
Aries running boards are a great option. If you were an “off road “ guy, they probably wouldn’t be tough enough for rock work, but for what you need them for they will be perfect. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your videos.
Slim: You're a gem
Sad to see the loss of so many trees but so happy your cabin didn't suffer. My best to you for a tremendous 2024. Thanks for all you do 🙏🎉🌞
Hilarious! I laughed out loud at the burp at the end! You are so funny, Slim!
All the best for 2024 ! Please keep the video’s coming.
All of those trees will make good firewood and you still have a roof over your head. Glad your safe, that is the important thing.
Happy new year! We're so glad it wasn't worse. I didn't know cedars were shallow rooted either. Good to know!!
We met a very nice couple while we were camping and they invited us to their place over new years , it was wonderful. Always enjoy meeting new folks!
Happy New Year, Slim! What a load of work but you were safe and so was your cabin! ‘God works in mysterious ways’! Good neighbors are key. Thankfully they were there to lend the chainsaw. Well said and 💯 agree! That would have overwhelmed the best of us. Well done.
As bleh as they are, would be a good idea to have some of the MRE style food stashed there for emergencies.
Look at the bright side. At least you have plenty of firewood now!
That storm and being trapped by fallen trees for 5 days and nights sure shows how having alternate sources of energy, tools and a supply of food and water on hand is essential for SHTF. HAPPY NEW YEAR!🥳🎉🎇
You are safe, cabin is safe and you have thousands of dollars worth of premium firewood you didn't have to pay for. Split it, stack and store it soon.
HEY! Goooooood morning Slim! Happy New Year to you! I am looking forward to seeing all of your adventures in 2024 and I wish you all the very best! Thank you for taking us along! ✨🎉🎊

Happy New Year, Slim and all of you Potatoheads out there. Hello 2024!
Hopefully you can make some outdoor furniture with the downed trees. Then you will have them on your property to. Remember the ones you liked so much.

Happy New Year from Texas, Slim! Thank you for the previous year of adventure and excitement and can't wait to see what and where this year brings you. May God bless and protect you always. Stay safe and stay alert. 😊
First RUclips video I watched in 2024. Wouldn’t have it any other way! Best wishes for a great 2024, Slim!
You were very lucky with that storm! Whew … and yes your Eloise, Prudence, and Scruffy-butt were well fed afterwords ! They are so beautiful.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!🎉 may this year be your best ever. Safe n happy travels. So glad your safe from the storm...
Cabin is safe dispite so many trees falling..glad
Happy New Year Slim🎉🎊 so glad your cabin came thru the storm intact.
Good luck. Cheers. 👍
Only 30’ above sea level here, & what I’ve witnessed is whenever they start culling trees, it doesn’t take much (or very long) for the rest to uproot.
Cheers.
The belch at the end was perfect!!!
I’m glad you were safe during the storm.
Happy New Year and many thanks for sharing your optimism and adventures with us! May your road ahead be blessed !
Happy New Year, Slim! Can't wait to see where the year takes you and what adventures you encounter. I know it'll be exciting and fun. Thanks for bringing us all along!
Happy New Year Slim 🎉, love your inspiring videos.
Glad you like them!
Lucky, Lucky, you, the cabin, & your RV; all escaped the wrath of Mother Nature.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
Happy New year Slim , terrible all the damage from that storm. Glad the cabin and truck made it!
Go on the bright side you got a lot of firewood, nice place
You are amazing. "Where there is a will, there is a way" seems to be your motto. You encourage (& teach) the rest of us.
Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable 2023. Looking forward to your adventures in 2024. Cheers!
PS Thankful you, your cabin, & camper were not injured during the storms.
Welcome to 2024, Slim. Hope it's full of wonderful adventures.
I watch your videos and forget all my troubles! Not about the storm but your videos put me in another place that is down to earth and very into life! Happy New Year and thank you!
Could use some of the logs to plant some mushroom spores!
❤❤️🩹 ohhh friend!!! I’m so sorry about all the destruction!!! Prayers for the healing journey for you and your property!!
Happy New Year to you, too.
hi slim, here in moncton we didn't get the same fierce wind as you did,but was still bad.Every fall now we are getting these hurricane storms and loosing many trees.I almost cried when i seen your cedar tree. They are extremely scarce now, since they used them in the mines as props back in the day.cedars are my favorite ,so have many planted around my property, but are slow growing emeralds.
Mother Nature just wanted to make sure you had enough firewood to get you through the winter 😀
This experience should show everyone that green energy is secondary to fossil fuels, a compliment, but secondary. Glad you are safe and came out relatively unscathed. Much to be thankful for.
Not at all. It shows we are energy pigs, far too inticed by electrical gadgets. Conserve and we will use less resouces, of all types. SP
