Your expression was classic - you've been RickRolled. I saw him 3 weeks ago live on stage and he's still superb. Such a great character too and really enjoying performing in front of 35,000 people.
He was about 19 when this was released. He's now in his 50's and STILL sounds good.
I know I'm late, but two or so years ago he performed live for a Polish Game Show called "Guess That Melody" and it's one of the spiciest performances I've ever seen on national TV

I was fortunate to experience this song in real time back in the 80's. I recall first hearing it while riding in a car to the local mall back in real time. It was amazing. And it was a little shocking when I saw the singer who doing the song. Mind blown.....

I had to pause when he started singing and laugh. EVERYONE who has never seen this video, even if they've heard the song, would never put that voice and that face together. But it takes nothing away from this being a great song.

Rick started out as a drummer in a group called FBI, they used to practice in my mates tyre fitting garage, until he filled in for the singer who was sick and Pete Waterman of (Stock Aitken Waterman) heard him and Persuaded him to go to record at his studios in London, the rest is history.
Rick was 21 when this came out in 1987. It was his first song, he had 8 top ten hits in the next 5 years. He became disenchanted with the music business and retired at 27.
He has started gigging again and has released several albums in the past 5 years. His first new one, 50, premiered in the UK at number one. I prefer his newer songs, he looks more like his voice. One of his latest is “Try” ruclips.net/video/0Aud6ROCkKI/видео.html

The only voices I can think of that really had the same kind of reaction from listeners was Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers. Their sound was called Blue Eyed Soul in the 1960s.
People have the same kind of reaction from Rick Astley. They are pleasantly surprised that such a young man has such a rich and mature sound coming from him.

First heard this song in 1987...I pictured the singer as a middle-aged, blue-eyed soul singer...I was shocked when I saw the video for the first time...Rick looked like he was still in middle school...Sometimes the voice doesn't match the face...Either way, it's an awesome song!
