I like Alliant powders also. Good old Unique is hard to beat for medium to medium heavy 12 gauge and heavy 20 gauge. It's also good for a 1-1/4oz. low pressure 10 gauge loads. I use quite a bit of Green Dot in Magnum pistol loads. RX-7 is real great stuff for cast bullet loads and light 30-06 loads duplicating 30-30 velocities. You're right Alliant is about the most versatile brand.
Mike Hunter Southern Germany. We need a federal background check & a state approved course to apply for a very limited license which actually also allows officials to check the correct storage of powder IN YOUR HOUSE. So just to reload your own ammo, you pay several hundred € in paperwork and loose some of your privacy rights :(
Thank you. Great information. I load 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 45 ACP and 45 Colt. Tried the Blue Dot (liked it...) but dropped it in favor of Winchester 296/H110. You need a chronograph to get the most out of 296/H110 as the sweet spot charge is very narrow. When you find it, nothing beats it in terms of performance, accuracy and clean burn. Magnum SSP are a must! Longshot is a "dirty" powder but it is HOT. Easy to feed/meter. Great for hot 38 Special +P. Not so great in pistols due to the residue it leaves. But...I shoot 45 ACP through my Blackhawk (convertible). Good info. Enjoy!
Great vid guy. Nice to see you hear from the Hi-Point forums. I love Unique as well. I've always used 4835, but I may try some RL15 now, based on your recommendation. Only needing two powders to make effective loads in about anything, makes my preppers mind happy! Cheers!
Thanks for referring me to your powder pages. I think I am sold on either the red dot or the unique, and make be the blue dot if I go up to a heavier shots. Thanks..
Good tip on the magnum small pistol primers. I just loaded my first batch of 40S&W with blue dot and I was getting unburnt powder on me. Shooting out of Springfield XD40 SC with a 3" barrel. Will load them with magnum SPP next time.
Ok, thank you. If my local gun shop has Lyman manuals (which Im sure they will) I will see If I can pick one up either today or tomorrow and get to studying. Thanks again for the help.
i use a wad made with onger egs in teh cushion section to match the height of the shell. It takes a bit of trial and error to get it right, but thats why i keep 15-20 different kinds of wads about.
ues rl 15 will work well with 270 win. there are several powders that will work in those depending on what loads. blue dot, green dot and unique come to mind.
@N4UPD unique burns as clean as any other alliant powder. all gunpowder leaves residue. ive tried others and i dont see much of a differnce. bullseye is close (but not exactly) to the speed of unique. i use unique because i load both pistol and shotgun shells with it. if you only load handguns, bullseye would be a good choice.
@MrDeltasgremlin In my opinion yes its worth the change. H380/H335 has a "herd mentality" behind its popularity. Because a bunch of other people like it, that means i should like it. ive tried dozens of different powders over the years and i always come back to RL15 for consistency and accuracy.
usually i prefer winchester. they seem a bit more consistent than federal or CCI. given shorages of primers that seem to crop up lately ive loaded them with whatever i could get, and gotten acceptable results.
unique or power pistol should be a good choice. if you wanted light, slow plinkers with cast bullets you could try something like IMR SR7625. that would put a 230 out there at about 900 FPS.
only great alliant powder you forgot was 2400 in 44 magnum and 50 ae with magnum cci primers , a dillon seems to feed alliant powders better . if you have not tryed 2400 ,its great accuracy in 2400. i been reloading 20 years and you are right for the money alliant is best , i like vetahvouri but it costs too much , it would be up there if it was not so high price.
Thanks man. That helps quite a bit. Im just getting started in the reloading world and dont have a clue on what primers, powder or bullets to obtain. I have a pretty good knowledge on the tools and hardware to make a finished round but dont really know where to begin or how to select the actual components to put into producing the cartridge itself. Any info and advice you can supply me with is greatly appreciated.
Hey SW, Great video. I am with you. I bought R33 and did not know what to use it on , and neither did the clerk that sold it to me. I got in touch with the tech at Alliant and he set me straight. I am goin to trade it for another powder as I can't return it.CASE IN POINT, if in ANY DOUBT, call the mfg. I can't tell you how helpful the guys at Sierra Bullet Smiths, and Alliant have been to me . They are not arrogant know it alls as are some of these clerks that do not even reload. Mr.s/w I thk u.
oh my bad, you had me confused. i thought you were talking about regualr loads with 10mm, not my steel sihouette loads. the blue dot loads for steel silhouette use more powder that normal with lighter bullets than normal and need a magnum primer to get the larger powder charge burning evenly. sorry for teh confusion!
If I'm using CCI 209 Magnum primers what type of powder should I use for reloading 410 4 birdshot Buckshot and slugs what would be the best powder to use for a general purpose
Great video. Thank you. I bought blue dot and power pistol to make .40 sw 180 grain for my pistol. Would like one more to try. Would like high muzzle flash as my son loves to see the fire ball. Also am shooting pistol at fifty to seventy five yard gong. Thanks anyone suggestions. Used 7.2 grains if blue dot
Would you change anything on the list to adapt to recent new powders or lack of availablity? I've noticed that WSF is less picky than green dot, and covers a broader range of usefulness. Too bad I haven't been able to get any for a while.
Would you give your R15 recipes for the rifle cartridges you mentioned...30-06, 308, 7.62x39, 5.56, 243? If not in comments..personal communication...thanks...love your vids....great help with the Lee products!!
Great vid, lots of helpful info. Is RL15 really that great? Everyone sings the praises of H380 and H335, but I don't like the idea of buying multiply powders when I'm only going to use them for long range target practice. Should I make the switch to RL15?
would the blue dot work in fiocchi hulls with 616 primers, i would like to load these hulls with 1oz lee key drive slugs, waawhite wad or fed 12s3, great video and very informative thanks
i do it alot. trail boss or other powders like unique or SR7625 work well. i shoot a cast load from my ishapore 308 with a 160 gr cast bullet and 7 grs of SR7625 at about 1100 FPS. Check my video on SR7625 powder for some range footage of my 308 using this load.
@donthebodyguard how fast are you wanting to push them, and out of what kind of gun? red dot or unique wil work in most pistol loads, and blue dot for carbine loads.
So, would the Reloader 15 work well with a 270 Win also? Also, have you ever heard of a powder that will reload shot shells and the 357 magnum? Thanks for the very informative video it is helping me narrow down some things.
Nice video, I'm wondering what is your favorite load for 9mm at the range with Red Dot? I like the 115grain FMJ bullets& the plated round nose. I'm shooting a Sig P320C and just wondering how many grains of power you would recommend? #new to reloading
Re-loader novice here. For a 9 mm pistol 3.3 " barrel (xds), do you suggest the magnum primer or maybe the magnum primer is best for pistol application ? Unique or Red Dot for this application. (Great info.- thanks for this video)
Ok, thanks. What books do you recommend? I'm going to pick up my press hopefully next week if everything goes as planned. It comes with the Richard Lee Modern Reloading 2nd Edition manual. What others are good in conjunction with this one?
Informative vid; thanks. I've heard of people using Trail Boss in medium-calibre rifle cartridges like .303 British etc. with light or cast bullets as short range practice loads. Have you any experience in this area?
You mentioned using Red Dot w/ 6-8 gr. powder charge for 12ga target loads? Never heard of a charge that light? Average powder charges are in the 18gr range. ????
Cool video. Liked and subscribed. Do you have any data for a 3006 200gr. gas checked cast bullet with the trail boss powder . I plan on shooting it on my savage 111. And im looking for a powder that I wont have to fill the void with poly fill. I havent tried Any of those powders but always open to new things to try. I use Titegroup fr my 9mm, 38 special, 45acp,. and I have only used H4350 for my 3006.
I'm curious you run 7-9 grains Red Dot in your target loads which is less than half the qty in most of the Alliant recipes. I've never shot Red Dot (currently trying to use up my American Select) but considering switching if it is bulky enough to take 9 grains and still lift the wad/shot cup high enough to get a good crimp with no pooching. If it is not that bulky, how do you get a good crimp with such a small charge?
Great video... I going to start reloading in the near future. I would like to know which powder would you select for reloading 9mm Luger, 223 Remington or 556 NATO. Is there a powder that can be used for reloading of both ammunition. Thanks
When using factory ammo in my 9mm I have fairly good luck with the UMC 115 grain. What powder would you recommend using to replicate (or even better exceed) these factory rounds without breaking the bank?
I am new to reloading and I have Red Dot powder and 125 LRN cast bullets BNH 17. Can you recommend a load for this combo with the COL measurment also. I see so many different combos out there I wanted to get your opinion. I also have Unique, Blue Dot, Power Pistol and Blue Dot. Do you recommend any 9mm loads for those products? I do have several reloading manuals but it is hard to find the combination I am using. Thanks
I am just starting to reload shell shot fot 7/8 lee slugs. I was going to buy blue dot, they were out, so I got alliant pro reach. you think it will be ok and what grain should I use. thank for your input.
Hey i was wonder about shotshells. I have high brass hulls like remington winchester etc. These were slugs and 00bk shells before i shot them. Can i use them in reloading. Im new to reloading thx
I'm going to start loading 5.56 soon as I was able to score some RL 15.In your opinion which primer works best with RL15 in 5.56? I have access to CCI 5.56 military primers but I would like to ask your opinion. Thanks in advance.
A great video as always SW, thanks for sharing with us people that are still learning :)
@siliconwolverine Thanks for taking the time to help me.Take care...
HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Excellent!! Thank you so much! I'm gonna get my reloading licence this year and this gave me a great starting point for powders to begin with!
Where do you live that you require a reloading licence? Just curious.
Mike Hunter Southern Germany. We need a federal background check & a state approved course to apply for a very limited license which actually also allows officials to check the correct storage of powder IN YOUR HOUSE. Thank you very much for the video! It was extremely informative. You've just got a new subscriber!
Thanks for referring me to your powder pages. I think I am sold on either the red dot or the unique, and make be the blue dot if I go up to a heavier shots. Thanks..

Awesome info!!! Would love to hear/see more about your pistol shotshells and other customized loads you may use.
Good vid! I love Alliant as well. They make great hunting loads!
ues rl 15 will work well with 270 win. there are several powders that will work in those depending on what loads. blue dot, green dot and unique come to mind.
no. blue dot and unique overlap enough to eliminate the need for green dot. it is a median powder in between those two.
@Darrenspottiswood yeah thats doable. start out about 41 grs and work up from there. id max it around 43.5 or so.
I too have found RL15 to work for just about every rifle cartridge. always have my RL15 and Unique :)
@Imagamer85 that sounds like it should work fine. you may need to add a filler disc under the slug to get the right column height though.
no, i use large pistol std. magnum primers were cratering and showing pressure signs.
@Darrenspottiswood you can back it off to start with if you like. in my shooting the harder you drive them the better they seem to do.
great video. I like the kermit the frog commentary.
@MrDeltasgremlin In my opinion yes its worth the change. H380/H335 has a "herd mentality" behind its popularity. Because a bunch of other people like it, that means i should like it. ive tried dozens of different powders over the years and i always come back to RL15 for consistency and accuracy.

I use Unique for .45auto, and .38 Special, i've noriced it burns more completely near the +p range.
@donthebodyguard anytime. happy turkey day to you too!
Good stuff, thanks for posting
i was loading 6.0 grs of blue dot behind a 115 gr bullet. it was running in the 14-1500 fps neighborhood.
I use red dot with my 12 gauge birdshot loads...pretty good stuff for the price.
Outstanding video. thanks
@TakingU2Skool PB is a fine powder for low velocity target loads, but for anything hotter than trap loads it doesnt get the job done.
@fatboy3992 yep it works just fine! i use it with 150 and 170 gr bullets.
unique or power pistol should be a good choice. if you wanted light, slow plinkers with cast bullets you could try something like IMR SR7625. that would put a 230 out there at about 900 FPS.
155gr hornady XTP. normal bullets for the 10mm are 180 gr or bigger.
i use current data from aliants website. the charge may vary depending on hull and wad selection.
great video
So much info in 8mins!!!!
I am new to reloading and unique is great because is hard or almost impossible to double charge
only great alliant powder you forgot was 2400 in 44 magnum and 50 ae with magnum cci primers , a dillon seems to feed alliant powders better . if you have not tryed 2400 ,its great accuracy in 2400. i been reloading 20 years and you are right for the money alliant is best , i like vetahvouri but it costs too much , it would be up there if it was not so high price.
very well and clear explaining

Another great video SW. I have some private questions. Keep posting this great stuff bud.
@siliconwolverine Some where around 1079 Ruger p-95
Hey SW, Great video. I am with you. I bought R33 and did not know what to use it on , and neither did the clerk that sold it to me. I got in touch with the tech at Alliant and he set me straight. start reading. there are tons of books out there on reloading. buy a few and read them, and youll start to get an idea of where you want to go.
My .45load, .45 "super" 6.0grain under .255grain lead rnfp. Mostly for when the hogs try and charge me while hunting.
oh my bad, you had me confused. i thought you were talking about regualr loads with 10mm, not my steel sihouette loads. the blue dot loads for steel silhouette use more powder that normal with lighter bullets than normal and need a magnum primer to get the larger powder charge burning evenly. sorry for teh confusion!
todd ster I would start with 21 grs or unique on a 1 1/4oz shot load. max out prolly around 23-23.5
If I'm using CCI 209 Magnum primers what type of powder should I use for reloading 410 4 birdshot Buckshot and slugs what would be the best powder to use for a general purpose
Thanks Just started

ok thanks! i have a buddy that has an unopened can of unique that he's had a long time and said he'd take $5 or $10 for it
Would you give your R15 recipes for the rifle cartridges you mentioned...30-06, 308, 7.62x39, 5.56, 243? If not in comments..personal communication...thanks...love your vids....great help with the Lee products!!
@donthebodyguard 4.7 grs of unique should do that just fine. load to whatever OAL berry reccomends.
Great vid, lots of helpful info. Is RL15 really that great? Everyone sings the praises of H380 and H335, but I don't like the idea of buying multiply powders when I'm only going to use them for long range target practice. Should I make the switch to RL15?

Nice informative video. What would you recommend as a good pheasant load with Unique?

Re-loader novice here. For a 9 mm pistol 3.3 " barrel (xds), do you suggest the magnum primer or maybe the magnum primer is best for pistol application ? Unique or Red Dot for this application. (Great info.- thanks for this video)
lighter target loads like 3/4 and 7/8 oz
Do you use the recommended 49 gr of blue dot with the drive key slugs? I'm just starting to load and that seems a lot. Great video
200 rounds or more. trail boss is best with a lead bullet about 900 fps or so
lyman makes good manuals, and hornady does as well. i prefer lyman myself.
You mentioned using Red Dot w/ 6-8 gr. powder charge for 12ga target loads? Never heard of a charge that light? Average powder charges are in the 18gr range. ????
unique is more versatile for midrange loads.
10mm uses large primers
Cool video. Liked and subscribed. Do you have any data for a 3006 200gr. gas checked cast bullet with the trail boss powder . I plan on shooting it on my savage 111. unique should give similar results to factory UMC.
Got a question I have a 300 Win Mag, 30-06, 300 Short Action Ultra Mag, and a 223 rifle what type of powder should I use? Should I go with the rl15?
blue dot is too slow for 40 cal unless its in a carbine. unique or bullseye is a better choice.
Great video... I going to start reloading in the near future. I would like to know which powder would you select for reloading 9mm Luger, 223 Remington or 556 NATO. Is there a powder that can be used for reloading of both ammunition. Thanks
you will need two different powders. rifle and pistol ammo cannot be loaded with the same powder. i would use rl15 for 223 and unique for 9mm.
thanks for the video!
I've been having a heck of a time finding Alliance 2400.
any thoughts on why?
any suggestions?
i called and talked to alliant tech service. they had the data on file there. its not published because its an unpopuar combination.
Subsonic .308 loads with Redot
i dont know. i dont use MEC equipment.
I heard that Unique burns dirty. Could it be replaced with Bullseye that supposed to burn cleaner?
When using factory ammo in my 9mm I have fairly good luck with the UMC 115 grain. What powder would you recommend using to replicate (or even better exceed) these factory rounds without breaking the bank?
Can you use the red dot in 45acp, 38spcl and 357 magnum and avoid having to use magnum primers?
I am new to reloading and I have Red Dot powder and 125 LRN cast bullets BNH 17. Can you recommend a load for this combo with the COL measurment also. I see so many different combos out there I wanted to get your opinion. I also have Unique, Blue Dot, Power Pistol and Blue Dot. Do you recommend any 9mm loads for those products? 8.2 grs of unique should top 1000 FPS with a 185 gr 45 ACP.
nice vid....thanks! i'm about to start reloading .44mag. which powder do u recommend for a 240gr semi wad cutter? thanks
I am just starting to reload shell shot fot 7/8 lee slugs. I was going to buy blue dot, they were out, so I got alliant pro reach. you think it will be ok and what grain should I use. thank for your input.
How many grains of unique do you use for 1 1/8 oz #4 shot? Or any weight of shot I guess
Hey i was wonder about shotshells. I have high brass hulls like remington winchester etc. These were slugs and 00bk shells before i shot them. Can i use them in reloading. Im new to reloading thx
12ga with 6-8gr powder charge would have trouble pushing the wad out the muzzle. NO?????
I would like to reload the new lever 30-30 red tip shell. can you recommend powder or who can I call for this? thank you
I'm curious as to what kind of speed you get from your 9mm carbine loads, and how much powder under the 115gr bullet?
168 gr hornady AMAX match bullet
how many rounds or 38spl can you load with one of those bottles of trail boss
and what bullet is it best for
Blue dot sprays me with unburned all over. Any ideas why
Have you ever tried Green Dot for target shot loads?
I'm going to start loading 5.56 soon as I was able to score some RL 15.In your opinion which primer works best with RL15 in 5.56? I have access to CCI 5.56 military primers but I would like to ask your opinion. Thanks in advance.
i use whatever i can get my hands on, usually wolf or winchester. i have yet ot find a primer brand that doesnt go bang!
