Don't know why I did this as I'm usually not into Western games. Played on Daphne Emulator.
A Western/Gun shooting game where you play a character named Buck, whose wife and children were killed by a group of bad guys. Revenge is the only thing on your mind. You head for town, equipped only with your gun, searching for the people who ruined your life.
This is Konami's only arcade game that uses a laserdisc. It uses full length animation rather than computer graphics. -

Some dudes just appear out of nowhere to kill his family for no reason, so this guy goes insane and kills everything from snakes to dinosaurs. Gotta love Konami.

I played this in my Navy days back in 1985.
while it was fun, it always made me wonder why there were elements that had nothing to do with an 1880's western drama.
Like the 2 headed dinosaur, the creature in the swamp, the cyclops cave monster ,pterodactyl and what the fuck was with the skeleton in the sombrero jumping up out of the ground?.
It was the Wild West after all! :-P

Very fast paced and screwy game, more like a series of images. When the word shoot flashes you are supposed to shoot, as far as I can tell. Wouldn't it be simpler just have it appears when you are supposed to shoot?
This is why I love the 80s.

Something happened during this game. I think something happened. Did something happen? Did he get revenge? Why does he have a Japanese woman's voice sometimes? What the heck is going on?

Though they look like dinosaurs they were actually Ultraman and Godzilla enemy-styled monsters. All very popular in Japan. I see them sold in stores here even these days and a lot are the same dinosaur-looking monster/badguy/enemies from the 70s and 80s. Not fitting for a western I know.
back in the day, I used to work at a video arcade store in the mall (Tilt/Nickels and Dimes). After the store closed and we were cleaning up, the manager I would very badly over-act this track. After doing it four or five times, we'd shut the breaker down for that wall of games. It got REALLY annoying REALLY fast.
My god... I remember this was my favorite game when i was young. Spending all my quarters...
I think this could have worked as a fantastical anime creation, where different worlds mesh because this thing is beyond surreal, they even managed to incorporate the paths of the dead into this "game".
Yet again, as a game it fails miserably as a "movie" it's quite entertaining , that was the bane of almost all the laserdisc/fmv games.
The animation in this is top draw, in light of when it was made, i like it, even if it makes no sense whatsoever
I have to admit that I loved playing this back in the day. It was a product of its time.

When I was 13 and 14, I used to hang out at the arcade at the mall on Friday nights with my best friend, and we used to play this game over and over again. I could never get past the Mexican with the Gatling gun in the church bell tower, but that didn't stop me from trying again and again.
I just thought of this game out of the blue tonight and came straight to RUclips to search for it. So very happy to find this. Takes me back to that winter of 1986.

I do wonder if they hired Toei Animation Studios for this, like Taito did for Time Gal and Ninja Hayate. The US made laser disc games tended to use Don Bluth for their animation (at least for both Dragon's Lair games, and Space Ace). I do wonder who did the animation for Road Avenger, and that Cobra Command game that Data East put out.
Road Avenger was animated by Toei. Not sure about Cobra Command but the animation looks very similar. However i have no clue if Toei animated Badlands lol. But it looks very Toei esque to say the least.
Can somebody explain to me, what have I been witnessing for the past 11 minutes and 8 seconds. And who, the hell slipped so much LSD in my beer, when i was looking away?
I remembers dragons lair and space ace with great detail but I only remembered seeing a cowboy in crutches getting tripped by a bullet and couldn’t recall the game. Finally found this and it all came back to me. I knew the animation was different from the other two but it came out around the same time. Wow, nostalgia. Thanks for posting.
Man, this makes me remember the anime of Lupin the 3rd. Is it made by the same creators?
Also, the game looks a bit cheesy with so many pauses, however, the player did very good in the longplay ^^.
Played this game, or should I say tried to play it, at an arcade somewhere in Orange County, CA back in the summer of 1988. I'm a sucker for Westerns. What can I say?
If it was at an arcade in Laguna Hills, I probably gave you quarters. I worked there from 1985-1988

He's chasing a guy riding a horse, while he's on a train.
He shoots the guy, who falls off a cliff and EXPLODES.
Unlike Dragon's Lair, Badlands was nowhere near as successful and came out on the heels of the 1983 video game crash.
Even for a laserdisc/FMV game, this feels incredibly disjointed. At least games like Time Gal and Road Avenger are coherent. It doesn’t even matter if you don’t get all ten villains. Just killing the big bad means you win.
This may sound stupid but if this were a show I'd probably watch it just for the camp value alone.

I'd like to know if Badlands inspired Sunset Riders. Maybe someone at Konami said, "Remember that cowboy game we did? Let's try that again, but with actual gameplay!"
This game is a headtrip, i expected straight forward wild west action, but from the title sequence alone i was already scratching my head, we have triclop's, 2 headed dragons, earth elemental, and a pteradactyrl in one sequence alone, not to mention random japanese speaking, lighting fast outlaws, roses that kill you, and attacks from wildlife but no bear fight oh well... i guess they can't do everything a semi entertaining game but don't blink or you'll miss an attack, this is one BAD game

I can't believe this entire game from start to finish is only about ten minutes. As a kid I spent literally HOURS at this machine over the course of several months slowly learning all the villains and patterns through trial and error or watching others play. In 1984-85 this was one of the most popular games at my local arcade/ movie theater.
I’d like to know which studio did the animations for this game. The art style reminds me of “Lupin III” in some way.
This game looks as if it was developed by two different teams: the original designers who made it into a Western, and a goof troop of a team who knew nothing about the game that Konami swapped the original team for on the last minute (dinosaurs, cyclops, roses that kill you, death scenes, etc.).
Oh man! Watching this was surreal. I pumped so many quarters into this game. I don’t remember a, “shoot” icon. I remember it being more knowing the exact second to shoot based on the video. Great game in the day!

They show you being hanged... then going to jail afterwards for shooting that woman that was jumping to attack you. haha how does that work?. I think you need to wait for her to turn into a monster before you shoot her but even a fraction of second late and it eats you.

Lets see, what can we do to make this better
1. Stop blacking out the damn scenes everytime you need to shoot!
2. Edit the shots better so that the success and failure scenes fit smoothly
3. The gun sound effect needs work instead of a bit crushed version
4. Maybe have better dialogue or none whatsoever
5. And this being made for 1984 around the same year as anime such as robotech, teknoman, and the same decade as dragon's lair and thayer's quest this could have been better

Edit: some of those sections were completely unfair. The bartender and the bad guy in the saloon gave you no time to react at all and that last one with the women and children also gave you no time to react.
Can anyone explain why there is a Cyclops and dinosaurs in a Western game?
I thought he was hunting down one man at a time then we shift to a cave with skeletons and a cyclops.I really don't know why that deviation was necessary It's so confusing watching this 1st time round
