That was all he needed to do that day Like you said he entered the most dangerous place in the world so he needed a break In my headcanon He must enter the Anti-Mass Spectrometer, Push the Cart into the beam, get it back, Go to his Office, Process the Data from the Experiment, Return to Sector-C, Perform other Experiments, then Have Lunch, Do More Experiments in Sector-C, return Home for the day.
Kind of crazy that there's no decontamination sequence. That H.E.V. suit Gordon was wearing could have been dangerous after being in the test chambeeeeeeer.
According to Engamer01 on the Black Mesa discussion forums: They think it's hand waved that the H.E.V. Suit has strong protection in radiated areas, but only for as long as the suit is charged. If radiation saps the suit's charge, then the radiation starts affecting the wearer directly and fast. It may be possible the H.E.V. has the ability to decontaminate itself which is why Gordon doesn't suffer additional damage after leaving a radiation section of Black Mesa.
Alternatively, the room with the blast door directly leading to the AMS could be a decontamination chamber itself, seeing the sort of, big, vent thing on ceiling. Only a speculation..
It does not emit any radiation, it just emits deadly enigmatic energy beams. The H.E.V suit mostly offers a survival chance if such beam hits you. It also can be used in other dangerous areas, such as areas with radiation/chemical/biological/other hazards, and only then it must be decontaminated. These beams most likely don't emit any radiation at all, because the suit has radiation counter and it's completely silent during the test.
Suddenly I want a mod that makes the entirety of pre-disaster Black Mesa explorable, with NPCs and other details for immersion and atmosphere. Closest thing I can think of is Half-Life Induction, a mod made by Hazard Team, the same team that also made Field Intensity. Edit: Originally I had forgotten the developmemt team and mod names respectively. I said I'd edit them in, and I did.
That's what the Global Pre-Disaster Initiative is working on I plan on making a Part 2 to this Video that shows more of the Facility at some point in the Future

Anyway, the aforementioned mod, Half-Life Field Intensity (which I strongly recommend if you liked Opposing Force) was made by Hazard Team, which also made Half-Life Induction. Now THIS mod is, indeed, entirely focused on pre-disaster Black Mesa. You play as Gordon in past situations that are mentioned or implied in official Half-Life games and chapters. It's short, but well done.

Interestingly, TSP originally started out as a HL2 mod, and despite the shift to Unity engine in the Ultra Deluxe, you can still see some leftovers from HL2 Source engine in the Abandoned Office area found near the end of the Games Ending.
Additionally, the Museum Ending has a room displaying the concept for an unused ending where Stanley would get thrown into a warzone fighting the aliens, with the game becoming self-aware and waging war against the Narrator. This may be a stretch, but Stanley here can be interpreted as Gordon and the Narrator as the G-man.
Black Mesa is one of the most fun research facilities to explore in video games. It's not a one big castle with endless rooms and creatures everywhere. I love when mods create new areas but connected to ones from HL1, BS, Opfor, and Decay. Makes it look even bigger. Also what?! 24:53

In questionable ethics you can also find xen life meaning that they've interacted with xen in the past. You can also find hev suits in xen as well and most likely the combine would've wondered where these lifeforms came from. The combine would eventually find earth and Freeman would fight a battle he has no chance of winning.
Gman is so mysterious his intention are really unknowable, he's definitely not on our side, but he's not on the Combine's side either , people used to think the Combine was his employer and put him up to the Black Mesa Incident that allowed their coming but with how they captured him in Half Life AlyxMakes you kidna wonder... Was Gman preparing Earth for the Combine invasion by giving us a test with the Nihilanth invasion? Did he know it was inevitable and thought he could make things happen to further his own ends in the dawn of earth's end? Imagine if this was implemented in the main game, like there would be a chance of, say, 1 in a million that the resonance cascade never happens and the game would conclude uneventfully.
It's actually funny how all Gordon has to do is literally push probably one of the most radioactive materials into a machine that likely also uses radioactive materials as power, and then he's allowed to walk around the facility and do what he wants.
Xen crystals are not radioactive, noted by the distinct lack of ticks which would otherwise come from the Geiger counter built in to the HEV Mark IV suit.
The resonance cascade didn't happen... But Gordon did get temporarily suspended for leaving Sector C, wandering aimlessly, and sneaking into the administrator's office.
I'll be honest it's pretty strange to see black Mesa fully cleaned up and running as it would any other day. It was pretty anticlimactic, but part of me enjoyed seeing it like this. Makes you wonder what the game could have been like had the resonance cascade never happened.
I always wanted to see Black Mesa in all it's Glory, Without Headcrabs and Monsters, something like a Work Simulator, thanks, now at least i can stay in peace ❤
I remember reading somewhere that a fan believes the reason why happenstance forced Gordon to wake up late was because a prodigy like Gordon Freeman would recognize the error in the study before it ever took place. He would have made an advocacy play that would have changed the effect of the experiment, or made a suggestion that would have cancelled the experiment all together. Him being late was instrumental in having the resonance cascade occur. It can only be assumed someone willed it so that Gordon wouldn't arrive early, and yet another safe measure that should have been in place never came to be.

Yeah, I've been there, it's 2:30 on a Friday, work is pretty much done, end up wondering around the facility going places you really don't belong, going up and down stairs, walking across the cat walk, talking to everyone else that are bored out of their minds.
you know...since Gordon was late they made a lot of last minute tweaks, so if Gordon had just come on time they may have succeeded or failed without a cascade
I was expecting something like: "Well done, the experiment shows some interesting results to be studied but... We need to try another frecuency next time."
Every time I play the test chamber scene, there's always a small part of my mind that goes "This time, it'll go right. This time, there won't be a resonance cascade, the test will go normally, and I'll just go back to my office." Now I can finally know what it would look like if that actually happened.
This may sound weird, but I always loved the aesthetics of Black Mesa, and simply taking a walk around the facility is cool. I like it probably like it because of the liminal space style
Honestly this makes me wish for mods, both singleplayer and maybe even some that have online capabilities, where you can walk through the whole of Black Mesa for HL1, and maybe even walk through much of City-17 pre-combine
With the Black Mesa speedrun (at time of writing) being 35 minutes, 45 seconds, walking though a completely functional building without issues is somehow comparable to "whatever black magic Speedrun Gordon does."
Just another casual thirsday at work, arguing about chair colors. These people would never expect that they just avoided the end of the world scenario and living hell by a hair, just because they happen to be in a parallel timeline.
Xen doesn't invade, meaning Gordon doesn't kill the Nihilith, which means the Combine don't conquer Xen, and that means no Combine invasion of our universe.
This is basically when you're not in work but you come in to help with one thing that takes 30 seconds, then you just kind of explore the building going places you aren't supposed to but because you're in employee uniform with your ID showing no one questions you.
The ending should be like alternative ending of breaking bad. Gordon go sleep just to wake up few hours later from nighmare, and tell his wife about Resonance Cascade, aliens and how he "saved" the world
What the Pre-Disaster levels really need in my opinion is a quest, like maybe after the experiment you have some stuff to do here and there and end up traversing the whole facility all the way to the Lambda labs in the process
There was quests in one the the Maps i showed off Which is why that one scientist was sparking, that was to let you know they have a quest for you to do

I think this is a pretty interesting exercise in level design. A lot of games feature environments set after some sort of disaster or significant upheaval, so the thought of visualizing what the spaces the player has to traverse would look like under what'd constitute "normal circumstances" is cool
I'm excited to see what all the new models in BMCE could bring to these mod's! Especially the loads of new variation to office workers. Considering the loads of people in the office complex part of this mod it would be really cool

So, if this mod is about nothing going wrong during Day Zero, does that mean Gordon will have to go through a uneventful ride in the tram, all the way to Sector Lambda and then jump into Xen in order to help with maintenance or something? I wonder if Nihilanth will make an appearance at the end regardless, or maybe he will just leave hidden traces of his presence instead.

This just needs some custom dialogue and scenes of everyone cheering that the experiment went well and congratulating Gordon on his good work despite being late that day. Perhaps they could reveal to us a little about what they wanted to achieve with the experiment and what they planned to do in the end with the sample readings. A last scene with Gordon going to a bar with Barney to finally have that beer would be the perfect ending to this mod.
On the other hand, this could be "Black Mesa. One day before disaster" and we get to see a typical experiment that Gordon and the team he's in performs.
I love the detail during the experiment, the scientist never says: "Overhead capacitors to 105%", which eventually is what causes the Resonance cascade to occur
Showing up late for work just so he can wear a powered hazard suit and push a button, then wander around the facility aimlessly. You can see Gordon's MIT education really pays for itself

Aside for how good looking black Mesa is in its shape before a resonance cascade, or rather no resonance cascade at all in this scenario. I have always wondered how the world would proceed now, and how black mesa’s work would greatly benefit human kind and the world to expand in various areas of science and projects
I mean they would Probably not benefit the entirety of Humankind but rather the U.S. Government Only since its a Top Secret Research Laboratory set up by the Government. The teleportation Tech would by used by the United States Military for War and Killing rather the for Peaceful Use.

Well... I saw literally hundreds of HL mods. A bizzare ones.. But that's the best of them 😅 I wish someone will eventually make something like a detective quest out of this maps! Like if Gordon would hit the emergency switch just in a right time and then will try to find out who was in charge of cascade resonance and later events!
God, having played Black Mesa and Half-Life, these pre-disaster maps are oddly uncanny to me. Everything's brighter, friendlier, and cleaner. Things not going wrong is a "well duh" moment, but it still feels wrong, especially since there's still dialogue that foreshadows Black Mesa's demise.
Little thing I picked up on is that the Resonance Cascade was completely preventable. In Half Life Decay, just after the Resonance Cascade one of the scientists states that the Dampening Fields had failed, and that someone should have noticed a discrepancy in the displacement flow indicators. Sure enough during the experiment "Scientist #1" notices a "small discrepancy" however, he chooses to continue. Had Scientist #1 chose to stop things right then and there, no Resonance Cascade. Another thing to note, the voice line in which scientist #1 notices the discrepancy is absent in this mod, meaning that in our little alt timeline here, the dampening fields held.
If it wasn't for the resonance cascade, I'd love to work in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Their cafeteria options are rather enticing, along with their on site dormitories. Sure, some of the research personnel are rather pretentious and rude, but I could live with that.
(In this new timeline after the resonance cascade never happened) Caroline and breen becomes best friends and continues working at both black mesa and aperture science together. They merge both of the businesses togther turning it inot blapeture mesa. The combine never invaded and the world was in peace. City 17 and ravenholm were never raided. Collete and gordon are now married and have kids of their own. Chell was released from aperture science and vecomes friends with gordon and becomes a godmother to alyx.

Every time I play the test chamber scene, there's always a small part of my mind that goes "This time, it'll go right. This time, there won't be a resonance cascade, the test will go normally, and I'll just go back to my office." Now I can finally know what it would look like if that actually happened.
This may sound weird, but I always loved the aesthetics of Black Mesa, and simply taking a walk around the facility is cool. I like it probably like it because of the liminal space style

Honestly this makes me wish for mods, both singleplayer and maybe even some that have online capabilities, where you can walk through the whole of Black Mesa for HL1, and maybe even walk through much of City-17 pre-combine
There's actually already a map of pre-Combine City 17 in GMod (plus some other areas) so that's entirely possible
With the Black Mesa speedrun (at time of writing) being 35 minutes, 45 seconds, walking though a completely functional building without issues is somehow comparable to "whatever black magic Speedrun Gordon does."

This is basically when you're not in work but you come in to help with one thing that takes 30 seconds, then you just kind of explore the building going places you aren't supposed to but because you're in employee uniform with your ID showing no one questions you.
The ending should be like alternative ending of breaking bad. Gordon go sleep just to wake up few hours later from nighmare, and tell his wife about Resonance Cascade, aliens and how he "saved" the world
What the Pre-Disaster levels really need in my opinion is a quest, like maybe after the experiment you have some stuff to do here and there and end up traversing the whole facility all the way to the Lambda labs in the process
There was quests in one the the Maps i showed off
Which is why that one scientist was sparking, that was to let you know they have a quest for you to do

I think this is a pretty interesting exercise in level design. A lot of games feature environments set after some sort of disaster or significant upheaval, so the thought of visualizing what the spaces the player has to traverse would look like under what'd constitute "normal circumstances" is cool
This is so awesome. I'd like to see this simulating what Gordon does around Black Mesa with missions and stuff.

So, if this mod is about nothing going wrong during Day Zero, does that mean Gordon will have to go through a uneventful ride in the tram, all the way to Sector Lambda and then jump into Xen in order to help with maintenance or something?
I wonder if Nihilanth will make an appearance at the end regardless, or maybe he will just leave hidden traces of his presence instead.
@@TheDragShot That would be interesting, from what I've seen a lot of areas are still WIP and we haven't really got there yet, I do wonder how they'll improve upon them in the future. I just hope it won't be abandoned or anything
This just needs some custom dialogue and scenes of everyone cheering that the experiment went well and congratulating Gordon on his good work despite being late that day. Perhaps they could reveal to us a little about what they wanted to achieve with the experiment and what they planned to do in the end with the sample readings. A last scene with Gordon going to a bar with Barney to finally have that beer would be the perfect ending to this mod.
On the other hand, this could be "Black Mesa. One day before disaster" and we get to see a typical experiment that Gordon and the team he's in performs.

Aside for how good looking black Mesa is in its shape before a resonance cascade, or rather no resonance cascade at all in this scenario. I have always wondered how the world would proceed now, and how black mesa’s work would greatly benefit human kind and the world to expand in various areas of science and projects
I mean they would Probably not benefit the entirety of Humankind but rather the U.S. Government Only since its a Top Secret Research Laboratory set up by the Government.
The teleportation Tech would by used by the United States Military for War and Killing rather the for Peaceful Use.

God, having played Black Mesa and Half-Life, these pre-disaster maps are oddly uncanny to me. Everything's brighter, friendlier, and cleaner. Things not going wrong is a "well duh" moment, but it still feels wrong, especially since there's still dialogue that foreshadows Black Mesa's demise.
Mostly due to the Maps Intending to be Before the Disaster

Little thing I picked up on is that the Resonance Cascade was completely preventable. In Half Life Decay, just after the Resonance Cascade one of the scientists states that the Dampening Fields had failed, and that someone should have noticed a discrepancy in the displacement flow indicators. Sure enough during the experiment "Scientist #1" notices a "small discrepancy" however, he chooses to continue.
Had Scientist #1 chose to stop things right then and there, no Resonance Cascade. Another thing to note, the voice line in which scientist #1 notices the discrepancy is absent in this mod, meaning that in our little alt timeline here, the dampening fields held.
Also they completely ignored standard safety Precautions and set the Anti-Mass Spectrometer to 105% which they don't do in this AU

If it wasn't for the resonance cascade, I'd love to work in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Their cafeteria options are rather enticing, along with their on site dormitories. Sure, some of the research personnel are rather pretentious and rude, but I could live with that.
I like to think this is some butterfly effect because in this Gordon has retinal access.
(In this new timeline after the resonance cascade never happened)
Caroline and breen becomes best friends and continues working at both black mesa and aperture science together. They merge both of the businesses togther turning it inot blapeture mesa. The combine never invaded and the world was in peace. City 17 and ravenholm were never raided. Collete and gordon are now married and have kids of their own.
Chell was released from aperture science and vecomes friends with gordon and becomes a godmother to alyx.
We should make an Entire Fanfic on this!
