- I headed over to Jimmy at Velo Bavarian to set up some tubeless tyres on my Argon 18 Dark Matter. Here's Jimmy's tips:

The following companies (that you'll see in my content) support me either financially or with free stuff, so huge thanks to these guys for helping me with the challenges I take on:
Argon 18, Enve, Le Col, Lazer Helmets, Shimano, Schwalbe Tires, Sungod Eyewear, Tailfin Cycling, Styrkr, Exposure Lights, Garmin, Fox and products from Saddleback brands.
I use the same Schwalbe Overland tyre for the Dirty Reiver 200km and the Frontier 300 this year. Great tyre rolloing on the road and grippy on the gravel. Plus no punctures 👌
They’re fantastic aren’t they? I’ve been so impressed with them as well
SILCA has a YT video ("Answered: Your Top 5 Selected Tubeless Tire Fail Questions") where they talk about prepping & maintaining your _valve cores_ so they do not become clogged.
That’s a very useful video for some people who have commented on here to watch for sure. They do a great job in providing helpful content
@@ChrisHallRides yeah, they're bona fide bike _nerds_ over there, in a good way
The TLDW on that: remove the valve core and apply a small amount of chain oil to the valve core threads.
@@redkeyspoke they don't recommend chain oil. Silca mentioned two other types of specialized products: Syner-G or Synergetic
@@malcontent_1 Well, those are wet chain lubes, more or less. I was trying to avoid being overly pedantic, though I suppose the tungsten disulfide may be a necessary ingredient. 🤷♂️
The silca sealant is spectacular! I just got my first puncture I needed to plug after 9 months & 3012 miles with 30mm gp5000 str's! Usually I hear a noise & find a little spray on my frame after I get home!
It’s so so good isn’t it!?
Totally agree with "comfort is fast" but, robust is also fast, for example if your tires are "racy" but prone to punctures you need to add in the time for flat repairs to your riding time.
You’re completely right there too! I’d rather a tougher tyre than having to deal with fixing issues
Black tires look great. I'm still using tubes on my bikes. Tubeless setup looks easy after watching.
Thanks for watching!
Big fan of Silca sealant. It cleans out nicely too when you want to replace your sealant after a year or so. Plus the replenisher does go through the valve using the little replenisher bottle (or perhaps even a syringe, I imagine)
Yeah exactly the replenisher is absolutely fine to go through the valve and it works fantastic :)
Chris: Reading out Sica Sealant Bottle Text in front of a MUC OFF shelf.
Cam to Jimmy.
Jimmy: "Yeah, it is the best. Sometimes I use A DIFFERENT brand for offroad stuff"
I wonder which brand this might be! 😅
Luv it! 😅
hahaha
Thanks Chris , and Jimmy...I brought my new tires to my LBS to install , using this sealant .I told them about the no syringe , through the valve ....and they did it anyway .Ruined my valves , I am about to replace everything , months later....yeah ,I'll do it myself from now on !!
Ahh thats so frustrating!
@@ChrisHallRides yes. A lesson in a lesson wrapped in knowledge ..
I use Silca and I can confirm it seals very well. Its the only sealant that works at road tire pressures too.
Totally agree with you there!
Bike looks good with the black side wall too👍 I did laugh out load with the muc off stand shining brightly, probably wondering to itself if it was getting a mention in the roll call of good sealant👍
@@smoore5540 😂 personally I don’t like the muc off sealant. Each to their own and I know they offer a lot of support for bike shops but they’re not for me
@@ChrisHallRides aye, I've used it in the past and the peatys one with the bits in with no issues, but I can see how you need something you can trust if out in thd middle of no ware on one of your adventures 👍🚴♀️🏴
Ah, now I know what the TLE logo is for👍
Black = more comfort 😉
The big VB sign on the wall. What does it stand for? I lived in a small town in Denmark when I was a boy and vb was the closest big soccer club.
Thats cool! Stands for Velo Bavarian, which is the shop: velobavarian.co.uk/
Noticing that red tape is not pink lettered tape i wonder what tape that is? Its opaque, witch i hear that is better than clear and also way better than tape with branding printed on it.
It's Enve's own rim tape. :)
@@ChrisHallRides Thank you. Enve makes great stuff. I have a bunch of parts from them I am really happy with. They are also great to deal with if the amazing parts ever fail. 🙌
I prefer to seat tyre before adding sealant, to avoid those messy disasters...
If you inject sealant through the valve, it clogs up the valve. It even says on the bottle not to inject it through the valve :)
Silca sealant you can’t put through the valve
Depends. If you cant seat the tire without sealant and dont have a compressor, you can add the sealant to help the initial seating. Its how i've done all my road tires without a compressor
@@grvl307 you remove the valve stem
@@hutchy_4297 I know. I've been riding tubeless on all my bikes for 6 years.. Silca will clog up the valve without the core as well. As I said: it even says on the Silca bottle not to inject the sealant through the valve. They have good reason to say that. With Silca (and some other sealants) , you need to remove the valve core every few weeks and clean it otherwise it will still become clogged up. Good sealant will seal any opening...
anyone pouring sealant in the tire before they seat the bead is not worth listening to
you have to pour the sealant in when you use Silca sealant. So probably worth listening to that advice: silca.cc/blogs/silca/tubeless-sealant-installation
@@ChrisHallRides use orange seal, the silca stuff is basically race sealant it seals too good for every day use
@@hutchy_4297 why wouldn’t you want a sealant that seals too good? 😅
@@hutchy_4297that makes no sense, it’s like saying I won’t you wireless shifting because it’s shifts way to good 😂
@@leestephenson4083 because it causes valve stem issues that I don't need. I haven't had to fix a roadside flat since 2021 with orange seal, and it requires less maintenance. Trust me if I was getting flats that orange seal couldn't manage I would switch but for me I just don't need it
