The crazy part is, the real story of Desmond Doss during the war was even more crazy than it appeared on screen. They had to nerf this man because it would have appeared to unrealistic to the audience. What an amazing film.

There is a documentary about Desmond called "The Conscientious Objector". The reason there was never a movie before this is because Desmond was very humble. Hollywood had pursued the story since the 1950's but Desmond left it to his church and once he passed they finally approved telling his story. Plus there are a number of other Andrew Garfield movies that highlight his incredible acting abilities "Tick Tick Boom", "Silence", "Breathe", "Boy A", "The Social Network" to name a few.

One of my favorite professors in college said something on day 1 of class that I'll never forget. He was teaching a class on the history of war, and he said that we would be discussing and learning about real events, and not censoring anything or holding back at all when it came to the gristly details, "because those men went through it for real, and we owe it to them to teach what really happened, no matter how uncomfortable." It's important that we talk and learn about the utter hell that people went though, because we owe it to them to not let their experience be forgotten.
History isn't meant to be pretty and presented nicely with glitter and a neat bow. All aspects need to be taught, no matter how bad, because it happened, and we don't want to forget, or risk it happening again.

After I watched this movie I went down a Desmond Doss rabbit hole. This man was incredible and the movie only shows a small portion of the incredible things he did. After he kicked away the grenades and was injured they were carrying him on a stretcher when another grenade near by went off. This man ROLLED OFF THE STRETCHER so that they could use it for another soldier. Due to his injuries he lived the rest of his life with only 1 lung. He built his house WITH ONLY ONE LUNG. I have zero excuses for anything.

My dad served 32 years active duty army in the cavalry he served in Panama and Honduras and Germany when the Berlin wall came down. He served in the 1st gulf war and did 4 more tours the second invasion of Iraq and he had PTSD bad I remember thunder storms were horrible one time he jumped off the couch and dove on the ground yelling where's my rifle. And one time driving down the road and he pulls the emergency brake and yells sniper and takes cover behind the car. It was really sad to see because he is the strongest person I've ever met. In some significant ways, this excellent true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there are some things that were changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor in both, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened.

The character “Smitty” Ryker was created for the film. The man at the end credit speaking about how he doubted Doss, and the irony of it was that he was saved by him was the actual Captain Jack Glover as portrayed by Sam Worthington and not Vince Vaughn’s Sargent Howell.

Desmond is who we *should* be aspiring to be. Not everyone can follow his commitment to pacifism, maybe not even in his incredible belief in the true path Jesus sets before us - but his commitment to making the world a better place, and his commitment to duty , and to his fellow man, is something we can all reach for. More of us need to follow Desmond's example - live your life in a way that makes the world a better place for everyone.
RE movies you can only watch once - oh my god yes. There are a number that are my similar list - "watch these, but not with me thanks, I've already been there, and I can't watch it again."

Thomas Doss (the father) was in WW1 he severed in the battle of Belleau Wood. A 26 day long battle that was almost daily hand to hand combat. This was the battle that the Marines were given their nickname Devl Dogs by the Greman Army because they fought so fiercely and refused to retreat even though both the British and French had chosen to retreat. So Desmond's father had lived through hell, probably suffered from both PTSD and survivor's guilt.
This movie compresses time. By the time Hacksaw ridge Desmond had been in 3 beach assaults. His company knew of his selfless heroic attitude long before Hacksaw. Yes Mel Gibson didn't show some of Doss's action because as he said " the audience would think it was all Hollywood Make-Believe" what Doss did. Was after being wounded and being carried out on the litter. The litter crew came under heavy fire. They took cover. Doss spotted a wounded soldier out in the open. Rolled off the litter, dryg himself to the wounded soldier and started giving him treatment. Doss refused to get back on the litter until the other soldier was carried out first.

  • @itt23r
    @itt23r Год назад +3

FURY and HACKSAW RIDGE seem to have been made in direct response to SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and to counter the heinous message of that movie.
In the fictitious FURY the Norman character is set up to be the polar opposite of the Upham character of SPR. So where Upham at the end of the movie kills the German soldier in cold blood to show that he has finally learned that to be successful in war you have to abandon your morality, Norman however, never compromises. And as a result the author of the story depicts Norman as the only one who survives. And although the others in his crew, having succumbed to the tempations of war don't make it, they do however, find the redemption they desire by sacrificing themselves for their fellow soldiers.
It is a theme in FURY but Mel Gibson makes it much clearer with his decision to bring Desmond Doss's story to the big screen. Therein we see in this true story how much one man can accomplish if he hangs onto his integrity no matter how much temptation there may be to compromise on it. And it is also testimony to the power of faith as what he did was actually a collaborative effort of God and man. No one could have done what he did on their own. And truthfully no one would have even attempted it without faith.
Side notes. The Navy counted over 100 people saved by Doss, But humble Doss only owned up to 50 so when they awarded the medal they compromised reducing officially count to 75. It is also my understanding that in that final assault after Doss's prayer no allied soldier died. And the reason yu've not heard of Doss is likely because he was opposed to anyone making a movie of him. So it wasn't until after he died that his story could be told.
For another great movie about a conscientious objector who ended up winning the congressional medal of honor take a look at the Academy Award winner for best picture in 1941, SEARGENT YORK starring Gary Cooper. It is not as gory as HACKSAW and it is a little hokey in parts. But it still holds up as a good watch detailing the heroics of the most decorated allied soldier of WWI.

Hollywood sent another moh awardee to visit doss in the late 50's. Audie Murphy the most decorated soldier of ww2 showed, put out Hollywood's offer of 50,000 for the rights to his story. Doss cordially turned the offer down.
A documentary the conscientious objector was made in 2004. It is outstanding! Interviews with men who served with doss and were astounded by his lack of fear and continued bravery in going out to treat and drag the wounded back to safety. He was awarded two bronze stars with v device for valor in the battles to retake guam and then the Philippines.the descriptions of how they fought to stay alive and protect each other brought up emotions that had been buried for 60 years. Stacking dead comrades like cordwood, walking through blood pools up to their ankles. The one veteran said he still had nightmares about that.Doss said what he did was to the glory of God, it wasn't his to sell.

The irony is that if Doss at any time had compromised his belief and used his rifle on top of Hacksaw Ridge he would’ve become a target and died. Thus not being able to save the lives he did!

4:35 their dad is a veteran of the First World War. WWI was… well, as war goes, awful. New technologies advanced the work of death by leaps and bounds. In WWI you had horse drawn cannon and cavalry going up against tanks and machine guns. It was just broken. And then add fire, gas, bombs, mortars, and near constant machine gun fire.
Their dad has major PTSD, but at the time nobody understood PTSD and just called it “shell shock.” If you get a minute look up some videos of actual people with shell shock. They aren’t even themselves anymore. It literally destroys them.
That’s why their dad is the way he is.

Another great war film from Pacific is Terence Malicki's The Thin Red Line (1998) and to see something completely different view from WWII: Das Boot (1981) is phenomenal war film. Its not about heroism. Its about trying to survive in the most claustrophobic environment you can imagine. The haunting soundtrack, still gives me goose bumps.

I love this reaction, this is definitely one of the best to this movie, and since it impressed you so much here is the information that Desmond Doss was one of 3 Americans who served out of patriotism and refused to touch a gun for reasons of faith (the other two were named Thomas William Bennett and Joseph Guy LaPointe Jr.).

God bless Desmond Doss and his family! God bless all the courageous veterans with nerves of steel who risked everything and selflessly sacrificed so much to protect our countries and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today! God bless all the souls - military and civilian - that we have lost in times of war! God bless America! God bless us all and grant us peace!

Anotger movie about a congessional medal of honor winner is sgt york, its incredably accurate about his story, it was made in the 60s and is in black and white so no awesome effects but his family insisted on the movie being as accurate as possible, he comes from jamestown tennessee which is 21 miles from where i live, thw road is so winding 21 milwa takea an hour to drive, but no reactions on yourtube about that movie, cause hacksaw ridge is so popular, but i cabt reccond you doing a reaction to enough its so amazing
