I adore the Sea Ranch property. My spouse and I often stayed at the Lodge on our yearly drive from Seattle to San Francisco. I _love_ this house, it embraces the original intention for the homes being one with nature and the simplicity is absolutely stunning.
I love your play with space. The idea of keeping you interior feeling cozy/secure but at the same time show the openness/vastness of nature is wonderful. Same with choosing materials that almost seamlessly brings you into nature or brings nature to you. Not to mention working with the landscape. It almost feels like every room you enter, you’re transported to another land. It feels like you’re created a harmonious balance between nature and structure. You’re right, without a thought, it looks simple in design. Generally, those are the hardest to create. Fantastic job🙏 and thank you for sharing your home with us.

This is the second Sea Ranch home you have featured recently, and I love this one as much as the first. The whole concept of this community is so wonderful...keep it as friendly to nature as possible and no jarring colors or monstrous-big homes in the forest. I would just love to live here, but I am imagining it is out of my price range. However, bravo to the residents who have kept the original designer's ideas and ideals alive and well.
I'm always checking out Sea Ranch prices on Zillow. The ones in the forest aren't expensive by California standards, but the thought of getting fire insurance worries me.
What a very sympathetic and well articulated architect. The approach to use materials that were available at that time make it a gorgeous interior. Really enjoy the timber cladding inside. Definitely going to take some inspiration for my current timber home in planning from this one :)
Spectacular. This project is incredibly beautiful. Love the way the inside wooden frame of the house is smooth and ligh. Then appears delicately wrapped up in the soft, green, beaucolic skin of forest.
I’ve been to Sea Ranch ages ago and have very fond memories of my stay there. Breathtaking views and outstanding natural beauty. Probably, it’s now all gentrified and turned into luxury properties. Nice house though
TSR looks just like it did in the past, even if the people might be changing to a younger, more affluent demographic - like most of the Bay Area. The design committee is super strict on what can be built (2400sqft max limit, materials use, design, etc) and it does a great job limiting gaudy out of place design.

Large roof overhangs of over 2 or 3 feet add beauty to homes and provides protection for doors, windows and siding from rain and water damage. Short roof overhangs may sve a few dollars but they make the house more vunerble to moisture damage.
A rain forest is the perfect place for a home constructed out of wood. No doubt, after designing many homes for others I'm glad to see the Architect was able to design and build the perfect retreat for herself.
Dad feelings about a complete lack of a roof overhang to keep the rain off the siding intensifies. Must ignore flat roof. Must. Huge appreciation for number of large, well placed windows intensifies. I have a small home in a very similar setting. It is a game changer for the betterment of your mental health. Be well.
A gorgeous house and setting. I have been to Sea Ranch, an hour's drive south of me. Sea Ranch is great for second homes and vacations, but the "clean look" of the architecture enforced by many rules (e.g., cannot park onn the street) means you have to spend alot of time and effort keeping everything very orderly and much hidden. Imagine an empty coffee cup, your rain jacket, or a few magazines in this house and it will look cluttered, let alone a shed for your firewood or small boat on a trailer. Nice to look at, may be for some, but not my choice for long term living.
There is something very cool about combining natural wood with these industrial black steel finishes. Its a good combo but I see it A LOT. On this channel, alone, we probably saw dozens of such projects. I like this project for other stuff too like the use of double volume and large windows near the stairs and framing of the trees, that definitely make this cabin fit right in with its surroundings. And the kitchen looks sleek, which is rare to see in these rustic, smaller cabins. And there are few very cozy sitting nooks. So, i like the overall feel of this - nothing too pioneering but everything works and fits.
California! While many people think of our state as being a mass of concrete and spaghetti arterials nothing can be farther from the truth! Not many people outside CA know that there is 700 plus miles of wild and rugged beautiful Coastline from the Central Coast of Monterey Bay Northwards past SanFrancisco all the way up to the Oregon Border! The drive past Sea Ranch up that vast craggy Coastline is one of the most beautiful stretches of road on the planet. Says the guy that’s only driven the coastlines of 3 different continents! The State is vast. In fact only 10 % of the States 39 million inhabitants live in the roughly 20,000 square miles North of the heavily populated regions of the SF Bay Area and Greater Sacramento! Oh and that’s a lovely home by the way haha
Beautiful home. But who wants to wash all those giant windows? I live in a beautiful cabin in the middle of a forest and I can tell you that keeping my big windows clean is a real pain in the butt. That and the birds keep hitting them which not only maims or kills the bird but also leaves splat marks on the windows. I've tried everything to scare the birds away from the windows but as the sunshine moves throughout the day so do the reflections so it's an endless battle. I once had a male bird attack one of my windows repeatedly in the spring because he thought his reflection was a rival. I tried everything to keep him away but in the end I had to cover the window from the outside so he couldn't see his reflection until mating season was over. None of the other windows were an issue. Just the one.
Does anyone know the type/name of the cantilever arm wall lamp at approximately 3 mins 10 seconds in? I've tried image searches but can't seem to track it down. Thank you.
Wonderful interior. Good luck with fire. Perhaps Sea Ranch could up date it's interpretation of nature-first living to reflect the importance of fire for healthy coast redwood forests.
Beautiful home, but my god, could she be more pretentious. And all those "we know what's best for you" rules. Sea Ranch was (and still is) VERY controversial, as it was basically wealthy people buying up all that "peace and tranquility" and trying to shut everyone else out. For example, they had to be forced (by legal action) to allow public beach access. This is a style of life only available to rich people.
@@carolina92861 Well, Sea Ranch is 150 miles from San Francisco. The nearest town with more than a few hundred people is 80 miles away, and the border with Mexico is over 800 miles away. My point? It doesn’t come up much but I imagine they would have zero tolerance for it.
The concept is great but the logic and reality is that building a house under the canopy of large forest trees is catastrophic in many ways. Forest nature is very destructive and the ultimate result is destruction of property and possibly life itself.
If you complain about the more human occupied landscape why you sit your self in the nature? You should stay in the human landscape and go to the nature landscape only for walk, hiking and short stay . Your nice talking is bs! You brought your garbage with you. Nice house but you did and do damages to the area anyway. Indeed, nice area for human staying 😅

That’s the perspective I was looking for. I see many people talking about how good architecturally this project is, but is clearly missing the fact of the impact in the ecosystem. An architecture project it’s not only about the human comfort and the pure art of construction, it HAS to implement issues as the enviroment, the surroundings and the impact in the land. I really encourage people to think about these kind of things when judging a project!
