I totally understand where this song is coming from. You have your guard up all the time even though you're now in a good place. It's hard to just let go of the past and move on. It's a part of you even though it was bad.

A memory can be both curse and blessing, I loved a girl since 1974, through the years we kept in touch, she went from one abusive man to the next, finally marrying an abusive alcoholic, around 2004 we spoke daily on the phone, mostly about spirituality, once she married I stopped calling her, we reconnected in 2016, after talking to her I noticed she no longer exhibted any sense of spirituality, allowing years of abuse changed the girl I loved my whole life, living with a "sick" man infected her I the scary part is she was oblivious to this change.
