The contemplative movement traces its roots back to the fourth century Desert Fathers. They were the ones who first promoted the mantra as a prayer tool. The meditation practices and rules for living of these earliest Christian monks bear strong similarity to those of their Hindu and Buddhist renunciate brethren several kingdoms to the East ... the meditative techniques they adopted for finding their God suggest either a borrowing from the East or a spontaneous rediscovery....

*Let miracles replace all grievances.* 1. Perhaps it is not yet quite clear to you that each decision that you make is one between a grievance and a miracle. ²Each grievance stands like a dark shield of hate before the miracle it would conceal. ³And as you raise it up before your eyes, you will not see the miracle beyond. ⁴Yet all the while it waits for you in light, but you behold your grievances instead. 2. Today we go beyond the grievances, to look upon the miracle instead. ²We will reverse the way you see by not allowing sight to stop before it sees. ³We will not wait before the shield of hate, but lay it down and gently lift our eyes in silence to behold the Son of God. 3. He waits for you behind your grievances, and as you lay them down he will appear in shining light where each one stood before. ²For every grievance is a block to sight, and as it lifts you see the Son of God where he has always been. ³He stands in light, but you were in the dark. ⁴Each grievance made the darkness deeper, and you could not see. 4. Today we will attempt to see God’s Son. ²We will not let ourselves be blind to him; we will not look upon our grievances. ³So is the seeing of the world reversed, as we look out toward truth, away from fear. ⁴We will select one person you have used as target for your grievances, and lay the grievances aside and look at him. ⁵Someone, perhaps, you fear and even hate; someone you think you love who angered you; someone you call a friend, but whom you see as difficult at times or hard to please, demanding, irritating or untrue to the ideal he should accept as his, according to the role you set for him. 5. You know the one to choose; his name has crossed your mind already. ²He will be the one of whom we ask God’s Son be shown to you. ³Through seeing him behind the grievances that you have held against him, you will learn that what lay hidden while you saw him not is there in everyone, and can be seen. ⁴He who was enemy is more than friend when he is freed to take the holy role the Holy Spirit has assigned to him. ⁵Let him be savior unto you today. ⁶Such is his role in God your Father’s plan. 6. Our longer practice periods today will see him in this role. ²You will attempt to hold him in your mind, first as you now consider him. ³You will review his faults, the difficulties you have had with him, the pain he caused you, his neglect, and all the little and the larger hurts he gave. ⁴You will regard his body with its flaws and better points as well, and you will think of his mistakes and even of his “sins.” 7. Then let us ask of Him Who knows this Son of God in his reality and truth, that we may look on him a different way, and see our savior shining in the light of true forgiveness, given unto us. ²We ask Him in the holy Name of God and of His Son, as holy as Himself: _³Let me behold my savior in this one You have appointed as the one for me to ask to lead me to the holy light in which he stands, that I may join with him._ ⁴The body’s eyes are closed, and as you think of him who grieved you, let your mind be shown the light in him beyond your grievances. 8. What you have asked for cannot be denied. ²Your savior has been waiting long for this. ³He would be free, and make his freedom yours. ⁴The Holy Spirit leans from him to you, seeing no separation in God’s Son. ⁵And what you see through Him will free you both. ⁶Be very quiet now, and look upon your shining savior. ⁷No dark grievances obscure the sight of him. ⁸You have allowed the Holy Spirit to express through him the role God gave Him that you might be saved. 9. God thanks you for these quiet times today in which you laid your images aside, and looked upon the miracle of love the Holy Spirit showed you in their place. ²The world and Heaven join in thanking you, for not one Thought of God but must rejoice as you are saved, and all the world with you. 10. We will remember this throughout the day, and take the role assigned to us as part of God’s salvation plan, and not our own. ²Temptation falls away when we allow each one we meet to save us, and refuse to hide his light behind our grievances. ³To everyone you meet, and to the ones you think of or remember from the past, allow the role of savior to be given, that you may share it with him. ⁴For you both, and all the sightless ones as well, we pray: _⁵Let miracles replace all grievances._ A Course In Miracles Author: Jesus Christ thru a Scribe
I have read many who seem to believe that there existed no tradition or usage of contemplative prayer within the Jewish/Christian Tradition prior to the Desert Fathers and that we must look to the East to trace the roots of the practice. However, I have come to see a great deal of the contemplative attitude toward prayer and worship in some of the Old Testament Saints, namely Moses and Elijah. I don't think it is necessary to look to the pagan East or to the minds of Hindus, Buddhists and Daoists etc. to find a paradigm of contemplative prayer which seeks after the Will and the Face of Almighty God.
Today's Contemplative Prayer was borrowed from the ancient Vedic traditions of India where "Mantras (repetitive words or sounds) are used to invoke beings in the higher realms." (Marhesh Yogi) He also said, "Emptying the mind is the path to god and the true-self." Jesus said, "Use not vain repetition as the heathen do..." (Matt.6:7) C.P. seeks an empty mind: true Christianity seeks the Mind of Christ. See ch.26 of "SATAN...this is going to hurt!" by Kole Eremos for much more on this subject.

“We should not hesitate to take the fruit of the age-old wisdom of the East and capture it for Christ. Indeed, those of us who are in ministry should make the necessary effort to acquaint ourselves with as many of these Eastern techniques as possible… Many Christians have been greatly helped by Yoga, Zen, T.M. and similar practices.“ (Thomas Keating) That “age-old wisdom of the East” needs to be “PULLED DOWN BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD.” (2Cor.10:4) - Not “captured for Christ.”(Kole Eremos) AMEN!
Contemplative Spirituality: A system that uses ancient mystical practices to induce altered states of consciousness (the silence) and is rooted in mysticism and the occult, but often wrapped in Christian terminology. The premise of contemplative spirituality is pantheistic (God is all) and panentheistic (God is in all). Common terms used for this movement are "spiritual formation," "the silence," "the stillness," "ancient-wisdom," "spiritual disciplines," and many others.
ken rodway read about the contemplative tradition in Christianity. St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa de Avila, The Cloud of Unknowing, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, Julian of Norwich. Only a lack of knowledge would label this traditional practice as non-Christian.
Not. It is derived from the 14th century Christian text: "The Cloud Of Unknowing." Emptying the mind of that which is "NOT" of God brother..you manipulate the language and intent. The Sacred Word is only introduced when the mind is distracted or tempted to stray from God toward the things that are not of God. It is not used as you associate it above; Maresh Yogi. Empty mind? It is stilling the mind..emptying as in "cleansing the Temple" as Jesus did. No disrespect, but you are misinformed. Fear.
Really? What authority warns us of such unwary means Ken? As far as I know, "By their fruits they shall be known." Said the greatest Authority. Define, "true believers." Seems to me Christ instructed contemplative prayer, "Pray to your Father in Secret," but before this, Holy Spirit informs us, "Be still, and know that I am God." These teachings are the ground of contemplative prayer. Are you saying Keating is "deceitful?" He does not "appear" to be genuine, loving and sincere. He is. And you?
Fr. Mike Manning needs to take his own advice and "shut up." His comments are inane and repetitive. He interrupts Fr. Keating far too much. If he would just let us listen to Fr. Keating, who is a very wise person, it would be much better. I don't get the sense that Fr. Manning knows anything about contemplation!
Please Beware: Contemplative/Centering prayer, Zen, Kundalini techniques etc. are actually “the means by which unwary Christians (true believers) are being drawn into a labyrinth of New-Age (Eastern) mysticism, pagan philosophies and occult bondage.” The subtle deceitfulness of people promoting such practices lies in the fact that they appear so genuine, loving and sincere. However, I believe that one day we will all come to recognize what the scriptures already proclaim. (See 2Cor.11:13-15)
We should love Jesus Christ if we want call ourselves Christians. I do not hear any word about our Lord from Father Keating's mouths however wise and beautiful they sound. New Age ?
+jaroslaw slowinski Doesn't Christ tell us to Love the Lord our God and to Love our neighbour? He acted as a gateway to an awareness and understanding of the divine, Its reality and Its meaning.
They are talking about the contemplative aspect of Christianity. Jesus not be brought into it. Jesus is there to help us, but we shouldn't cry wolf all the time.
