    Father Keating's work is a breath of fresh air. For those of you Christians with reservations about his work, please do yourself a favor and actually read his books before commenting. "Open Heart, Open Mind" is a great place to start. This man is a follower of Christ through-and-through, and his writings will be enough to confirm that to any with doubts. You must bear in mind that in these public talks, he is practicing ecumenicism--a form of interreligious dialogue that is lacking in most of Western Christianity. The language he uses and the terminology is chosen deliberately to engage the audience at hand. A book of his geared toward believers will sound different in tone and word choice. This ability to speak in a way that engages the audience rather than shuts them out is incredibly rare, and I love him for it.

      In one video he says that you realize that there is 'the other' than that you have to become 'the other' then realize that you are 'the other'. I AM. God told Moses that He is I AM. Then Jesus told the Pharisees that before Abraham was, I AM. Now the N.A. R. Seeker friendly, Word Of Faith, the Emergents and the Contemplatives and the Roman church are claiming it as well. It was the first lie that the the devil told Eve--that they could be like God--and it's worked so well he doesn't have to change his tactics. Exodus 3:14 .God said to Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’”......John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." Please read the Word in a good translation for discernment and not mystical 'wisdom' It will send you to hell.

    Father Keating's spiritual insight/understanding is so deeply elaborated . . . that conventional Church theology can't evaluate what he has to say with any confidence.
    Normally (and quite rightly) . . . that would mean he'd be required to keep his understanding non-public (as is Church policy for contemplatives in general).
    It's a testimony to his personal character that he's avoided that. It's unlikely that the same privilege will be extended to his successors in Centering Prayer . . .

    Some of the "Banter" reflected on this site is just one of the reasons I keep cyber communication at arms length.Without that direct human intercourse where one can look directly into the eyes of another, to observe their physical as well as their verbal posture, to discern the spirits as is gifted to believers from God it is so easy to "Misunderstand" another in regards to their intentions when their intentions are not clear and also assists in relieving us of a sort of accountability. I do believe that by the witness of The Holy Spirit of The One True Living God that The Christ Jesus is the only "Narrow Gate" to glory. All that being said I do in the true sense love any and all peoples of the Fathers creation. God help me.

    Clement of Alex.
    This teaching the apostle knows as truly divine. "Thou, O Timothy," he says, "from a child hast known the holy letters, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith that is in Christ Jesus." For truly holy are those letters that sanctify and deify; and the writings or volumes that consist of those holy letters and syllables, the same apostle consequently calls "inspired of God, being profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,... to every good work."

    @bob0wonder This may be Father Keating's talent, for one. Perhaps the Holy Spirit expresses itself through him in THIS way. Within the religious forms, Buddhism is very different, but at the top, God or Love or Being, there is a light that informs all the religions. To me, this doesn't mean Buddhism should literally be Christianity, but the Infinite Light that shines through both can be known. blessings, j.

    @bob0wonder Thanks for responding. According to another author, it looks like it was developed from The Cloud of Unknowing and based also on the ideas of Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross. The idea of inner stillness is from the experience of those disciples of Christ within the Catholic monastic tradition of deep meditation (or "contemplation"). You don't repeat the words, rather the sacred word is used as a reminder of your intention to allow God's presence and action within.

  • @elmobrother
    @elmobrother 13 лет назад

    @bob0wonder I think the idea of eastern religions, and the point where visionaries like Keating and Merton have been able to have a dialogue, is that of personal accountability of your actions and acitvely seeking God/ enlightenment. Modern Christianity has a sort of "I can do whatever I want as long as I'm saved" mentality. I think what he and other spiritual leaders are trying to do is foster an actually lifestyle change that is conducive to being in communion with God as much as possible.

  • @jhgosnell
    @jhgosnell 14 лет назад

    He seems to be a devout Christian, But, also he recognizes the unitive thread that runs through "religion." From this angle, the religions can be cast as a stained glass window, the light shining through the different colors of glass being God or the Source of existence.

    Repentance as turning away from former ways of pursuing happiness is fundamental to centering prayer's idea of transformation, and is often recalled explicitly in many of Keatings talks and writings. Just a quick look turns up references in these books:

  • @jhgosnell
    @jhgosnell 14 лет назад

    @bob0wonder Pagan may be a regression though to our early tribal mind. It's mostly magical thinking, not wrong, but limited. This is a forward movement to Unity. Theresa of Avila taught the path in stages culminating in silent prayer. The "kataphatic" approach (Greek for active use of symbols and verbal prayer) was emphasized early on and through the intermediate stages, then the "apophatic" path (letting go of symbols) was emphasized at the end of the path. For me, I do both. Blessings, j.

    @bob0wonder Thanks for your feedback. To me, to be one with God, or Christ, or the Spirit is the whole point of the Christian path. What on earth are you doing if you are not doing that? Paul states and restates this over and over. Centering prayer is the state of "not I that live, but Christ." It doesn't say in the bible LITERALLY "do centering prayer." Is that what you are looking for?

  • @jhgosnell
    @jhgosnell 14 лет назад

    @bob0wonder The Light of God. From an symbolic perspective, "Lucifer" reflects humanity's tendency to try to grasp that light for themselves. We are made of Light, but we try to play God in some literal sense. Repent means to turn around...turn around to God. The bible teaches oneness with Christ and God. This IS repentance...to me anyway. Keating is teaching repentance via centering prayer. Anything that results in putting on the mind of Christ is a form of repentance.

    Dear Justin Link,
    Have you ever read the writings of the ECF from the first 400 yrs. If you had you would realize that they had the Bible, although it may not have been one ratified book. 36,000 NT quotes present in their writings before the council of Nicea AD325. Clement of Alex(150-212AD) quotes from all but 3 bks of NT. The Apostles & those close to them wrote the Bible, not the RCC. Their accounts(Luke 1) letters, books(Rev) were read, copied & circulated & eventually compiled into one.

    Sometimes, you can get a little lost in this stuff. Your head can get a bit jammed up with it and it can start to sound like sophistry. Basically, you are dealing with staff which is notoriously difficult to describe and that's why one more wise commentator probably wouldn't go amiss. I love Thomas Keating's way of looking at things… but I've also got a lot of time for Richard Rohr. well worth listening to and not out of tune with anything here on this page.

    Its interesting how there are many people who keep clinging to their reality tunnel's interpretation of a dusty book. A collection of writings chosen by men, interpreted, translated, reinterpreted, and retranslated many times over to where the modern reader cannot fully understand the experience the original author encountered. The point Fr. Keating makes and many others make is that you can experience the divine yourself you don't need the Vatican to take your money and give you salvation, you don't need to believe the doom and gloom random youtube commenter, you won't need belief when you experience it for yourself. When you experience the oneness and the veil is lifted, all other's opinions about something they have not experienced will fall away leaving you with the truth.

    • @clouseauthecat181
      @clouseauthecat181 7 лет назад

      Keating is very demonic New Age. I don't think you realize how textually pure the Bible is. It's impossible but it's true. Thousands of ancient manuscripts from different places saying the same thing. The ESV is decent. Don't read a paraphrase. "Claiming to be wise, they became fools," Romans 1:2. The third eye? That's the occult. You need to seriously read the Bible. I can't tell you how my spirit recoils at this. I interact with God outside of the Bible as well. This man is really really creepy.

    • @CaptainPhilosophical
      @CaptainPhilosophical 7 лет назад

      Clouseau the cat Try speaking without using the "is" of identity. You will express your opinions more clearly. When you judge Fr Keating by saying "this man is really really creepy", the reader inadvertently places creepy in the man, instead of you owning your opinions. Is that what Fr Keating "IS"? If you read others comments you get a different idea of what he "IS". Who's right? The truth becomes apparent when you say something like "when I listen to Fr Keating I feel uneasy". Do you see the difference? When you judge others, your mind identifies with your thoughts. Didn't Jesus preach about passing judgement? Heed your guru's advice.

    @bob0wonder some of that is true i think...in doing typical verbal prayer, and in song, the mind is focused, so this is a help. maybe for most people this is better. "Satan" as I experience that (so far) is my own inner negativity, ignorance, greed, hatred, etc. You WANT this to rise in centering prayer so that you can observe it as part of your psychology and release it. We want to stop projecting this stuff as "out there" ONLY.

    My sister is a member of a CCH and I am concerned. My research so far indicates there is not enough emphasis on the Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel - Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sin, was buried, and rose 3 days later. His resurrection validated Who He is and what He did. Salvation is only found by believing in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Seems exclusive, because it is; however, it is fair because it is freely offered to everyone. This CCH appears to be demonic.

    Salvation is a free gift offered to everyone who believes in Jesus as their Savior. You can't earn it, you can only receive it as a gift from God. Jesus was hardest on the religious Jews that claimed the exclusivity you now appear to be claiming for the Roman Catholic Church. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Being in the Roman Catholic Church is NOT a perquisite to be saved.

    the roman church did not do it alone. the entire church decided these matters in councils assembling the entire united church of the time. Catholics cannot claim responsibility for the canon any more then antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Syria, India, ethiopia etc were all responsible for our bible. even the non calcedonians. thats why we all share the same scripture. sooo, find another reason to be Catholic. Oneness through God is only attainable by those who have faith and live true to God and Christ. Muslims cannot be one with Catholics and they will not convert either. Be careful with the definition of oneness, as the left abuses this for creating 'diversity' and thinking of different races as a social construct and not a biological reality. True diversity means that different nationalities have their own countries with their own customs and traditions inherent to them maintained and not
    altered by cultural marxism and the hypocrisy of socialists who are more often than not, atheists or will claim to be "spiritual but not religious". People should find and experience oneness through God and solidarity with eachother through the togetherness tied by strong conviction without having to be socialist idealists.

    Ah, this is where my mind splits of on another tangent than the integral gang.
    It's the assumption that this current time is the first time human-level intelligence evolves in the universe. Sorry but that is categoricaly not feasable, it's even akin to a geocentric world view or to use a clichéd similie a flat earth.
    It imposes a chronological linearity to awakening, or the evolution of god/consciousness. I don't buy it, it seems too yesterday of a thought.

    Please beware.
    Contemplative/Centered prayer is nothing more than Christianized paganism (as in yoga or T.M.) - but with a subtle twist. It seduces you into using Hindu styled mantras and breathing techniques with biblical words or phrases; then fools you into believing you are invoking the Spirit of Christ.
    Repetitious prayers (mantras) or breathing techniques are found nowhere in Scripture.
    Jesus said, “Use not vain repetition as the heathen do.” If the heathen do it - you can be sure Satan is behind it!

      Dear Patricia B and Pam Bolil,
      "GOD IS LOVE" (1 John 4:8), but He is also "TRUTH" (John 14:6).
      “Love rejoices in the truth.” (1 Cor.13:6) John wrote, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in the truth." (3 John 4)
      Obviously God's LOVE does not exist without God’s TRUTH: they are inseparable!
      The New Age Movement, along with all other false religious organizations (including the Roman Catholic Church) major on TRUTH-LESS love.
      They often use phrases like, "The spirit of unity" or "Unity in Diversity" and promote them with soothing but deceptive mantras such as, "God is All ~ All is One ~ therefore all share the Divine, and the Oneness that is God." They constantly declare, "There are many ways to God," and that, "All faiths are valid." Those and countless other lies fly in the face of Jesus, Who said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: NO ONE comes to the Father BUT BY ME.” (John 14:6) He also said, “… Many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matt. 22:14) And, “… Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matt. 7:14)
      Spiritually speaking, the Way to Heaven is as narrow as the width of Jesus’ shoulders. - Salvation is, and always will be through Christ ALONE.
      One day, multitudes will learn, "To miss by an inch is to miss by a mile!”
      Of course, forgiveness, compassion, and especially RECONCILIATION are vitally important as far as the Gospel message is concerned, but when TRUTH is omitted those words are utterly meaningless. For instance; no Pastor, Priest, Pope, or "virgin Mary" can act as, or on behalf of God in forgiving someone's sins. …
      “FOR THERE IS ONE GOD, AND ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MEN, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS,” (I Tim.2:5)
      God's Word clearly reveals that prayers to Mary for salvation (or any other reason), and the “confessional” are useless and blasphemous abominations!
      The truth is; GOD ALONE HAS THE POWER TO SAVE AND FORGIVE SINS.
      However, we can-and most certainly should-forgive all those that “trespass” or sin against us personally. (Mark 11:26)
      Once more, and for all time, God's forgiveness, love and salvation are to be found exclusively in and through His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
      "... for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. " (Acts 4:12)
      In light of all the above, here is just one example of the lies Thomas Keating would have you believe…
      “We should not hesitate to take the fruit of the age-old wisdom of the East and capture it for Christ. Indeed, those of us who are in ministry should make the necessary effort to acquaint ourselves with as many of these Eastern techniques as possible. …Many Christians have been greatly helped by Yoga, Zen, T.M. and similar practices. Of course these Christians need … reliable teachers, and a solidly developed Christian faith to find inner form and meaning to the resulting experiences.” (From, “Finding Grace at the Center.” By Thomas Keating and Basil Pennington)
      LOVE + TRUTH offers this warning…
      *Yoga, Zen, T.M., Martial Arts, Contemplative Prayer, etc., etc. are completely deceptive (no born again believer should touch, or even go near them.)
      Keating's “age-old wisdom of the East” is just another pagan, satanic stronghold, which needs to be PULLED DOWN BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD. (2Cor.10:4) - Not “captured for Christ.”
      Finally: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Matt. 7:15)

      ken rodway what a waste of bit memory! who do you think will take the time to read all this... who do you hope to convince with your offer of warning; what are you selling, Ken and for who? you are underestimating people's capacity to think for themselves with your pretentious sale pitch for the Truth. keep your truth and let people find theirs on their own.

      The ministry here is to preach the Gospel message: the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to quicken that message and bring those who believe it to salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
      If only one person is saved as a result, it will all have been worth while.
      God is offering you an unspeakable gift, but no one is forcing you to receive it.
      Please feel free to ignore further communications. (I'm certain you'll find no difficulty in doing that!)
      Very best wishes.
