  • The USS Slater. Docked in Albany, this WWII destroyer escort is the only ship of its type still afloat in America. While on board, our tour will take us through the different areas of operation as we learn about the role these ships played in sinking German U-boats during the war and what life was like on board for crews made up mostly of teenage boys.

Excellent video of a well-preserved ship. If you are ever in Albany it is worth seeing. My dad served on the Slater in late 1945 and 1946. He also helped with the restoration after it was towed to Albany (he was in his 80’s at the time). My family visited the Slater with my mom and dad and they rolled out the red carpet for us. We were all very appreciative. My dad is now 92 years old and is doing extremely well. He is the epitome of “the world’s greatest generation”. Thanks for your service, dad!

Nice Video! My neighbor's brother Frank Slater was on the USS San Francisco CA 38 & was killed on it & the USS Slater DE 766 was named after him. He mentioned how the whole Slater family went to christen this ship.

Well presented thumbnail of the complex, omnidimensional, dance of ASW warfare.
And see that line throwing gun? Sweet!

I thought that might have been for repelling boarders.

My father served on the DE-36 as a baker 2nd class... they gave out 2 pieces of bread with meals.. one piece was wetted and placed under those metal trays to keep them from sliding off the tables. The trays would stick to the bread.

Mary Heaton Depending upon when he served, your dad fed my dad. Heck, I remember my dad saying that he volunteered for KP (kitchen patrol) because the cooks ate better than the rest of the crew. So they may have worked along side of each other. And my dad helped restore the galley a decade ago.

He was on during the Atlantic convoy crossing with the USS Bermingham. Lots of stories about the stormy weather during the crossing. He was a member of a DESA group out of New Jersey. He took us aboard when it was in NYC after its return and before it went to Albany. We only made it to the galley before being escorted off as it was not fit to tour. He collected a lot of pennies for the Slater.

My father was on board during the pacific cruises just after the surrender of japan. I know they rode out a typhoon and eventually took her through the Panama Canal on her way to Jacksonville for decommissioning. We first visited the ship in 1996 (in Manhattan) with my dad and when he went aboard, it was 50 years to the month since he last disembarked. My dad also was a DESA member and officer I believe. He was also on the board of directors of the Slater. He’s still alive and doing quite well.

Warships traditionally have larger than necessary crews because it's assumed that some will die in the fighting.

The real problem were the Japanese naval bombers. They were everywhere all the time, and they always seemed to have escort fighters too. We had to use Magic to beat them.
