  • Welcome to this full review of a PVS-14 night vision mission recorder. This specific unit is sold by Brown Bear Industries as the NVGR, though we will compare to other options which are available on the market (such as the LMPR MKII from Because Operator and the ANVRS MK3 from Unobtainium Gear). This video features an intro skit as well as a lot of POV footage, raw footage, details, comparisons, anecdotes, a reveal of the entire setup, recommendations, pros, cons, and more!

I've been wondering how people were able to do this! You saved me a lot of money!

FYI for anyone with 1431 MK2s. You’ll need to get the PVS 14 universal if you choose the unobtanium gear recorder. Since they have the updated lock ring for that housing.

Great review I appreciate you taking the time to do this. Can you please tell me, what are the specs of your PVS-14? Specifically the Res, SNR, and EBI? trying to gauge the quality of footage that I would get from this unit with my own NVG versus your footage. Thanks.

Thanks a ton for the comment! I’m working with 33.2 SNR, 64 Res, and 2.01 EBI. Have a good one & I’m glad this has helped!

That information helps a lot. Those are good specs. So a follow up question then: when I use my old iPhone 6 to take video through my high spec tube, it never looks as good as it does in real life, by a large margin.
Would you say the video that this recorder shot is fairly on par with what you're seeing with your eye? Or do you think the video doesn't do the tube justice? Thanks

@@sneektip79 If you check this channel out much, you’ll see that I also use my phone for recording. I use the ArmsUnlimited adapter to connect my iPhone 13 Pro Max to the PVS-14. I don’t believe that either nearly gives a true-to-life view but I do think that each one has its own ups/downs. As far as image quality, I feel like the NVGR makes the image seem a bit darker than it really is. Both my phone and the NVGR don’t show the image to be as crisp/clear as it is in person. In all honesty, I got the NVGR because of the convenience of being able to record in a POV style while hands-free and still wearing the unit. That’s huge and not to be forgotten but comes at some costs, of course. Ultimately, I actually prefer the footage from the NVGR, though it’s still darker/more grainy than in real life. If I wanted professional quality night vision footage I’d do something like take an already light-sensitive camera setup and remove the IR filters then rig IR lights to it or something like that (as I’ve seen on T-Rex Arms RUclips channel). Beyond that, this setup works great for me but it’s still not perfect.

@@DontDoDaylight Thank you. That helps a lot. I was trying to take pictures to document a DIY IR diffuser last night and have just had enough of this hold-phone-behind-eyepiece crap. So I too, feel your pain and the need for a hands-free solution.

When I upload my files to my computer they are unplayable. Any idea what’s going on? I plugged the NGV recorder into the power bank and it records, but when I try to open the files on my PC they won’t play. Crashed my PC once too. Any ideas?

I get corrupt files only if the clip is less than 5 minutes in length. Besides that, I did reformat my SD card upon unboxing it which I believe is recommended. If it’s not either of those, I’d contact Brown Bear!

Excellent review. One question. If you have the NV Diopter adjusted to compensate for poor vision, does this affect the unit recording through that eyepiece. In other words, will they video be blurry when the Diopter is set to the maximums to compensate for poor human vision. Thanks in advance for any help you can give regarding this.

I appreciate the comment & will have to get back to you on that! Great question & I’m now curious. I happen to have my diopter set just about at “0”, so my current setup wouldn’t be useful to answer at the moment. I’ll experiment with that specifically and get back to you (hopefully sooner than later). I will say that my gut is that the diopter setting will not matter to the camera. It may also be a good idea to ask Brown Bear directly! If you do that before I get back to you, definitely let me know what they say!
