  • We’re learning more about a derailment involving three trains in Northampton County just outside Bethlehem. The wreckage spilled fuel and other materials into the Lehigh River.
    Marcella Baietto reports the latest on the investigation.

      Men make mistakes but computers and automation really muck sh^t up but good... As you can that trains engine was positively controlled right into the river. Should be interesting to see how they get all that crap cleaned up. Should take em at least till spring time..

      Not really...trains can stop for any reason. PTC would stop a train from running a red signal, but it can't stop any possible adverse action that could happen to a train.

      It is a very busy mainline right out of the Allentown n/s yard up to 60 trains a day would pass through this area

    Sure am glad the Feds required PTC to be installed on mainlines across the country! Remember their position that PTC would put an end to trains running into each other? EPIC FAIL!

      @@AlcoLoco251 Being a retired Flight Wing Engineer/commander off a U.S. Navy warship I know all too well systems can be selectively hacked like this one was. That is what is being discussed right now thee epitome of the reasons I am not still down in my shop working or getting a shower right now... Parts of unified integral networks can be targeted just like how a lone trojan computer virus does. The Navy made us rerun program updates over and over thru various system checks before it is allowed to a mainframe. Guess what we also did have sh^t slip on by even with all that. On an open active network like PTC its childs play to infect a system that simple. Those engineer Genies from the bottle have multiple open back doors with no way of stopping intrusion just because those networks need constant updates and system checks are all performed from access points... Part of the epitome of what is wrong with modern day automation. Too many fingers in any cookie jar is exactly how folks and computers get sick...

      @@AlcoLoco251 Another thing most lame brains do not even think about is just how easy it would be to sabotage a rail network change signals even create and make signals. Sabotage has been around since the beginnings of time. I mean hell our special ops as far back as WWII made trains in Germany and France collide. Today with operators barely paying attention it would be all that much easier to switch tracks create false signal lights and stuff. Mere childs play to anyone with a technical backgrounds. I mean today someone computer savvy could sabotage an entire rail line while at home relaxing drinking beer and watching a football game its that friggin easy to techno geeks.

      PTC doesn't stop your train when running on a restrictive signal. When on a restricting and pulling into a block behind another train it's up to the crew members to be awake and attentive. This was a case of a crew falling asleep behind the controls.

    WHY DID NORFOLK SOUTHERN RIP OUT THE OVER THE AIR ATCS FROM THIS LINE ??!!!
    In the late 90s they had Base Control Points and Mobile Control Points on all the signals, switches and tracks from Blandon, Topton, Emmaus, Allentown, Hellertown, Easton and into NJ and the system transmitted all the track switches and signal indications as well as the track blocks being occupied by trains.
    This information was transmitted by the wayside devices on the MCPs to the locomotives and a view of the tracks was shown on the screen giving a full picture of the status of all the tracks and signals.
    The system could automatically stop a train if it went through a red signal.
    In the early 2000s they ripped out all these safety equipment and radios from the bungalows.
    It made no sense.
    If that system was in the bungalows this accident would not have happened.
    The alarms would have sounded in the locomotives and the emergency brakes would have been activated.
    The railroads Keep getting delays on installing the PTC ATCS system because they don't want to spend the money on it.
    How bad of a disaster will have to happen before Congress forces the railroads to put in this safety equipment ??!!!

    I couldn't even watch all of this, even though it was a short clip. If you are reporting on a story and can't get the name of the company correct, credibility is gone in my opinion.

    I dont know if all train engines have positive train control systems on them it is controlled by g.p.s ,and wireless radio signal and computer .possibly malfunction ? If there was a stop signal out conductor needs permission grom dispatcher to go past it .old conrail phila.div.pa. .***

      Chances are very high they all had I-ETMS installed. That system isn't letting you by a positive stop. If you have permission from the dispatcher, the computer will know and will enforce restricted speed.

      Someone is putting something on the in the middle of the tracks, like explosive 🧨 they hit it and Boom 💥 trains derailed!! Same thing is happening on highway’s don’t hit bag or anything on highway.this is Terroisiam .
