He took a legion of outcast mutants with little in the way of victories and remade them into one of the top legions with victories to rival Guilliman, Russ, and Such just behind the Lion and Horus even though he was discovered as a middle Primarch. He saved his world of savages just like he did his Legion. All Primarch's respected his combat skill. The Dark Angels and White Scars are my top 3 Loyalists legions. And that the High Sanguinary Priest and the High Chaplain take temporary joined command over the chapter before a new chapter master is put in place to make sure a desaster like one in their past - were a newly appointed chapter master almost on the spot fell to the flaw which left them in an organitorical crisis. - never happens again and a suitable - and stable - candidate is chosen.

Those that know what its like to be living in hell are the ones that will be go above and beyond to defend the innocent. Which is a bit of a real life phenomenon in psychology. Suffering (up to a certain point) fosters compassion, drive and mental fortitude for whatever reason.
