    Wait preassure therapy? I use my cat for that :D No service animal of course. But it helps~ The weight of him (6KGs) and the soft fur and loud purr is really helping. The mindless peting I give him calms me down quick but I have to remember meds on my own :D

    Reminder* not all SD (or in my case an assistance dog) look like this. My girl is a psych dog and doesn’t do hardly any of these tasks. But this was a great example of a mobility aid trained dog!!

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 года назад +12

      Hi Emily - while many of these tasks are mobility related tasks, theres also examples of guide work, as well as some psych service dog tasks such as block and cover, medication reminder/retrieval, and behavior/self-harm interruption, all of which some of my PSD clients have used with their own dogs :) It's important to remember that every service dog looks different depending on the needs of each particular person and the way their disability presents. Have a great day!

    Well.. Australian cattle dog mix with border collie...mixing two intelligent dogs... I had a red Australian cattle dog and she was so easy to train...and she passed away 6.2.19...she lived a little over 15 years. I miss her so terribly...I think I'm finally ready emotionally to get another service dog...just gonna be so difficult to find one...But um yeah...when you get a dog with those 2 breeds...so intelligent ...so easy to train... I'm glad that you've got such a beautiful pup ...inside and out...

      @@DoggyU Awesome! I definitely will check those out … I need help with tasks I think my Super Sophie can learn … eventually.
      My next question is … do you have videos that teach spouses/significant others to not undo the daunting training of teaching a year-old highly reactive pup emotional control? My Sophie STILL gets crazy, loses her mind, and jumps and squeals hysterically when my spouse comes home (six months after Sophie pup adopted us), and my spouse insists she “can control” Sophie, which consists of grabbing the pup, putting her on her back, and rubbing Sophie pup’s tummy! Sophie doesn’t get discipline or learn self control, but rather, has been rewarded for being out of control. Then when I have Sophie with me (I’m TRYING to train her to SOME DAY be my mobility/balance/brace service dog) she does not want to mind!
      If you don’t have a video for family members that desperately need “obedience training”, would you consider making one for only family/friends of people with “service dogs in training”? And something that emphasizes that even when service dogs aren’t “technically” working, they must still have super-good self control, as well as exceptional good manners.
      Thank you Laura, Jake, & Coolwhip for all y’all’s hard work training us pups ‘n peoples❣️

      @@michaelinejunefrost9437 Unfortunately, training family members can be really challenging. Sometimes more than the dog. In those cases, it's important to have a heart to heart with that person and how their behaviors is effecting your ability to train, and then, it's also important that if you can't change their behavior, you have to change your behavior. Meaning, when your spouse is coming home, you leash your dog with you, reinforce for calm behavior etc. Essentially you need to train your dog's behavior against your partners distracting behavior.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  5 лет назад +19

      Hi Freya - that's a really complicated question that involves knowing the breed, age, foundation, and type of training you've already worked on with your dog.
      Generally, if the dog is struggling with distractions it means you've introduced too many distractions too soon in the learning process and probably need to take several steps back until the dog is proficient with whatever behavior you're asking in a neutral environment, and then start adding distractions methodically over time, one at a time. This video may help you think about each separate distraction you need to work around. ruclips.net/video/vbbu83ndHNM/видео.html

    If I was to self train my small dog do you think I could use clips on her vest instead of her carrying items because she cannot carry heavy items in her mouth? Ex. Using a small pill holder and putting it on a clip on her vest/harness.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  4 года назад +5

      I think clipping something to her harness like pills may prove to be dangerous if she were to get into them if they are on her harness for an extended period of time. I could see having her carry some pills inside a backpack though - that might be a safer bet! But most dogs, even small ones can carry a traditional yellow pill bottle. You could also put the medication you need in a smaller, more easily gripped container. Just some other ways to solve the small dog problem :)

    It is interesting seeing what some dogs do, BUT, how do you get them to do it? I developed a "compulsive" behavior due to PTSD. When I get stressed, I will scratch my left elbow until it bleeds and not realize I am doing it until I see a bloody hand. I need to train my dog to interrupt the repetitive behavior to stop it before it gets to that point.

I'm also working on developing a course to train that behavior for sometime in 2023. Hope that helps!

    I have spent three years to get nothing but run around and money taken with no serious commitment by Service Dog Facilities for a needed Medical Alert and CPTSD Service Dog. I started to train my dog to alert to my Hypoglycemia and Hypokalemia because it can cause Panic Anxiety, Vertigo, Dizzy Spells, Fainting and Sweats while messing with my Heart when low. She saved my life when I went into shock from an Bladder infection and alerted to my levels being in the danger zone, while I was in and out of consciousness she kept me awake till my brother got to me and was put in the hospital because of it. I owe my life to her after three years of training. Unfortunately she is to old to be a Service Dog in public it's to much on her so I have her help me at home, unless we go to places that let me take her. As I have said it's been years of trying to get an Service Dog who can help me especially out in public, but with each payment just to get in the door to places like Medical Mutts, Power Paws, Service Dogs of America and few others wanted $$$$ of money while being bias and stereotypical run around and dragging their feet, while finding any reason to down grade my situation and then not follow through. of me a civilian with the Medical and CPTSD Survivor case.
    Despite my EMDR, Psychiatrist and Doctor saying I can handle the training I have done the training through online with my senior dog, and that just because I am single in my own home and not in a relationship, doesn't mean I'm incapable, incompetent and don't have a safety net/support around me because that is not true. It's very, very humiliating and degrading going through issues with multiple Service Dog Facilities that I have lost hope in them, despite what they claim, I feel if you benefit from a Service Dog through them, it comes off as only if you boost their image, served our nation or are married in a supposed "healthy relationship" is what I got from them. There is also discrimination double standard if you served and have pets already at home, they trust you'd make a good candidate, but if your a single civilian they claim "you might not be capable or up to the task, we prefer to place dog in a home with no other pets if your a civilian, or we need to meet your dog" . I was willing to go down to each facility with my senior dog with a friend or family, after investing money to these places , just to be ghosted and then a slap in the face a year or two years later they say "oh we just don't think your right for us, or we don't think under bias assumptions your up for the task" all a load of crap. I was told the sooner the better, and at this point I'm looking to adopt a dog from a shelter and train them and then use Atlas Organization that trains adopted dogs for doing Service Dog job.
    What is your recommendation of looking for a candidate in a Shelter.
    I have heard only Diabetes alerts by Service Dog, but I can tell you having Hypoglycemia and Hypokalemia is no different, and it's frustrating and sad for the millions who truly need an alert medical for these situations that can be done, like facilities do Diabetics I believe they can if they weren't stubborn and willing to learn from those who train their dog for Hypoglycemia and Hypokalemia, and when you say you have Complex Post Traumatic Stress and Anxiety Disorder they act like they have no clue what that is, yet it's worse than PTSD for some like me, and a big difference than those who Served it's usually worse as a civilian survivor, yet the facilities were ignorant and didn't want to understand the difference and that is a real diagnosis for civilians especially those who have like me been through foster situation.

    • @DoggyU
      @DoggyU  2 года назад

      Hi Gigi - I'm sorry you've had such a hard time getting the help you are seeking. Service dog training is an unregulated industry, and that can make things incredibly challenging, along with each organization training for specific things, and not everyone being a good fit for all programs. There's definitely more people looking for dogs out there than there are places that can fill that need.
      As far as rescues go, I generally don't recommend adopting a dog as a service dog in most cases, as it's very difficult to vet dogs for suitability in shelter situations. You also have no idea about their health history, or socialization history. It can take dogs weeks or even months to decompress after a shelter situation before they show their true personality and temperament, which can make evaluating individual dogs difficult. If you do decide to adopt a dog, I recommend a foster-to-adopt situation where you can have the dog in-home and have a professional assess it over a period of a month to see if it's a good candidate for the type of service work you would like the dog to do. Either way, I recommend you get a trainer on-board before picking a prospect so that they can help you with assessing candidates before making a commitment.

      Oh my goodness I have hypokalemia and just learned that I have it!!!!!!! I’m so sorry about your situation, but I’m just excited bc I’ve never once met anyone with hypokalemia before!!!!!!
      Im training my own service dog (trying!! We purchased her as a puppy from a reputable breeder to make sure she was very healthy) and she seems to be learning what my mouth or breath smells like when I’m having an episode, so she stays next to me (I become paralyzed). I don’t know if she’d ever be able to learn to smell it ahead of time, but she’s learned over time what the smell is when she needs to stay and protect (she very clearly comes over and smells my mouth!). Dogs are fascinating. Perhaps the dog you choose could learn this too!!!
