I didn’t know at 7 am this morning, before work, I would be hitting the pause button as John was talking and writing notes! This was so rich and helpful. I appreciate John’s honesty and vulnerability; I can so relate and it helps me feel less alone. Thank you John. I will be using these notes, with Jesus, when distorted thinking comes my way. ❤

I was so thankful to listen again to this most honest and helpful talk. This way of listening is something I seek to do so that I can live in the truth of what is. And I prayerfully am with others in this way of listening as a spiritual director. This morning I am driving a couple of hours to a class to learn from someone I deeply admire. As a child my elementary school memories are clouded with memories of hardness and disappointment, seeing myself as less than in any academic setting. I found myself very anxious this morning and I listened with God and was reminded again of these things that had formed me and was with God and my warm coffee reminding myself of the truth of his love for me and presence with me. Working through this thoughtful way of listening with God and the truth of what is and isn’t continues to be such a helpful concrete tool. Thank you, John, for posting this talk again. So thankful for having such helpful tools and you sharing your experience of walking through life with God.

John, I love that you’re so human and you share that humaneness with us. Looking forward to the day it’s all behind us and there will be no despair or no second thoughts❤ there was a time I needed to speak in front of some young women. They’re about 100 of them and I was so fearful because of my own shortcomings that I couldn’t do it extreme distress. I just wanna know how God feels about me and believe that with all my heart.

Distorted thinking can be the root of many people's complications in life. In the world of recovery, many people's maladaptive coping mechanisms are directly related to distorted thinking. In my own life, I used to base my reality or truth on thoughts that had been distorted within my environment. Today, I recognize this as confusion, but in the past, I considered something to be true that actually was not, and I turned that into a belief. This belief was based on a distorted sense of reality. Good work today.

Thank you for your words. I left my kids with their dad 7;years ago at end of October. There were good reasons at the time but now I wish I had done it differently. Thankfully I do have communications with my beautiful boys but I'm certainly not seeing them on any regular basis. I can't go back but my guilt is still so big I am working through it day by day. I know the thought that is crippling my spirit so it's probably a good exercise. I keep asking for God's strength to go and see them at the family home with their father but I'm scared too. Thank you John❤

@@traceyyeo5647 My story is similar, and I know the weight of pain that doesn’t quickly leave. But I've found that in the quiet moments when I sit with Jesus and let His presence fill the spaces where the hurt is most resounding, that’s where peace starts to come. It’s not always quick, but He is faithful in meeting us there. Keep leaning on Him, especially when it feels hardest. He's never far.
      Heavenly Father,
We come to You with heavy but hopeful hearts, lifting up this mother who is carrying the weight of past decisions and the deep longing to be with her children. Lord, You know her heart, her love for her boys, and the complexity of the choices she made years ago. You also see the pain, guilt, and fear she continues to carry.
Father, Your Word tells us in Psalm 34:18 that You are "close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit." We ask that You draw near to her in her sorrow and give her the strength she needs to face each day. Remind her that she is not alone in this journey, that Your love covers her, and that Your grace is more significant than any guilt she might feel. Help her to release her burdens to You, knowing that You understand the depths of her heart.
Lord, we ask for Your courage and peace as she seeks to visit her boys, to bridge that gap between her and the family home. Remove the fear that grips her and replace it with Your perfect love, which casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). Let her steps be guided by Your wisdom and covered in Your protection as she moves forward in faith.
We thank You that she is working through this pain, even though it is hard. We pray that she continues to find healing, layer by layer, day by day. May she learn that You are a God of restoration and redemption, capable of turning every broken piece into something beautiful. Help her to trust Your timing, even when it feels slow, and to rest in the knowledge that You are with her, holding her hand through every moment of doubt and fear.
We pray for her beautiful boys as well, that they, too, feel Your love and peace. May You restore and strengthen their relationship, creating opportunities for healing and connection. Bring unity, love, and grace into their family in ways only You can.
Lord, give her hope-the hope that only comes from You, that reminds us that no story is beyond Your ability to rewrite. In moments of quiet, when the pain feels overwhelming, let her hear Your voice, whispering that she is loved, forgiven, and never beyond Your reach.
In the name of Jesus, we pray,
      Amen.

Mary, you are loved. I'm thinking of Moses who was on "the far side of the wilderness" when at an older age God made it so obviously clear just how deeply he loved Moses. Moses carried regret (he'd killed a man in anger and hid the body in the sand) and felt his life had passed him by. It was then that God's love called to him in such a profound way! (Exodus 1 through 3.) Mary, you are so deeply loved. - Brad

You are providing a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in and a safe environment. You are also providing help to the person renting you that room. Gratitude for what we have is a wonderful position. The Father is good, he has provided for you, perhaps not in the way you would be more comfortable, but he has provided. The Father loves you dearly, be blessed.

My parents never said they were sorry; they were never satisfied. This resulted in a Spiritual Formation that was not healthy. As a parent, I was determined to be different where apology was given. Asking for forgiveness and learning that forgiveness is not the same as relationship has been transformative. For me, forgiveness means that nobody owes me anything. This is coming from memory, but Dr. Willard had a definition of humility which is to never pretend, never have an expectation about how other treat me or how I am received, and never push. Over time this has allowed me to keep my mouth shut and my ears open to others. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, so many of these hit home at one time or another. Thank you, John. It was not an accident that you presented this video again. I remember how it moved me the first time I saw it. Praise God, I needed to hear this replay. I realize I’ve been caught in all-or-nothing thinking patterns, overgeneralizing and distorting my view by emphasizing the negative and jumping to conclusions. It’s like I’ve been discounting the joy and minimizing the positive moments, only focusing on what I feel I’ve done wrong or where I didn’t measure up, those “shoulda, woulda, coulda” thoughts that pile on the self-blame. But I’m reminded of God’s grace and love that meets me even in this mess.
Dallas Willard said, “We don’t believe something by merely saying we believe it, or even when we believe that we believe it. We believe something when we act as if it were true.” I need to live as though God’s grace and love are real, embracing the truth that I don’t have to be perfect.
And as 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I can rest in that promise.
