@@aliyourbrother1all these guys were deep artists and geniuses. Thats the only reason youd do something like Funkadelic to begin with. It has been said this piece is "entirely an homage to Bach". For real: in a review of an academic paper by Ellen Exner called "Certifying J. S. Bach’s Interplanetary Funksmanship: George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, and P-Funk’s Baroque Aesthetic", it is written: [A] a survey of P-Funk’s works reveals that there are indeed [...] tracks that do overtly reference the style of [JS Bach]. One such is “Atmosphere” (Let’s Take it to the Stage, 1975), the music of which is entirely an homage to Bach. The infusion of Bachian and other “classical” textures into P-Funk’s eclectic blend was among the essential contributions of Clinton’s brilliant keyboardist, Bernard Worrell. The “Wizard of Woo,” as Worrell was sometimes known, brought an extraordinarily sophisticated level of musicianship to the band, having trained as a concert pianist at the Juilliard School and then the New England Conservatory. His virtuosic instrumental commentary, encyclopedic command of musical styles, contagious bass lines, and the signature extraterrestrial soundscape he created with his Moog synthesizer were indispensable to the group’s unique sonic identity. Exner's paper "marks the first scholarly exploration of P-Funk’s debt to Bach and by extension joins an ever-evolving discussion of how his music transcends generic boundaries. " From www.americanbachsociety.org/Newsletters/BachNotes28.pdf
It is shocking to me that only through Bach could one recognize the immensely sophisticated level of musicianship in P-Funk. As if, had Bernie not chosen to pay homage to Bach, people who consider themselves music aficionados wouldn't have been able to recognize talent outside of their chosen genre. Bernie was far from the only person who exhibited an "extraordinarily sophisticated level of musicianship" in the band even if he was the main one to reference Bach.
@@MLATX512 I believe you misunderstand what Exner wrote. There's nothing about recognizing P-Funk's musicianship "only through Bach" there! Bernie did bring HIS sophisticated musicianship to join with the different yet also sophisticated musicianships of others. Just like I can "bring my sense of humor" to my family dinner table without implying that nobody else in my family has a sense of humor. Exner also wrote that George Clinton, in his 2014 memoir, "specifically identified the contrapuntal style of J. S. Bach as an important musical influence while discussing composition of the track “Nappy Dugout” (Funkadelic, Cosmic Slop, 1973)" So maybe you should take your concerns up with George Clinton?! P.S. I am sure most of us who have loved Parliament/Funkadelic came to it with absolutely no idea that any of them were "into" Bach. It's not important, it doesn't make P-Funk any more legit, it's just a fun thing about music and musicians. Categories are not so important. But I do know for a fact that Bach never wrote anything like these lyrics, about pussies, clits and dicks.
I've been listening to this song for at least a decade and I used to play in an orchestra. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I never listened to this song with classical in mind; thank you for giving me a whole new way to enjoy this piece!
As far as "recognizing the immensly sophisticated level of musicianship in P-Funk" through Bach - for me it was sort of the other way around. This song SPECIFICALLY was how i gradually got into the music of Bach. I was vaguely familiar with it before, as most of us might be, enough to recognize this song as a Bach pastiche. And for me it was Bernies interpretation that made me realize there was a .. funk and a beauty in the works of Bach that was worth investigating more thoroughly. I once told this story to an internationally acclaimed classical musician (who I was interviewing for the release of his "Goldberg Variations") - the response was pretty wide eyed (though not really in a dismissive way)
This is funk travelling through the atmosphere into the milky way... if you put a microphone into the universe, this it what it sound like. RIP to Bernie Worrell.. . The Woo Warrior!!!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
BERNIE WORRELL!!!!.. the man is from another dimension... last half of this track sounds like he takes you to church and lights up a j before you walk in lol
It just captures something depressing, yet hauntingly soulful....like an inner pain, or fear, expressed musically. I get sad and reflective every time I hear it.
Funkadelic and Bernie Worrell is pure genius but don't forget the other subtle genius of Eddie Hazel playing the guitar riffs in the background in the 70s my 15 year old self used to lock the doors of my bedroom and blast my stereo system to the ceiling when playing Funkadelic Albums.

Only Funkadelic, especially Bernie 'Woo' Worrell', can make a song 7-10+ minutes long and you think it's not long enough.
