      Fabulous question!
God's story and redemption in the bible was a message to His people, who would then be a light to the world. This worked in the many instances that God chose to preserve as scripture for us to learn about him.
Throughout the old testament there were other nations around the Israelites. Those nations came in contact with the Israelites. Those other nations brought their own culture with them. More than one wife was one of those items of culture that "invaded" so to speak into the Israelites. If you read the many stories with "more than one wife" there was always trouble and difficulty. A good quote I hear often at church: "God and Jesus did not to make bad people good, he came to make dead (spiritually speaking) people alive. " He could do that even with behavior that was an invasive cultural habit.
Fortunately, that piece of culture did not stop God from making His message and pouring out His love to people.

I really like your sermons, but celibacy means celibacy not singleness.
