@Audrey I don't game often but I have played cs go and it runs pretty smoothly and fans only kick on after 30 or so minutes. Tbh, I don't game much often but from what I've seen and played, it's pretty smooth.

@@aircommandslipperz It should be noted Apple did not manufacture these M1 processoprs but TSMC did. A company that both Intel and AMD can and do make use of also.
Apple pulled off what Microsoft has tried and failed to do twice now. Imagine if the OG Surface or Pro X had launched with this level of performance and compatibility.
I'm not sure if Microsoft really failed. It feels more like they didn't even really try in the first place.
It is much harder to make an architectural transition in Windows than it is on Macs due to the different markets and the different policies of Apple and Microsoft.
But that still doesn't excuse the poor hardware of the Surface Pro X. That thing is slow. Really slow. It's not even a new chip. SQ1 and SQ2 are just a rebranded Snapdragon 865.
Apple went all out on this transition and it really shows. They made a completely new and custom chip that's specifically designed for this exact purpose.
Microsoft's attempt feels more like a side project. They announce a whole bunch of stuff and are like "Oh, yes btw we also made this. Maybe you like it"
It's really obvious that the Surface Pro X was not a top priority project.
Personally, I think it's sad. What the Windows market needs is a new Intel or AMD grade OEM that makes ARM CPUs and sells them to whoever wants to build a Windows computer. I think Microsoft could be this company, but for some reason they just don't do it.
Microsoft could never make a proprietary CPU the way Apple can do it. Only Apple makes Macs. But not only Microsoft makes Windows computers. So they'd have to give those chips to other manufacturers in order for it to have some sort of chance. If they keep those chips for themselves, they'll fail since almost nobody will get to experience them as 99% of the market still runs on x86.

Not to excuse their laptops but they barely invested that much R&D into their products. Microsoft is going pretty much all in on Cloud Computing and maybe android in the future.
@@milkstorm4818 exactly, microsoft tried with phones but they didn't make the hardware of any windows phone and just made the OS, now they trying with surface duo but again microsoft makes the hardware this time but they dont make the cpu part and it runs android which is googles thing

The main difference between Microsoft and Apple is that Apple kept all the crappy ARM Macs in the basement until TSMC achieved a 5nm manufacturing process at scale. Microsoft releases crappy Surface devices to the public. Microsoft does this to spur the OEMs on to do better, but OEMs don't always care.
I got one of these bad boys, and I can't believe it this is like switching from windows to mac back in 2010 when Macs were super fast on snow leopard. Feels like that all over again absolutely stunning.

@@whengrapespop5728 You can upgrade the RAM and switch to an SSD and it will be even better. I have an '09 iMac with the E7600 and 8GB of RAM and it runs Catalina perfectly.

just picked this thing up with the student discount for $899! Incredible machine! It's my first mac ever and it was hard to make the switch, but no windows based laptop in the price range even remotely touched this thing. It checked every single box for me whereas most windows options checked only a few unless I spent $1500. For the first time in my life, the mac was the cheaper option!

This video feels weirdly out of place, with no recommendation on who should buy it, because I feel like I have 0 things that I’d rather have on a MacOS than on Windows, and therefore this whole superfast ultrachill longbattery laptop is as useful as a monitor stand.

I started learning music production on Logic about 2 weeks ago now and I've been running a Hackintosh. I ordered an M1 Air for my birthday today. The M1 processor is better than what I've got and I love the small form factor so I can easily carry it over to my musician friend for help

I love this video and agree with you 100%. I looked at laptops for at least a month and tried so many. This has been the best move I have ever made with the base model MacBook Air M1.

As a person that took the plunge for an 8gb 512gb MBP, I gotta say....its worth it.
I came from a $2800 15 inch Macbook Pro 2016. 4 years was enough to wait.
I unplug at 6am, at 10 pm i'm at 60% battery.
I'm a software analyst, and use it to remote into my Lenovo work laptop.
I love Ableton, and plugins and layering is fine, no hiccups.
I love how fast it is, but still am waiting for full optimization.
As for would I regret not waiting for next year? Technology is a non stop bullet train. Its up to you when you jump on.

I’m super excited for the transition. These first models really are so impressive that even with my work loads as a developer, a MacBook Air would seem to do really well. Build times are better than my current MBP 15”. My only hold up is software support and lack of ports. When the 16” or even the 13” with 4 USB-C ports are updated, I may make the switch then. Hopefully the software support for dev tools improves by then which I’m sure it will.

I am Commenting on this from my Base Model M1 Mac Book Air and I've had it for like a month now..I am more than satisfies with this and this was a huge update from my 5-year-old laptop...It's Great ..
Got a I3 model for my girlfriend for Christmas. She likes editing videos so I was a bit worried about preformance than this happened and it saved the day I reserved one and am headed to Best Buy to pick it up now and I’m so thankful this happened in time to switch em up and give her one that is gonna blow away any video editing she’s gonna be doing

@@eddmundodantewilson7316 Not really. OP stated that he cross shopped the XPS 13. Right now, that computer is actually $50 more expensive than the MBA. I could not recommend the XPS to someone right now unless they are vehemently against Mac OS.

I recently lost my early 2020 MacBook Air (we think it got stolen), and got a surface laptop 3 as a replacement, as I used it I realized I didn’t like windows in a laptop format, I decided to stick with it until the internal Wi-Fi module stopped functioning, and so I returned it. As I said, noticed I love mac os in a laptop format, and love windows in a desktop format (Gaming PC). Just ordered the M1 MacBook Pro and couldn’t be more excited to take it with me on the go.
These M1 Macs are outstanding, no doubt. However, I’m going to hold off a bit because I would really like a 16-inch version and hopefully (fingers crossed), they finally put a 1080p cameras on those. The second one seems a bit far off, I know...
Picked up the baseline last week and within a couple minutes knew it was my new default.
Just bought one Macbook air M1 today! Can't wait to receive it

Fun fact: all apple chips since A12 has dedicated hardware accelerators for direct binary translation for Rosetta 2, which is the reason why Rosetta translation leads to only a 20% performance penalty, rather than possibly 90% penalty if those HW blocks weren’t there.

Im watching this on the mac air m1 2020 , very happy
The reasons why I'm sticking with my custom built pc an not the m1 as a creative is that I can easily upgrade my ram, storage, processor etc. Also sticking with the Xps 15 because it can also be easily repaired as most parts are removable. Its important to be able to repair your device for longevity.

When these reviews talk about "Professionals", why not include Programmers in the conversation? Is there a downside to using this processor for development? Any compatibility issues? These content creators can literally use an iPad Pro. Programmers neeeeeed to use a PC.
I mean... you can’t run Logic or MainStage on an iPad. Or Ableton, or like the whole Adobe suite other than photoshop. That makes the iPad Pro a pretty hard sell.
I think they probably focus on content creators because those people who want Logic Pro or Final Cut are typically the people who are going to be buying Macs as professionals. Historically most Macs have had pretty bad to okay price to performance ratio which is only really offset in terms of value by all the good creative software available + education discounts.
May not be true now, but it was for a long time and I think it’s pretty embedded in how Macs are perceived culturally.
That being said you’re still 100 percent right. Programmers should be included in the conversation. I’ve seen a handful of those reviews in my recs before and I’ll reply to this comment if I see them again.
Check out Dave2D’s review. He compared the compile times and they are as good as on the 2.5k 2020 16” MacBook Pro.
The only thing I have heard about programmers because I am an IT student myself, is that tensorflow doesn't work (only if you run it on Google Collab works) and the Android Emulator does not work cause this CPU doesnt support vt-x. So yeah.. If you use these and want a laptop now, dont buy this one. Maybe if you arent in a rush.. They will fix this on future update or the next chip (probably M2).
P.S. I think that I saw somewhere they said it is hella difficult to install gcc too. But this will be fixed on an update I think.
