I'm a frequent watcher of all your instructional videos, but you've really outdone yourself on this one and this is a "Classic" among others that you've produced. Your videos are my 'college' of typewriter repair source material. Your ability to simplify some very complicated aspects of these machines into an absorbable format that knits together a new found bit of knowledge that inspires confidence. You're a great Instructor as well as technician. Student & Fan Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, WA
Thanks again for this video, just got 3 of this style to get cleaned and up and going. Glad to know that taking off the carriage on this model was the correct first thing to do. Couldn't find a video on how to get the body off this style of Hermes 3000. This video was perfect. Getting everything cleaned up then hoping it goes back together OK. Thanks for great instruction as always. Very great full for these videos. You were helpful on the phone also when I called a few weeks ago :). Thanks again.
so are you using lacquer thinner in the bottle or mineral oils? perhaps you can tell which make of chemicals you are using and can find equivalent in Germany 😊 just got an Olympia that i think was treated with wd-40 and need to flush it out
I have been using lacquer thinner for 40+ years, LT is same as acetone, but LT doesn't dry as fast Mineral spirits is like 1/2 the potency of LT, Denatured Alcohol is a choice too, LT will melt some plastics, MS usually won't
This one I didn't, but I usually do spray lightly with MG401B , this has a trace of mineral oil, then I blow that out too. It's so thin it's wonderful stuff, good for just that ever so light coating to keep rust or corrosion away, harmless on all plastics too. www.ebay.com/itm/MG-Chemicals-401B-340G-Nutrol-Control-Cleaner-340g-12-Oz-Aerosol-Can/251912832391?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
Thank you Duane. I have tried to find a local shop one guy told me to throw it away ( yikes ) it's so cool I like to fix things so I wanted to give it a try. I love to watch your videos. I will keep watching maybe you will show where to even look for the problem in the future. Keep up the great work! Deb
Another great Hermes 3000 video. What are you spaying on the plastic keys to keep the lacquer thinner from eating the plastic if any of the thinner gets on them?
I really hate this stuff, (wd-40) that's why every can I get, I cover the can with tape or something so I don't have to see the label. That, and I don't want any customers to see that I have WD-40 on my bench or in my shop anywhere, but it does have some uses, just not as a typewriter lubricant . . . .
Thanks for this video. I have this same model and was able to successfully flush all the junk out of the segments with the instructions in this video. The keys are now unbelievably smooth. My only issue is that my typewriter still has a lacquer thinner smell a week later. I even let it sit outside for hours on a clear day to air out, but I still smell it. Any ideas? ... Is it possible that there's still lacquer thinner trapped inside the first segment, nearest the keys? I used an air compressor, but couldn't really tell if I was getting in there. Thanks!
Your LT might be different than my LT, yes it smells, but dry's fast and leaves virtually no odor, now if it gets soaked into any sound protection (felt) or type bar pad material, it will linger until it dissipates, but it will 100%, it has no choice, one week surely has to be enough, smell might be something else, could have activated pocket of grease or oil or ? These vintage machines can emanate a lot of smells included stinky/musty odor
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 you may be right. I think previous owner used some kind of oil because some greasy stuff definitely came out when I flushed it. I’m going to let it sit longer and if necessary, do another flush.
Thank you for all of your wonderful video's. I was wondering if you could show a video of how to fix the space bar? I have a Hermes 3000 and my space bar does not move the cartridge. Thanks again Deb
I all ready answered this........ I can't see what is broken to help guide you how to fix it Main spring ? linkage ? escapement ? debris ? adjustment ? Something Unforeseen . . . .
Good info as usual. I also have a "perfect condition" Smith corona silent that was seriously gummed-up. Cleaned it as you do but I can't get all of the goop out of the felt that the type bars rest on. Is there a special felt I need to use to replace it with or will the felt pads from Wal-Mart work? Love your work!
Just serviced a Hermes 2000 that had layers and layers of petrified wd40 and nicotine. Had to resort to perchloroethylene. Scary stuff as it cannot touch any plastic or rubber without melting it. But man does it melt oils and grease, like instantly. I used to use disposable plastic pipettes with perchloroethylene. It’s so strong, if left in the pipettes they’ll melt into a plastic goop. I send this video to my friends as why they should stop using WD40.

On a recent video you worked on a SCM Secretarial and mentioned the carriage slam. Was that unique to the Secretarial, or was it all across the Corona power returns?
The carriage returns are all designed the same, but it does seems the 2200 & 2500 models the violent action is tamed some, probably due to the case design being all plastic. I just got a 210 model that SCM added a switch that only engages during a carriage return that speeds the motor up even faster, for I guess an even faster return . .
I have a Hermes 3000 that was absolutely frozen solid with what I suspect to be WD40. After flushing over and over I have a handful of stubborn sticky keys. I get them loose and any remaining gunk resets
Keep flushing and most critical is force air blow out , try to get that gummy old oil out of the pivot. Stronger chemical, stronger air, repeat. let sit 24hrs, try again.
Thank you for all your videos, they have been really helpful to me & my typewriter journey! I was wondering if you would mind me featuring a short clip from this video (less than 5 seconds) in a comedic short video I'm making about typewriters (it's also a satire of the "Murder She Wrote" intro/theme song, but mostly it's just making fun of how nobody knows how to use a typewriter anymore despite the wealth of knowledge on the internet, like your channel). I can send you the video first if you want (should be done in a week tops) and of course I will link to your channel in the comments. Let me know and thanks again!

Great video, Duane. Question: what chemicals (if any) do you apply to the segment after a thorough cleaning with lacquer thinner? Thank you.

What kind of tip do you use when using the lacquer thinner and what type of bottle? Great videos! Subscribed rang the little bell too!

Unless that Hermes has been severely damaged in shipping/dropped it should be repairable
Thanks for the video. When (if ever) do you recommend using a segment knife before chemicals?
Corrosion, rust, heavy debris, yes definitely time to use a segment pick.....

Nothing special, what ever you can find, other smith corona models use a hard rubber
so even surgical or automotive tubing would work

What do you call the gadget that blows air please?
Air compressor, High Compressed Air.
