    The main thing about the manga I don't like is Kaiba being a cheater. I always liked the aspect that Kaiba was an arrogant asshole with the skills to justify his arrogance. Having him be a cheater, like so many other cheaters in the yugioh series really flies in the face of that.

    • @Shugunou
      @Shugunou 7 месяцев назад +23

      He's only really a cheater before the mind crush. He does threaten suicide in order to beat Yugi but that was because he believed it was the only chance he had to save his brother. Other than that, I don't believe he cheats even once. It shows that Kaiba's evil truly is gone, even if he is still a jerk and makes the DSOD movie more meaningful as Aigami/Diva still believes Kaiba is evil because he cannot see what Yami sees.

    I think YGO Duel Monsters ruins most characters' development by starting in media res. I felt that even watching as a kid. The biggest offender is Kaiba's duel against Yugi in Duelist Kingdom. Do I believe Manga Atem would be willing to kill Kaiba? yes. Season 0 Atem? Probably. I never bought that Kaiba was in serious danger from DM Atem because the antiheroic elements of his character were not adapted or seriously toned down. When they tried to go back and flesh out kaiba's backstory in the Virtual World Arc or Atem's inner darkness in Waking the Dragons, it feels like they are developing backwards.

  • @swhawk
    @swhawk 7 месяцев назад +12

    Before watching the video: Wow, that's an unexpected take. Personally, I think the anime showed a lot of favoritism towards Kaiba. He is at the focal point of the anime-exclusive (aka "filler") arcs, and he also gets a major role in the last arc, while he was completely absent from it in the manga. The exploration of his characterization from the manga (particularly the early arcs that the show skips over) is now spread out throughout the "filler" arcs, which is a treatment that other characters in the main cast did not get. So I got to wonder how exactly was Kaiba done dirty.

    • @saklee1777
      @saklee1777 6 месяцев назад +4

      Kaiba was done dirty cause they messed up his character emotionally. I actually find villains that turn good rather interesting, but usually when they have those in shows and books, they don’t last long and it’s close to the end of the story. That’s why I love kaiba. Because they actually showed him really change and learn and grow.

    "Why Seto Kaiba is not just a cold-hearted tycoon. While the anime presents him as a one-dimensional antagonist"
    You what, mate? The Toei anime, yes(though I also enjoyed just how much they played into it. He's an absolute menace and they even make it ambiguous if there is any good part of him left), but the Gallop Anime straight up tried its hardest to make him sympathetic and a legit good guy. The dimensions they stripped from him ARE specifically the ones that prevented a chunk of people from appreciating the character concept.
    While there is obviously a place for an actual adaptation of the manga(I mean, it is the original work afterall), I can't really see this whole idea as anything besides "Diffrent, therefore ruined". It is just another take of the same concept, one that they put a lot of effort in too since nearly every filler arc heavily depends on building up his character and giving him really juicy extra content.(Though the end of Doma kinda messes with it, but that's a "second half of Doma failing by making Kaiba Corp not actually responsible"-issue and not a Seto Kaiba-issue)

    I think the KC Grand Prix is worth bringing up in regards to Kaiba's character. In fact, except for Orichalchos, anime Kaiba actually gets a _lot_ out of the filler arcs. (The problem with Orichalchos for Kaiba is that Amelda wanted to make some big stink about Seto being like Gozuboro, where Seto was trying to explain to the painfully thick doofus that he _knew_ his stepfather was a huge piece of work and didn't need some off-brand Gundam protagonist to spell it out for him. The Orichalchos arc was such a tire-spinning waste of time in general, specifically in regards to Atem losing a duel and taking over Yugi's body for an extended period, which basically shoots Yugi's entire final duel in the foot for a number of reasons unless you mentally decanonize it. Also, poor Mai in general.)

    Wonderful character analysis. I'm curious how you'd fit DSOD into this. I know the movie was written by Takahashi, but it almost feels like he watched the anime rather than reread his own manga. Instead of focusing on his childhood dream of amusement parks for poor children, he's still obsessed with getting his rematch with Atem. Even *after* Yugi defeats him and proves he's also surpassed him, the ending of the movie is still just a tease of him trying to settle the score with Atem
    Feels like it sort of ignores Kaiba's last lesson from seeing Atem vs. Marik, and he really doesn't ever learn to move on from the past despite being given reason after reason

    IMO, the subbed and dubbed Kaibas have opposite issues. The subbed version post Battle City leans incredibly hard on Kaiba as a redeemed, honorable, heroic person, and that's just not the impression I got from how Takahashi wrote him (reinforced in DSOD): yes, he's redeemed, more honorable, and even somewhat heroic now, but he's never gonna outwardly ACT like it since that goes against his pride being a core flaw he can't get past. He wouldn't be so civil, he'll always be more tsundere about it: behaving like his usual jerkwad self while doing good in the world and respecting his worthy opponents like Yugi. The dubbed version captures his personality way better...but as this video points out, it comes at the cost of his development. Yes, it keeps him more of a jerk, but it does so in the exact same situations "rar, you're a loser", "it's all about me", "I don't believe in this mumbo-jumbo fairy tale stuff!", and it gets tiring. So in the end, neither Kaiba quite measures up to the original manga + DSOD version.

    • @rob19ny
      @rob19ny 7 месяцев назад

      There's nothing dirty. You missed the fact that Yuugi Ou means Game King and Yami Yugi is the titular Game King who defeats enemies in various games. He's not suppose to lose. Even in his 1st duel with Pegasus, he had the game winning attack, but the timer ran out before the attack connected. That was just to get Yami Yugi to come to Duelist Kingdom. Even in the final duel vs Yugi, he outplayed Yugi. He would have won had he summoned Ra instead of Obelisk since Obelisk did 1000 dmg while Ra (6000 atk due to 3 2000 atk The Tricky) would have done 3000 dmg to drop Yugi's LP to 0, but because Atem has to lose to end the story, Takahashi makes Atem summon Obelisk to continue the game. Takahashi making Yami Yugi the Game King always meant that he could never make Yami Yugi lose naturally by being outplayed by someone. Back to rivalries. You must be blind. In every game Yami Yugi faced Kaiba, Yami Yugi had to make a comeback because Kaiba was too strong. Not once did Yami Yugi have the clear advantage. Their last duel at Alcatraz was the most even game they played as they each kept countering each other. Yami Yugi actually didn't need to make a comeback by drawing a card. He had Kaiba beat with the cards he had on his field and hand when Ultimate Dragon was summoned. As a rival, Kaiba doesn't need to win. He needs to show that he's the only one who overpowers Yami Yugi to the point he needs to bet his life on his next draw.

      @@rob19ny A protagonist that's never supposed to lose is basically admitting that he has plot armor and that's never a good thing. It would be one thing if the show was more based around the fact that he never loses, but that's not the case. Why have these battles with stakes if you know he'll never lose? There's no walls to overcome and it tanks the stakes with that in mind.
      You know what was a good example of Yami Yugi losing? When Bakura literally took his puzzle and left him falling into a crevice. More things like should have happened throughout the series to show that the main character isn't infallable. A good opportunity to this would be losing to Kaiba fair and square in Duelist Kingdom, which wouldn't have changed much in the grander outcome because he lost that duel anyways and it would have established an air of uncertainty for the rest of that arc.

    • @rob19ny
      @rob19ny 7 месяцев назад +1

      A protagonist that's never suppose to lose because they are the HERO and titular GAME KING of the story meaning the best at what they do is always a good thing. It's quite clear that you're a anime only watcher, specifically only watching the Duel Monsters anime and not starting with the original Toei anime and checking its website where they explain the Episode 1 story calling the one who awakens from the Puzzle "Yuugi Ou" (Game King), who has never read the source manga or any of Takahashi's interview.
      Takahashi's interview with TIME Magazine in December 2002:
      "TIME: How did the idea for Yu-Gi-Oh come to you?
      TAKAHASHI: I've always been obsessed with games. Certainly as a kid, and even today, I like blackjack and board games like Scotland Yard. In a game, the player becomes the hero. And that's the basic premise for Yu-Gi-Oh. The main character, Yugi, is a weak and childish boy who becomes a hero when he plays games.
      TIME: Yu-Gi-Oh has been called the next Pokemon. What has turned it into such a monstrous hit?
      TAKAHASHI: The thing about the card game is that you can't play by yourself. You have to play with friends. That's how it spread: one kid saying to another, let's play Yu-Gi-Oh. As far as the manga story goes, I think all kids dream of henshin -- the ability to turn into something, or someone, else. Yugi's henshin into a savvy, invincible games player is a big appeal [to children]. There's also the mystery surrounding the games and the characters on the cards. Kids like that, too."
      "You know what was a good example of Yami Yugi losing? When Bakura literally took his puzzle and left him falling into a crevice."
      The more you talk, the more you expose yourself. Thanks for confirming you also don't comprehend what you are watching. That's not a good example of losing because if you comprehended anything the story showed, you'd know at that point Zorc Necrophades said that he rewound time to help Bakura so that the true events can unfold because he (Zorc) has to face the Pharaoh at the end, but this time win in order to return to life in the modern world. The Pharaoh literally did NOT lose when Bakura took the Puzzle.
      Let me make it clear for you to comprehend: Yami Yugi is a hero like Superman. Superman isn't suppose to lose due to his abilities, but that doesn't mean he won't face someone multiple characters who will put him near death. That's called adversity. It happens in every story because it'd be boring if no one gave him a challenge to overcome.
      "A good opportunity to this would be losing to Kaiba fair and square in Duelist Kingdom, which wouldn't have changed much in the grander outcome because he lost that duel anyways and it would have established an air of uncertainty for the rest of that arc."
      Like I said, the more you keep talking. I told you that Yami Yugi is the Game King (the title of the series) and you still say Kaiba should defeat him fair and square. You don't even understand the impact of what you're saying. I know I'm wasting my time talking to you, but this is all for a future reader who wants to be educated. Because you haven't the source manga and only watched the butchered Duel Monsters anime that left out important story scenes, you don't know what happened to Yami Yugi after losing the timer duel to Pegasus. In the source manga, the next day at school, Yugi tells everyone in class he's not bothered by the fact his grandfather is inside of a tape. Yugi tells them he can feel Yami Yugi is depressed. Shortly after, Yugi just randomly gets up to leave the class while everyone is talking and they ask where he is going. He says Yami Yugi wants to be alone for awhile so he's going on the roof. On the roof, Yami Yugi is punching the fence and yelling Pegasus. He's pissed and hurt that he put Sugoroku (who he thinks is his grandfather at the time) in that situation. Yami Yugi then makes it his mission to defeat Pegasus and save him. Duelist Kingdom is about Yami Yugi's grief and that he's on a mission to save Sugoroku. Yugi on the other hand has not shown any emotion for his grandfather. Kaiba just woke up from his 6 month long coma a day ago. After Kaiba tried to kill everyone at Death-T 6 months prior, no one (reader) feels for him. Kaiba hasn't done anything. He literally skip to the castle. We watched Yami Yugi beat his foes to reach the castle. The most logical scenario is that Kaiba asks Yami Yugi to save Mokuba for him because Yami Yugi saved Mokuba before during Death-T and showed he cared for him, but he's Kaiba, so he won't do it because pride. Now it becomes a battle of 2 people facing each other to save a family member. Who wants it more? Kaiba has no right to outright beat Yami Yugi, the Game King, who has been on a mission to defeat every opponent to reach Pegasus. As the Game King of the story, he is only given 1 loop hole loss (timer reaching 0 before game winning attack connected). After that, he has to win all of his games to reach Pegasus, which he was going to do, but then Yugi comes out and surprises everyone but the reader by choosing to save Kaiba over his own grandfather (Yugi hadn't shown any emotion for him so its not surprising that he could make a easy decision) to add a twist to the story. By having Kaiba outright beat Yami Yugi, you negate the fact that he's the Game King and you negate his emotional journey/mission to save Sugoroku.
      I expect you to say "I'm not reading all of that", which is why I stated earlier this is for the future reader who wants to be educated.

    Even the manga did him very dirty during Battle City, with him reverting some of his Duellist Kingdom character development so hard that it's noticeable even in the anime which undercut that development. Takahashi wanted him to go out on the note of one last duel against Yugi so hard that he sanded off some of his character to make it work, and he did it twice, because he also rewrote his character development from Battle City in DSoD again to force him to want a rematch.
    Mai says she'll comeback but the movie doesn't give her closure she desperately needs, while Kaiba had his closure ripped away from him thrice.
    I really want to see the duel between Yugi and Kaiba who believes in the heart of the cards, but instead we have their Coliseum duel in the finals which at least in the anime is the most boring and drawn out duel in the franchise still.

Although I hate the writing decision to write him out all the final duels against Noah and Dartz

      I disagree. I think it's perfectly logical for Seto to not become the good guy immediately. He starts as absolute psycho who is fine with killing his own brother. Then he's no longer a psycho, just a little extra and very prideful. Then he channels old Seto one last time, gets crushed and hears from Yugi how for a guy who always talks about future he's awfully obsessed with the past. I think at this point his perception of Atem shifts from an enemy to a rival to a sort of friend. Which is why when Atem departs for the afterlife, Seto seems to slip back into his own persona. But this time it's not out of hatred or jealousy, but out of desperation - he wants to get his closure the only way he knows how. He doesn't hate Yugi and clearly starts to respect him after their duel (and according to Takahashi they even become soft of friends as well after the movie), but he needs to see Atem one last time to finally move on.

    Personally, I prefer anime Kaiba. It is a shame that the anime loses out on his relationship with his father, and the manga is wonderful too and connects to 0, which is great. However, manga Kaiba isn't as unique as anime Kaiba.
    The idea of a mostly static character that is a selfish, prideful dick sounds awful, but you can't help but love Kaiba anyway due to his execution and positive traits. He's so completely true to himself and he's slow to change because he's prideful to the point of arrogance. He's bombastic and fun and so into his own things that others end up getting into them too. Plus, he isn't a cheater so much easier to respect him.
    Lastly, I do think the idea of the mind crush changing Kaiba so much is ultimately a bit flawed due to being so abstract, so all things said and done I prefer pretending it did nothing.
