I had a lot of fun working on this one - I was surprised, in truth. I was never really that interested in the Hive, perhaps because from a gameplay perspective, I hate them (wizards!) but now from a story perspective, I find them one of the most interesting enemy factions. The video footage is of my first ever run in the Crota raid. But what do you think? Please let me know in the comments!
Next up? The Vex.

She has a large selection of game-inspired apparel featuring her art that you can pick up! Such as the thumbnail pic of Eris not appreciating Omnigul's karaoke, which you can grab on shirts, phone and tablet covers, stickers and more!

Eris: In it's dying breath, the traveler released the ghosts, to open doors
I love that line
I love that last bit of dialogue from Eris.
Good one, Bungie. I like the self-awareness there.
I like Eris. She's got that humorous feel to her which is strange as she's lost pretty much everything.
Great job! With quality like this you could be giving most larger destiny channels a run for their money. I really look forward for more destiny lore videos.
From a threat prospective, the hive would be on the top of the list in my opinion, just by how creepy they are.
Yes, and the Vex at an uncomfortably close second.
dude that insect line tho...
Just noticed, in the Sword of Crota mission, the 3 Swarm Princes are '...., Xul Prince', '....Yul Prince' etc
i never knew silver mont did destiny lore
Yup! Destiny really needed it seeing as their idea of lore was "go read this on the website."
ogres are mutated thralls. acolytes are young knights
kinkas khan Then maybe Squire is a bit more fitting for Acolytes
In retrospect, Eir, Ur, Xol, Yul are worm gods, who the Hive effectively sold their souls too to become powerful. The fifth is Akka. I like how the lore was referencing this stuff way before it revealed.
Enjoyable as always! Great job.
JoJo Binks Thanks!
Silver, you are without a doubt the best Lore RUclips going. You have the voice of a true bard.
I loved your dark souls vids and am going to love your destiny ones.
Could you maybe do one on the Ahamkara? They are without a doubt one of the most interesting lore snippets in destiny.
"Reality is the sweetest flesh oh bearer of mine"
Cirac1 The Ahamkara - that's the race of creatures that the Guardians decided to wipe out, right?
Yeah, they are dragon like creatures. From what I can gather from the Grimoir cards, they offered secrets and knowledge to guardians - namely warlocks. Because the tower couldnt control the information the warlocks were seeking from them they deemed them a threat and ordered them wiped out.
There are three maybe four items that have descriptions from them:
- Skull of Dire Ahamkara, Warlock Helmet
- Claws of Ahamkara, Warlock Gloves
- Young Ahamkara spine, Hunter Gloves
- Voidfang Vestments (Maybe), warlock chest armor.
It seems like they might be void creatures that tempted warlocks - even the item descriptions from their armor pieces seem to be talking to - persuading the guardian.
Skull - "Reality is the finest flesh, oh bearer mine. And are you not...hungry?"
Claws - "Look at all this life, oh bearer mine. There is so much left to burn..."
Spine - "Give me your arm, oh bearer mine. Let me help you fill the world with teeth."
The spine makes me think about the voidfang vestments - "YOU WILL DREAM OF TEETH AND NOTHING ELSE" - scratched behind a buckle"
i thought of something during the taken king raid all the enemy you fight that are guarding oryx throne might be his other children that haven't ascended yet so they are knights, acolytes, thrawns
you have a voice for movie narration silver, like for real...and now your doing destiny..my other fav aside from souls...hell yes!
South Louisiana Like how Stephen Fry narrated the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, I'm guessing!
I love this. Please do more :D
As we all know now, Eir, Ur, Xol, Yul and Akka are the 5 worm gods. All still alive. We didn't kill Xol, we made it suffer. He is still very much alive. He made the Whisper of the Worm. He made the gun for us to use against the enemies.
Love these Lore videos. And you're presenting the Destiny Lore the way I wanted. Sad to say I did not like the game but I was indeed interested in the world it was based out of.
Dreaming Serpent Yeah, I'm enjoying Destiny for the most part, but I think they kinda goofed with the story - hiding most of it away in the grimoire which can't be accessed in game was a bad move, in my eyes.
Silver Mont Thank you too.
Yeah, well I was sort of in a disadvantage because I'm not exactly a big shooter fan, much less a multiplayer fan (Human Contact? Ngh!)
But I was very intrigued with Destiny and the world it was building. I am totally in love with the concepts of Science Fantasy but I rarely think it's executed well. So I was interested to wanna play this game and be part of this world.
To try and sum it up in a nutshell... Meh the game felt incomplete to me, both in gameplay and in story. As you said, important key story sections feel cut out or not included, and rather then expand on world building it feels like they just keep moving forward on a linear path.
No to mention the endless slew of DLC. If I payed full price for a game already, I should have my money's worth, a lot of stuff felt like it should of been in the released game but now weren't.
So I was again a bit annoyed by being tricked by the Triple A Market again.
But this Lore video has peaked my interest in the series' story so far. So much so I might even consider paying for the expansion and playing some of that extra DLC... I might ^_^
Good insect analogy!
I can't believe that I have never seen anyone compare the Hive to the Flood from Halo.
Oh for real? I figured everyone did it
I know this is an old comment, but the hive are nothing like the flood. The Vex are more similar to the flood, but even then, the flood have sentience, whereas the vex do not
The guardian army was actually around 500-1000 guardians
The Hive remind me a lot of the Necrons from Warhammer 40k
The hive are coming!!!😱
WAITWAITWAITWAIT!
. . .
Oryx? Oryx is a woman?! Eesh, seems the males got the 'pretty genes' of their species
Eris is the Greek god of chaos.
6:46 You better not forget to equip the Bond of Artorias.
Look mom, I have a sword!
Living planet? Oversoul? Notice how it's always bleeding.
They should add another DLC where the Vex and the Hive join forces, think about it space and time.
VelstryoxDP I think it's fortunate that none of the enemy factions much like each other. Good for us, at any rate! At the same time, I don't really understand why Guardians don't team up with the Cabal.
Silver Mont or why the fallen don't just nuke the last city, we know they have them :/
Silver Mont I was thinking about this too! Cabal seem most "human", and if we were to have been able to communicate with the 'War Rhinos' in some way, we would fight back the Darkness. A Ghost fragment mentions they may fear something, and I think that something is the Darkness. I do not believe they carried Darkness on them, unlike the Vex and Hive, and much like the Fallen. I think the Fallen and Cabal are the least willing to cooperate with the Darkness, and the Vex and Hive carry it on them, the Vex in religious zeal and methodical terraforming in the form of mechanical landscapes. And the Hive with pride, for their own Gods and their triumphs.
***** THe most probably is the Cabals cooperating with the guardians, because the Fallen Respect and follow the Darkness.
That something that the Cabals fear can't be the darkness because why would they flee to a solar system where the Darkness is Raiding? I think that the Cabals run from other kind of thing, like a new race that we didn't saw until now.
Maybe they appear on Comet expansion or at least a few more hints
FinishingAtol4 I think the Cabal could be running from the Darkness in that they believe there is something in our system that they can use to fight the Darkness. Enderworlder theEnderlord Yup, I remember thinking that at one point. You know the Ketch? The giant ships the Fallen have? You crash ONE of those into the city and it would be gone, wiped out. So why don't they? Is a ketch too valuable to waste? Or does the city have insane anti-air? Maybe they have perma-super Gunsingers sitting there sniping everything with golden-sniper-guns! Or maybe Warlocks nova-bomb spamming.
The stranger wants to end oryx
I don't know. I'd Wizards can come in both flavors. Seeing as how some have breast like protrusions in their armor.
+codafett Well, we've recently had some pretty interesting info, what with the release of TKK - Oryx was originally a female. This new info changes uh... well, it changes a lot of things and clarifies a lot of questions I had here! I'll probably make a follow-up video soon.
my theory is that eir, xol, and yul are the worm gods (worm gods: the gods that grant the hive with the worms the worms give the hive there dark magic.)
+enderboss weekly gaming videos Yeah, the new info available with BoS more or less confirms that theory - back when I made this, we didn't know nearly as much as we do now.
I should start reading then.
I really do like the lore in Destiny, although I feel like it's far to obtuse though. Also reading through Grimoires is not that great. This was a neat explanation of things and it was nicely presented. Keep up the good work, even if this might be an older video.
junker154 I agree! The setting is an interesting one, they just aren't taking advantage of that. "Oh I like this, I better stop playing and read about it on a website" is very immersion breaking. And I've got one more lore vid planned for Destiny (for now, at any rate) on the Vex.
Good to hear, I feel like they created a very unique and fascinating universe but they did not fully develop it, there is actually much to discover. But it's so hidden and like you said, reading some wall of text on a website is boring. I wish the game would let us explore the universe even more. Apparently Bungie took a lot of inspiration of the Souls franchise, I do believe that they wanted to create a similar feel but didn't exactly know how to create such an interesting and mysterious world.
Maybe the reason we guardians do not die when killed is because maybe as guardians we too have the power to live in a transcended realm where we can be properly killed, but we are unaware of it. Maybe the traveler did this to us to make us unstoppable. but that then brings the question, were the hive too given this power from the traveler or did they learn this another way? ( this is just my speculation )
+matty bill It seems like the Ghosts are the key to reviving us, one way or the other. That, and we're kinda like zombies.
Silver Mont, you neglected to mention the tie between The Hive and The Void. The void warlock entry says this:
" The Traveler came out of the void that surrounds all things. Thus we know that the void is full of power. Thus we enter the void without fear.
Small minds will call your abilities blasphemous. They will compare you to the abominable Wizards of the Hive.
But you will not be held back. Gifted with the Traveler's Light, armed with the secret physics of a lost age, you will tear reality asunder.
You will fear nothing, and nothing will not fear you."
Here it mentions that smaller mind will compare the void walkers magic to that of the Hive wizards, not only that but it says here that the traveler came from that void, which is full of power.
It's clear that we enter another realm or dimension of sorts when we fight Crota. Not only that but the Hive remind me of the creatures out of the work of H.P Lovecraft, same as the vex. These beings from beyond the realm of understanding that redefine what humanity conceived as possible, that don't just challenge the reality we perceive but seemingly have the power to alter it.
In short, I believe the Hive come from the void. I believe that the "power" of the void is these alien super beings, who's power would easily rival what preconceptions about diety's we have. This holds true if what is said here about the traveler is also true, that it too, came from the void.
That said, the void could simply be a very flavorful way of saying "space". I'm however inclined to believe that the Traveler has interacted with our enemies in some way, shape or form. It doesn't make sense that these various, somewhat unrelated fractions would be chasing this thing across space and time, literally.
I strongly recommend you check out destiny-grimoire.info/, it's the entire grimoire in one place. It's my first stop if I ever need to check if my cracking theories hold any merit.
Matthew Broseph I was of the impression that the "void" was just representative of space itself. Solar obviously representing the sun, void "the black nothingness between stars" and arc... well, perhaps the energy that moves atoms and sparks life, I dunno. I do think the void means space, though. Thanks for the link, though! That's pretty handy. So far I've been going from what grimoire cards I personally have. Which is what caused the delay for this video, as I had to actually take down Crota before I could start working on it, as I wanted to make sure I had enough grimoire stuffs.
You are most welcome, and I am inclined to believe you, as I could only maybe tie Solar to something deeper than "It's the fire Element". I am not sure if it has the Crota cards as of yet, but it is being updated from what I gather. May be handy in the future. Cool stuff in there about the races, things they don't tell you in the game. I hope we see more on the Last Word vs. Thorn stuff, and definitely more on our boy Toland. He went down there with Eris and her team, but according to her she's the sole survivor. Was he exiled before they went to fight Crota? Or did he survive? He must have, as he would later go on to involve himself with the Vex, which as popular myth holds, led to his disappearance. What's also troubling is that one of the pieces from the raid talks about how Toland was disarming a rune, or led them to believe he was. He had a piece of gear before the stock change for the vanguard and crucible that had a quote from him. "Nobody comes back the same." Could be quite telling if you believe Eris is lying, and her team simply failed their mission rather than died. Not only that but apparently the sorrows (?), or the group that she's in now? They're Ikora's personal black ops team or something akin to that. Her title is "The Bane of Crota" I believe, and it makes me wonder if there is a sorrow for every menace like Crota, such as Atheon. Or if this collection of people is dedicated to the Hive pantheon.
Regardless, I'm taking up too much time. Great video, man, as always. Keep up the great work.
This is kinda unrelated to the vid but does anybody else notice that Eris praises the sun sometimes or is it just me ? ;o
Wait, she did?
Why havent u made one of the Cabal
+Endy173 ender There wasn't really enough information about them until the release of the Taken King, and even then, as much as I like the Cabal... I think I'd rather wait until they get a DLC/expansion of their own.
That, and these videos take quite a lot of time and effort and don't really pay off in the end, unfortunately.
Because, no matter how dumb they are they are masters of secrets.
This the first of many Destiny-related lore vids, right?
AlphosLeo Not the first! I've got a lore vid on the Fallen, and I've got a few other Destiny videos up, although most are just silly gameplay things. I plan on doing one video on each of the enemy factions though - Fallen, Hive, Vex and Cabal.
Silver Mont I was hoping you'd say there was another.
Was that thing at the end real, or fake? I can't tell
real, it has a low chance of happening on the omnigul strike.
Its real eris sometimes says it on the omnigul strike right before the first encounter with omnigul when youre opening the door
Drake360 It's real. I've only seen it happen once - I think maybe it only happens the first time you open the door, but I don't really know what causes it. (Either that or I do a VERY good Eris impression)
this was released before the Taken King released. So there is missing information.
+TrooperBoot Correct
+TrooperBoot Check out my lore videos on Oryx, for that!
Eir, Ur, Xol, and Yul might be the other races.. like human, vex, cabal, and fallen. Especially if they used the flesh of Xol, but I like the god idea better.
Skylar McKelvey That's a pretty good possibility, too. Toland thinks they are the names of planets, but "flesh of Xol" would imply otherwise. I could see it being the other races - but we don't really know "where" Toland is hearing these words. If they are prevalent in chanting etc, then I would assume they are gods/figures of worship. As the Hive do seem to hold religious fervor for their higher beings.
You forgot the death singer
ghost59able I mentioned Ir Yut, didn't I?
Silver Mont ahhh. I am use to hearing the death singer. Not her full name. XD would be cool to be able to sing someone's end
Can you do cabal next
Dakota loftin Vex next! And then Cabal.
I fucking love you
Hey Alex, have you played Warframe?
Blacksun67899 I think I played it for about an hour or so, back when I got my PS4
Silver Mont What did you think about it?
Blacksun67899 It seemed all right, yeah. It was around the time Destiny came out though, and I found that more interesting as Warframe had a lot of the classic "F2P" things that I find off-putting.
Silver Mont Like how you have to wait a whole day for something to finish crafting?
Blacksun67899 I don't think I even got as far as needing to craft something, but yeah that would do it haha
You missed out Xyor the Unwed, who is the hive reincarnation of Dredge. Yor.
Ninurtah RS You're right! I forgot about "Thorn Bounty Witch." Which is weird as I was talking about that exact mission not long ago.
Silver Mont it happens. :P
Just thought it'd be something you'd include since it shows that the hive aren't born, they're made
Ninurtah RS Wizzards are female, so I doubt it.
Travis Bewley Nope, it is Dredgen Yor. Read Thorn's description in the grimoire - one of the quotes is
'another stood where he stood, but it was not him'.
Also Thorn was only ever used by one man, and that man became a hive member. We dont know specifically what he became, but thorn has a 'hive master' - ergo, he became Xyor The Unwed.
Ninurtah RS What exactly points to Thorn being used by a hive master? Because there is a card that talks about who yore became using Thorn on a group of humans who pissed him off. Obviously after the Thorn transformation he still looked human enough.
The hive are one of the most creepiest alien races I've come across in science fiction
Maybe it's because how they look and their autonomy, methods and culture
Look at the dreadnought and those hanging prisons, and that oryx is older than mankind itself, and just everything about them
Also, how they wish to wipe mankind off
Well, I guess I'm not the only one who thinks the hive are creepy
+adonis-the-alchemist Right? I found them pretty creepy too. A little odd how "humanised" they became through the Books of Sorrow.
+Silver Mont plus, did you know that the hive originated from a gas giant named fundament
There, they lived on the atmosphere, where they called it the "fundament ocean"
Basically, the hive crashed their home planet into fundament, and the shards of their world became a number of continents that floated upon a sea that is the fundament ocean
But then, there were hundreds of other intelligent civilisations already living on fundament, and one of them, the ammonites was being overseen and protected by the traveller
So, you guessed it
The hive destroyed the ammonites, the traveller escaped and the hive had begun their leap into the fearsome race they are now
There's more to how they were formed, but I suggest you read it for yourself at the destiny wikia
wait up
The ammonites were a spacefaring race that inhabited fundament's 52 moons
adonis-the-alchemist
Yup! I recently made a video on the Hive's backstory.
You forgot Gotra, Eir Spawn.
ghost59able I don't think that one existed when I made this. Did they add it recently? Hell, who even is it? I don't recognise the name haha. (I've not played Destiny in a while, been too busy with other things)
Silver Mont she is the first hive wizard you fight I the game.
The name of the hive just doesn't sound very scary so I came up with my own name for them Vadrigar and has a very sinister and foreboding feel
here's what i interpeted of each races are meant to us;
fallen-democracy
hive-imperialism
cabal-communism
vex-nazlism
No no no the hive are Nazi the cabal are imperialism fallen communism and Vex democracy
Adam Short Vex can't have democracy, they are a Collective.
The hive have the most interesting lore. I would say the vex but in all honesty they're only interesting because of VoG's lore
Hayden Armstrong I thought so too! Until I started making my vid on them, at which point I became rather more interested - same thing happened with the Hive, actually.
Thouse names sound nordic
Of sorts
He talk like kris, toland, and osiris
+Snakeburgler Hm?
Toland, Osiris both exiled Warlocks both condemned for their hunger for knowledge Hive and the Vex one for each they may have been present during The Gap. Aurush, Heir to the Osmium Throne, now Oryx, the Taken King. He(or she) is the Highest not ranking but most tithed to because of his first contact- along with Savathun and Nokris- with the Ahamkara, and as Oryx by himself contact with The Deep, no middle space dragons.
crota is the weakest son of Oryx
First great vid btw
You guys are trying too hard to compare the factions to one another. Don't forget that the vex have made the fallen fight for them at times. The cabal are powerful and all but they would never ally with humans. A race like them will always see us as mere bugs, no matter how strong we are. It is a one track mind way of living and they see themselves in a way that they are better than other races. They only care for their own. The hive on the other hand, imo are truely from "dark". None of the other factions hunt the traveler as they do, nor have we seen the other factions feeding off of the travelers light. The hive are a parasite much like the flood like silver said. They will grow, infest, and control all. However, the vex has a similair goal. To control everything there is. To be the law of the universe itself. In reality the humans best bet would be to ally with the fallen because they arnt the only ones to have "fallen". The humans have too. Otherwise humanities chances of winning a war on 4 different fronts, one with the ability to break time, the other space, another to break physical worlds, and lastly one to overwhelm in numbers, what chance do they have
C.A Noble It does seem a little odd that the Fallen are fighting us - you'd think "the galaxy would be big enough" for the both of them, so to speak. Plenty of scavenge to go around, right?
Silver Mont There nay be plenty of salvage but is it any good? The fallen are described as scavengers as a whole but they are meticulous, and they aren't as dumb as our ghost may like us to believe. I sincerely doubt they are a "force" of the darkness in that they willingly serve as its underlings, however if you were presented with the opportunity to salvage something as grand as the traveler, wouldn't you? Armed with the information that they face threats from three other fractions, it sounds like an easy enough job. Obviously it isn't, with us being on earth and all, but it's pretty clear we are losing. Even with the the fallen fighting amongst themselves and the various other forces who face off against each other, through it all the only people who are very clearly fighting on borrowed time is the guardians. Not only that, but I think the traveler looks very similar to the servitors the fallen worship. Maybe this conflict with us isn't as simple as "Gee that's a lot of junk" and the believe the traveler is a servitor of some sort, something we stole from them. It's not too far fetched to imagine that link, seeing as the servitors serve a very similar purpose as the traveler. They imbue those around them with power and try to protect them, then when they die, the interact with their soul. For us, the traveler doesn't really eat it, quite like the servitors do, but then the fallen have far more numbers than us. Every guardian is precious. For the fallen, the soul of a soldier may be inconsequential if it means reclaiming one of their gods.
Just a theory though.
😦 Jesus help us...
th elore behind destiny is very intersting but poorly manage by bungie , i really like peolple like you who are insterted about it and make videos . in my opinnion the hive are the like in dark ouls they are born from the abyss (or darkness) and their goal is to eat all the light and the traveler is just a torch , i think there will be morethings like the traveler because in various ocasions many people refere to it like "their traveler" not "THe traveler"
Well I like to believe in that theory as well. Also some other videos I've seen state that dark souls was somewhat of an inspiring force behind this game, so I think the hive being the dark that feeds on the light is somewhat of a trueth
When they say "Their Traveler" they are referring to it as a god, not as a being. They are talking about how Humanity blindly worships the Traveler, and whoever is speaking does not.
Silver Mont Could we possibly exchange emails sometime? I would love to add some clarity to your destiny lore videos :) I'm a huge fan
Tristan Coble I got mah e-mail on my about page of the youtube channel, alternatively you can use the PM system etc
i like your videos more than sir wallen.
ghost59able Not sure who that is, but thanks, I think! Assuming it's someone who makes Destiny lore videos though, the more the merrier! I think it's important to get as many different perspectives on things as we can.
Silver Mont he is one of the big. Destiny lore seekers. Of course, I look at least five people for destiny lore. Even looking at the lore myself
Cute accent
+Alex Wing Is it? haha
Yawn... Destiny.
