Practice makes improvement I was nervous when I went to my first tournament I played rec and thought people would make fun of me but everyone was supportive and gave me good tips I’ve won multiple rec tournaments now over my 2 years and moved up to intermediate
Last throwvemver I shot like +14 or something on the tournament and this year I shot -3. I created a game plan this year that really played to my strengths(forehand driver shots, backhand mid/putters, gap priority/making putts opposed to trying to park holes). My overall game is better from me putting in work in all aspects and honing in on my game in general, however, creating a game plan for tournaments that play to your skill sets strengths will help you shoot better tournaments especially over multiple rounds
Played my 1st tournament this year, was nervous going in which was reflected on the 1st 2 score cards. Came back the next day for the final round and decided just to chill and just have fun with it. went 7 strokes lower then the previous rounds.
I was never more than a trail rider.. My anxiety gave me 'Butterflies' up to the flag falling (on the few races I ran).. By the 1st corner I was relaxed and ok... but I found I really only showed any real talent was when Angry.. and I didn't want to ride angry.. (and was too safely consistent) to be anything more. One of the last times I rode the 99YZ250 2poke it was a 60k loop trail ride, probably about 1000 riders, rolling farm hills.. was full throttle cresting hills and landing in the down side probably 30-40 ft long.. decide I should slow down (nearing 50) and ended up off track, and on the realignment, went for an impromptu double.. which I did... but the bike didn't... and a month later.. when I got the "Sprained" wrist checked that necessitated a 1 handed ride back to the pits.. they discovered a chip off my ulna... the bottom diagonally broken off my radius, and 'bits' floating in my wrist... "Was I in any pain"... Meh!. So at 50 I took up DH MTB (casually)... hence my channel.. and now Disc Golf... With mild ADD, Anxiety and Dyslexia (basically we ALL have these, just at a spectrum of levels.. mine are low.. just enough to be annoying/humorous... I have anxiety before a tournament.. BUT... one thing I decided right from the start that helps... DON"T LOOK AT YOUR SCORE! What good would that do... If your behind, Can you then Play better... If your ahead, should you then relax... Instead.. I just try to play as good as I can.. but pull back on risks. I play enough Disc Golf casually to know Risks can have a great result.. but at a low percentage.. Casually I'll risk things as eventually those risks will be a shot I'm used to, and no longer a risk.. but in a tournament, that low return on a risk isn't really worth it. And HEY... I'm a slightly above average player as in I usually finish just inside the lower 50%.. and I like that.. I can push people, I can pull someone up... I can surprise myself.. I can even have a bad day... but not really... I got to play against others .. what's bad about that.. Maybe I blew out... that's on me... hopefully I learned not to do that again... 1st tournament I did was on a 18 hole over 100k from home so only a few practices and a +11 best... The Tournament added 9 holes and my 1st round saw me with a +14 on the 1st round (hey only 3 more for 9 new holes... +9 next... Beat my 18 hole by 2 while adding 9 new holes (Beat it by 4 if you count out the +3 on the new 9.... and +6 on the last round... That's 5 under my best 18 hole (by 7 counting out those new ones)... so I had a lot of personal wins... so I guess that's another thing... no matter what happens... focus on the good bits because who cares about the rest (Unless someone can get a good laugh from it). No one else really cares if you're having an off day, but if your grumpy about it you'll just make it less enjoyable for others (and maybe even yourself)... And if your having a terrible day of it... why not just go for all risk and insane shots... you may stir up a laugh.. and what does it matter if you finish 10th or 50th if you made it fun. [Edit] I forgot to mention I signed up as a MA40 rather than 50+ because I wanted to play the long tees. I like to play on a level field.. I'm going for MA50 this year only for a peer match, after that I'm going back to general population because I can.. I'm not going to win, i'm only 850 ish rated and a 330ft (100m) max so I can afford to go to a tournament to have what all but a handful should be aiming for... to have a great game with a big field, and have a good battle with someone similar. (god help a world where people are similar to me) q8D
Pretty cool that we share bits and pieces of the same story. Your advice is killer for all disc golfers/athletes in general. I think if more people implemented those tips, they would perform and have a much better time during tournaments.
@@TheDiscZone I have a bit of an advantage over some... I'm a jack of all trades, master of none. But that means I know a decent bit about a lot of things.. enough to be a comfortable mediocre in almost everything... So I go in with a "I'm planning to be above average, get in a few stunning examples, hopefully keep a lid on anything stupid... and just enjoy myself. (An example of my spread... 25ish years of IT field support & helpdesks followed by 16 years of Maintenance engineering (I can fix water blasters, generators, diesel heaters.. and built a good part of a 3 way tipper truck.. ). Probably one of my strong points in Disc Golf is... I Always throw from my bad 1st shot (hey they aren't all bad... but if it's inbound and we're casually taking 2nd shots etc, I like a 2nd shot.. but I'll go with that one in the swamp... because I need to practice getting out of that swamp... The result is that I often pull out some stunning Jail breaks... (The other day I was 100 ft back, 40 ft down hill, way left in a gap in the edge of a pine forest with an overhanging branch 50ft ahead up the hill and a pine tree in my reachback... and somehow I contorted a fairly low Hyzer BH flick that was well within C1... because .. well I had been there before... What do you do when your reachback is blocked... I know my (20) discs quite well now (3ish years playing)... I throw them many ways.. often not how they were made to go.. (My Catalyst is overdisc for my 100m arm but very straight... and I use a Diamond to turn right through a tree slot (I've found of all the throws, a big S gets the most appreciation And those long flex Anhyzer overstable put or drop to park shots always get the great comments.. I may not be 'Great'. but I often slip in something impressive... and that's the zone I'm happy in. Another major... In every game I always like to focus on something I did well... Being 'Average' means I can always do something I've never achieved before... The other day I was playing for tags with our local 100 member casual Sunday club round and was 1 stroke behind a great player holding #4 (I average 45-35 which fits perfectly with the 'just above average'.. Played a 2nd round just with #4... and got my 2nd equal best on my local... in windy conditions.... 4 under... and #4 got even... (I didn't want to take his tag, we never mentioned tags at the start, and really I'm not a #4, I'm happy the the unofficial bragging rights. Uhh I guess I could also point out I talk... A LOT... (whicch doesn't help my mild ADD)... The stress of using the PDGA APP doesn't make for a great experience but at least it gets peer review from the other players... I just fear the 'didn't use a marker' or foot fault mistakes but generally I never Jump Putt, and avoid disc flipping... Maybe I'll lift a disc and put my foot in it's place as I do that in casuals but even that I try to avoid.. oooo that reminds me of a good tip... When playing casual.. still try to obey the PDGA rules (with obvious 2nd throw or "Who's counting" casual exceptions because that bad habit can come back to haunt you when Lizard Brain takes over. (BTW. Nice to 'meet' you from half way round the world in NZ).

@@adayonmars6750 That's awesome. The community is pretty friendly, but I'm still glad you had a great experience with your first tournaments
Good timing, I just signed up for my first tournament 👍
I hope it goes well! Have fun.

That's an amazing improvement. I'm glad the hard work payed off. Did you play MA1?
@ I’ve been playing MPO for the past 2 years. Last August-November was just rough period where nothing in my game was connecting in tourneys
@ Ah I see, well if you are ever in the NorCal area, make sure you stop by the shop and we can get a round in too.
