Watase’s analysis of Kiryu is a great look into both of their characters. Kiryu got into the yakuza business because he bought into a misconception that their essentially champions of the common man, which basically molded him into a very noble man living an ignoble lifestyle. The harsh reality of the yakuza drove him out of it, but he holds onto his idealized image so strongly that he’ll let himself get roped back into the criminal underworld so that Daigo, who he knows holds him in high regard, can steer the Tojo Clan in that direction. And yet, those times are always when the biggest conflicts seem to crop up over Kamurocho. From the outside perspective, it’s not hard to get the idea that Kiryu is only interested in throwing hands with the big hitters in the yakuza, and only stays out of criminal business when it’s all quiet and uneventful.
If Watase is on an easy path to the head of the Omi Alliance like he says, then making a name for himself in that position is a top priority. As we can see here, he sees no better way to build a great rep than to lead a victory against their sworn rival clan, especially when the great Kazuma Kiryu, supposedly a battle-hungry monster the Tojo keeps in their back pocket, is back for blood. He doesn’t have any beef with Kiryu as a menace to the Omi, he thinks he’s a beast starving for the next hunt, and tries to appeal to him with his plans to fight the Tojo. In doing so, he reveals this outsider’s perspective he’s built up about Kiryu, all to have it crash against the reality of the Dragon of Dojima’s true nature. Really thought-provoking scene, this is; even if you’ve never seen another Yakuza game, you can tell both of these characters have several layers to them.

Watase’s speech in this chapter is maybe one of my favourite Kiryu scenes in the whole franchise. It’s one of the rare instances we see someone challenge the difference between Kiryu’s lofty ideals of Honour, Chivalry and Decency with the violent, angry man we know full well Kiryu can be. In my opinion, It’s a fascinating direction for Kiryu’s character to entertain the idea that maybe, deep down, a part of him does enjoy this kind of life. A part that he’s been depriving ever since he took responsibility for Haruka in 2005, only letting it out when the opportunity demands nothing less

It's a nice and simple character interaction that plays at the idea of just how blatantly contradictory human beings are. Selfish to a fault, yet valuing ideas and beliefs that serve only to stem the expression of such selfishness.
It's a contradiction that shockingly few stories touch upon, though perhaps for good reason.

Bit of trivia about Watase: He was originally going to be one of the protagonists of this game. However because they already wrote him as a high ranking Omi member, and because they don't like making protagonists as part of the Yakuza the whole game through, they axed the idea in favor of making him a support character instead.

I think Aoyama's introduction is fine. The problem with the villains that come out of nowhere like Jingu is that they're insanely important to the plot but they have basically nothing to their character. With Aoyama, he's introduced early and he's a minor enough villain that he doesn't need to be too deep.

    • @apossiblyhereticalalphaleg3595
      @apossiblyhereticalalphaleg3595 5 месяцев назад +10

Aoyama is fine as an antagonist because his entire purpose is showcasing how power-hungry even those already with power can be. He is a man of endless ambition and clearly not enough raw strength to back it up, so he resorts to underhanded actions against even his own subordinates. He doesn't have a deep ideology, he's just power for power's sake as far as we can see.

    • @Swishyhead
      @Swishyhead 5 месяцев назад +2

And Watase had already pretty much told us that Aoyama's nothing more than a power-tripping toady, so seeing Aoyama live up to that description immediately afterwards actually strengthens Watase's character by extension.

So in case it wasn’t obvious, Watase is a fan favorite for all the right reasons. Like you said he’s basically a second Ryuji but still having his own identity.
And his intro here is nothing short of dope. He casually controls the situation, tells Kiryu that the Tojo Clan is only strong when he’s involved (basically saying what fans have been thinking for years) and if it wasn’t obvious when he grabbed Kiryu’s wrist, his strength rivals the legend himself. So yea, he’s a badass.

Edit: 32:34 So it finally happened! Yeah this game has the same mechanic that Yakuza 4 had where certain heat actions “evolve” once you use them enough times. Aside from this ground finisher, Kiryu can also do this with the wall heat action. They both can actually be upgraded twice, so be sure to keep using them whenever you can! Oh and btw, to do the bounding throw move, you want to avoid doing your double finishing blow, the move only works after you press triangle ONCE during a rush combo. Try doing it after pressing square different number of times, the effect varies!
Also, yes you have in fact seen Aoyama before, in the very first cutscene in fact. He’s the one who sends Aizawa and Morinaga to follow Daigo

This game is where Daigo becomes my favorite Yakuza series character (Besides daddy Kiryu which is one of my top 5 characters in all media)
His character development is amazing to follow and his growth as a man and a leader is charming to witness.
He starts off as a spoiled brat and eventually gets thrown into the deep end as the Chairman of the Tojo clan as an immature rebellious loser. Kiryu disciplines him in place of the late Kazama.
The last game we see him start to really change and grow, taking responsibility and accepting his role. This game really highlights how much he has grown as he is almost a completely different guy. He is mature and highly intelligent, doing everything he can to follow Kiryus ideals as a Yakuza keeping war from happening.
Probably the best thing so far being him going out of his way to make sure Kiryu can live in peace practically sacrificing his credibility within the Tojo to do so.

Kiryu facing someone who seems almost like a slightly more mature Ryuji Goda at this point is kind of interesting since, in a way, Ryuji kind of represented not only a corruption of Kiryu's character as a man with his strength and charisma but lacking his kindness and loyalty in favor of only respecting strength, but also his inner fear of the "Dragon" inside of him being something that only hurts the people he cares about, given how most of his loved ones were dead at the end of the first game partly as an indirect result of his own choices, actions, and status. Now three games later we have a Kiryu who's seemingly fully distanced himself from both the Yakuza and his family meeting Watase who seems to want to be the next Ryuji, and he's egging Kiryu on over how no matter how little personal ambition he has the "Dragon" will always be a part of the Tojo Clan, and in staying away he's just letting Daigo and everyone else fall apart in his absence despite having shown several times over the years that he has some personal investment in the Clan and the concept of Yakuza in general, something Kiryu doesn't entirely deny even if he rejects the notion that Yakuza is *just* about beefy shirtless dudes punching each other to death because it's awesome.

Every villain is always corrupt or resorts to violence and killing. Yakuza aren’t supposed to be like that and is forbidden but as we see, many people are corrupt with power and straight up evil, completely going against what Yakuza stand for.
Being a Yakuza isn’t illegal and MANY run legit businesses. Hell Yakuza offices are just like regular offices with a sign and everything.

@@masteroflight7296the thing that makes Kiryu a bad Yakuza is that he's the head of the clan (or was) with extremely little regard on how it'd affect the power structure. Which rears it's ugly head numerous occasions. Daigo was not ready to fill in his shoes and neither was that dead dude that Kiryu had chosen.
The last "good yakuza" thing Kiryu did was take the fall for his brother over patricade. After that it's him making questionable decisions that confuses Yakuzas, while any good person would understand why he did it. The world of Yakuza is EXTREMELY strict and Kiryu always undermines it. Which, again, would also bite him in the ass.
Nevermind the rest of the Yakuza is literal garbage human beings, that does not make Kiryu a good yakuza himself. In fact, it makes it worse because Kiryu keeps seeing someone fucking around and finding out... And his solution to the problem is to fuck off until he can't ignore it anymore. Abandoning your responsibilities is far from being a good Yakuza, and he has been doing it since he'd declare himself the Fourth Chairman. How are you going to accept the position of power... Then leave your clan to rot?
Far as we can see it, the only time Kiryu actually acted like a proper Yakuza is when he handled loan sharking business in 0 and 1. Even his clothes is an insult to the Yakuza, a privilege he gets to enjoy because nobody's strong enough to tell him off anymore.

Watase is definitely a step up from the antagonists from Yakuza 4. After all, he makes what he wants clear and states the pure facts about himself. He's straightforward, and that's a good thing. I mean, the fact that he cares about the fight and not the money shows how he's someone who actually wants to take action.
And you already figured that he's a lot like Ryuji from 2. Which makes sense, as they both have a goal and aren't going to waste time sitting around waiting for an opportunity. It's better for them to make that opportunity themselves and prove what a true Yakuza is.
Also, with how he wants to fight Kiryu, that reminds me of both Majima and Ryuji. Granted, those two had different reasons for wanting to do so. But you can see how Watase mixes those reasons together well.

Regarding what you said about Aoyama, I kinda like the balance of having both complex antagonists like Nishikiyama, Ryuji, Mine, Kuze or Awano, as well as pure assholes for player to beat up without feeling any regret about it, like Lao Gui, Shimano, Lau Ka Long or Tamashiro, I think it helps more complex antagonists stand out as well. Although I would say there are definitely different levels of satisfaction to beating guys from the second category up, depending on their build up and actions, which might make even purely evil character memorable. Aoyama sadly definitely falls into Jingu's mold, of not having enough build up or impactful evil moments to make him interesting to watch, but series does have some examples of making asshole villains right, even in Yakuza 5, however that's obviously for later.

Watase and Aoyama showing up here really shows a neat parallel about the antagonists in Yakuza, as well as the difference in what they all stand for. Men like Aoyama are scheming, conniving, always planning to be vile to get whatever they want while leaving the dirty work to others; men such as this exist, but they are not someone we take to and are far away from the Yakuza ideals Kiryu follows. They exist to be someone to beat down by catharsis and show why they're thinking is wrong.
And then you have men like Watase, who actually stand for something and are willing to get involved personally. They have actual reasons for what they do beyond getting money and power. If you look at Watase and Ryuji way back, while they intend to rise up, they want to fight Kiryu and the Tojo not for some arbitrary reasons, but for something they hold dear to their code. They are closer to the Yakuza ideals Kiryu follows. They actually challenge him as a person, both physically and ideologically.

Being Yakuza isn’t like in the movies. Many run legit fully legal businesses. Yakuza were originally formed as way to keep the peace off of Japan and fight off crimes and gangs but people become corrupt and join for the wrong reasons and abuse their power. Police often go to the Yakuza for help as they have man power and are also able to do things discreetly. Yakuza offices are also just like regular offices with a sign and everything.
After the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on March 2011, The yakuza sent hundreds of trucks filled with food, water, blankets, and sanitary items to aid the people affected.

I know this was said the episode before, but I need to say it here. Bounding throw is the most BUSTED move in Yakuza 5 and probably in the whole series, if you know how to use it.
Bounding throw has been in the games before, and was still good, but not to this degree. In 3, 4 and even later games like 0 and Kiwami 1, bounding throw required heat and used heat when you would pull it off. This game, you don't need heat to use, it gives you heat instead. Coupled with the improvement to aim your throws makes it really good for crowd control. But that's not what makes it the most busted.
This thing can be used to just murder every boss Kiryu faces. What to shout Froob, an RGG speed runner who I learned you could do this from. I recommend watching him, ONLY IF, you're caught up with the rest of the series, so that may be a problem for you Nico.
Anyways, some of Kiryu's combo finishers can hit enemies on the ground, even bosses. To activate a bounding throw, you need the first of any finisher to hit without activating the 2nd finishing hit. So, even with them being on the ground, you can hit them. The trick is to hit them when they are getting up, the speed in which the get up can vary, but it is doable with every opponent. So depending on the speed, you'll either use Bounding throw 1, or 2. For a better visualization, I recorded myself doing it on Yahata. Don't worry about Kiryu's outfit, this is from ultimate match.

Like I've said before, I have yet to play any of these games myself, only watch them, but, that scene at the bar and that hospital scene are two of the things that made this game more memorable to me than Yakuza 4. I'm not sure what the production history of Yakuza 5 was, but it definitely doesn't feel rushed.

Ryuji wanted to destroy the clan no matter the state..His target was Kiryu,so that there was only one dragon in their world, and his trophy was Kamurocho, he didn't care who he hurt, if they stood in his way, they were expendable. Watase is, like you described, very interested in taking a strenghtened Tojo clan down. Both ways to prove themselves, but both very interesting characters.

Kiryu: Well next time pour it in a glass first before putting your mouth all over it.
Watase: Ok ok I will………. Uh you gonna be ok? You got glass sticking out of your fist.
Kiryu: Ya it’s fine, I’ll go eat at Smile Burger after this and it’ll be all better.

I definitely agree that Watase is similar to Ryuji, with one huge difference: their feelings towards what it means to be a yakuza. Ryuji held active disdain for honour and tradition, running his family like a group of thugs and viewing the entire Omi Alliance as nothing more than the means by which he'd seize power. It seemed almost natural, then, for a man as principled as Kiryu to beat him. Watase, meanwhile, seems to live and die by his conviction that power is meaningless without honour, an attitude we haven't really seen since Kuze.

Watase’s one of my favorites. Offers a drink to his enemy and gets glass and the drink spilled all over him, stays calm and wipes the alcohol, doesn’t attack Kiryu, but lays everything out, Kiryu knocks over the table and Watase gets grabbed by Kiryu and moves his hand away without fighting, and doesn’t send an army of henchmen to the orphanage to threaten him. Part of the Omi, yet is more of a rival than a villain trying to ruin Kiryu’s life because he’s in his way (must be Kansai, because Majima and Ryuji’s also Kansai.) As for Mayumi, unfortunately she was not his Yumi.

Same with villains who are straight up unapologetically scummy and evil but that is part of their charm as they work their role to a T like Kuroiwa from Judgment, Soma from Lost Judgment, Shimano from Y0 and Y1, Kanda from Yakuza 3, Awano from Yakuza 0, ect.
