I adopted a non English speaking child. When she was speaking I would record her - I would say any word she couldn’t and she’d repeat it.
I’d say to record some of your RS lessons and listen to yourself saying the words Yonghong, and compare it to Miriam. Miriam it is also vital that you correct even the slightest mispronunciation - my daughter speaks fluent English as an adult now with no accent. You’d never know it is her second language. We did the sticky notes on things around the house.
My daughter would say things like pick ed .... not picked. Look ed .. not looked. Boo-key instead of spooky. It was very cute, but we knew in order to get on in life she HAD to say things correctly and be understood by any `English speaker. However, we never made it a chore. She’d read a childrens book waaaaay younger than her years and we’d record etc.
The easiest way is by talking, & i hope that soon you will be able to socialise more. In the meantime, tell your husband what the topic is about with ANY convo with your family so he can listen for words he knows. Teach him nursery rhymes from your childhood and simple songs. Things you can do together with your children. Learn things like Twinkle twinkle (or Swedish equivalent) and ‘happy birthday’. Finally get an ABC book ... A is for apple etc. It reinforces the single letter sound.
A few thoughts anyhow! Good luck with it!1

I learned Chinese by watching movies on 爱奇艺. I would watch them in English but have Chinese subtitles. Then I'd write down sentences I found interesting. I also listened to music, which was excellent for my 听力. I liked to listen to G.E.M. and 周杰伦. But 周杰伦他的发音不标准. I also made many Chinese friends who spoke little to no English, which also helped a lot.

At 3:34 I could tell this would be a sponsored video by some language learning company or app. But you know what? I didn't skip because I was still curious and this turned out to be a totally valid and logical way to start a language app. You had a need, and a very well structured reason outlined. It might have been sponsored, but this wasn't an advertisement. I've heard/seen probably 100 ads for Rosetta Stone by now, and this is the first thing that has actually made me consider getting the service.

I am a native Hebrew speaker and am also practically native in English, fluent in Spanish, and intermediate in Russian and German. I used to have Rosetta Stone but was quickly made aware of its limits. I tried learning Spanish via Rosetta Stone and got nowhere. The only thing that taught me Spanish was spending months in Spain talking to native speakers in nothing but Spanish. I eventually married a Spaniard, and his family speak only Spanish, and a beautiful rural dialect as well, so it’s great because I have no choice but to speaking with them in their native language - it’s a blessing. I have never known anyone who developed any fluency through language apps. What people need is language immersion - to speak the living language with native speakers. Language apps are good for developing some familiarity with a language when you don’t have any possibility of immersion in a language. But since you do now have that opportunity in Sweden, make use of it! I can understand that COVID makes it hard to be immersed, but since you are in Sweden for another few months, perhaps Yonghong can chat with your relatives in Sweden even now. Can sit with them for 20 minutes per day practicing basic conversation phrases over and over. Trying to failing and trying again. Getting feedback on his pronunciation from relatives. Even in a few months he can achieve so much. Good luck!

I have improved my English in the speed of rocket by listening to songs and watching the movies that I liked! I could watch one movie over and over again, at first original sound with Chinese subtitles, then English subtitles, then finally no subtitles, just focusing on listening to the way they speak and trying to repeat the words.

    • @pychu9067

Wow, the way you learn is really persistent 👍. I agree that it is easier for most people to learn a foreign language through songs and watching different type of entertainments that one has an interest in. Personally I picked up a lot of English vocabulary and spoken English when I was at high school age by listening to English popular songs, watching English tv dramas and tv news. However I did have the basic English education in kindergarten and primary school as a foundation first.

With adjustments, you can get the best position for sound feedback. With the feedback, you can practice your pronunciation and and other speaking techniques without earbuds or headphones. You don't lose your hands and never forget them which is a plus. Cheers

A great way for language immersion is watching weather forecast from your local TV stations. The vocabs and sentence structures are a lot more predictable and intuitive, with visual support it's getting even easier. You can quickly get a hang of how locals talk. Add some common/widely used words later on to expand his vocabs. Emphasis on communicative traits rather than accuracy, let him feel confident instead of critique his own mistakes. He is young and has a wonderful partner in you. I feel confident with his Swedish. Good luck!

I've been using u guys' channel to keep contact with chinese (I've been learning in college for 2 years), i think similarly yonghong could watch some swedish youtube channels to help him keep contact! I think in the beginning of learning a language the hardest thing is always to force ur brain to get used to the sounds of the language and to start separating where one word starts and where it finishes so u can attribute meaning...
ig he could also watch swedish tv shows and movies, but i like the youtube channels a little better cause the conversation is more natural

I am a language enthusiast and my tip is always to learn by doing everyday things that don't take much of your time. This includes listening to podcasts (Language learning or simply "normal" pace podcasts when level is a bit higher), e g when you do chores, listening to music and try to analyse and learn the lyrics, watch movies/series, find friends from the country with whom you can do language exchange. E g if he meets someone who wants to learn Chinese and speaks Swedish. Engage in conversations with the person, either just chatting and writing short messages once in a while (which is good for practicing small talk and chat language), or if one has more time then video call or meet up for a coffee and dedicate half an hour to each language. Another tip is to watch RUclips videos, follow Instagram accounts etc where they teach in a fun and creative way.
I learned most my languages in these ways, where I never really had to spend any money to learn the language. :) Lycka till Yonghong, 加油! Tycker för övrigt att din kanal är superhärlig!

My native tongue is Hungarian and I came to the US at age 10. I studied German as a child, and lived in Austria for a year, a German speaking country. Yet, after coming to the US, German became my doorway to English. As children, we watched TV and I think listening and watching was my first step into a new language. It helped that German and English had some similar words. It also made a difference that I went to a school where the nuns spoke Hungarian. Another aspect of learning language for me was that I was musical, and innately followed sounds & rhythms to words. I have a good ear for sound, and interpreting what a word is supposed to sound like. I once read that it is much easier to learn to speak another language before a child reaches puberty, since the vocal cords are more flexible until then. Yes, have heard about the Rosetta Stone program, but I myself never had lessons but learned to speak English better than some who are American born because I wanted to sound right. Just my story. Good luck with the learning!

I think patience is very important in learning language, allow yourself to make mistakes and go slow. Also any TV program that might interest him to watch would also be a benefit. I learned a bit of Turkish at one point because I start to watch Turkish TV shows and became a fan of their pop music 😊 these are really good motivations to keep learning

It's quite amazing for Yonghong to Learn Swedish at his age as a Chinese, well I mean, normally it'e even hard to think about it , to learn a new language in someone's 30s (in China). But I believe he will do it, with all his love to the family and his learning mindset. Best wishes!!

I think you guys couldn't be in a more perfect place and time (not including childhood) for Yong to learn Swedish. Being immersed and surrounded by it really is the best way and he has the bonus of being able to learn with the kids at the same time! With you as a native speaker, who desires to have, not just he, but her children to also have the language, it is quite different than "typical" immigrant families where the children pick up the local language while the parents are in a sort of bubble, and sometimes have very limited progression with it.
I, myself, have found that Norwegian and Swedish not to be ... easy, but easy enough that it hindered my (admittedly lazy) German language study at the time. I had to put it off as I was picking it up faster and I had already put a lot of time in the German. I did find it more "fun" to learn, as well, than the German.

One method is not for everyone. I'm a visual learner, so needed to see French words written down. I learnt French this way, not by hearing it spoken. Even when I went to France I went to a language school for that reason. Others learn by hearing words, immersion learning and other methods.

Yonghong already has such an advantage since he is immersed in the Swedish language environment now. I'm learning French and the best way for me is to watch movies and shows I'm interested in. They need to be relevant and fun for me to be motivated. I can't get myself motivated if I had to take a class or watch the news in French. Children's shows are also great because it's basic conversations in everyday life and they enunciate all the words.

At his age, I propose to learn the basics of daily life, ie. conversational dialogue. From these fundamentals he can later learn the formal grammatical rules and sentences. The structured lessons may seem formidable to a Chinese speaking person. I am a Singaporean Chinese managing different languages, hence, we know the challenges he faces.

I'm learning Swedish just for fun, and it's well, really fun. Even addictive, like a puzzle game. It reminds me a lot of old Shakespearean English. Like "varför", which means "why". As in "wherefore", which is also "why".

Hello & greetings from Germany, when my family moved to Germany, I knew formal greetings & how to say it. However speaking fluently or reading was difficult for me learning German language. So I started reading German books from children’s books to novel books & listed words out what they mean in English & by doing so, I reread the book until I knew what they meant. That’s how I learnt to speak & read fluently in German. Maybe this can help your husband speak better Swedish.

Agreed. Immersion. Especially that he actually is in Sweden right now. His relatives are nearby and come often... speaking with them for ten minutes a day, forcing himself to practice and to go outside his comfort zone with them, will teach him much more than any app.

I’d recommend to write en/ett before the noun on the pieces of paper. That’s something that helps in languages with gendered nouns (like French). It just sounds wrong if someone says ”en träd” or ”ett katt” so it would be useful to associate the noun with ett or en

Hi Miri, I am learning Mandarin or trying to, and I found out that it is hard because there are not a lot of books that actually start from the basics where I am now:/ A friend of mine has told me of Coursera, have you tried it by chance? I am not advertising it just fyi. It is free and also very good. I took my first mandarin class with a professor from Beijing located there, and learned some but I did not study writing. I am actually trying to get myself Rosetta as well because it is kind of hard in Oklahoma to find anything of Mandarin language - annoying but sadly true. I am also studying Swedish via coursera but keep me updated how does Rosetta do for you all?!
I am so eager to learn Mandarin, I really want to visit China one day with my husband but deffinatelly want to be able to talk to people too! On another note, you have studied mandarin in China, can you make a video about that experience if you can. Thank you in advance :) Sending a hug and a smile, as always your Bulgarian friend Nat

Congratulations on the sponsorship for this video! I wish that I could afford to get it right now because languages are so fascinating to me. I learn a lot about different cultures through food and cooking.
Edit: I always meant to ask you; is it difficult to switch between the different languages that you regularly use? Do you ever misspeak and use two languages in one sentence? I imagine that I would end up doing that a lot lol.

The Qinghai dialect is one of the hardest northern Chinese dialects. We from other parts of the north don't understand it. A true story: I once travelled to Xining and climbed a small mountain in the city. On the mountaintop a very friendly cleaning lady had a conversation with me. Till this day I'm still wondering whether she spoke Chinese or Tibetan (there are many ethnic Tibetans in the region). I practically understood nothing she said. The difference between Xining dialect and other norther Chinese dialects, and especially Mandarin per se, is probably more prominent that that between Swedish and norwegian or even Icelandic.
