- Sakhile Dube gives information about flap-necked chameleons.
In iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa, we have two different species of chameleons, Flap-necked and Setaro's dwarf.
In the movie he focus his attention on the flap-necked chameleon. He explains about their general anatomy, habitat, feeding habits and of course traditional Zulu beliefs.
The Zulu's belief that chameleons can always see you with their eyes that can turn at a 270' angle. They further believe that the chameleon can shoot you with lightning. This was a clever strategy from the elders to make children fear chameleons in order to protect them as a specie.

I love the way your elders teach, instead of just saying "No, don't do that.", they create a story that stays with you more easily, even into adulthood.
Isn’t that quite common if you think about it? I remember from my childhood, adults would say that if I roll my eyes or stick out my tongue, they might get stuck like that. Obviously, there is no risk of the eyes or the tongue getting stuck, it’s just a way to get children to behave.

in europe we have a lot of folklore that serves the same purpose.
Personally I never liked that, you don't have to lie to kids just to accomplish some minor goal. It's not a big deal or anything, and there's definitely some very interesting regional folklore around the world because of it, but I think basing all your interactions with kids (your own especially) on honesty is by far the healthier approach, even though it's sometimes harder.

That short time spent in Africa and the stories/information (like this video) that my Rhodesian father passed onto me will remain my most cherished memories til the day I die.
Hes no longer with us and what hurts me the most is when the realization sets in that never again will I be able to pick his brain and indulge in his stories or knowledge of the bush.
So finding a channel like this with the content you make takes me back to a time and place in my mind that I will never be able to recreate and for that I cannot thank you enough.

The chameleon steals the show here. I can tell (especially because I've had reptilian pets) that this chameleon isn't very flustered but, like a cat, they are still mildly annoyed 😂 Sakhile, sir, you explain your understanding of both chameleon biology (which seems very accurate from what I know, and I tend to also trust people who have regular chances to observe a given species) and local mythology and culture surrounding these lovely, delicate mosquito eating treasures very well. I like the idea that the elders, understanding how important chameleons are for eating pests, created tales that gave the chameleon great power. It's very elegant. The truth may be less dramatic, but it is still true that chameleons are powerful.

everything about this video was fantastic.
You just told us something extremely interesting about how the elders taught the youngers to not harm the chameleons which are very beneficial to the health of the people.
I remember reading about the earliest humans and how they would teach the youngers with the ritual passing of children into manhood. There would be a formal ceremony and
the young men would be given hallucinating drugs, maybe, deep inside a sacred cave. On the walls of the cave would be the record of their tribe, where and when game would be found
as well as where water could be found. The idea was to scare these new young men so much that they would never forget what they learned. In this way they passed on their knowledge
from one generation to the next.
