Wonderful storytelling. It also easily shares to the children that the hippo is aggressive when you get close (they are embarrassed to be naked). At the same time, the children can learn cultural norms around:
    1) clothing (being naked is shameful),
    2) work ethic (don't neglect your duties),
    3) helping each other (comb your friend's hair),
    4) fire is painful,
    5) not all animals are nice (rabbit did a bad thing),
    6) keep your promises (creator checks)
    7) be mindful of your neighbours (fish and frogs protest)
All wrapped up into an entertaining story. Traditional stories that survive long like this are very valuable and essential to human life.

Reminds me of my grandfather telling us stories of how different animals behave the way they do and so on and sometimes animals used as an allegory for real life. In Zimbabwean folklore the main protagonists were always the rabbit and the hare (rabbit). Baboon was always slow witted, trusting and the hare mischievous, cunning, fast etc. Story telling was done around a fire and it's how the moral code was passed down using stories of devious animals coming to a terrible end and do on

What’s fascinating about this is that when this man tells of how it’s an old Zulu story of how Hippos used to walk on land, the pre cursor species or ancestor of the Hippopotamus called Anthracotheriidae did walk on land! So perhaps this Zulu story has been passed down from generations way back when Anthracotheriidae was still around

You should share or write them down. When I traveled on a long drive with my mamá she told me so much of my family history cuentos. Unfortunately we were driving and not able to write or record. This was for days. Now she is older and her memory is not what it was. This was so precious to me. Since I do not know nor does she what gente we come from indigenous. Due to the fact that the Spanish changed our names forbade our history.
      You are very blessed.

The heart and mind of the youth today misses this and tries to make their own story but not having learned of good things and bad from beloved elders they go forth unruly and confused and make chaos as they wander into darkness. Such souls become easy prey for the evil hunting them.
