Good question. Only thing I could think of was better cooling for the brakes. Not sure how much you'd need that on an EV with good regenerative braking.
There will be no need to remove it yourself as they will be quickly stolen, because someone else needs them? No, just because they can, its so easy and they will. And of course the car manufacturer is happy to sell you another for 50€ (plus taxes) a piece.
No-one's batteries have rare earths in them, except for one manufacturer 15 years ago that put some ytterbium in their LFP cells. So the battery part of that is a pointless claim (except of course that clueless articles claim they do and countering nonsense has become important). No rare earths in the motors presumably means they are using electromagnets throughout, not permanent magnets (as they almost all have neodymium in). I think that's a trend in motor design. PM motors are very good as you get rotor energised without using any energy nor brushes but they do have coasting losses. Being able to turn the rotor off fixes that. Complicated tradeoffs in which is most efficient overall. For powertools PM defo wins. For cars I think it depends on the details.

I loved my old Scenic RX4, it was perfect as an all-rounder for my job in the countryside. I'm looking for an EV now, and hope that Renault will release a Scenic E-Tech with dual motors, increased ride height and possibly a rugged-ish exterior: at this point the only options seem to be the Solterra/bZ4x (too inefficient) and the future EX30 Cross Country (too small).
bZ4X AWD was almost efficient as the Model Y RWD in the big Norwegian Sumer range test (141 Wh/km vs 131) so they are hardly inefficient. Smallish usable capacity yes, inefficient no.
Love it, one of the best looking EVs out there for me and certainly the best from the established western manufacturers. The exterior is a good combo of modern and interesting but not too fussy and the interior looks practical and useable with decent tech. It looks really clean and fresh but also recognisably a car with familiar controls and layouts that are proven and work. (great review BTW :o)

who is telling you that it is an underrated brand, it is an overrated brand, I say this for those who know what a super car is.. ok, have a good time..
Scenic was a sub-model Megane when first introduced. Look at what it has become, awesome! Not sure about these pads in the wheel caps, why not have these fixed?
Or go to the other extreme, and have a split rear tailgate (so you can just open the top half if you want to reach in and get something without everythign else falling out... and then a fold-down lower lip for when you want lip-less access, etc.
I like Renault but there are some big questions not addressed here: 1. UK specs & pricing, plus the big ‘elephant’ projected depreciation ? 2. Heat pump as standard on UK versions (big mistake missing it off Meganes - had to add Iconic)? 3. Infotainment screen - will it be scaled down in UK (like Meganes)?
Not convinced the heat pump is as big an issue as you think. Renault say it adds ‘upto 9% range below 11c’. So an extra 20 miles in the coldest months, only really a benefit on a journey over 220 miles or so.
Very Megane-like, especially upfront inside, which as a Megane E-tech owner and loving it, is no bad thing :-) Over eh summer I've been getting 4'2-4.4MkWh locally and 3.9 on a recent 435 mile trip to Devon. If I had a family I might have considered one had it been available... but I don't and it wasn't so that's that. That grille pattern is interesting, make it look form many angles like its a real grille floating in front. Not sure the white does the shape any favours though. Thankfully its not grey :-( I went with red with black roof on my Megane E-tech.
I probably won't move from my MK3 scenic into this. Agree with Jack about losing the round edge, and also the sliding seat, sliding centre console, picnic table, those family-friendly stuff. Pity that it chose to go down the semi-lux decor, risking someone (about to open a can of coke) shouting 'It's just a couch' after being told 'wait until we get to a service station'.
My 1st impressions are.. that I like this presenter! Appreciate you going into the details with your take on things from the space-saving no-need for sunroof roller mechanism to how an 11 year old might use the backseat! Oh, and the new scenic too of course! Now if only they brought back the +2 seat 💺 3rd row!
Great points you made there. I like the car too. We have had good experiences with Renault in our family, and I believe that this car could be our next one.
I wish it was more Scenic-esque... If they managed to fit the engine in the front, and keep the hood short, I believe they could have done that once again. But then again, it makes sense if it's possible to store even more stuff in the front compared to the combustion engine car, and if it has to take up space, it should be in the front, for safety reasons...
Looks nice! First time I actually saying, this EV Renault looks good and practical at the same time! I hope they will be available on the used car market 8-10 years from now!
Great review as always Jack. The only thing I’d love to see is an ev that’s designed for a family of 5. The Scenic was always that kind of car in the past, but the fancy middle armrest thing seems to have made way for a usable middle seat. That said, it’s a nice looking car with a great range and features.
@rogerphelps9939 Lovely car indeed. I'm currently driving a 2015 Nissan Leaf. Enyaq not quite within my price range yet! I'm more hopeful for more family evs coming down the track into the used market.
I like the way it looks, though as an ex scenic mk2 owner I do wish they were a bit more adventurous. I guess there’s no need to as the packaging looks great. I’m a big fan of what they’re doing though the pricing is a bit too high. Therefore I’ll be hang around the second hand market in 5+ years waiting for the residuals to drop like a stone.
Great job Jack, all the relevant info whilst keeping it fun. I suggest adding battery chemistry to the mix and bringing up that LFP has no nickel or cobalt and lasts way longer than standard lithium ion even though it charges slower would really encourage uptake. This is the wife’s RUclips account but I’ve watched all the segments and shows and promote fully charged at the slightest chance. Best presenters. Love to all. Noel (Sydney Australia)
Love it. Our 2009 Grand Scenic is still going, just tyres and the odd switch at mot, except thanks to Malvern’s roads getting through anti-roll bars! Think they need a road tester?
Ok, they are on to make the wheel alloy more streamlined, that's also why the handles have been made flush, so to reduce drag increasing the mileage. If you want to enjoy the whole alloy design, then you remove them. Simplez-tch.
Scenic used to be great car for family of 3. While the car looks great for rear passengers - it falls in line with all others. Suitable for 2 kids, 3 kids will suffer :(
First impressions good. However, parts of the car do raise questions. . What is real world performance like? If the glass roof cracks, how difficult and exoensive is it to replace (thinking about falling branches and hail storms). The middle screen console is directed too much to the driver. Can it be swivled towards the passenger. With the large cockpit dislay, the middle infotainment screen looks oddly overkill. I just feel like ripping itboff the dashboard. Can the center infotainment screen be removed and the carbsokely operated in the cockpit screen only? Despite the clever explanation of the the car motor compnents on the front, does it have a front boot? Does it have airco? Does itbsupport any form of V2G, V2L or V2H? Does itbsupport autonomous safety features? Is the turning circle good? Etc.
Perfect size, practicality, interior, exterior look. The only question marks are price and depreciation. Will it compete favorably with Polestar 4, Niro EV, Audi Q4, etc., for what is expected to be in similar price range (or slightly less, but likely with steeper depreciation).
Having just watched a video on VW's new Tiguan I have to say they don't come close to this Renault. Not sure that getting close to 4m/Kwh is anything to bragg about when you can get over 6 from a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq
Owner of Ioniq 28 myself, I concur, however they are trying to find a compromise here between range (big batteries), interior space, and decent efficiency with the current techs. So 4.3 miles/kWh is not too bad.
Yup - if only Hyundai offered it with a slightly bigger battery (and yes, i know the extra mass would reduce efficiency, etc - it's a vicious circle)...
@@logicalChimp they did with the 38kWh Ioniq (2020-2022), and it is very slightly less efficient than the 28kWh Ioniq. But they messed up with the charging speed: 45-50kW max 😭. To the point that the 28kWh (which can charge up to 66kW) is faster on long trip than the 38kWh despite more frequent stops. 🤦🏻♂️
I like the new "row of medium sized physical buttons in one place to control everything else" trope automakers are doing now. It may not be artistically daring but its functional and simple enough to fit with any dash design. Once you learn the buttons after driving for a week its fast and easy to use without looking.
Here goes nothing... Hey Jack, any word the Renault's V2G capability? I took myself over to Gridserve in Essex for the Mégane launch and was very well received. My only issue was the black hole around what was going on with the Mégane coming with V2G, as per the pre release information. I mean, why drop (conversation) ~£10k on home battery storage when I can better use that money for the car, and get a many-fold bigger battery as well? Thus, will this scenic come with a V2G or V2H capability? ...along with the all important OEM's bi-directional charger thrown in?? Any snippets of information around when we can expect to start seeing/getting this next evolution of new tech on thr cars would be wonderful 👍 Past that, love ya work. Ya second only to Roberts ABN and Beard meets food 🤣
V2G is something that has been talked about by car manufacturers and energy suppliers as a win-win for everyone, the technology exists and tests have shown it works well... and yet it has stalled and the excitement been allowed to die. A great shame.
@@broadsword6650 Absolutely! I freely admit it was over a decade ago now, but I seem to recall even the Zoe was touted with it. The down side was no one was really sure if betamax or VHS was going to win the day, and well, I for one didn't find that the Zoe worked for my needs, and then... what about the actual bidirectional charger? Fast forward, what, let's say six or seven years and Mégane was definitely touted a V2 capable. I'm 90% sure both Johnny Smith and 'our man' Bobby Lou even said the same in the press release and/or their respective test drives, but! Is it available on the Mégane? Nope. Thus, is it coming on this Scenic or have Renault (and others) simply given up on this technology? ...as a layman in this field/industry, I don't understand what the delay is. Being able to get an inverter to flip the power outta ya cigarette lighter to power ya laptop etc has been around for bloody ages! So using the same basic premise to have ya car output 7kw to power ya house during the day, and charge over night (key: from the same bidirectional charger) shouldn't be beyond the car manufacturers and/or the manufacturer of the car chargers - should it? Yet, other than the wallbox quasar 2 and some VERY! Muted suggestions that Kia, Hyundai and Renault just need to "switch it on" via an over the air update, the general public is left looking at their belly button fluff 🤣
@@matbowden9156 It seems to be an issue for the utility companies rather than the car companies. Vehicle-to-load (for a single appliance rather than a whole house), is available in many EVs, but vehicle-to-grid has not yet been implemented, despite having been possible with Nissan Leaf for years. I know Octopus has successfully trialed it, and the customers involved in the trial say it worked with no problems and it saved them a lot of money. The pandemic seems to have derailed the trial, so fingers crossed it can get back on track soon.
@@broadsword6650 ...be nice to get a Quasar 2 wallbox vs the one that was supplied on the leaf trial though, wouldn't it? I don't think the bottle neck is the utility company myself, more the "red tape" but this is of course pure speculation If you are connected to the grid you've already got a standing charge. If you consume energy, you get charged. So it stands to reason that should you not actually be consuming any energy (you went on holiday for example) you would still get hit with the standing charges, but no (or very little) usage, for keeping ya fridge running, perhaps. Equally, if ya car is powering ya house, so V2H, what does ya utility company care? As long as there is no risk of feeding back into the grid itself (you have to be able to isolate your solar panels) so you don't electrocute anyone, but I'd "guess" V2G takes that up a level, and involves "all the red tape" as that would allow the utility company to set up VPP (Virtual Power Plants) where loads of EV's are strung together and used in periods of high demand. Again, our man Bobby has spoken about this (years ago) so my "guess" is red tape vs technical limitations But! Putting in a wallbox/charger at home is still what, a grand? Probably two these days... So why put in a regular charger if (example) six months from now, I can simply buy the car with the bidirectional charger thrown in as part of sale? Anyway, I feel like we want/are asking the same thing from slightly different vantage points. Let's see if anyone else knows more than us? 👍
@@matbowden9156 I'm having a charger fitted next month. Cost is just over a grand, including fitting. I imagine that it is red tape, as you say, rather than serious technical problems. The cars are ready, the utility companies can make it work, it's just a case of having all the different bits of the supply network talking to one another and agreeing that it's a good to go. But I've been watchingFully Charged and others talking about this for about a decade, have waited for this to be sorted out, and have delayed going EV because of it. I'm not waiting any longer because there's no sign of it being sorted any time soon. If and when it does happen I'll have to spend more cash to upgrade my wallbox
Some great thought put into it alright. Yhat grill needs to go do its just tertible snd looks like its csrrying net on the front and looks like an afterthought. The magic roof do is brilliant and the flip around cup holders with the phone holders too is brilliant.
Pretty sure that was just a paint-effect... you can see that from some of the side-on shots, when the grill would otherwise be clearly separate from the vehicle?
It must be using same tech used in Ariya. The battery sizes are similar. I get around 315 miles on my Ariya e-force at mild weather conditions and a speed of 60-65 miles/hr. Must be same here.
The battery sizes are similar but the tech and aeros are different, that's why this Scenic has far more range than Ariya. But we'll see more about that on the road test.
I am looking at buying an electric car this year and i have selected two cars. Is it possible to get a comparison between the KIA EV6 GT Line vs the new Electric Scenic

who is telling you that it is an underrated brand, it is an overrated brand, I say this for those who know what a super car is.. ok, have a good time..
That interior is AMAZING, I can't wait to see what they do to the 5 now.
Scenic was a sub-model Megane when first introduced. Look at what it has become, awesome! Not sure about these pads in the wheel caps, why not have these fixed?
will the right hand drive car get the full size screen or will it be like the megane where we get a small one??
Why not leave the wheel covers on as part of design
im impressed, i drive a 1999 renault scenic and love how far down the tailgate goes shame they didnt carry over the idea to this one
Or go to the other extreme, and have a split rear tailgate (so you can just open the top half if you want to reach in and get something without everythign else falling out... and then a fold-down lower lip for when you want lip-less access, etc.
I like Renault but there are some big questions not addressed here:
Same.. Freaking love it! :D
You must be a GAYLORD, since your choice of color is RED?
@@hanzohanzo1639 yes. A color makes me a gaylord.. great logic.
So.. what is the allowed colors?
Looks like a solid option. Wish the styling was a bit more brave. Do we have U.K. costs?
I probably won't move from my MK3 scenic into this. Agree with Jack about losing the round edge, and also the sliding seat, sliding centre console, picnic table, those family-friendly stuff. Pity that it chose to go down the semi-lux decor, risking someone (about to open a can of coke) shouting 'It's just a couch' after being told 'wait until we get to a service station'.
Just waiting to pick mine up in August can’t wait always had to scenic
Didn’t think I’d say so but I love it.
Thank God the UK market gets the large screen options, unlike the Mégane that is only offered with the small screen
Love those rear cup plus phone/tablet holders. Neat innovations.
What about the international standard of units?
Great review as always Jack. The only thing I’d love to see is an ev that’s designed for a family of 5. The Scenic was always that kind of car in the past, but the fancy middle armrest thing seems to have made way for a usable middle seat. That said, it’s a nice looking car with a great range and features.
Try a Skoda Enyaq. More range, bigger boot and better all round and cheaper than a model Y. It does around 4.5 miles per kwh.
@rogerphelps9939 Lovely car indeed. I'm currently driving a 2015 Nissan Leaf. Enyaq not quite within my price range yet! I'm more hopeful for more family evs coming down the track into the used market.
I also have a 2015 Leaf. It now just does short trips. The Enyaq is a huge step up. Not needed to use public charging yet. @@joelmarcus7958
I love this new world where we have wheel inserts that add range like how red stripes add horsepower.
How many ISOFIX go into this? Is there a Grande version with 7 seats? How many ISOFIX on that?
Is it pretty much a 4 seater ?
I was wondering had they gone all out and made it a 5/6 seater , but nah ,
I like the way it looks, though as an ex scenic mk2 owner I do wish they were a bit more adventurous. I guess there’s no need to as the packaging looks great. I’m a big fan of what they’re doing though the pricing is a bit too high. Therefore I’ll be hang around the second hand market in 5+ years waiting for the residuals to drop like a stone.
I bought a citroen c4 grand Picasso 1.6hdi. Affordable and very economical on diesel.
No more debt!
Love this!! Glad to see the Scenic back again. The interior is excellent and the ‘sunroof’ innovation is brilliant! ❤
I absolutely love it, and can't wait to get to drive it. Contemplating exchanging my 2020 Audi A4 coalmonster for this. Imagine that!
Very nice car! Just a bit worried about the glass roof and the effect of a summer sun on the inside temperature... even if it's opaque...
Grealish, this your sidehussle besides mancity?
Another decent EV and another great review. 🤟
Here in Czechia they say WLTP 594km
Looks GREAT it's now top of my short list for August
I am a bit puzzled by the wheels "trick".
Those wheel things i really dont get.
Ok, they are on to make the wheel alloy more streamlined, that's also why the handles have been made flush, so to reduce drag increasing the mileage. If you want to enjoy the whole alloy design, then you remove them. Simplez-tch.
I like the look, love the features and space, ticks a lot of boxes for me. Unfortunately, I live in the U.S. so ...
Used to be the EPA, now it is probably NTHSA, as well as Renault got their ass kicked in the US. The Renault 10 was a nice car.
Scenic used to be great car for family of 3. While the car looks great for rear passengers - it falls in line with all others. Suitable for 2 kids, 3 kids will suffer :(
❤ I love the big middle finger to mr bean 😂
Small back door and small windows spoil it, and I've had a few senics.... guess I'll have to wait for the EEspase
Never learnt how to spell it though?
Is the Ioniq 5 not bigger in the back ?
I guess I'll hang on to my ole' Grand Espace until the wheels come off. 😢
I like the new "row of medium sized physical buttons in one place to control everything else" trope automakers are doing now. It may not be artistically daring but its functional and simple enough to fit with any dash design. Once you learn the buttons after driving for a week its fast and easy to use without looking.
Three independent rear seats? Price?
Here goes nothing... Hey Jack, any word the Renault's V2G capability?
I took myself over to Gridserve in Essex for the Mégane launch and was very well received. My only issue was the black hole around what was going on with the Mégane coming with V2G, as per the pre release information. I mean, why drop (conversation) ~£10k on home battery storage when I can better use that money for the car, and get a many-fold bigger battery as well?
Thus, will this scenic come with a V2G or V2H capability? ...along with the all important OEM's bi-directional charger thrown in??
Any snippets of information around when we can expect to start seeing/getting this next evolution of new tech on thr cars would be wonderful 👍
Past that, love ya work.
I don't think the bottle neck is the utility company myself, more the "red tape" but this is of course pure speculation
If you are connected to the grid you've already got a standing charge.
Again, our man Bobby has spoken about this (years ago) so my "guess" is red tape vs technical limitations
But!
So the false grill is a couple of centometres way from the paintwork behind! So how the hell do you clean the flies off?
Pretty sure that was just a paint-effect... you can see that from some of the side-on shots, when the grill would otherwise be clearly separate from the vehicle?
Good to see there are just rear lights and no pointless rear light bars
Tell me when tve Grand Scenic with 7 seats come
Will RHD customers be stuck with the tiny central screen like the electric Megane ?
I think it's a very handsome and cleverly designed vehicle. Sadly, I suppose we'll never see them in the U.S.
Just perfect 👏👏 Hope the price is competitive - they will smash it 💪
very nice, then are we getting them in the uk?
I have an EQB right now. Will gladly change it for this Scenic !
I am looking at buying an electric car this year and i have selected two cars. Is it possible to get a comparison between the KIA EV6 GT Line vs the new Electric Scenic
interesting car, shame there is no frunk, looking at the bare chassis it looks like you coul have a couple of vertical cubby holes for cables or a thin set of bags etc. Any idea on the price point or when this will be available?
It's neat! I like the design and the practicality
