How To Sketch A Wild Orchid In Ink And Watercolour

- There's nothing like a meadow of wild flowers to feel that sense of summer all around you. The bee orchid is a rare and magical wild flower found in the Burren at this time of year that eluded me and my children, despite the promise of a cash reward, until a couple of years ago when we discovered them growing right in our back garden. I paid up!
You're not allowed to pick any orchids, but it's even more lovely to sketch them in ink and watercolour, because that way you have them forever. I have a nice easy approach to drawing and painting wild flowers: start at the top and work your way down, drawing each shape slowly and carefully as you go. If you make a mistake, correct it and carry on as if nothing has happened! Once you paint on top, you really won't notice mistakes, I assure you.

These grow in my garden every year, as well as 4 or 5 other types of orchids. When I'm cutting the grass, I go around the orchids even though there aren't any laws about them here in France..... at least I don't think there are any laws.

Orchids are amazing and come in all sorts of disguises….. the naked man ones being the most amusing. Flowers and vehicles are the things I find most difficult so I’m taking note on your process. Beautiful.

If you rub a little tooth paste on your pallet lid let dry a couple of minutes then buff off . your paint will not bead up when you mix....

Apparently you don’t see them again until Burma or something mental like that. We have a very mild climate even though it’s awful in winter 🥴
I didn’t know the May Bug was called a Chaffer. I found one dead one this year, I haven’t seen one for years but we use to have them bang into our windows every year. We had beautiful bee orchids and all different ones around our village. Love this painting ❤

Thank you for this lovely video (and the previous ones) I very much enjoy seeing you paint and am learning a lot from your approach. I somehow always succeed in filling in the highlights by accident or simply not thinking about it, making the sketch look flatter.

@VickersConnie the first was a squirrel mop, the second an R13. They’re written on the screen as well as narrated but perhaps not for very long!
