    I've worked on a variety of leather accessories over the past few years, but this has quickly become one of my favorite pieces. Depending on who you talk to this bag has a variety of names, from a hippie pouch, biker pouch, waist bag, or my favorite, "the medicine bag." Bags such as these are a popular accessory with bikers and serves as a stylish and useful place to store a wallet and cellphone (iphone...) for comfort and safe keeping while on the road.
    There is a considerable amount of work involved in building a bag like this, making it well worth it's weight in gold. Everything on the bag is completely done by hand without the aid of any machinery. The centerpiece is either made of vegetable tanned leather that was dampened and stamped with a texturing tool then dyed black and finished, or exotic alligator skin. The back closes securely with a leather strap that loops around the decorated concho at the centerpiece. For the sides of the bag I dampened and folded the leather so that the pouch can expand or shrink depending on it's load. I added the tassels for extra aesthetics.
    In this video learn how to craft a designer leather hip bag or also called, "The medicine bag." Instructions and patterns for this project can be downloaded at www.fischerworkshops.com
    This bag can also be purchased at Fischer Workshops. See our website for prices and availability. Enjoy!!! handmade

      I pre marked where I needed to roughen the leather. The video doesn't fully illustrate that... The area I roughened was also smaller than the diameter of the belt I was going to attach, so that it would be well hidden once stitched on.

    Nice work. Most times go the stitching and punching hole. Your work is professional. I do pretty good, but do lack of template can't do much. I saw Japanese leather craftsmen are great and they have better quality accorories and can sell stuffs at a price that here, specially in Canada nobody will buy. Most canadians are client of chinese knock off stuffs. I do fine wood working and 99% my customers are in the USA. We learn everyday sometimes from somebody and youtube gave us opportunity to learn. 30 years ago people went to school to learn this type of craft works. Thanks for your nice video.

    Hi I have just completed my first build of the medicine bag. I have been doing leatherwork for about a year and this was the most challenging project I have attempted to date. Everyone who has seen it so far has commented on how good the design is, so well done for that. The only problem I had was in shaping the gusset. It has meant I have ended up with the back pocket going on at a slight angle when the bag I'd open although it has not affected the appearance when closed. I have decided to make a jig to wet form the gusset on my next build and I will let you know how I get on with that. Thanks for a very easy to follow video and an excellent pattern. Kind Regards Mike

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  8 лет назад

      A folding jig might work, I've never tried. Since the gusset is so long I'd be curious how that works out. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you enjoyed the design!

    • @popscratchie3985
      @popscratchie3985 2 года назад

      I had exactly the same problem, the gusset is an absolute nightmare I could not manage to get it to lay flat without huge creases. I think if I attempt this bag again I will try with a softer more stretchy leather like chrome tanned on the gusset.

      Quick question. The main body when resized on adobe illustrator is smaller than the "Front of Pocket" and "Rear Cover to Front" by 3mm to 1 side and 3mm to the lenght. Is there a reason for it, or must I rather use the main body as my template.
      PS: I have resized all templates according to the measurements given.

    Great quality! It's a absolutely gorgeous piece. One question: At 16:35 I noticed that you chose to put your snap eyelets between the layers you glued. I know that's for visual reasons (even though you'd never see it when worn). Would you be worried that it won't be serviceable when the stud wears out? I replace them on holster thumb breaks all the time that are only a few years old because the socket just erodes them away from repeated use and they get loose and sloppy.

Still I'm curious as to why some ocassions he uses the chisel for punching some stitch holes and some other ocassions he uses the pliers. Or if there's something to the order inwich he applies the shinny coat to certain pieceses intead of doing it all at the same time.

    HI Greeting From Berlin Germany I think that looking at your work most of the people might believe that is something EaSy to do but instead is a difficult and precise Work and in your case is a piece of ART Too.
    Thank you for Sharing your knowledge ...( ;
    I have question it might be a stupid one..: Why at min.7:26 you put the CutOut centerPiece Beyond the Decorative CenterPiece if I glue and sew just the decorative centerPiece on the body withOut the cutOut centerPiece wouldn't be enough?
    ps what are the sizes from the medicine bag pattern?
    ThanK U again Fischer

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  8 лет назад

      I apply the cutout behind the back to push the decorative centerpiece
      slightly out. It's not necessary, but it adds more dimension and beauty
      to the final outcome. Although I guess it depends on what type of
      leather you end up making the bag with. If the leather for the
      centerpiece is too hard it may not matter. The bags dimensions can be
      viewed at the following link. Just click on the image with dimensions
      and it will enlarge for viewing. Here's the link:

    Curious, was it more of a design choice for function/form to go with a leather tie down rather than a concho-snap for a closure? I've seen a few of these bags before and they were all snap closures or toggles. This is definitely a neat way to go about it though. Nicely done.

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  7 лет назад +1

      DraccoKnightblade Design and function. I think the leather strap is more aesthetically nicer, secure, and easy to open and close. A button would also require some force to close putting pressure on the contents of the bag.

    Question? At 6:16 you say that you are gluing the gusset to the other piece with rubber cement, but then later you are staining and finishing the gusset? Uhhh I don't understand.

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  7 лет назад

      The gusset is 1st glued to the pocket front while it is wet so it will form to the shape of the pocket. After the leather has dried and molded, it can be stained. You could remove it from the pocket front and stain it and then glue it back on again, or you could leave it on the pocket front and stain it as well. (Let me know if this doesn't answer your question) Thanks!

    • @masterhelijettester

      Fischer Workshops I have not been able to unglue leather without it being damaged.

    • @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan
      @FischerWorkshopsTaiwan  7 лет назад

      A lot depends on the strength of the contact cement and the amount applied. I always apply a very small amount and that's enough to do the job. But if you are already doing this then you might need to buy a weaker contact cement. I use UHU contact cement glue sticks for leather jobs that will need to be glued and unglued 1 or more times. I hope this helps!

    nice product!!! at 6:15 when you mold and use rubber cement.. does that hold well when the leather is wet? i could never get it to stay in place.. any tips.. (i use weldwood btw)

      Try only dampening the area you need to bend. You can also apply the cement to the leather before wetting it to see if it will hold better. This works well with the product I'm using now...

      so you dampen, then wet.. then mold.... .. when i wet then apply glue, it stays but not enough to hold in place.. it moves a little defeating the purpose of gluing

      I heard him loud and clear. Try investing in proper speakers. but maybe he could have lowered the music a tad. I saw someone else complain.

      The sound of the video is fine. What you are describing happens to me sometimes when i watch videos on my phone using headphones. What I found is that if you pull the headphone jack out halfway so it only contact first part of the jack it sounds fine. It's likely that your device it not processing the sound channels correctly sometimes just like my phone.
