Very honest podcast! I think we all need a kind, well-meaning dose of reality-especially when it comes to a dream of homesteading. You nailed it! Thanks for the wise advice!

Thank you for sharing this side of homesteading. The realization that homesteading is a way of life which may replace some of what we do, it may reduce expenses in some areas, but doesn't replace modern life is important. I feel like this is the difference between homesteading and farming. A homestead will provide for the family, a farm will provide for the community and be profitable for the family.

Thabk you for all of the info. I'm planning in homesteading once we retire, but that's just for hubby and me. Until then i get to practice with my little suburbian backyard garden. We will reture in about 10 years. Bought the homestead property earlier this year. Now we have about 5 years to start establishing trees and bushes and plan out our future food forest. A little bit more each year. Everything paid off by the time we retire. Hopefully :)

Awesome advice! My goal is to make my hobby self-sustaining after I retire. I love vegetable and flower gardening, but it can be expensive. My goal is to learn how to do it where there is not a constant input of outside resources and cash. I think I will get there. The biggest reward is that my grand daughters love to harvest from my garden. Not so hip on eating out of the garden yet, but I think they will get there.

I Can’t remember who said this:
On a “HOMESTEAD,” Food is Raised to Feed the Family, and the Extra Food is Sold.
On a FARMSTEAD Food is Raised to Sell, and the Extra Food, not Sold, is Used to Feed the Family.

Thank you for sharing this! This episode help clear a few things up for me. I’m wanting to start working toward adding to my husbands income and have a youtube channel that I’m just getting started. I know eventually it will bring in some income, but I know it won’t be enough and it takes awhile to build a following. I would be very interested in a more in-depth business video/podcast in light of a stay at home mom of 3, homeschooling, homesteading, and herbalist (in training).

I like the new mic setup. Not only does it not mess up your fancy hair, the headset made you look like you were ready to slam some Mtn Dew & play Fortnite with the kids.

Melissa, based on your video, the takeaway for me is homesteading is a wash. You can't pay your mortgage from homesteading. Your operation needs to be scaled such that you wouldn't be called a homesteader. The regulatory ceilings that prevent people from growing their farming or agricultural operations to a profitable point is repressive. This is why many American farmers have dissolved.
Honestly, you're not a homesteader. You're a social media influencer, trainer and teacher. This is most likely your primary source of funds and would define your primary occupation. Watch the movie "The Founder" where Ray Croc explains to the McDonalds owners that they were not in the restaurant business. They were in the Real Estate business. That's you, you just don't know it yet.
A person that lives in an apartment could do exactly what you do and film other "homesteaders" as their content, make training videos, write books about it, etc.

Love the videos, but your sound has like an echo or like you're talking from far away even though you're talking directly into the microphone, which doesn't come out as clear when you compare it to your older videos.
