  • This is my homemade plywood canoe.
This a 14ft Prospector designed by Selway Fisher and uses the stitch and glue method.
I would like to say a big thank you to the following people:
#Simon, a bloke in the woods - For the recommendation of West system epoxy.
#eamon green - For the recommendations of the PDF plywood canoe building book.
#Andrew Simpson - For tips on fitting the gunnels.
#Andy Titcomb - For sharing his experience when building his Prospector.
#Selway Fisher Design - For designing plans for a wide range of canoes and for providing me with the advice and guidance I needed to help me succeed in this build.
#My wife for encouraging me to take on this project.

Looks great. Tossing up between Prospector and Raven? 5 panels versus 3 side panels.

This on is the prospector, having the 5 panels will give you more tumble Holm, which perfect for the rivers. Thank you for watching and good luck with your build 😊

When canvasing (or re-canvasing) a wood canoe, the canvas must be one piece, and it is stretched over the canoe in one piece. This practice seems to have been carried over to the use of fiberglass cloth that is satuated with either epoxy or polyester. However, when covering a canoe hull with fiberglass cloth and resin, it is not necessary or even advisable to cover the whole canoe with one integral piece of cloth. It is easier, and perhaps even better, to section the work off by overlapping pieces of cloth.
A common mistake when using fiberglass cloth and resign is to attempt to cover up the weave of the cloth on the first application of resin. What happens is that the cloth floats to the surface of the resin, and one keeps on adding more resin in a futile attempt to cover the weave. The first coat of resin on the cloth should be no more than what is needed to just barely saturate the cloth. Once that resin has set, another coat is added to cover the weave.
Addendum: I don't install decks on my canoes. They serve no purpose except to create a dead air space which promotes rot.

Thank you for the information, I will definitely keep this in mind if I ever build another canoe in the future. Thanks for watching 😊

To add to this before glassing with resin, I would first use infusion resin thinned with styrene to saturate the wood (catalyze high for fast cure) , then in a one piece cloth in 4oz. rolled up from both ends to meet in the middle. Once resin cured light sand (clean) then pre wet out half the canoe with vinyl ester just enough to hold material as you roll it out and smooth it down as you go by hand. Then wet out with a brush even real easy also roller or squeegee what ever you prefer to work with or what ever wet out process you like then repeat for other half( with marine grade resin not generial purpose ). then sand and repeat again . I found this material is easier to hide with resin and finish up with a clear polyurethane

Thank you, I am glad that you like the video, please subscribe to my channel :) The plywood I used was 5mm exterior ply. I used 4 sheets in total and Ash wood for the rest of the project. It was a huge learning curve for me.

Fantastic build video. Great job. I have just started building this canoe. What weight cloth did you use and where did you buy it from? Cheers.

I hope your build goes well, as for the cloth weight I used, off the top of my head I believe it was 200g plain fiberglass. Good luck with your build.

    what is that white material?

    • @sammyslavvu1981
      @sammyslavvu1981  Год назад

It's a fiberglass cloth covered in an epoxy resin. It gives the plywood a plastic protection, strength and resistance to water.

Yeah, Im still new to making videos. It's only because I was taking progressive photos I thought it would be a nice way to show the stages of the build. If I ever build another, I will do more of a build along next time.
