  • 🍺 This cold process soap is made with beer instead of water. It's scented with Oatmeal Stout Fragrance Oil and features a dramatic charcoal swirl. We recommend using beer from a local brewery to support your community!
    Working with alternative liquids takes a little extra prep work. In this case, that means boiling the beer to remove the alcohol and letting it sit uncovered for 1-2 days to get rid of carbonation. You can also freeze the beer to prevent further discoloration. Because of the extra prep work, we recommend this recipe for more advanced soap makers.
    🍺 You can find the Charcoal Beer Soap Project here: bberry.studio/B...
    The natural sugar in beer boosts lather in cold process soap, and it's also great from a marketing perspective. This soap is colored with activated charcoal and titanium dioxide to create a dramatic contrasting swirl. Because Oatmeal Stout Fragrance Oil does discolor, it's added to the charcoal portion only. Over time, the discoloration will migrate slightly into the lighter portion - but will still look great! The lather does have a slight color, due to the charcoal and fragrance.
    The beer needs to be boiled to remove alcohol and carbonation, otherwise it can react badly with the lye and cause a bubbly volcano effect. We used an IPA with a medium color. If you prefer a different type, keep in mind a darker beer will affect the final color of your batch. We recommend prepping slightly more beer than you need for your recipe to account for the amount that will evaporate as it's boiled. In this recipe, we weighed out 24 ounces of beer when we needed 11.3 ounces.
    Ingredients:
    23.4 oz. Olive Oil (65%)
    1.8 oz. Cocoa Butter (5%)
    9 oz. Coconut Oil (25%)
    1.8 oz. Coffee Butter (5%)
    5 oz. Sodium Hydroxide Lye
    11.3 oz. Beer (boiled and cooled)
    2 tsp. Sodium Lactate
    1.5 oz. Oatmeal Stout Fragrance Oil
    Titanium Dioxide
    Activated Charcoal
    9 Bar Birchwood Mold
    Silicone Liner for 9 Bar Mold

    Something I see a lot in soaping groups is people worrying because unscented beer soap smells awful. Give it time. I made a beer bastille soap with no fragrance, and it took about 3 days for the smell to go away.

    As a chemistry major the glass container for the lye solution, bothers me - otherwise I enjoy Anne-Marie's videos.

      @@witchypath917 HDPE plastic - over time lye etches glass, after a while the glass can shatter. When it happens it's unpredictable and unsafe - you can have shatters of glass mixed in with a lye solution. It has happened to me.

      @@lindahalpern5722 I’m pretty that she mentioned that the containers she uses for the lye are made of plastic in another video, she doesn’t say it in every video but she always uses either plastic or heat-safe glass containers for lye

      I agree. Any soap maker knows that. But she'll figure it out when her glass of lye breaks and goes everywhere. Teach proper safety if you're going to do a class

    Why do you use glass containers when making CP soaps. Tha tr s a huge no no. The lye solution will break down the chemistry in the glass and pit it. Your only sopossed to use stainless steel or plastic. Never understood why brambleberry soap videos use glass.

    Have you ever made the soap without a fragrance oil? What is the scent like?

    • @bramble-berry
      @bramble-berry  3 года назад +1

      Soaps without fragrance tend to take on the more neutral scents of what they're made of. For example, oils like hemp seed oil will give a more nutty smell and beeswax will give a slight honey scent.

    • @tleaftreasures1353
      @tleaftreasures1353 3 года назад +2

      Melt and pour soaps do come in beer bases, depending on where you live. OR just buy your regular base and add a beer scent. The scents are non alcoholic so no need to worry, just use as you would any other fragrance oil.
      Adding actual beer to a melt and pour base, no.

    That's not true that you have to cook the alcohol off first. I don't cook it off and neither does Ariane Arsenault We add the lye to the oils first then the alcohol and have never had a problem.
