When I was in college, dating my husband, another guy liked me at the time. He bought me a dozen roses and when Jeff found out, this song was playing on the radio and he asked me that question: if he had 2 dozen roses would it change my mind. I told him only one! He was my one and only forever love.
Shenandoah was extremely popular here in Texas during the late 80s/early 90s and you can see that with the audience reaction here. I'm very lucky to have lived in this great state during their heyday.
I can actually tell you i remember the late 90s and early 2000s. This song actually echoed quite well everywhere i gone. Though only being born in 95, its scary how much i remember. This is why i fell in love with texas and dont want to leave as where i was born in washington nothing like this was present. If anything, i still recall the drastic changes and languages when being OTR with my father the couple of years he did it Great times i truly miss.
this guitar tone is so interesting because it simultaneously reminds me of 90's country and The Smiths, to the point where I could see Morrisey singing this and it still making sense
Musically speaking, we really peaked as a species in the late 80's/early 90's. Country was right up there with rock and pop firing off absolute heaters.
I'm not even a country fan and I would have to say that this is way better than some pop-country singer talking about back roads, jacked up trucks, beer, and girls. This song has meaning while you can expect the same, overused subjects from pop-country
I agree. I listen to more jazz, electronic, and 80s pop. Some classic metal, too. If more country music sounded like this, I would be a big country fan!
I wish I could Give My Mother 2 dozen Roses, I miss you so much after 5 years still hurts so much, I will love you so much till my last breath. Rest in peace you deserve it she had a hard life.
I’m not joking when I say I’ve watched this live performance by Shenandoah of their 1989 classic ‘Two Dozen Roses’ about 50 times in the past few days. There’s so much going on. I’ve limited my comments to the section after the guitar solo for brevity. ‘If I could cry a little harder’ sings lead vocalist Marty Roban. You know what? I almost believe him. There’s sincere pain in that lilting voice of his; a yearning to be set free from his loneliness. The sparseness of the drums during his delivery of this line just emphasises this feeling of isolation. Mike McGuire on the sticks showing great restraint as he lets Marty’s delivery speak for itself; it’s Marty singing directly to his ex-lover. If I cried a little harder would you take me back? Marty continues to address hypothetical questions to his ex lover; ‘... and got a little less sleep at night, if I had two dozen roses would it change your mind?’ Marty backs away from the mic after pondering this question for the first time (3:06). He looks away, is he contemplating if the previously mentioned changes to his actions could result in his ex taking him back live on stage as his band performs? I think he is. The sweat on his brow is evident as he returns to the mic to repeat his question (3:10). I believe this sweat is a result of his deep reflection on the words he just sang; maybe Marty became overcome with nervous emotion as he sang from the heart. The crowd might as well have not been there. In Marty’s eyes he was singing directly to his former lover and maybe for the first time considered the possibility of a reunion actually happening, and not just some corny line for a song. Marty continues to repeat his question and even lets out a guttural moan (3:31). As the outro continues, Jim Seales on lead guitar cracks a brief smile (3:40). It’s as if he knows something is about to happen, and he’d be right. The band abruptly stop playing. For a second you could be convinced that the song is over. But no. Marty is not done with his reflection, and poses the question once again ‘baby would it change your mind?’ The band rejoins him and continues to play the outro as Marty lets out more guttural moans and pines for some closure on whether his ex lover will change her mind. We are then blessed with a different angle of the stage (4:01) for the band’s latest display of trickery. Bassist Ralph Ezell is our focus. His neck moves in time with the drums, his movements not being dissimilar to a pigeon. Once again the band abruptly stops. Surely after the previous false ending, this should signal the culmination of the song? But once again we are tricked as Marty comes in once more to ask his question. Ralph is loving this; watch his head as the band resumes at 4:08; he can’t contain his glee and looks out to the crowd as if to say ‘gotcha’. This is a great song and a timeless performance. The tape hiss and lo-fi quality of the recording gives it much greater warmth and vintage feeling than the studio recorded track. It’s a classic track and I’m just happy I can share that in 2023.
I have always loved their music. Marty invited me back to church again back some time ago and come to find out he attends the same church that my mother attends.. ( FBCCH ) I hope he is still doing well it's been years since I have seen him.. Great guy.. Reborn Christian.... Stay safe my friend...If I never see you again ... That small few second invitation lingers with me to this very day.. Thank you Marty..
I had the pleasure of meeting him last year. He is a personal friend of some of my cousins in Cullman, AL. It was a sad occasion though, my cousin's wife's funeral. But he was a super nice person, sang beautifully and said a very humble prayer.
Do you still have it? This video has so bad sound quality, even the uploader and owner of the channel acknowledges this down in the comments. He said he would upload it if he's sent a better quality one. Man I'd be so happy if you got a better video. So much history is lost so easily.
Good Morning! They came to the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque NM last September 2024. They were very popular. Their concert was sold out. They were still very excellent. They should do some more concerts for us. I don't know what is stopping them. But they need to hit the concert road again. Marlene Toledo Grayson
Blessed to live in a region of my country where able to listen to country music played by an US air base radio that was connected to Nashville and it's shows and speakers like Bob Kingley that I still dearly remember. Angela, Umbria Italy :)
My black and Cherokee country life. My Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt addition, my ford F150 n muddin all day. I cry every time I hear this song. Memorie U can;t take bak.
Man I miss these days as a kid laying in my bedroom floor trying to record these songs off the radio or finally able to buy a cassette tape of these old classic 80s and 90s country singers. Those were the days, and we never even knew it😢.
John Robertson it’s not the same same but, check out the red dirt/Texas country scene. It’s more traditional....there’s a good mix of outlaw and cowboy country.
Ghost In This House was a hit when I started listening to country without being forced by my dad’s radio in his truck- what I wouldn’t give to go back and ride with him every day 🥰
My first recording experience ever was in Ralph Ezell's basement in Jackson Ms on his 4 track reel to reel in 1974...with Gary Bitzer, Jeb Stuart, and i thiink Jim Medlin...

How did I get here? I don’t even like country music, but I feel some kind of nostalgia hearing this. I must have listened to it at one time. Great song.
WE need this kind of country back on the radio.
Daniel Adams oo yeah
Daniel Adams yea we do but I don't think it's gonna happen
No we dont! We need Walon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard
@@rexmenace8362 This is clearly inspired by the greats who came before them.
I agree! And it certainly is better than modern music.
This band was so underrated. A great lead singer with the vocals and a band that made those instruments talk.
Exactly. Nailed it !!
absolutely,along with travis tritt..
wasnt underrated back in the day! at least where im from
Are y'all talking about Marty Raybon? He's the lead singer for Shenandoah, and he sings good, plus he plays the electric acoustic guitar.
Amazing singer, although he always looks a little disconnected and Out There when he is performing.
This song would go on to become one of the greatest country music songs of all time....
I still listen to them!
This one and I'm carrying your love with me and the cotton wood tree song as well. Paint me a Birmingham is a top favorite as well.
@@Tommyxp420stars over Texas by Tracy Lawrence is up there
From the mid 80's to the mid 00's was the golden age of country music in my humble opinion.
Agreed!
This is a fact
Not to many people realize they got a BADASS guitar player.
Had..he retired some years back.
@@mikegrassman4773sad he was my favorite 🤩 😢

Jim Seales is a great player.
Most 90s country did. Garth's lead guitarist was who REALLY drove his storytelling home and almost every song they did was a total banger!
When I was in college, dating my husband, another guy liked me at the time. He bought me a dozen roses and when Jeff found out, this song was playing on the radio and he asked me that question: if he had 2 dozen roses would it change my mind. I told him only one! So beautiful. That's so beautiful

You’re also lucky for getting to live through Austin City Limits in its heyday. You had Reba, Chet Adkins, Eric Johnson, all of them
90’s country just hit different man ❤️👏🔥🔥
1989 but yeah I agree
so
still a certified country gold banger in 2024 ❤
I didn't know Jeff Foxworthy played for Shenandoah, learn something new every day...
Lol
I thought the same thing 😂
Me too
this guitar tone is so interesting because it simultaneously reminds me of 90's country and The Smiths, to the point where I could see Morrisey singing this and it still making sense
Aye this slaps. Mobbin around the Bay with this 💯 Usssssss
I think I’m on the late train of having this song on repeat
This late 80s early 90s country is the best there ever has been. Can't find nothing to compare it with nowadays. Maybe we're just getting old.
Musically speaking, we really peaked as a species in the late 80's/early 90's. Country was right up there with rock and pop firing off absolute heaters.
This song made in Heaven. And I am not even christian. I am asian and I love this song. This gives me piece and happiness.

Ditto. I listen to more Synthwave , Metal & Hip hop. This is actually really good
I agree. I listen to more jazz, electronic, and 80s pop. Some classic metal, too. If more country music sounded like this, I would be a big country fan!
It's always, "I'm sorry", its never - "Lord I must have been a fool back then, to lose something' that you can't have again!!" ♥️
This music is from a time when country was country. None of that country rap crap or hickhop as I call it. This was pure gold
todays country sucks.
Yes this true Country
Agreed
Amen

Michael Lamon you made me cry. God bless you. My prayers are with you and your family.
Ditto me
I feel you. I just lost my mother back in March. Mother's Day is going to be really rough for me!
But
this is one of the greatest country songs of all time, i wonder if they knew at first how big it would be
They do a great job with this live version. Shenandoah very underrated in my opinion. My favorite Shenandoah song along with Janie Baker Love Slave!!!
Any other good song suggestions for a new country music fan?

I remember watching Shenandoah in concert at Texas stadium in Dallas in the early 90's and Jim played his ass off and the entire band sounded great!
The 32 people who disliked need a lil more sleep at night.
Going to see these guys in Dec 2022 with Billy Dean and Wade Hayes for the Country Comeback tour in Laughlin, NV. Looking forward to it.

I know it oughta be perfectly clear
But I can't help but wonder what it might be like

Would it change your mind
If I could cry a little harder
And get a little less sleep at night
If I had two dozen roses
Would it change your mind
Oh I musta been a fool back then
To lose somethin' that you can't have again
I've done all that I know to do
And second guess my every move
But I can't help but wonder how it might have been
If I had two dozen roses
And an older bottle of wine
If I really coulda hung the moon
Would it change your mind
If I could cry a little harder
And get a little less sleep at night
If I had two dozen roses
Would it change your mind
If I could cry a little harder
And get a little less sleep at night
If I had two dozen roses would it change your mind
Baby, would you change your mind
