I love the lyrics of this song...metaphors galore...'steals like a thief'...'carelessly cut you & laugh while you're bleeding'...taken out of the context of the song they would be bad...but I feel like this song is a tribute to women & how multi-faceted & complex we can be 😊😇

@@lipby He did not deserve it because there was no misogyny, but I appreciate that if not knowing the backstory, it can be inadvertently interpreted that way.
Billy when he was younger had been ripped off for money by those in the music business and has often had problems with managers both before and after this song, so he made his then wife at the time Elizabeth his manager because he felt that he could trust her more.
This was in the 70s when women tended more to be housewives only, or if they did have jobs they were rarely the kind of positions of power type jobs. So when she would represent Billy in any negotiations, she was often labelled as difficult and hard-nosed but in this song he is saying that she or women in general might be (insert any of the negative traits of your choice from the song lyrics) but she's still always a woman to me.

@@lipby Strange then that you say he "deserved the grief he got for the misogyny of this song" if you know it when if it was quite the opposite, and a retort to those saying 'misogynistic' things about his then wife and presumably the woman he was in love with at the time.
If anything, he was defending her.

America has Billy Joel, England has Elton John.
    There’s one major difference.
Both are great piano players, both are great singers.
Difference is Billy wrote all his songs, Elton John has a partner who wrote all the lyrics to his hits, Bernie Taupin.

    • @Barefoot433
      @Barefoot433 2 месяца назад

You are right, I totally agree. I will say though, that England certainly has its share of musical artistry and lyrical mastery. It's in their blood and their history, back to the Renaissance. America's best influence, I'd say. But some Americans, like Billy Joel, are obviously on that top tier level with them. Elton John's songs never did much for me; Billy Joel's have.

Billy Joel is a great singer songwriter from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. A lot of his songs tell stories such as "Piano Man". The whole "Stranger" album is great & one of my favorites. It has this song "She's Always A Woman" on it. Other songs are "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" etc.

Not trying to be a dick here but this song was inspired by Billy's first wife and manager Elizabeth Weber who he married in 1973 and divorced in 1982. And this song is from 1977.
He did not meet Christie until after his divorce and they married in 1985. There are plenty of other songs Billy wrote that were inspired by Christie though, including most of the An Innocent Man album in 1983.

This always struck me as a back handed compliment to women. They're always in control. Somewhere there is a guy who will defend the woman who cuts him and laughs. Probably most of us guys have been there one time or another. Anything to keep her happy. Hall and Oates were probably talking about the same chick Billy was.

This is about a very specific woman, his first wife. And no, she doesn't sound like a nice person, although there's respect for her in the lyrics as well. His songs about Christie Brinkley have a very different tone, and I think they're still friends.

GREETINGS EARTH COUPLE: One of the biggest indicators of cultural malaise is the denigration of women in some schools of contemporary music. Is there anymore female-affirming music than the Righteousness Brothers, for example. I know the feeling Tasha of ending a song not having been assaulted by grunts, cursing and the complete assault on women. I feel bad for young people musically. You are rare among you peers now for your exposure to American popular music. channels such as yours help couples by giving them many positive mutual experiences. I know it's strengthened your marriage, and I admire you for this.

This song is being sung to another guy who is always complaining about the woman's faults, so Billy is telling him that despite all of the things that that guy is upset about, that she is ALWAYS a woman with him, so it must be his own shortcomings that cause him to find fault with her.

I always loved this song's clamness, but the lyrics reveal an abusive malignant narcissist who is toxic at best! He just lays out her symptoms like he's reading from a psychologist's diagnostic manual, there's no way around it, but that message is hidden by the music. Billy Joel is therefore a genius.

My take on this has always been that he's being very sarcastic - he loves the woman, but she is very nasty and insulting. I don't think it's in praise of women (or at least this woman) at all. So the beautiful music doesn't match the cynical lyrics. But maybe that's just me.
