  • I've been participating in Artfight for three years, one thing I've noticed is the increasing hostility towards new participants and artists. I don't like that at all, especially for a community like this, so I discuss why I think that's stupid.

Of course this is my first year like I said so I don't have a million attacks coming in or anything, but I'm SO grateful for everything I do get, I always gasp and smile when I get the notifs lmao

I genuinely didn’t realize that artists on artfight could be this petty?? The fact that some artists even DELETE art that they don’t think is high quality enough is beyond me, that’s so insanely disrespectful and if someone did that to me as a younger artist it would be absolutely crushing; in my first year of artfight getting attacks made my day and people need to realize that younger artists have feelings too and are just trying to grow and enjoy themselves like everyone else

I remember my first year on artfight and half my attacks didn’t get anything back 😭🙏🏼 no comments not even an emoji no revenge
    It really hurt man
Last year I had someone attack me and ask me to remove their art from toyhouse and then deleted it off of artfight because I didn’t revenge it.
I always attack at least 3 beginner artists every year now since I remember how it felt my first year and I want to make sure they’re appreciated. Especially considering I am a somewhat mid sized creator on the platform. (Almost 200 followers, 104 attacks, about 90 defenses)

Oh wow that was extremely rude of them! The point of the event is to have fun and appreciate the art you get from others and attack back if you can! Recieving and attacking begginer artists is soo nice! Seeing them join and having fun with the event is just awesome! It's sad you had such experiences with it in the past though

I turned 30 this year and have always been intimidated by art fight even though I’ve been doing art commissions for many years now. thank you for this video it really helped simplify things for me again, I agree that it feels like the appreciation for art on social media nowadays is more competitive than ever this year, hopefully there are lots of budding artists who feel welcome and have fun, and maaaaybe I’ll work up my courage next year >.

As an artfight veteran (have been participating for 11 years), I think people should stop looking at it like ''how good is the artist i'm attacking'' and rather look for ''what oc looks like fun to draw?''
From my experience, usually people will have it displayed on their profile if they're doing revenges or if they're only attacking random characters they think look neat.
Artfight becomes a lot more fun when you're, you know, drawing to have fun and with characters you think look fun. If you only draw for revenges that's a surefire recipe of getting burnt out really quickly.
ALSO!! IT IS OKAY TO ONLY DRAW ONE ATTACK PER SEASON!! And Mass attacks are a fun way to practice group shots and scenes!! Don't let social media discourage you from having fun during artfight season i beg you!!

    • @GamblingJester
      @GamblingJester 2 месяца назад +1

Tbh this is my first year and I ended up prioritizing on revenging anyone who attacks me for 2 reasons:1) I got like, 40 attacks(which I assume is not the usual "af newbie" experience) 2)I really just want to show that I'm grateful for ppl who took the time and chose to draw my ocs out of all the ocs on the website and it just brings me joy that these people feel appreciated regardless of skills,

one complaint that I do have, is that NSFW artists that are doing SFW work for the event get harrassed because they draw fetish art normally... I had to deal with a user, who was a minor, who tried calling me out as a pedo and harrassing me on my socials, that are all 18+, yesterday... all because i draw bigger characters... im sure that Art fight has not been like that in the past... but as a first timer to this event, it was a massive disappointment that actually made me fear for my safety... so it is safe for me to say it is not a good look on the event to pretty much allow that to happen... even reported the user and I'm still waiting to see if they did anything (news flash... they didnt...) I'm gonna consider Artfight as extremely dangerous if this type of shit continues next year and i will not associate with the event if i even get a hint of it happening to me again

the harsh truth of artfight is like. do NOT join if you're only doing it to get art from people. it's supposed to be a fun positive thing where you draw art for people and you get art back as a bonus.
luckily ive never run into anything, but ive seen a couple character profiles where they basically acted like they were getting free commissions. they wrote out exactly how to draw their character (background and everything) and its just insane to me how people could do that-

  • @ghastlyghost0w0
    @ghastlyghost0w0 3 месяца назад +17

I've never taken part in artfight personally because of the fact I just don't have the time to spare. But to think that people genuinely bash on younger artists for drawing their characters is insane to me. Shouldn't you just be happy your OCs are getting what basically equivalents to free fanart? And all you have to do is attack back? It's a fair exchange, and I don't get the mentality of these people. I may not take part myself, but from what I've seen over the years, this is supposed to be a fun experience, not a time to hate on people for underdeveloped skills and/or being put in mass attacks.
(Also, i'd just like to comment that your art style is absolutely scrumptious, my guy. I love the detail you put into it)

As someone who has a lot of people avoid me due to other GROWN ADULTS starting drama just because said people are good artists has sucked. It stinks someone’s talent allows them to be bad people online and in these games.
On a more related note, everyone deserves to play even if they’re a beginner!! Like the fact you get any art is nice. You shouldn’t join just to get art - especially people who do this to up the price of their ocs - you should join because you want to draw.

I'm a moderate artist. I'm experienced but I'm still tweaking and discovering my style. I attacked a beginner artist and they revenged me with the cutest attack of one of my easier to draw characters. In fact nearly every attack i have received has been of that Character because he's just so simple.
While it would be nice to receive attacks of some of my other Characters, i can understand why people might prefer to draw that character. I am pretty new to art fight, and i enjoy it a lot. And i love seeing peoples reactions to my attacks. That's what makes it worth it to me, is getting to see people enjoying my work. It's super validating and motivates me to continue making art

Like bruh, just say you expected me to bend over backwards and remake the piece or smth, idk. Not to mention mine was a revenge, and they didn't even attempt to draw my character accurately either 😬 Huuuge reason I'm no longer doing guaranteed revenge. It sucks, but some people will rush or only make a piece bc they want a revenge, and you can really tell they dgaf about the design or permissions. It's really sad how beginner artists are always slandered for their art styles. We all start somewhere and the only way we'll ever get better is if we practice, and art fight is the perfect place for that. To experiment, branch out of our comfort zones and improve on our art further. To me, there's something special about receiving art from beginners and seeing beginners on af. I *love* receiving art from beginners, I was attacked by one earlier this season and it made me really happy. It has its own value to it which makes me really appreciate it. I love attacking beginners just as much as experienced artists. Art fight is *the* biggest opportunity for beginners to shine. Just like bigger and more experienced artists, beginners should get that spotlight too and receive just as much support for them to thrive. Beginners are the future of the art community and if people keep hating on them for their art, we could lose artists who have great potential.

The only thing I could think at that moment was: a person on this planet, among thousands of characters, has decided to pay attention to mine, and not only that, he/she has spent time drawing it without even knowing if i am going to appreciate it or compensate him (don't worry, I left him a nice comment and I drew a drawing of a Pokémon oc that he had that I liked), he /she only did it because she/he felt like it!!!

If I were to join I’d probably only attack smaller artists with a less honed art style because no matter how good the art is I get back the biggest reward will always, ALWAYS be to make someone happy. Again, never joined, but that’s what AF should be about

  • @lyssanah

the only issue ive seen is an overall slower and slower rates of attack/revenge. the af population has about tripled in 2 years. it just is a larger demand and beginner artists are jumping to the conclusion that its their art to blame.
the only issue ive personally seen is a negligence to read perms. i put in my perms “dont change the race/species/biological makeup of my oc” and they got species bent anyways :’) and ive heard a lot more complaints of perm breaks elsewhere too.
and with that overpopulation now, theres constantly questions repeated in the discord and help is severely limited and mods are rarely available. new fighters are struggling to be sure of the rules and get snarky quips from chat for not reading the question being asked 5 minutes ago when 300+ messages have been sent by then. this year is shockingly not beginner art fighter friendly, it seems. a shame its broken down like this, really

The funnest part for me is challenging myself, experimenting- last year my goal was to draw as many attacks as possible (but not cheaply, just for fun), and this year it was to draw a 100 character mass attack. It makes me so disappointed as I always get a lot of beginner artists attacking me, and its probably the best part to see how they grow over the years, but I just wish these new artists will realize we (or at least I) don't care about the quality, its about the the honestly and integrity that went into the drawing. I found this one artist who had used bases for every attack they made. Whether it was a png, or an online color page. I tried to tell them nicely that it was against the rules as best as I could. Next thing I know the off-topic channel in the Server was going crazy over the fact that "someone tried to make them quit artfight" :\

I've not noticed any of the drama but I pretty much avoid social media for the most part. Ive done Art fight for years, it's really fun, I am severely ill with chronic illness and when I started I was worried I wouldn't be able to participate or return art, however I just go at my own pace and its been a great way to interact with other artists that I usually don't get to do.
For anyone saying they are too nervous to try it, just give it a go, it's not a contract and if you can't keep up that's ok and you might be surprised with what you can do. I have seen my ability improve each year and because I am better/faster at art now, I am able to attack/defend more people. I still dont get as many attacks as most users seem to but it still makes my day and is always appreciated. Especially because my illness makes it really difficult for me to socialise with other artists (or people in general lol) so it's a real bonus for me.
I also have always chosen to attack any artist of any level and don't understand why people are so greedy and selfish with what is meant to be a fun event for all artists to interact with each other. Dismissing beginners art is so entitled and rude. Hopefully this is the minority still, so far I have experienced a lot of positivity with those I've interact with.

No hate to you OP, I don't disagree with what's said in this video, just sharing my experiences after participating for 5 years now.
I've seen a lot of videos like this this year, but in my experience these are issues that have always existed and aren't necessarily more prevalent compared to other years?
I do think some of them are somewhat rooted in a valid concern, like how some people make rushed mass attacks as a way of farming points/revenges (but the amount of people who actually do that is so low it's negligable). But then those valid arguments get adopted by entitled people who are just out to get free HQ art to justify their shitty opinions/behaviour.
I also haven't actually seen any of these issues occur, I've only seen videos saying that they're occurring. The only thing I've noticed this year is that there seems to be a slight increase in people basically ignoring attacks. Of course, you're not obliged to revenge at all, but I feel like you should at least comment to thank whoever attacked you for putting in the time and effort to draw you something. That's just basic respect. The only time I've ignored an attack was one that got colours entirely wrong and missed like half the markings, clearly not paying attention to the design.
All that being said, that's just my experience. The increase in people ignoring attacks may just be pure coincidence on my end. Over all I still think that while there are minor issues/annoyances, it's not enough to ruin the event. Happy Art Fight y'all!

I'll prob never join artfight because I do art for a living and am way too busy. But I get fan art time to time and I can't imagine being picky with it-- I'm happy to receive art of my character no matter who drew it. It's such a flattering honor knowing someone likes your character or art enough to take time out of their day to make you something, even if they're not as good as they could be yet.

To me personally it is fine if people join artfight to receive art, it is a normal thing to want but in that case you should still manage your expectations and remember that no one owes you free art, or art that meets your standards, if you have those either commission someone or do art trades with people who have the art style you want, it's honestly sad to see some artists themselves act entitled on art as the same "can you draw me" people we usually make fun of

I’ve been doing artfight for 5 years now. I initially joined because my partner thought it would be a fun thing for me to do because I liked drawing. Ofc when I started I was really new to art and I had an amazing really high quality artist attack me and words cannot describe how happy I was, I was over the moon and I attacked them back, obviously not as good because I was just starting and they seemed really happy about it aswell and it made me feel so welcomed.
Of course I do artfight for the drawing but it’s also just nice to see people take an interest in your ocs and I feel like this year due to the extensive media coverage, it just doesn’t feel the same. Artfight used to feel like this cute tight community where we could exchange drawings of ocs and have a fun time. Now it just feels too big and toxic and people exclusively attacking bigger artists like I think I only got 2 attacks that weren’t my irl friends. Usual is like 5-6 and I’m not a big artist.
It just doesn’t feel the same.

This year I was attacked by a beginner, and their drawing was absolutely amazing, and it was so creative, They made my character wear a suit, and they were holding a little bouquet of flowers, and my character had the cutest little smile, I loved it! And the person who made me the drawing was so sweet too! People who hate on beginner artists are real poopy heads.

So to hear that people are being hostile and nasty to young artists just because they don't like there art is devastating because those young artists will most likely not want to come back to art fight next year and may give up on art all together.

I’ve been participating in ArtFight for three years now, and something I’ve always noticed is that a lot of people attack popular artists from social media in hopes of their favorite artists revenging them back. The thing is that some of the artists get over 100 attacks every year! It’s fine if you want to give your favorite social media artists a drawing as a gift, (it’s something I’ve done a few times,) but their most likely not going to revenge you if their getting a ton of other attacks. I just feel like there’s so many amazing artists on ArtFight that don’t have many attacks and are very underrated. It’s why I mostly attack people who are new to the game or don’t have any defenses. Not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I thought I’d put it out there. Hope everyone has a great rest of ArtFight!

Traditional artists are 100% allowed on Artfight. While digital art is more common, there are a TON of traditional artists on artfight! I myself have done traditional art attacks, water color, scratchart, pen art, and pencil sketches. There is even an option for 'crafting' where people make sculptures, plushies, crochet and even food art. If you still want to join, it goes till the end of July and you can totally still participate. Even if its just to enjoy viewing others art, or making just 1 attack.

This year was my first year here, and I didn't even know anything was going on drama wise until more than half way through the event. I'm glad I didn't stumble on any rude people, and I genuinely enjoyed Artfight so much. It was super fun, and I'm hoping I'll be able to do it next year too. I only got one attack against me (not being a revenge), but I'm fine with that. The only complication I had (which wasn't even that bad), was that I had accidentally made a character with a more chubby body type according to the owner of the OC too buff looking, and I got that sorted out immediately. The owner of the OC just asked me to take the attack down, and that it made them a bit uncomfortable. I pm'd them after removing the attack, just saying how I'm sorry that I made them uncomfortable, and that it wasn't my intent at all, to which they were very understanding and polite; not only to the reply to my pm, but throughout the entire situation.

Im a beginner-ish artist. (Ive been drawing since i was 9 years old, but havent improved a big bunch, im not masterful what so ever) Ive always preferred my art to be a hobby not a job, but i also enjoy drawing other peoples characters moreso then my own, which makes artfight perfect for me! This year i went all out and tried new things entirely, i tried being different with my coloring, shading, and lining, i even made a piece i was super proud of which hasnt happened for me in a long time! That same piece was just snubbed, no comment or replies, straight up ignored! I didnt care if they revenged or not, but it would be nice if you could atleast be like "yo thanks" or something yknow? I look at there profile as well bc i was curious, there was 130+ "defenses" and like 20 attacks on there page. It was so bizarre to me, i have never seen anything like it bro.

It's my third year doing Artfight and yeah, you shouldn't join with the expectation of getting tons of attacks or even revenges on every attack you send.
I personally like to attack people I've commissioned or who have sent me gifts throughout the year, as thanks.
I also really like attacking beginner artists, and love receiving art from them. I think a lot of the time beginners art has a lot of soul and is very expressive. In the technical sense, I'm medium skilled, but my drawings lack emotion, since when learning I prioritised having clean drawings over interesting ones. My art doesn't have as much personality as I wish it did, which I'm working on now. But beginner artists know they don't have mad technical skills, so they put their all in other aspects, like doing creative designs, working on the composition or the facial expressions.
I also see that in the animation community, beginners tend to be more ambitious than people with medium technical skill, because they know it can only further their skill and they'll be proud of it, rather than focusing on if it will fit with the rest of their art. And it usually really pays off. I see people doing awesome animations on flipaclip drawing with their finger, that I wouldn't attempt with my drawing tablet because I'm a coward.
TL:DR : There's no sense in wanting to kick out beginner artists, not only everyone starts somewhere but also their art is usually really cool in its own right

I think this also brings the discussion: what is an ""experienced"" or ""beginner"" artstyle anyway? If it's based on rendering, the cartoony styles never evolve? We evolve different parts of our art at different times, i feel like i'm way better at poses and character design now but i still need to improve my shading and background, i haven't done a full piece in a long long time. I can't say i participated in any artfight, but thinking about any artist, no matter what skill, drawing one of my characters they don't know shit about, for free? That's awesome!! Like, your OC, out of all the others ones there, just got fanart, be grateful! Someone thought their design, or backstory or just their concept was cool enough to draw.
Just seems like people are a bit ungrateful about the art they're receiving. Someone put their time to draw your little guy. No matter what "level" of skill they have, they did their best and did it as a gift. Sorry for the rant, i just feel like this kind of stuff pushes people away from participating, like i wanted to participate but didn't bc i was kinda scared of what people would think of my art and stuff, and now this... Hope next year is better though!

I've been participating in Artfight since 2018. I love artfight, especially as a very introverted person who has a hard time making friends. There is a certain joy in drawing other people's characters that I adore, but I am often far too shy to ask if random people feel comfortable with fanart.
However, Artfight became a great excuse. I did not need to talk to people, I could just draw their characters! And I knew they would appreciate. I started with about seven attacks every season or so, yet last Artfight I did 36, and this Artfight I am trying to make even more. Is it out of competition? No, I just like drawing, and I enjoy seeing the people get all giddy and excited because they got art. (I have to admit, though, most of these are revenges - people are very active this year!!!)
I like targeting beginner artists especially. I am by no means a pro, but I remember my times when I was a beginner at art, and I got a piece from someone with much better grasp on art concepts than me. I was thrilled, so now I usually try to draw beginner artists' ocs as best as I can, to bring them the same joy that I was brought before (and I love seeing them revenge my drawings!).
I think I have only had one small problem during artfight because someone drew my fursona wrong twice (made them slim, gave them breasts and didn't include their fur markings for some reason?). However, I decided not to be rude - I just thanked them for their drawings, and then added to my permissions to not draw them with breasts/slimmed down, that's all!
I have not seen people being rude - probably because I do not check the social media hashtags, or discord, or just because I have been lucky - but I have seen the trend of making mass attacks, and I have to say, that is incredible!! My characters have been featured in several this year, and I find them astonishing (because I am not good at composition). I really like seeing people's creativity with such big drawings.
I hope artfight brings joy to the people that participate, and does not become a serious competition that just becomes stressful in the end. Beginners or not, everyone deserves to have a good time, experiment with their style, and enjoy drawing and getting art from different people :>

My favorite thing about art fight is I can experiment and it encourages me to draw, it's super duper fun.

I think it's a good point. I made sure to have a single OC when I worked up the nerve to join Art Fight for the first time, but because of an "It would be nice to get something back" mindset. The main goal is at least 3 attacks to get past my long-term artblock (going on 20 years now) and actually finish what I start. I'm at one-and-a-half so far. But knowing myself, if I hadn't gotten a single thing, I would have been discouraged from trying again next year.
Luckily, a friend I attacked revenged me and then mass attacked, while also giving me permission to use the clothes she drew me as a form of encouragement. But it took days to find someone else that had an OC that just clicked, because I was afraid of disappointing. I won't quit until I hit number three though.

I agree, I may not entirely like someone's art style, but I try my best to give them back art when I can. Because I know how it can hurt to feel left out of something when you put your heart into it.

I got my friend to join artfight and shes only gotten 2 attacks, even though her art is so much better than mine.
    Sad.

Although I guess I get more attacks just because I do more attacks

My first year of art fight was last year and it blows my mind how people can get mad at this- it just doesn't make sense to me to abuse a system at all. It's made for FUN not for profit of any sort

This is my first ever art fight and when I first joined the sight I thought the whole thing of art fight was teams vs each other competitively. I play splatoon, so I think it was cause I have that splatoon splatfest mindset.
I also felt really disappointed when I didn’t get attacked in the first week
But watching these videos, making art attacks and also recently getting some attacks made my perspective of this event change. It’s fun to draw people’s characters and the happiness I feel when I see my characters being drawn is outstanding.
I just wish people would be more kinder to others, whether it’s about art attacks or just joining and having that expectation.
Sorry for my long rant ^^’ Great video!

I remember joining art fight last year and this person kind of annoyed me for asking me to fix one little outline piece, that it turned out they wanted everything adjusted where the point I should have just block them instead of doing it, like I dont mind small or big mistakes on my oc as it's free art, they took time on it, and it's a one of a kind art piece as well

I've been on Art Fight for 7 years now, and I can say that there has always been "pixelated" Mass attacks, it's just a part of Art Fight and just like you said, it's always possible to just let people know that you don't want your characters included in those kind of attacks!
From my view, the drama only really exists if you interact with it, the only time someone disregarded my permissions and drew something really tasteless of my character, I just notified an admin and the attack was gone within a day (that was in 2018).
However the hostility towards beginner artists is just??? so stupid? I personally cherish every attack I get, revenge them and make sure to leave nice comments, no matter the skill level, I really hope that someday those people will realize their mistakes and start being gentler

Majority of the people I fought against didn’t fight anybody back, it was really upsetting bcs I was hoping I’d be able to do a lot of art for people and receive art as well

The point of artfight is to go outside of your comfort zone and hone your own skills. Also to give without expecting things in return. That being said, I'm sure that feeling of rejection is rough. Just remember, it's nothing personal against you! :) there are so many reasons why someone might not attack back. Even if it's because they don't find your character appealing to draw (imho the worst case scenario reason), then, that's okay too. And it's nothing against you. Everyone has things they like to draw more than others. And everyone in artfight has their reasons for being there. (Tho if they're in it purely to get free art of their OCs, they're probably in it for the wrong reasons lol)

This stuff has always existed on art fight. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people are looking back on art fight with rose tinted glasses, when really it's not "way more prevalent" or anything.

I feel this as well as someone who's been doing artfight since 2017, and absolutely no shade to OP but them saying they've only been doing artfight for two years sort of makes me feel that they have simply /heard/ that artfight is going downhill as opposed to having actually witnessed such a thing happen. By their own metric they were not around during it's glory days. EDIT: ok they said three years mb

I've been on Artfight since the Furrypaws days
People were complaining when the game left Furrypaws because the deviantartists would drag the art strandards down.
Its been going on since the literal beginning of art fight

Was my first year this time around, as I had never heard of Artfight before. But, as a hobbyist artist whose done digital for over a decade now, and have felt the grind of social media...I'm really in the era of, "All art made by actual folks, no matter how experienced or no, is good art." I'm not the most technically skilled, but I made it a goal to hit a number of different art styles and skill levels (although many oc's ended up starting with the letter V, weirdly.) Because I would rather spread a bit of serotonin than add another match to the burning cesspit that is the internet and life in general.
