"Lack of funding" that sentence angers me especially when it's attached to important reserches.
@@kasnitch who doesn't
And put all those feel good medicine companies out of business?! Pharmaceutical companies can't have that happening.
chinito77 Exactly their fuckin beasts the lot of em
Seriously I wish they'd say screw government funding and open a go fund me or something. I can't imagine they wouldn't raise enough with the goal of irradicating most viruses
Then why don’t you fund it. I’ll drop you a check of a few billion of you put the best in
Having a really bad cold is torture when you have to go to work/school.
I know right
Especially at night ugh
Matt TheChosen common cold is contagious? I thought flu was the only one
You fidnt know that the common cold is contagious? Man you have a lot to learn
I am so lucky that I'm not in college for another whole week and can get better at home. This cold sucks 😭
Death is the ultimate cure for everything, excluding death.
Will it cure my fear of death?
@@dismissing yes cause you'll stop feeling anything when you're dead
Hi Dere OWO makes sense
It won't fix a broken arm. Your arm will still be broken when you're dead, you'll just have a dead broken arm instead of an alive broken arm.
And once you get death, you're immune. Unless you're a Buddhist (other belief systems promising reincarnation are available).
It’s _commonly_ accepted that there isn’t a cure except chicken noodle soup
Did you try Paracetamol first? said the concerned chicken...
@@ShobhitVashistha antibiotics and probably other junk like some kind of pain killer is already in the chicken, thanks to massive meat farms... So it's a win-win!
Chicken soup loaded with veg from the allium family, garlic, onion, and leek. Maybe some ginger, finely grated. Ginger in combination with garlic is known to be antiviral. The common cold is an attack of rhino viruses. Yes, add some noodles and whatever else you like for comfort.
@@ShobhitVashistha Isn't Paracetamol already in chickens? Wouldn't the chicken just increas its own value for sick persons if it asks that :)
Chicken Soup For The Nose.
I would give 5% to 10% of my income never to have a cold again. With a deviated septum a cold is worse than a flu for me.
I know this comment is old, but yes, I would do the same. Include all viral respiratory infections (flu, COVID, all colds) and that's a deal!
@@PurplePinkRed the flu.. is part of the common cold. And coronaviruses account for 1/3 of the common cold. So finding the cure for coronaviruses. Would cure 1/3 of the cases. So it's no wonder 1 year later there is a new variant. There will probably be a new mutation by next year.
Urghh
In 1986 we were the first to sequence a Human rhinovirus and to determine the gene boundaries (Picornaviridae have a very peculiar system there) via protein sequencing (none of this was trivial back then). This was 32 years ago. Some of my then colleagues already retired, having spent their scientific lives without ever getting really close to the goal we had in mind back then.

The comments on this channel are out of control.
That would be one of the greatest miracles.
Do you remember the episode of Futurama when they talk about this

@@valken666 Do you have any idea of how damaging can the common cold be? Millions of people get it every year, and millions of dollars are spend or lost due to medical spending, lost work days, less productivity, etc.
Glad y'all uploaded this I've had a cold since Friday 😷😩
I've been very fortunate, in that I haven't had a cold or flu, or any other kind of virus, for at least the last 15 years now, but I would still like to see a universal cure. I could happily live the rest of my life without ever having to deal with another virus again.
This will save countless lives. Great report.
If there's a common cold, is there also an uncommon one?
If there is North America, is there also a South one? No

You guys should.do an episode on different forms of birth control and the hormonal and non hormonal forms as well as their side effects. Considering there are a long list of side effects, it would be really cool to see what there is in development that could provide better options.
Could you do a video on bacteriophages, specifically us using them to attack antibiotic resistant bacteria? I saw a video about it a while ago and would love to see another one from this science channel
This is number three in a row I feel like I'm watching scishow pharmacy edition
I like seeing all this latest research going into treating the common cold and I wonder when more research will explore the "Treatise on Cold Disease" written by Zhang Zhong Jing 《傷寒論 》.

Biophages are going to be a major breakthrough in many treatments once Doctors actually utilize them properly. They're so spectacular!
This episode comes out as soon as i get sick😂😭
For the idea of inhibiting the proteins that aid viruses, could a similar concept be used to inhibit cell growth in cancers?
I love you hanks
I didn't expect the common cold to be this complex
I had a cold a little over a week ago I had a sore throat first and then I started sneezing and had a stuffed up nose it was a head cold the worst of it lasted 4 days and didn’t totally go away till a little over a week about 10 days all together.
1:13 and you once did a video on copper and copper alloys helping to kill bacteria
This makes me think of the Futurama episode when Fry gets the cold
Hope so. Been suffering with it for about a week

Can't even imagine how much productivity has been lost in the world due to cold and flu. Even in my own case. Thankfully your body will clear it, but what a process to get to that finish line.
This reminds me of the story from "I Am Legend".
That false "private video" glitch on early notifications scares me every time!
How can they develop anti-virals that don't attack bacteriophages? We might want to avoid that.
I love when they say MIT, my school
There is an antiViral called (picovir) also called Pleconaril. Why was it stopped?
Scientists: "We're so close to beating the common cold."
Coronavirus: "Allow us to introduce ourselves."
FYI one type of common cold is caused by a coronavirus.
Coronavirus itself is a term for a _class_ of respiratory viruses with a common shape.
It's only been currently applied separately recently for the SARS 2.0 virus that causes COVID-19
Yha
*Back in my day, we folks would often have to face the bubonic plague.*
I hope so! It is the only thing I ever get, I haven't had any other illness other than the common cold for a good 5 years.
Oh, you've created a protein that specifically targets double stranded RNA did ya? I burned my toast 4 times today...

I can't wait until we get that cure! #CommonColdStinks But no pressure.
A cure for the common cold would be sweet, but I would rather they focus on cancer, no one will die from the sniffles.
I was expecting more lama references tbh. That study came out like... last week? I think.

Today I brought my mom home from the hospital for severe cold side effects: low grade fever, coughing, bronchitis and laryngitis.
Luckily she's had both pneumonia vaccines. They've really protected her. 💉
I wish there will be a cure. So whenever I do have it I won't have to think about memories of having no stuffy nose...
Will we need to worry about overuse of antivirals like we do with antibiotics?
i had common cold for 4 months straight and i still have it the moment im sending this comment. i need serious help
I can help you if you don’t mind i was once a patient of cancer after my encounter with dr ocheja he gave me some herb that really help me now am free I can also give you his contact if you don’t mind maybe he also have herbs for common cold
I know a doctor that can also help you get rid of it permanently he also save my life...Kindly send me your WhatsApp number or email address so I can forward it to the doctor
Has anyone consider replace the parts that can get infect as a catch all solution. Eg if a virus work in the kidney replace it with a synthetic one that can't get infections.
I caught a cold right after a surgery inside my nose to breathe better. I feel like HELL......
I’m on my 8th day of congestion and cough 😷 horrible
A drug like this may be prohibitively expensive, though. Looking at antivirals currently on the market, like valganciclovir, it's usually in the upper price tiers of insurance formularies, if it's in there at all. The same is true for HIV antivirals. Plus, doctors are very strict about giving out prescriptions for these drugs, saving them only for the very sick and vulnerable population. This is interesting science, but I don't think it would be something available to the general population.
does titanium-tungsten-lead alloy exist?
Its “magic bullet”. We’re not fighting ware wolfs here.
Come to italy, we have measles!
Can i send all the anti Vaxers there?
antivax is already the 1st party in the government
@@matteofabbris7877 I'm sorry, that sucks. We need to work to provide science and refute meaningless sophisms in debate.
I always saw it as a evolutionary arms race. Think red queen hypothesis. Wouldn't broad spectrum antiviral just increase their evolutionary adaptation to our weapons?
Sure, and antibiotics have resulted in antibiotic resistance. That doesn't mean though that antibiotics haven't still saved a huge number of lives and that we can't, with improved technology, develop a new solution to keep up the fight.
@@RebeccaS1231 Of Course. It's just something to pay attention to. Life cycles of rhinoviruses are way shorter than most bacterial strains.
We could well be about 75 years away from saying, "Will there ever be cure for a common bacterial infection?"
I got the first moderna shot two weeks ago and this week I got the chills twice from cold weather. Thinking I was going to symptoms the next day as usual, i didn’t feel anything. This happened twice since I’ve gotten the vaccine. I’m curious if anyone else who is susceptible to colds and has gotten the vaccine has found this out as well.
Why won’t you try soul society herbal remedies
@@lotusuniversum1473 stop trying to sell your quackery medicine to people who made comments in a science video months ago. I see you saying the same thing in every comment. So sad.
@@xenos_n. I m not selling anything just spreading information
I don’t have any revenue from that
Good timing for the video. My nose has just turned into a fountain. Would have been better timing if the cure was invented now also...
Wouldn't that open us up to another bunch of super bugs this time in viral form? Also I'm sure it's been thought about but why aren't they trying to make an antigen "bomb" of sorts. Something that would present a plethora of antigen to our immune system that are common among many of the viral strands
They always say a cold is "minor" but I have been in bed all weekend with a cold. Going to take off work tomorrow. Yes, my body will get rid of it, but it's still a few days of misery.
Boost the Immune System and keep it that way
Hey SciShow: Why don't we sneeze in our sleep?

@steve gale how is @euphytose being childish? They actually backed up their comment with a scientifically legitimate article.
You're a SciShow fan, I'm assuming, so you'd think you'd be be able to keep an open mind, especially when confronted with evidence, even if it's to the contrary of your belief.
In any debate, you lose credibility and respect when you bring the insults. Nobody wants to listen to someone who talks down to them, regardless of whether they're right or wrong.
We'd be living in exciting times if the cure had actually been released and was being used, as it is, it's just endless stories of 'possible breakthrough maybe coming at some point in the future, if all goes impossibly well'.

Have they considered (or actually tried) studying people who don't get sick? Surely I can't be the only one although when I was in grade school it sure felt like it. Every year half the class would be out sick and then they would come back. However the other half would then be out sick and I... well I was there the whole time. I even asked sick friends to cough on me but never would get sick. I had to fake it just to feel normal. I am in my 40's now and still the same. I never have had a flu vaccine and never had the flu either. I am abnormal but I guess I kind of like it. :P - Heidi
A cold is the worst when you have to go school with it :/
Imagine going to work...
Hurting for funding? Seriously? Come on, this stuff needs funding!
I have a cold and it's annoying.
However I do like the option of taking a sick day.... Maybe that's why there's lack of funding....ppl need their sick days!
If only rhinovirus was as endangered as white rhinos
Boy, this would be nice, but any solution would probably cost $500 a pill and have a list of horrific side effects.
WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS??
"When _I_ was your age, I got... a _cold._ Gosh. You know, I really thought there would be _more_ to this story. Never mind."
Am I the only one who noticed Hanks hair?
